ततः सूर्यान्निश्चरितां कर्णः शुश्राव भारतीम् । दुरत्ययां प्रणयिनीं पितृवद्भास्करेरिताम् ॥५-१४४-१॥
tataḥ sūryānniścaritāṃ karṇaḥ śuśrāva bhāratīm । duratyayāṃ praṇayinīṃ pitṛvadbhāskareritām ॥5-144-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सूर्यात् (sūryāt) - from the sun; निश्चरिताम् (niścaritām) - emerged; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; भारतीम् (bhāratīm) - speech; दुरत्ययाम् (duratyayām) - difficult to overcome; प्रणयिनीम् (praṇayinīm) - affectionate; पितृवत् (pitṛvat) - like a father; भास्करेरिताम् (bhāskareritām) - uttered by Bhaskara;]
(Then Karna heard the speech emerged from the sun, difficult to overcome, affectionate, uttered by Bhaskara like a father.)

सत्यमाह पृथा वाक्यं कर्ण मातृवचः कुरु । श्रेयस्ते स्यान्नरव्याघ्र सर्वमाचरतस्तथा ॥५-१४४-२॥
satyam āha pṛthā vākyaṃ karṇa mātṛvacaḥ kuru । śreyaste syān naravyāghra sarvam ācaratas tathā ॥5-144-2॥
[सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; आह (āha) - said; पृथा (pṛthā) - Kunti; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; मातृवचः (mātṛvacaḥ) - mother's words; कुरु (kuru) - do; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; ते (te) - for you; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचरतः (ācarataḥ) - acting; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Kunti said the truth, 'O Karna, do your mother's words. It would be better for you, O tiger among men, thus acting all.')
Kunti spoke truthfully, 'O Karna, follow your mother's advice. It would be better for you, O great warrior, to act accordingly.'
एवमुक्तस्य मात्रा च स्वयं पित्रा च भानुना । चचाल नैव कर्णस्य मतिः सत्यधृतेस्तदा ॥५-१४४-३॥
evamuktasya mātrā ca svayaṃ pitrā ca bhānunā । cacāla naiva karṇasya matiḥ satyadhṛtestadā ॥5-144-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तस्य (uktasya) - having been told; मात्रा (mātrā) - by mother; च (ca) - and; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; पित्रा (pitrā) - by father; च (ca) - and; भानुना (bhānunā) - by Bhanu; चचाल (cacāla) - wavered; नैव (naiva) - not at all; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; सत्यधृतेः (satyadhṛteḥ) - of the one firm in truth; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having been told by his mother and himself by his father and Bhanu, the mind of Karna, firm in truth, did not waver at all then.)
Despite being urged by his mother, father, and Bhanu, Karna's resolve, firm in truth, remained unwavering.

न ते न श्रद्दधे वाक्यं क्षत्रिये भाषितं त्वया । धर्मद्वारं ममैतत्स्यान्नियोगकरणं तव ॥५-१४४-४॥
na te na śraddadhe vākyaṃ kṣatriye bhāṣitaṃ tvayā । dharmadvāraṃ mamaitatsyānniyogakaraṇaṃ tava ॥5-144-4॥

अकरोन्मयि यत्पापं भवती सुमहात्ययम् । अवकीर्णोऽस्मि ते तेन तद्यशःकीर्तिनाशनम् ॥५-१४४-५॥
akaronmayi yatpāpaṃ bhavatī sumahātyayam । avakīrṇo'smi te tena tadyaśaḥkīrtināśanam ॥5-144-5॥
[अकरोत् (akarot) - did; मयि (mayi) - in me; यत् (yat) - which; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; भवती (bhavatī) - you; सुमहात्ययम् (sumahātyayam) - great disaster; अवकीर्णः (avakīrṇaḥ) - disgraced; अस्मि (asmi) - am; ते (te) - by you; तेन (tena) - by that; तत् (tad) - that; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; कीर्तिनाशनम् (kīrtināśanam) - destroyer of glory;]
(You did a great sin in me, I am disgraced by you by that, that is the destroyer of fame and glory.)
