Pancharatra: Duryodhana rejects Pandavas claim to the kingdom and sights the dharma of the kshatriyas to fight and give up lives in battle field.

श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनो वाक्यमप्रियं कुरुसंसदि । प्रत्युवाच महाबाहुं वासुदेवं यशस्विनम् ॥५-१२५-१॥
śrutvā duryodhano vākyamapriyaṃ kurusaṃsadi . pratyuvāca mahābāhuṃ vāsudevaṃ yaśasvinam ॥5-125-1॥

प्रसमीक्ष्य भवानेतद्वक्तुमर्हति केशव । मामेव हि विशेषेण विभाष्य परिगर्हसे ॥५-१२५-२॥

भक्तिवादेन पार्थानामकस्मान्मधुसूदन । भवान्गर्हयते नित्यं किं समीक्ष्य बलाबलम् ॥५-१२५-३॥

भवान्क्षत्ता च राजा च आचार्यो वा पितामहः । मामेव परिगर्हन्ते नान्यं कञ्चन पार्थिवम् ॥५-१२५-४॥
bhavānkṣattā ca rājā ca ācāryo vā pitāmahaḥ । māmeva parigarhante nānyaṃ kañcana pārthivam ॥5-125-4॥

न चाहं लक्षये कञ्चिद्व्यभिचारमिहात्मनः । अथ सर्वे भवन्तो मां विद्विषन्ति सराजकाः ॥५-१२५-५॥
na cāhaṃ lakṣaye kañcidvyabhicāramihātmanaḥ । atha sarve bhavanto māṃ vidviṣanti sarājakāḥ ॥5-125-5॥

(And I do not perceive any deviation here of myself. Then all of you, along with the kings, hate me.)
I do not see any fault in myself here. Yet, all of you, along with the kings, despise me.
न चाहं कञ्चिदत्यर्थमपराधमरिंदम । विचिन्तयन्प्रपश्यामि सुसूक्ष्ममपि केशव ॥५-१२५-६॥
na cāhaṃ kañcidatyarthamaparādhamariṃdama । vicintayanprapaśyāmi susūkṣmamapi keśava ॥5-125-6॥

(And I, O subduer of enemies, do not see any excessive offense, even a very subtle one, O Keśava, while thinking.)
O Keśava, I do not perceive any significant fault, not even a very subtle one, O subduer of enemies, as I contemplate.
प्रियाभ्युपगते द्यूते पाण्डवा मधुसूदन । जिताः शकुनिना राज्यं तत्र किं मम दुष्कृतम् ॥५-१२५-७॥
priyābhyupagate dyūte pāṇḍavā madhusūdana । jitāḥ śakuninā rājyaṃ tatra kiṃ mama duṣkṛtam ॥5-125-7॥

यत्पुनर्द्रविणं किञ्चित्तत्राजीयन्त पाण्डवाः । तेभ्य एवाभ्यनुज्ञातं तत्तदा मधुसूदन ॥५-१२५-८॥
yat punar draviṇaṃ kiñcit tatrājīyanta pāṇḍavāḥ । tebhya evābhyanujñātaṃ tattadā madhusūdana ॥5-125-8॥

(Which wealth, some there were conquered by the Pandavas. To them indeed was permitted that then, O Madhusudana.)

अपराधो न चास्माकं यत्ते ह्यक्षपराजिताः । अजेया जयतां श्रेष्ठ पार्थाः प्रव्राजिता वनम् ॥५-१२५-९॥
aparādho na cāsmākaṃ yatte hyakṣaparājitāḥ । ajeyā jayatāṃ śreṣṭha pārthāḥ pravrājitā vanam ॥5-125-9॥

(The offense is not ours, but yours, indeed, unconquered in dice. Invincible, the best of the victorious, the sons of Pritha, have been banished to the forest.)

केन चाप्यपवादेन विरुध्यन्तेऽरिभिः सह । अशक्ताः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण प्रहृष्टाः प्रत्यमित्रवत् ॥५-१२५-१०॥
kena cāpyapavādena virudhyante'ribhiḥ saha । aśaktāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa prahṛṣṭāḥ pratyamitravat ॥5-125-10॥

(By what and even by slander are they opposed with enemies? Powerless, the Pandavas, O Krishna, are delighted like against enemies.)
O Krishna, by what slander are the powerless Pandavas opposed by enemies, yet they seem delighted as if facing their foes?
किमस्माभिः कृतं तेषां कस्मिन्वा पुनरागसि । धार्तराष्ट्राञ्जिघांसन्ति पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥५-१२५-११॥
kim asmābhiḥ kṛtaṃ teṣāṃ kasmin vā punar āgasi । dhārtarāṣṭrāñ jighāṃsanti pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha ॥5-125-11॥

