05.124

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:

धृतराष्ट्रवचः श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ समर्थ्य तौ। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥५-१२४-१॥

Having heard Dhṛtarāṣṭra's words and supporting them, Bhīṣma and Droṇa then said these words to Duryodhana, words that went against his command: (5-124-1)

यावत्कृष्णावसंनद्धौ यावत्तिष्ठति गाण्डिवम्। यावद्धौम्यो न सेनाग्नौ जुहोतीह द्विषद्बलम् ॥५-१२४-२॥

So long as the two Krishnas are not armored, so long as the Gandiva remains (unstrung), and so long as Dhaumya has not here offered the enemy's forces into the battle fire... (5-124-2)

यावन्न प्रेक्षते क्रुद्धः सेनां तव युधिष्ठिरः। ह्रीनिषेधो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-३॥

So long as your angry Yudhishthira, the great archer whose restraint is modesty, does not look upon the army, let the violence cease. (5-124-3)

यावन्न दृष्यते पार्थः स्वेष्वनीकेष्ववस्थितः। भीमसेनो महेष्वासस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-४॥

So long as Pārtha is not seen standing among his own ranks, so long as Bhīmasena, the great archer, is there—may the slaughter cease. (5-124-4)

यावन्न चरते मार्गान्पृतनामभिहर्षयन्। यावन्न शातयत्याजौ शिरांसि गजयोधिनाम् ॥५-१२४-५॥

As long as he does not move among the ranks of the armies, exulting; as long as he does not hew down the heads of the elephant-warriors in battle... (5-124-5)

गदया वीरघातिन्या फलानीव वनस्पतेः। कालेन परिपक्वानि तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-६॥

As long as he smites warriors with his hero-slaying mace, like fruits ripening in due time on a tree, so long let the butchery continue. (5-124-6)

नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। विराटश्च शिखण्डी च शैशुपालिश्च दंशिताः ॥५-१२४-७॥

Nakul, Sahadev, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, Virata, Shikhandi, and the son of Shishupala are wounded. (5-124-7)

यावन्न प्रविशन्त्येते नक्रा इव महार्णवम्। कृतास्त्राः क्षिप्रमस्यन्तस्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-८॥

Until these warriors who are trained in weapons, like crocodiles swiftly entering the great ocean, have advanced, let the slaughter cease. (5-124-8)

यावन्न सुकुमारेषु शरीरेषु महीक्षिताम्। गार्ध्रपत्राः पतन्त्युग्रास्तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-९॥

So long as the fierce vulture-feathered arrows do not fall upon the delicate bodies of the kings, let the carnage cease. (5-124-9)

चन्दनागरुदिग्धेषु हारनिष्कधरेषु च। नोरःसु यावद्योधानां महेष्वासैर्महेषवः ॥५-१२४-१०॥

As long as great arrows from the mighty bowmen have not struck the chests of warriors who are anointed with sandalwood and aloe and adorned with necklaces and gold coins… (5-124-10)

कृतास्त्रैः क्षिप्रमस्यद्भिर्दूरपातिभिरायसाः। अभिलक्ष्यैर्निपात्यन्ते तावच्छाम्यतु वैशसम् ॥५-१२४-११॥

So long as the iron arrows, shot swiftly and from afar by skilled archers, strike their marks accurately and bring warriors down, let this carnage cease. (5-124-11)

अभिवादयमानं त्वां शिरसा राजकुञ्जरः। पाणिभ्यां प्रतिगृह्णातु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१२४-१२॥

As the royal elephant bows in greeting to you with his head, let King Yudhishthira, the King of Dharma, accept him with his hands. (5-124-12)

ध्वजाङ्कुशपताकाङ्कं दक्षिणं ते सुदक्षिणः। स्कन्धे निक्षिपतां बाहुं शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२४-१३॥

Let Sudakṣina, bearing your right mark of banner, goad, and flag, place his arm on your shoulder for your comfort, bull among the Bharatas. (5-124-13)

रत्नौषधिसमेतेन रत्नाङ्गुलितलेन च। उपविष्टस्य पृष्ठं ते पाणिना परिमार्जतु ॥५-१२४-१४॥

Let him gently stroke your back with his hand, his finger adorned with a gem and set with gems and medicinal herbs, as you are seated. (5-124-14)

शालस्कन्धो महाबाहुस्त्वां स्वजानो वृकोदरः। साम्नाभिवदतां चापि शान्तये भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२४-१५॥

The broad-shouldered, mighty-armed Vṛkodara, your own kinsman, also offered you respectful greetings in gentle words for reconciliation, bull among the Bharatas. (5-124-15)

अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां च त्रिभिस्तैरभिवादितः। मूर्ध्नि तान्समुपाघ्राय प्रेम्णाभिवद पार्थिव ॥५-१२४-१६॥

O king, after being respectfully greeted by Arjuna and the twins, he affectionately embraced them, smelling their heads, and greeted them in return. (5-124-16)

दृष्ट्वा त्वां पाण्डवैर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः सह सङ्गतम्। यावदानन्दजाश्रूणि प्रमुञ्चन्तु नराधिपाः ॥५-१२४-१७॥

Seeing you united with the heroic Pāṇḍavas and their brothers, may the kings shed tears of joy for as long as possible. (5-124-17)

घुष्यतां राजधानीषु सर्वसम्पन्महीक्षिताम्। पृथिवी भ्रातृभावेन भुज्यतां विज्वरो भव ॥५-१२४-१८॥

Let it be proclaimed in the capitals of all prosperous kings: let the earth be enjoyed in a spirit of brotherhood—be free from anxiety. (5-124-18)