You have committed a great sin against me, causing a great disaster. I am disgraced by you, and that act is the destroyer of fame and glory.
अहं च क्षत्रियो जातो न प्राप्तः क्षत्रसत्क्रियाम् । त्वत्कृते किं नु पापीयः शत्रुः कुर्यान्ममाहितम् ॥५-१४४-६॥
ahaṁ ca kṣatriyo jāto na prāptaḥ kṣatrasatkriyām । tvatkṛte kiṁ nu pāpīyaḥ śatruḥ kuryānmamāhitam ॥5-144-6॥

(I, born a warrior, have not obtained the honor of a warrior. What indeed would a more sinful enemy do to me for your sake?)
I was born a warrior but have not received the honor due to one. What worse harm could an enemy do to me for your sake?
क्रियाकाले त्वनुक्रोशमकृत्वा त्वमिमं मम । हीनसंस्कारसमयमद्य मां समचूचुदः ॥५-१४४-७॥
kriyākāle tvanukrośamakṛtvā tvamimaṃ mama । hīnasaṃskārasamayamadya māṃ samacūcudaḥ ॥5-144-7॥
[क्रियाकाले (kriyākāle) - at the time of action; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुक्रोशम् (anukrośam) - compassion; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - without doing; इमं (imam) - this; मम (mama) - my; हीनसंस्कारसमयम् (hīnasaṃskārasamayam) - in a time of low refinement; अद्य (adya) - today; माम् (mām) - me; समचूचुदः (samacūcudaḥ) - you have hurt;]
(At the time of action, without showing compassion, you have hurt me today in this time of low refinement.)

न वै मम हितं पूर्वं मातृवच्चेष्टितं त्वया । सा मां सम्बोधयस्यद्य केवलात्महितैषिणी ॥५-१४४-८॥
na vai mama hitaṁ pūrvaṁ mātṛvacceṣṭitaṁ tvayā । sā māṁ sambodhaya syadya kevalātmahitaiṣiṇī ॥5-144-8॥
[न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; हितं (hitaṁ) - welfare; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - before; मातृवत् (mātṛvat) - like a mother; चेष्टितं (ceṣṭitaṁ) - acted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सा (sā) - she; मां (māṁ) - me; सम्बोधय (sambodhaya) - enlighten; स्य (syadya) - now; केवल (kevala) - only; आत्म (ātma) - self; हितैषिणी (hitaiṣiṇī) - well-wisher;]
(Not indeed my welfare before like a mother acted by you. She me enlighten now only self well-wisher.)
You did not act for my welfare like a mother before. Now, she enlightens me, being solely a well-wisher of herself.
कृष्णेन सहितात्को वै न व्यथेत धनञ्जयात् । कोऽद्य भीतं न मां विद्यात्पार्थानां समितिं गतम् ॥५-१४४-९॥
kṛṣṇena sahitātko vai na vyatheta dhanañjayāt । ko'dya bhītaṃ na māṃ vidyāt pārthānāṃ samitiṃ gatam ॥5-144-9॥
[कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Krishna; सहितात् (sahitāt) - accompanied; कः (kaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; व्यथेत (vyatheta) - would be distressed; धनञ्जयात् (dhanañjayāt) - by Dhananjaya; कः (kaḥ) - who; अद्य (adya) - today; भीतं (bhītam) - afraid; न (na) - not; मां (māṃ) - me; विद्यात् (vidyāt) - would know; पार्थानां (pārthānāṃ) - of the sons of Pritha; समितिं (samitiṃ) - assembly; गतम् (gatam) - gone;]
(Who indeed would not be distressed by Dhananjaya accompanied by Krishna? Who today would not know me as gone to the assembly of the sons of Pritha?)
