वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
धृतराष्ट्रवचः श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ समर्थ्य तौ। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥५-१२४-१॥
dhr̥tarāṣṭravacaḥ śrutvā bhīṣmadrōṇau samarthya tau। duryōdhanamidaṁ vākyamūcatuḥ śāsanātigam ॥5-124-1॥
[धृतराष्ट्रवचः (dhr̥tarāṣṭravacaḥ) - the words of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣmadrōṇau) - Bhīṣma and Droṇa; समर्थ्य (samarthya) - having supported; तौ (tau) - those two; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - to Duryodhana; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - spoke; शासन-अतिगम् (śāsana-atigam) - transgressing command;]
Having heard Dhṛtarāṣṭra's words and supporting them, Bhīṣma and Droṇa then said these words to Duryodhana, words that went against his command: (5-124-1)
यावत्कृष्णावसंनद्धौ यावत्तिष्ठति गाण्डिवम्। यावद्धौम्यो न सेनाग्नौ जुहोतीह द्विषद्बलम् ॥५-१२४-२॥
yāvatkr̥ṣṇāvasaṁnaddhau yāvattiṣṭhati gāṇḍivam। yāvaddhaumyō na sēnāgnau juhōtīha dviṣadbalam ॥5-124-2॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; कृष्णौ (kr̥ṣṇau) - the two Krishnas; असंनद्धौ (asaṁnaddhau) - are not armored; यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; गाण्डिवम् (gāṇḍivam) - the Gandiva (bow); यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; न (na) - does not; सेनाग्नौ (sēnāgnau) - in the battle fire (sacrificial fire for the army); जुहोति (juhōti) - offer; इह (iha) - here; द्विषत् (dviṣat) - the enemy's; बलम् (balam) - forces;]
So long as the two Krishnas are not armored, so long as the Gandiva remains (unstrung), and so long as Dhaumya has not here offered the enemy's forces into the battle fire... (5-124-2)
यावन्न प्रेक्षते क्रुद्धः सेनां तव युधिष्ठिरः। ह्रीनिषेधो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-३॥
yāvanna prēkṣatē kruddhaḥ sēnāṁ tava yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। hrīniṣēdhō mahēṣvāsastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-3॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; न (na) - not; प्रेक्षते (prēkṣatē) - looks at; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; सेनाम् (sēnām) - the army; तव (tava) - your; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; ह्री-निषेधः (hrī-niṣēdhaḥ) - whose restraint is modesty; महेष्वासः (mahēṣvāsaḥ) - great archer; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; शाम्यतु (śāmyatu) - let it cease; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - violence;]
So long as your angry Yudhishthira, the great archer whose restraint is modesty, does not look upon the army, let the violence cease. (5-124-3)
यावन्न दृष्यते पार्थः स्वेष्वनीकेष्ववस्थितः। भीमसेनो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-४॥
yāvanna dr̥ṣyatē pārthaḥ svēṣvanīkēṣvavasthitaḥ। bhīmasēnō mahēṣvāsastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-4॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; न (na) - not; दृष्यते (dr̥ṣyatē) - is seen; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; स्वेषु (svēṣu) - among his own; अनीकेषु (anīkēṣu) - in the ranks; अवस्थितः (avasthitaḥ) - standing; भीमसेनः (bhīmasēnaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महेष्वासः (mahēṣvāsaḥ) - the great archer; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; छाम्यतु (chāmyatu) - may it cease; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - slaughter;]
So long as Pārtha is not seen standing among his own ranks, so long as Bhīmasena, the great archer, is there—may the slaughter cease. (5-124-4)
यावन्न चरते मार्गान्पृतनामभिहर्षयन्। यावन्न शातयत्याजौ शिरांसि गजयोधिनाम् ॥५-१२४-५॥
yāvanna caratē mārgānpr̥tanāmabhiharṣayan। yāvanna śātayatyājau śirāṁsi gajayōdhinām ॥5-124-5॥
