असिद्धानुनये कृष्णे कुरुभ्यः पाण्डवान्गते । अभिगम्य पृथां क्षत्ता शनैः शोचन्निवाब्रवीत् ॥५-१४२-१॥
asiddhānunaye kṛṣṇe kurubhyaḥ pāṇḍavāṅgate । abhigamya pṛthāṃ kṣattā śanaiḥ śocannivābravīt ॥5-142-1॥

You are aware of my constant favor, O son of Jiva. Despite my pleas, Suyodhana does not heed my words.
उपपन्नो ह्यसौ राजा चेदिपाञ्चालकेकयैः । भीमार्जुनाभ्यां कृष्णेन युयुधानयमैरपि ॥५-१४२-३॥

उपप्लव्ये निविष्टोऽपि धर्ममेव युधिष्ठिरः । काङ्क्षते ज्ञातिसौहार्दाद्बलवान्दुर्बलो यथा ॥५-१४२-४॥

अधर्मेण हि धर्मिष्ठं हृतं वै राज्यमीदृशम् । येषां तेषामयं धर्मः सानुबन्धो भविष्यति ॥५-१४२-७॥
adharmeṇa hi dharmiṣṭhaṃ hṛtaṃ vai rājyamīdṛśam । yeṣāṃ teṣāmayaṃ dharmaḥ sānubandho bhaviṣyati ॥5-142-7॥

(Indeed, by unrighteousness, such a righteous kingdom has been taken away. For those whose this righteousness will be with consequences.)
Indeed, the righteous kingdom has been taken away by unrighteous means. For those people, this act of righteousness will have consequences.
ह्रियमाणे बलाद्धर्मे कुरुभिः को न सञ्ज्वरेत् । असाम्ना केशवे याते समुद्योक्ष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥५-१४२-८॥
hriyamāṇe balāddharme kurubhiḥ ko na sañjvaret । asāmnā keśave yāte samudyokṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ॥5-142-8॥
[ह्रियमाणे (hriyamāṇe) - being taken away; बलात् (balāt) - by force; धर्मे (dharme) - righteousness; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kauravas; कः (kaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; सञ्ज्वरेत् (sañjvaret) - would not be agitated; असाम्ना (asāmnā) - without peace; केशवे (keśave) - when Keshava; याते (yāte) - has gone; समुद्योक्ष्यन्ति (samudyokṣyanti) - will rise; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
(When righteousness is being taken away by force by the Kauravas, who would not be agitated? Without peace, when Keshava has gone, the Pandavas will rise.)
When the Kauravas forcibly take away righteousness, who would not be disturbed? Without peace and with Keshava gone, the Pandavas will prepare for action.
ततः कुरूणामनयो भविता वीरनाशनः । चिन्तयन्न लभे निद्रामहःसु च निशासु च ॥५-१४२-९॥
tataḥ kurūṇāmanayo bhavitā vīranāśanaḥ । cintayanna labhe nidrāmahaḥsu ca niśāsu ca ॥5-142-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; अनयः (anayaḥ) - destruction; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; वीरनाशनः (vīranāśanaḥ) - destroyer of heroes; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; न (na) - not; लभे (labhe) - obtain; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; अहःसु (ahaḥsu) - in the days; च (ca) - and; निशासु (niśāsu) - in the nights; च (ca) - and;]
(Then, the destruction of the Kurus will be the destroyer of heroes. Thinking, I do not obtain sleep in the days and in the nights.)
Then, the destruction of the Kurus will lead to the downfall of heroes. While contemplating, I find no sleep either during the days or the nights.
श्रुत्वा तु कुन्ती तद्वाक्यमर्थकामेन भाषितम् । अनिष्टनन्ती दुःखार्ता मनसा विममर्श ह ॥५-१४२-१०॥
śrutvā tu kuntī tadvākyamarthakāmena bhāṣitam । aniṣṭanantī duḥkhārtā manasā vimamarśa ha ॥5-142-10॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; तद्वाक्यम् (tadvākyam) - those words; अर्थकामेन (arthakāmena) - with desire for meaning; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; अनिष्टनन्ती (aniṣṭanantī) - lamenting; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted with sorrow; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; विममर्श (vimamarśa) - reflected; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having heard those words spoken with desire for meaning, Kunti, lamenting and afflicted with sorrow, reflected in mind indeed.)
Upon hearing those words spoken with intent, Kunti, filled with sorrow and lament, pondered deeply in her mind.
धिगस्त्वर्थं यत्कृतेऽयं महाञ्ज्ञातिवधे क्षयः । वर्त्स्यते सुहृदां ह्येषां युद्धेऽस्मिन्वै पराभवः ॥५-१४२-११॥
dhigastvarthaṃ yatkṛte'yaṃ mahāñjñātivadhe kṣayaḥ । vartsyate suhṛdāṃ hyeṣāṃ yuddhe'sminvai parābhavaḥ ॥5-142-11॥
[धिक् (dhik) - shame; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; अर्थम् (artham) - for the sake; यत् (yat) - which; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake; अयम् (ayam) - this; महान् (mahān) - great; ज्ञातिवधे (jñātivadhe) - in the slaughter of relatives; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; वर्त्स्यते (vartsyate) - will occur; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; हि (hi) - indeed; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वै (vai) - indeed; पराभवः (parābhavaḥ) - defeat;]
(Shame let it be for the sake which for the sake this great in the slaughter of relatives destruction will occur of friends indeed of these in battle in this indeed defeat.)
Shame on the purpose for which this great destruction in the slaughter of relatives will occur, indeed, the defeat of these friends in this battle.
पाण्डवाश्चेदिपाञ्चाला यादवाश्च समागताः । भारतैर्यदि योत्स्यन्ति किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥५-१४२-१२॥
pāṇḍavāścedipāñcālā yādavāśca samāgatāḥ । bhāratairyadi yotsyanti kiṃ nu duḥkhamataḥ param ॥5-142-12॥