Who would not be troubled by Arjuna when he is with Krishna? Who today would not recognize me as having gone to the assembly of the Pandavas?
अभ्राता विदितः पूर्वं युद्धकाले प्रकाशितः । पाण्डवान्यदि गच्छामि किं मां क्षत्रं वदिष्यति ॥५-१४४-१०॥
abhrātā viditaḥ pūrvaṃ yuddhakāle prakāśitaḥ । pāṇḍavānyadi gacchāmi kiṃ māṃ kṣatraṃ vadiṣyati ॥5-144-10॥
[अभ्राता (abhrātā) - brotherless; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; युद्धकाले (yuddhakāle) - in the time of war; प्रकाशितः (prakāśitaḥ) - revealed; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pandavas; यदि (yadi) - if; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; किं (kiṃ) - what; मां (māṃ) - me; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - the Kshatriya; वदिष्यति (vadiṣyati) - will say;]
(Brotherless known before in the time of war revealed. To the Pandavas if I go, what will the Kshatriya say to me?)
Previously known as brotherless and revealed during the time of war, if I go to the Pandavas, what will the Kshatriya say to me?
सर्वकामैः संविभक्तः पूजितश्च सदा भृशम् । अहं वै धार्तराष्ट्राणां कुर्यां तदफलं कथम् ॥५-१४४-११॥
sarvakāmaiḥ saṃvibhaktaḥ pūjitaśca sadā bhṛśam । ahaṃ vai dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ kuryāṃ tadaphalaṃ katham ॥5-144-11॥
[सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; संविभक्तः (saṃvibhaktaḥ) - distributed; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; अहम् (aham) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām) - of the sons of Dhritarashtra; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - would do; तत् (tat) - that; अफलम् (aphalam) - fruitless; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(With all desires distributed, worshipped excessively always, how indeed would I make that fruitless for the sons of Dhritarashtra?)
How could I, who is always excessively worshipped and fulfilled with all desires, make the efforts of the sons of Dhritarashtra fruitless?
उपनह्य परैर्वैरं ये मां नित्यमुपासते । नमस्कुर्वन्ति च सदा वसवो वासवं यथा ॥५-१४४-१२॥
upanahya parairvairaṁ ye māṁ nityamupāsate । namaskurvanti ca sadā vasavo vāsavaṁ yathā ॥5-144-12॥
[उपनह्य (upanahya) - having bound; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; वैरं (vairaṁ) - enmity; ये (ye) - who; मां (māṁ) - me; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उपासते (upāsate) - worship; नमस्कुर्वन्ति (namaskurvanti) - salute; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - Vasus; वासवं (vāsavaṁ) - Indra; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Having bound enmity by others, those who always worship me and always salute like the Vasus to Indra.)
Those who have bound enmity by others and always worship and salute me, just as the Vasus do to Indra.
मम प्राणेन ये शत्रूञ्शक्ताः प्रतिसमासितुम् । मन्यन्तेऽद्य कथं तेषामहं भिन्द्यां मनोरथम् ॥५-१४४-१३॥
mama prāṇena ye śatrūñśaktāḥ pratisamāsitum । manyante'dya kathaṃ teṣāmahaṃ bhindyāṃ manoratham ॥5-144-13॥
[मम (mama) - my; प्राणेन (prāṇena) - by life; ये (ye) - who; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - capable; प्रतिसमासितुम् (pratisamāsitum) - to oppose; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - think; अद्य (adya) - today; कथम् (katham) - how; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; अहम् (aham) - I; भिन्द्याम् (bhindyām) - would break; मनोरथम् (manoratham) - desire;]
(By my life, who are capable of opposing enemies, think today how I would break their desire.)
Today, those who are capable of opposing enemies with my life, wonder how I might shatter their hopes.