[यावन् (yāvan) - as long as; न (na) - not; चरते (caratē) - goes; मार्गान् (mārgān) - among the paths; पृतनाम् (pr̥tanām) - of the armies; अभिहर्षयन् (abhiharṣayan) - exulting; यावन् (yāvan) - as long as; न (na) - not; शातयति (śātayati) - cuts down; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; शिरांसि (śirāṁsi) - heads; गजयोधिनाम् (gajayōdhinām) - of the elephant-warriors;]
As long as he does not move among the ranks of the armies, exulting; as long as he does not hew down the heads of the elephant-warriors in battle... (5-124-5)
गदया वीरघातिन्या फलानीव वनस्पतेः। कालेन परिपक्वानि तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-६॥
gadayā vīraghātinyā phalānīva vanaspatēḥ। kālēna paripakvāni tāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-6॥
[गदया (gadayā) - with his mace; वीरघातिन्या (vīraghātinyā) - slaying heroes; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; इव (iva) - like; वनस्पतेः (vanaspatēḥ) - from a tree; कालेन (kālēna) - in due time; परिपक्वानि (paripakvāni) - ripened; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; शाम्यतु (śāmyatu) - let the slaughter cease; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - butchery;]
As long as he smites warriors with his hero-slaying mace, like fruits ripening in due time on a tree, so long let the butchery continue. (5-124-6)
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। विराटश्च शिखण्डी च शैशुपालिश्च दंशिताः ॥५-१२४-७॥
nakulaḥ sahadēvaśca dhr̥ṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ। virāṭaśca śikhaṇḍī ca śaiśupāliśca daṁśitāḥ ॥5-124-7॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakul; सहदेवश्च (sahadēvaśca) - and Sahadev; धृष्टद्युम्नश्च (dhr̥ṣṭadyumnaśca) - and Dhrishtadyumna; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - the son of Prishata; विराटश्च (virāṭaśca) - and Virata; शिखण्डी च (śikhaṇḍī ca) - and Shikhandi; शैशुपालिश्च (śaiśupāliśca) - and the son of Shishupala; दंशिताः (daṁśitāḥ) - are wounded;]
Nakul, Sahadev, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, Virata, Shikhandi, and the son of Shishupala are wounded. (5-124-7)
यावन्न प्रविशन्त्येते नक्रा इव महार्णवम्। कृतास्त्राः क्षिप्रमस्यन्तस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-८॥
yāvanna praviśantyētē nakrā iva mahārṇavam। kr̥tāstrāḥ kṣipramasyantastāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-8॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - until; न (na) - not; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - they enter; एते (ētē) - these; नक्राः (nakrāḥ) - crocodiles; इव (iva) - like; महार्णवम् (mahārṇavam) - the great ocean; कृतास्त्राः (kr̥tāstrāḥ) - trained in weapons; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अस्यन्तः (asyantaḥ) - advancing; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; शाम्यतु (śāmyatu) - let there be cessation of; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - slaughter;]
Until these warriors who are trained in weapons, like crocodiles swiftly entering the great ocean, have advanced, let the slaughter cease. (5-124-8)
यावन्न सुकुमारेषु शरीरेषु महीक्षिताम्। गार्ध्रपत्राः पतन्त्युग्रास्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-९॥
yāvanna sukumārēṣu śarīrēṣu mahīkṣitām। gārdhrapatrāḥ patantyugrāstāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-9॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; न (na) - not; सुकुमारेषु (sukumārēṣu) - on the delicate; शरीरेषु (śarīrēṣu) - bodies; महीक्षिताम् (mahīkṣitām) - of kings; गार्ध्रपत्राः (gārdhrapatrāḥ) - vulture feathers; पतन्ति (patanti) - fall; उग्राः (ugrāḥ) - fierce; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; शाम्यतु (śāmyatu) - let it cease; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - the carnage;]