न चापि वयमुग्रेण कर्मणा वचनेन वा । वित्रस्ताः प्रणमामेह भयादपि शतक्रतोः ॥५-१२५-१२॥
na cāpi vayamugreṇa karmaṇā vacanena vā । vitrastāḥ praṇamāmeha bhayādapi śatakratoḥ ॥5-125-12॥

न च तं कृष्ण पश्यामि क्षत्रधर्ममनुष्ठितम् । उत्सहेत युधा जेतुं यो नः शत्रुनिबर्हण ॥५-१२५-१३॥
na ca taṃ kṛṣṇa paśyāmi kṣatradharmamanuṣṭhitam । utsaheta yudhā jetuṃ yo naḥ śatrunibarhaṇa ॥5-125-13॥

(And, O Kṛṣṇa, I do not see that the warrior's duty is being performed. Who would be able to conquer by fighting, O destroyer of enemies?)
O Kṛṣṇa, I do not see the warrior's duty being upheld. Who among us could conquer by fighting, O destroyer of enemies?
न हि भीष्मकृपद्रोणाः सगणा मधुसूदन । देवैरपि युधा जेतुं शक्याः किमुत पाण्डवैः ॥५-१२५-१४॥
na hi bhīṣmakṛpadroṇāḥ sagaṇā madhusūdana । devairapi yudhā jetuṃ śakyāḥ kimuta pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-125-14॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; कृप (kṛpa) - Kripa; द्रोणाः (droṇāḥ) - Drona; सगणा (sagaṇā) - with their troops; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; युधा (yudhā) - in battle; जेतुं (jetuṃ) - to conquer; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; किमुत (kimuta) - how much more; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas;]
(Not indeed Bhishma, Kripa, Drona with their troops, O Madhusudana, even by the gods in battle to conquer possible; how much more by the Pandavas.)
O Madhusudana, neither Bhishma, Kripa, nor Drona with their troops can be conquered in battle even by the gods, let alone by the Pandavas.
स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठन्तो यदि माधव संयुगे । शस्त्रेण निधनं काले प्राप्स्यामः स्वर्गमेव तत् ॥५-१२५-१५॥
svadharmam anutiṣṭhanto yadi mādhava saṃyuge । śastreṇa nidhanaṃ kāle prāpsyāmaḥ svargam eva tat ॥5-125-15॥
[स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - own duty; अनुतिष्ठन्तः (anutiṣṭhantaḥ) - performing; यदि (yadi) - if; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; निधनम् (nidhanam) - death; काले (kāle) - in time; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - we shall obtain; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Performing one's own duty, if, O Mādhava, in battle, by weapon, death, in time, we shall obtain heaven indeed that.)
O Mādhava, if we perform our own duty in battle and meet death by weapon in due time, we shall indeed obtain heaven.
मुख्यश्चैवैष नो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां जनार्दन । यच्छयीमहि सङ्ग्रामे शरतल्पगता वयम् ॥५-१२५-१६॥
mukhyaścaivaiṣa no dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ janārdana । yacchayīmahi saṅgrāme śaratalpagatā vayam ॥5-125-16॥
[मुख्यः (mukhyaḥ) - main; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kshatriyas; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; यत् (yat) - that; शयीमहि (śayīmahi) - we may lie; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; शरतल्पगताः (śaratalpagatāḥ) - on the bed of arrows; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Main and indeed this is our duty of the Kshatriyas, O Janardana, that we may lie in battle on the bed of arrows, we.)
O Janardana, it is indeed the primary duty of us Kshatriyas that we should lie on the battlefield on a bed of arrows.
ते वयं वीरशयनं प्राप्स्यामो यदि संयुगे । अप्रणम्यैव शत्रूणां न नस्तप्स्यति माधव ॥५-१२५-१७॥
te vayaṃ vīraśayanaṃ prāpsyāmo yadi saṃyuge । apraṇamyaiva śatrūṇāṃ na nastapsyati mādhava ॥5-125-17॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; वीरशयनम् (vīraśayanam) - hero's bed; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - will attain; यदि (yadi) - if; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; अप्रणम्य (apraṇamya) - without bowing; एव (eva) - indeed; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - us; तप्स्यति (tapsyati) - will torment; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava;]
(They, we will attain the hero's bed if in battle; without bowing indeed of enemies not us will torment, O Mādhava.)
O Mādhava, we will attain the hero's bed in battle without bowing to the enemies; they will not torment us.
कश्च जातु कुले जातः क्षत्रधर्मेण वर्तयन् । भयाद्वृत्तिं समीक्ष्यैवं प्रणमेदिह कस्यचित् ॥५-१२५-१८॥