(Pandavas and Chedis and Panchalas and Yadavas have assembled. If they will fight with the Bharatas, what sorrow indeed is greater than this?)
The Pandavas, Chedis, Panchalas, and Yadavas have gathered together. If they engage in battle with the Bharatas, what sorrow could be greater than this?
पश्ये दोषं ध्रुवं युद्धे तथा युद्धे पराभवम् । अधनस्य मृतं श्रेयो न हि ज्ञातिक्षये जयः ॥५-१४२-१३॥
paśye doṣaṃ dhruvaṃ yuddhe tathā yuddhe parābhavam । adhanasya mṛtaṃ śreyo na hi jñātikṣaye jayaḥ ॥5-142-13॥

(See fault certain in battle, also in battle defeat. Of the poor, death is better, not indeed in the destruction of relatives victory.)
One should see the certain fault in battle, as well as the inevitable defeat. For the poor, death is preferable, for victory does not lie in the destruction of one's relatives.
पितामहः शान्तनव आचार्यश्च युधां पतिः । कर्णश्च धार्तराष्ट्रार्थं वर्धयन्ति भयं मम ॥५-१४२-१४॥
pitāmahaḥ śāntanava ācāryaśca yudhāṃ patiḥ । karṇaśca dhārtarāṣṭrārthaṃ vardhayanti bhayaṃ mama ॥5-142-14॥

(Grandfather, the son of Śantanu, and the teacher, the lord of battles, and Karna, for the sake of Dhritarashtra's sons, increase my fear.)
My fear increases because of the grandfather, the son of Śantanu, the teacher, and Karna, who are all supporting the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle.
नाचार्यः कामवाञ्शिष्यैर्द्रोणो युध्येत जातु चित् । पाण्डवेषु कथं हार्दं कुर्यान्न च पितामहः ॥५-१४२-१५॥

Reflecting on how my actions could be virtuous and free from fault, I offer my respects to that Brahmin.
कौतूहलात्तु तं लब्ध्वा बालिश्यादाचरं तदा । कन्या सती देवमर्कमासादयमहं ततः ॥५-१४२-२४॥