So long as the fierce vulture-feathered arrows do not fall upon the delicate bodies of the kings, let the carnage cease. (5-124-9)
चन्दनागरुदिग्धेषु हारनिष्कधरेषु च। नोरःसु यावद्योधानां महेष्वासैर्महेषवः ॥५-१२४-१०॥
candanāgarudigdhēṣu hāraniṣkadharēṣu ca। nōraḥsu yāvadyōdhānāṁ mahēṣvāsairmahēṣavaḥ ॥5-124-10॥
[चन्दनागरुदिग्धेषु (candanāgarudigdhēṣu) - anointed with sandalwood and aloe; हारनिष्कधरेषु (hāraniṣkadharēṣu) - adorned with necklaces and gold coins; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; उरःसु (uraḥsu) - on the chests; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; योधानाम् (yōdhānām) - of the warriors; महेष्वासैः (mahēṣvāsaiḥ) - by the mighty bowmen; महेषवः (mahēṣavaḥ) - great arrows;]
As long as great arrows from the mighty bowmen have not struck the chests of warriors who are anointed with sandalwood and aloe and adorned with necklaces and gold coins… (5-124-10)
कृतास्त्रैः क्षिप्रमस्यद्भिर्दूरपातिभिरायसाः। अभिलक्ष्यैर्निपात्यन्ते तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-११॥
kr̥tāstraiḥ kṣipramasyadbhirdūrapātibhirāyasāḥ। abhilakṣyairnipātyantē tāvacchāmyatu vaiśasam ॥5-124-11॥
[कृतास्त्रैः (kr̥tāstraiḥ) - by those skilled in weapons; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - swiftly; अस्यद्भिः (asyadbhiḥ) - by those who shoot; दूरपातिभिः (dūrapātibhiḥ) - capable of being shot far; आयसाः (āyasāḥ) - iron (arrows); अभिलक्ष्यैः (abhilakṣyaiḥ) - accurately aim; निपात्यन्ते (nipātyantē) - are brought down; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; शाम्यतु (śāmyatu) - let it cease; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - the calamity;]
So long as the iron arrows, shot swiftly and from afar by skilled archers, strike their marks accurately and bring warriors down, let this carnage cease. (5-124-11)
अभिवादयमानं त्वां शिरसा राजकुञ्जरः। पाणिभ्यां प्रतिगृह्णातु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१२४-१२॥
abhivādayamānaṁ tvāṁ śirasā rājakuñjaraḥ। pāṇibhyāṁ pratigr̥hṇātu dharmarājō yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-124-12॥
[अभिवादयमानं (abhivādayamānaṁ) - bowing in greeting; त्वां (tvāṁ) - to you; शिरसा (śirasā) - with his head; राजकुञ्जरः (rājakuñjaraḥ) - the royal elephant; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyāṁ) - with his hands; प्रतिगृह्णातु (pratigr̥hṇātu) - should receive; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the King of Dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
As the royal elephant bows in greeting to you with his head, let King Yudhishthira, the King of Dharma, accept him with his hands. (5-124-12)
ध्वजाङ्कुशपताकाङ्कं दक्षिणं ते सुदक्षिणः। स्कन्धे निक्षिपतां बाहुं शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२४-१३॥
dhvajāṅkuśapatākāṅkaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ tē sudakṣiṇaḥ। skandhē nikṣipatāṁ bāhuṁ śāntayē bharatarṣabha ॥5-124-13॥
[ध्वजाङ्कुशपताकाङ्कं (dhvajāṅkuśapatākāṅkaṁ) - bearing the mark of a banner, goad, and flag; दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇaṁ) - right; ते (tē) - your; सुदक्षिणः (sudakṣiṇaḥ) - Sudakṣina; स्कन्धे (skandhē) - on the shoulder; निक्षिपतां (nikṣipatāṁ) - let him place; बाहुं (bāhuṁ) - his arm; शान्तये (śāntayē) - for your comfort; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
Let Sudakṣina, bearing your right mark of banner, goad, and flag, place his arm on your shoulder for your comfort, bull among the Bharatas. (5-124-13)
रत्नौषधिसमेतेन रत्नाङ्गुलितलेन च। उपविष्टस्य पृष्ठं ते पाणिना परिमार्जतु ॥५-१२४-१४॥
ratnauṣadhisamētēna ratnāṅgulitalēna ca। upaviṣṭasya pr̥ṣṭhaṁ tē pāṇinā parimārjatu ॥5-124-14॥
