Pancharatra: When Krishna advises the King to override Duryodhana, Duryodhana departs. Then Krishna recommends sacrificing Duryodhana and his aids for the welfare of others.
शवैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः प्रहस्य दाशार्हः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः । दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१२६-१॥
tataḥ prahasya dāśārhaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ । duryodhanamidaṃ vākyamabravītkurusaṃsadi ॥5-126-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - descendant of the Daśārhas; क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः (krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ) - with eyes agitated by anger; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the assembly of the Kurus;]
(Then, smiling, the descendant of the Daśārhas, with eyes agitated by anger, said this speech to Duryodhana in the assembly of the Kurus.)
Then, with a smile and eyes filled with anger, the descendant of the Daśārhas addressed Duryodhana in the Kuru assembly.
लप्स्यसे वीरशयनं काममेतदवाप्स्यसि । स्थिरो भव सहामात्यो विमर्दो भविता महान् ॥५-१२६-२॥
lapsyase vīraśayanaṃ kāmam etad avāpsyasi । sthiro bhava sahāmātyo vimardo bhavitā mahān ॥5-126-2॥
[लप्स्यसे (lapsyase) - you will obtain; वीरशयनं (vīraśayanaṃ) - hero's bed; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; एतद् (etad) - this; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will achieve; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - steady; भव (bhava) - be; सहामात्यः (sahāmātyaḥ) - with ministers; विमर्दः (vimardaḥ) - conflict; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(You will obtain the hero's bed, you will achieve this desire. Be steady with ministers, the conflict will be great.)

यच्चैवं मन्यसे मूढ न मे कश्चिद्व्यतिक्रमः । पाण्डवेष्विति तत्सर्वं निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥५-१२६-३॥
yaccaivaṃ manyase mūḍha na me kaścidvyatikramaḥ । pāṇḍaveṣviti tatsarvaṃ nibodhata narādhipāḥ ॥5-126-3॥

(That which you think, O foolish one, that there is no transgression of mine among the Pandavas, understand all that, O kings.)
O kings, understand that everything you think, O foolish one, about there being no transgression of mine among the Pandavas, is indeed so.
श्रिया सन्तप्यमानेन पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् । त्वया दुर्मन्त्रितं द्यूतं सौबलेन च भारत ॥५-१२६-४॥
śriyā santapyamānena pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām । tvayā durmantritaṃ dyūtaṃ saubalena ca bhārata ॥5-126-4॥
[श्रिया (śriyā) - by wealth; सन्तप्यमानेन (santapyamānena) - being tormented; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great souls; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दुर्मन्त्रितं (durmantritaṃ) - ill-advised; द्यूतं (dyūtaṃ) - gambling; सौबलेन (saubalena) - by Saubala; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By wealth being tormented, of the Pāṇḍavas, great souls, by you, ill-advised gambling, by Saubala and, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the great souls of the Pāṇḍavas were tormented by wealth due to the ill-advised gambling by you and Saubala.
कथं च ज्ञातयस्तात श्रेयांसः साधुसंमताः । तथान्याय्यमुपस्थातुं जिह्मेनाजिह्मचारिणः ॥५-१२६-५॥
kathaṁ ca jñātayastāta śreyāṁsaḥ sādhu-saṁmatāḥ । tathānyāyyamupasthātuṁ jihmenājihmacāriṇaḥ ॥5-126-5॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; च (ca) - and; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - relatives; तात (tāta) - dear father; श्रेयांसः (śreyāṁsaḥ) - better; साधु (sādhu) - good; संमताः (saṁmatāḥ) - approved; तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्याय्यम् (anyāyyam) - unjust; उपस्थातुम् (upasthātum) - to approach; जिह्मेन (jihmena) - by crookedness; अजिह्मचारिणः (ajihmacāriṇaḥ) - those who do not act crookedly;]
(How, dear father, can relatives who are considered better and approved by the good, thus approach the unjust by crookedness, those who do not act crookedly?)
Dear father, how can relatives, who are esteemed and approved by the virtuous, resort to unjust means through deceit, against those who act righteously?
अक्षद्यूतं महाप्राज्ञ सतामरतिनाशनम् । असतां तत्र जायन्ते भेदाश्च व्यसनानि च ॥५-१२६-६॥
akṣadyūtaṃ mahāprājña satāmaratināśanam । asatāṃ tatra jāyante bhedāśca vyasanāni ca ॥5-126-6॥

(Dice-game, O wise one, is the destroyer of the pleasure of the virtuous. There, of the unvirtuous, arise divisions and calamities.)

तदिदं व्यसनं घोरं त्वया द्यूतमुखं कृतम् । असमीक्ष्य सदाचारैः सार्धं पापानुबन्धनैः ॥५-१२६-७॥

सम्यग्वृत्तेष्वलुब्धेषु सततं धर्मचारिषु । स्वेषु बन्धुषु कः साधुश्चरेदेवमसाम्प्रतम् ॥५-१२६-११॥
samyagvṛtteṣvalubdheṣu satataṃ dharmacāriṣu । sveṣu bandhuṣu kaḥ sādhuścaredevamasāmpratam ॥5-126-11॥

एवम्बुद्धिः पाण्डवेषु मिथ्यावृत्तिः सदा भवान् । कथं ते नापराधोऽस्ति पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ॥५-१२६-१६॥
evambuddhiḥ pāṇḍaveṣu mithyāvṛttiḥ sadā bhavān । kathaṁ te nāparādho'sti pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ॥5-126-16॥