kaśca jātu kule jātaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa vartayan । bhayādvṛttiṃ samīkṣyaivaṃ praṇamediha kasyacit ॥5-125-18॥
[कश्च (kaśca) - who; जातु (jātu) - ever; कुले (kule) - in family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by warrior's duty; वर्तयन् (vartayan) - living; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; वृत्तिं (vṛttiṃ) - conduct; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - considering; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रणमेत् (praṇamet) - would bow; इह (iha) - here; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - to anyone;]
(Who, ever born in a family, living by a warrior's duty, considering conduct from fear, would thus bow here to anyone.)
Whoever is born in a noble family and lives by the warrior's code, considering their conduct out of fear, would bow to anyone here.
उद्यच्छेदेव न नमेदुद्यमो ह्येव पौरुषम् । अप्यपर्वणि भज्येत न नमेदिह कस्यचित् ॥५-१२५-१९॥
udyacchedeva na namedudyamo hyeva pauruṣam । apyaparvaṇi bhajyeta na namediha kasyacit ॥5-125-19॥
[उद्यच्छेदेव (udyacchedeva) - like the rising sun; न (na) - not; नमेत् (namet) - should bow; उद्यमः (udyamaḥ) - effort; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - certainly; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness; अपि (api) - even; अपर्वणि (aparvaṇi) - in adversity; भज्येत (bhajyeta) - may break; न (na) - not; नमेत् (namet) - should bow; इह (iha) - here; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - to anyone;]
(Like the rising sun, effort should not bow; indeed, manliness certainly. Even in adversity, it may break, but should not bow here to anyone.)
Effort should be like the rising sun, never bowing down; true manliness lies in this. Even in adversity, one may break but should never bow to anyone.
इति मातङ्गवचनं परीप्सन्ति हितेप्सवः । धर्माय चैव प्रणमेद्ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च मद्विधः ॥५-१२५-२०॥
iti mātaṅgavacanaṃ parīpsanti hitepsavaḥ । dharmāya caiva praṇamedbrāhmaṇebhyaśca madvidhaḥ ॥5-125-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; मातङ्गवचनं (mātaṅgavacanaṃ) - words of Matanga; परीप्सन्ति (parīpsanti) - desire to obtain; हितेप्सवः (hitepsavaḥ) - those desiring welfare; धर्माय (dharmāya) - for dharma; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रणमेत् (praṇamet) - should bow; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brahmins; च (ca) - and; मद्विधः (madvidhaḥ) - like me;]
(Thus, those desiring welfare seek the words of Matanga. Indeed, one like me should bow to the Brahmins and for dharma.)
Thus, those who seek welfare listen to the words of Matanga. A person like me should bow to the Brahmins and uphold dharma.
अचिन्तयन्कञ्चिदन्यं यावज्जीवं तथाचरेत् । एष धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां मतमेतच्च मे सदा ॥५-१२५-२१॥
acintayankañcidanyaṃ yāvajjīvaṃ tathācaret । eṣa dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ matametacca me sadā ॥5-125-21॥
[अचिन्तयन् (acintayan) - not thinking; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; अन्यम् (anyam) - other; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; जीवम् (jīvam) - life; तथा (tathā) - thus; अचरेत् (acaret) - should act; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kshatriyas; मतम् (matam) - opinion; एतत् (etat) - this; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Not thinking of anyone else, one should act thus as long as life lasts. This is the duty of the Kshatriyas, and this is always my opinion.)

राज्यांशश्चाभ्यनुज्ञातो यो मे पित्रा पुराभवत् । न स लभ्यः पुनर्जातु मयि जीवति केशव ॥५-१२५-२२॥
rājyaṃśaścābhyanujñāto yo me pitrā purābhavat . na sa labhyaḥ punarjātu mayi jīvati keśava ॥5-125-22॥

yāvac ca rājā dhriyate dhṛtarāṣṭro janārdana । nyastaśastrā vayaṃ te vāpy upajīvāma mādhava ॥5-125-23॥

na tadadya punarlabhyaṃ pāṇḍavairvṛṣṇinandana । dhriyamāṇe mahābāho mayi samprati keśava ॥5-125-25॥

यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण माधव । तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥५-१२५-२६॥
yāvaddhi sūcyāstīkṣṇāyā vidhyedagreṇa mādhava । tāvadaparityājyaṃ bhūmernaḥ pāṇḍavānprati ॥5-125-26॥

(As long as, indeed, O Mādhava, the sharp point of a needle pierces, so long is the land towards the Pāṇḍavas not to be abandoned by us.)