[रत्न औषधि समेतेन (ratna auṣadhi samētēna) - set with gems and medicinal herbs; रत्नाङ्गुलि तलेन च (ratnāṅguli talēna ca) - with a finger adorned with a gem; उपविष्टस्य (upaviṣṭasya) - of one seated; पृष्ठं (pr̥ṣṭhaṁ) - the back; ते (tē) - your; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with his hand; परिमार्जतु (parimārjatu) - should gently stroke;]
Let him gently stroke your back with his hand, his finger adorned with a gem and set with gems and medicinal herbs, as you are seated. (5-124-14)
शालस्कन्धो महाबाहुस्त्वां स्वजानो वृकोदरः। साम्नाभिवदतां चापि शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२४-१५॥
śālaskandhō mahābāhustvāṁ svajānō vr̥kōdaraḥ। sāmnābhivadatāṁ cāpi śāntayē bharatarṣabha ॥5-124-15॥
[शालस्कन्धः (śālaskandhaḥ) - broad-shouldered; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; स्वजनः (svajanaḥ) - his kinsman; वृकोदरः (vr̥kōdaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; साम्ना (sāmnā) - softly; अभिवदताम् (abhivadatām) - offering respects; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शान्तये (śāntayē) - for reconciliation; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
The broad-shouldered, mighty-armed Vṛkodara, your own kinsman, also offered you respectful greetings in gentle words for reconciliation, bull among the Bharatas. (5-124-15)
अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां च त्रिभिस्तैरभिवादितः। मूर्ध्नि तान्समुपाघ्राय प्रेम्णाभिवद पार्थिव ॥५-१२४-१६॥
arjunēna yamābhyāṁ ca tribhistairabhivāditaḥ। mūrdhni tānsamupāghrāya prēmṇābhivada pārthiva ॥5-124-16॥
[अर्जुनेन (arjunēna) - by Arjuna; यमाभ्यां (yamābhyāṁ) - by the twins; च (ca) - and; त्रिभिः तैः (tribhiḥ taiḥ) - by those three; अभिवादितः (abhivāditaḥ) - having been respectfully greeted; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; तान् (tān) - them; समुपाघ्राय (samupāghrāya) - having embraced / smelled (their heads) in affection; प्रेम्णा (prēmṇā) - with affection; अभिवद (abhivada) - greet; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
O king, after being respectfully greeted by Arjuna and the twins, he affectionately embraced them, smelling their heads, and greeted them in return. (5-124-16)
दृष्ट्वा त्वां पाण्डवैर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः सह सङ्गतम्। यावदानन्दजाश्रूणि प्रमुञ्चन्तु नराधिपाः ॥५-१२४-१७॥
dr̥ṣṭvā tvāṁ pāṇḍavairvīrairbhrātr̥bhiḥ saha saṅgatam। yāvadānandajāśrūṇi pramuñcantu narādhipāḥ ॥5-124-17॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - the heroes; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātr̥bhiḥ) - with their brothers; सह (saha) - together; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - united; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; आनन्दज अश्रूणि (ānandaja aśrūṇi) - tears born of joy; प्रमुञ्चन्तु (pramuñcantu) - may they shed; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - the kings;]
Seeing you united with the heroic Pāṇḍavas and their brothers, may the kings shed tears of joy for as long as possible. (5-124-17)
घुष्यतां राजधानीषु सर्वसम्पन्महीक्षिताम्। पृथिवी भ्रातृभावेन भुज्यतां विज्वरो भव ॥५-१२४-१८॥
ghuṣyatāṁ rājadhānīṣu sarvasampanmahīkṣitām। pr̥thivī bhrātr̥bhāvēna bhujyatāṁ vijvarō bhava ॥5-124-18॥
[घुष्यताम् (ghuṣyatām) - let it be proclaimed; राजधानीषु (rājadhānīṣu) - in the capitals; सर्वसम्पत्-महीक्षिताम् (sarvasampat-mahīkṣitām) - of all prosperous kings; पृथिवी (pr̥thivī) - the earth; भ्रातृ-भावेन (bhrātr̥-bhāvēna) - as brothers; भुज्यताम् (bhujyatām) - let it be enjoyed; विज्वरः (vijvaraḥ) - free from anxiety; भव (bhava) - be;]
Let it be proclaimed in the capitals of all prosperous kings: let the earth be enjoyed in a spirit of brotherhood—be free from anxiety. (5-124-18)