कृत्वा बहून्यकार्याणि पाण्डवेषु नृशंसवत् । मिथ्यावृत्तिरनार्यः सन्नद्य विप्रतिपद्यसे ॥५-१२६-१७॥
kṛtvā bahūnyakāryāṇi pāṇḍaveṣu nṛśaṃsavat । mithyāvṛttiranāryaḥ sannadya vipratipadyase ॥5-126-17॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; अकार्याणि (akāryāṇi) - improper acts; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - towards the Pāṇḍavas; नृशंसवत् (nṛśaṃsavat) - cruelly; मिथ्यावृत्तिः (mithyāvṛttiḥ) - false conduct; अनार्यः (anāryaḥ) - ignoble; सन् (san) - being; अद्य (adya) - now; विप्रतिपद्यसे (vipratipadyase) - you behave;]

मातापितृभ्यां भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च । शाम्येति मुहुरुक्तोऽसि न च शाम्यसि पार्थिव ॥५-१२६-१८॥
mātāpitr̥bhyāṁ bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca । śāmyeti muhurukto'si na ca śāmyasi pārthiva ॥5-126-18॥
[मातापितृभ्यां (mātāpitr̥bhyāṁ) - by mother and father; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Drona; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; च (ca) - and; शाम्य (śāmya) - be calm; इति (iti) - thus; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - repeatedly; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - told; असि (asi) - you are; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शाम्यसि (śāmyasi) - you calm down; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(By mother and father, by Bhishma, by Drona, and by Vidura, you are repeatedly told 'be calm', but you do not calm down, O king.)
O king, despite being repeatedly advised by your mother, father, Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura to remain calm, you do not heed their advice.
शमे हि सुमहानर्थस्तव पार्थस्य चोभयोः । न च रोचयसे राजन्किमन्यद्बुद्धिलाघवात् ॥५-१२६-१९॥
śame hi sumahānarthastava pārthasya cobhayoḥ । na ca rocayase rājankimanyadbuddhilāghavāt ॥5-126-19॥
[शमे (śame) - in peace; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहानर्थः (sumahānarthaḥ) - great harm; तव (tava) - your; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Arjuna; च (ca) - and; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रोचयसे (rocayase) - you approve; राजन् (rājan) - O king; किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; बुद्धिलाघवात् (buddhilāghavāt) - due to lack of wisdom;]
(Indeed, in peace, there is great harm for both you and Arjuna. O king, you do not approve, what else due to lack of wisdom?)
Indeed, maintaining peace causes great harm to both you and Arjuna. O king, you do not approve of this, perhaps due to a lack of wisdom.
न शर्म प्राप्स्यसे राजन्नुत्क्रम्य सुहृदां वचः । अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च क्रियते पार्थिव त्वया ॥५-१२६-२०॥
na śarma prāpsyase rājannutkramya suhṛdāṃ vacaḥ । adharmyamayaśasyaṃ ca kriyate pārthiva tvayā ॥5-126-20॥
[न (na) - not; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उत्क्रम्य (utkramya) - transgressing; सुहृदां (suhṛdāṃ) - of friends; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अधर्म्यम् (adharmyam) - unrighteous; अयशस्यं (ayaśasyaṃ) - inglorious; च (ca) - and; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O prince; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(O king, by transgressing the words of friends, you will not obtain happiness. Unrighteous and inglorious acts are done by you, O prince.)
O king, you will not find happiness by ignoring the advice of your friends. The actions you undertake are unrighteous and bring dishonor, O prince.
एवं ब्रुवति दाशार्हे दुर्योधनममर्षणम् । दुःशासन इदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१२६-२१॥
evaṃ bruvati dāśārhe duryodhanamarṣaṇam । duḥśāsana idaṃ vākyamabravītkurusaṃsadi ॥5-126-21॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; दाशार्हे (dāśārhe) - to the descendant of the Daśārha; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - angry; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
(Thus, while the descendant of the Daśārha was speaking to the angry Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana said this speech in the Kuru assembly.)
As the descendant of the Daśārha spoke to the enraged Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana addressed the assembly of the Kurus with these words.
न चेत्सन्धास्यसे राजन्स्वेन कामेन पाण्डवैः । बद्ध्वा किल त्वां दास्यन्ति कुन्तीपुत्राय कौरवाः ॥५-१२६-२२॥
na cetsandhāsyase rājansvena kāmena pāṇḍavaiḥ । baddhvā kila tvāṃ dāsyanti kuntīputrāya kauravāḥ ॥5-126-22॥

(Thus spoken, then Dharma, by the command of the supreme lord, gave all the Daityas and Danavas, having bound them, to Varuna.)

तान्बद्ध्वा धर्मपाशैश्च स्वैश्च पाशैर्जलेश्वरः । वरुणः सागरे यत्तो नित्यं रक्षति दानवान् ॥५-१२६-४६॥
tānbaddhvā dharmapāśaiśca svaaiśca pāśairjaleśvaraḥ । varuṇaḥ sāgare yatto nityaṃ rakṣati dānavān ॥5-126-46॥

(Having bound them with the bonds of righteousness and with his own bonds, the lord of waters, Varuna, always protects the demons in the ocean.)

(One should renounce a person for the sake of the family; the family for the sake of the village; the village for the sake of the country; and the earth for the sake of the self.)
For the welfare of the family, a person should be sacrificed; for the welfare of the village, a family should be sacrificed; for the welfare of the country, a village should be sacrificed; and for one's own welfare, the earth should be sacrificed.
राजन्दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा ततः संशाम्य पाण्डवैः । त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥५-१२६-४९॥
rājanduryodhanaṃ baddhvā tataḥ saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ । tvatkṛte na vinaśyeyuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ॥5-126-49॥

(O king, having bound Duryodhana, then having reconciled with the Pandavas, for your sake, the Kshatriyas would not perish, O best of the Kshatriyas.)
O king, if Duryodhana were captured and reconciled with the Pandavas, then for your sake, the Kshatriyas would not face destruction, O best of the Kshatriyas.