मया प्लवेन सङ्ग्रामं तितीर्षन्ति दुरत्ययम् । अपारे पारकामा ये त्यजेयं तानहं कथम् ॥५-१४४-१४॥
mayā plavena saṅgrāmaṃ titīrṣanti duratyayam । apāre pārakāmā ye tyajeyaṃ tānahaṃ katham ॥5-144-14॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; प्लवेन (plavena) - with a raft; सङ्ग्रामं (saṅgrāmaṃ) - battle; तितीर्षन्ति (titīrṣanti) - wish to cross; दुरत्ययम् (duratyayam) - difficult to cross; अपारे (apāre) - boundless; पारकामा (pārakāmā) - desiring to cross; ये (ye) - who; त्यजेयं (tyajeyaṃ) - abandon; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(By me with a raft, they wish to cross the battle difficult to cross. How can I abandon those who desire to cross the boundless?)
With my help, they wish to cross the difficult battle. How can I abandon those who wish to cross the boundless ocean?
अयं हि कालः सम्प्राप्तो धार्तराष्ट्रोपजीविनाम् । निर्वेष्टव्यं मया तत्र प्राणानपरिरक्षता ॥५-१४४-१५॥
ayaṁ hi kālaḥ samprāpto dhārtarāṣṭropajīvinām । nirveṣṭavyaṁ mayā tatra prāṇānaparirakṣatā ॥5-144-15॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; धार्तराष्ट्रोपजीविनाम् (dhārtarāṣṭropajīvinām) - of the dependents of Dhritarashtra; निर्वेष्टव्यम् (nirveṣṭavyam) - must be executed; मया (mayā) - by me; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; अपरिरक्षता (aparirakṣatā) - without protecting;]
(This time has indeed arrived for the dependents of Dhritarashtra; it must be executed by me there without protecting lives.)
Indeed, the time has come for me to act upon the dependents of Dhritarashtra without regard for their lives.
कृतार्थाः सुभृता ये हि कृत्यकाल उपस्थिते । अनवेक्ष्य कृतं पापा विकुर्वन्त्यनवस्थिताः ॥५-१४४-१६॥
kṛtārthāḥ subhṛtā ye hi kṛtyakāla upasthite । anavekṣya kṛtaṃ pāpā vikurvantyanavasthitāḥ ॥5-144-16॥
[कृतार्थाः (kṛtārthāḥ) - successful; सुभृता (subhṛtā) - well-nourished; ये (ye) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; कृत्यकाल (kṛtyakāla) - time of action; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - arrived; अनवेक्ष्य (anavekṣya) - without considering; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; पापा (pāpā) - evil ones; विकुर्वन्ति (vikurvanti) - act wrongly; अनवस्थिताः (anavasthitāḥ) - unstable;]
(Successful and well-nourished are those who, indeed, when the time of action arrives, without considering, the evil ones act wrongly, being unstable.)
Those who are successful and well-nourished act appropriately when the time for action arrives, while the evil ones, being unstable, act wrongly without consideration.
राजकिल्बिषिणां तेषां भर्तृपिण्डापहारिणाम् । नैवायं न परो लोको विद्यते पापकर्मणाम् ॥५-१४४-१७॥
rājakilbiṣiṇāṃ teṣāṃ bhartṛpiṇḍāpahāriṇām । naivāyaṃ na paro loko vidyate pāpakarmaṇām ॥5-144-17॥
[राजकिल्बिषिणां (rājakilbiṣiṇāṃ) - of those who have sinned against the king; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; भर्तृपिण्डापहारिणाम् (bhartṛpiṇḍāpahāriṇām) - who have stolen the offerings to the husband; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; परः (paraḥ) - another; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; पापकर्मणाम् (pāpakarmaṇām) - of the evil-doers;]
(Of those who have sinned against the king, who have stolen the offerings to the husband, neither this nor another world exists for the evil-doers.)
For those who have committed sins against the king and have stolen offerings meant for the husband, there is no existence in this world or any other for the evil-doers.
धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणामर्थे योत्स्यामि ते सुतैः । बलं च शक्तिं चास्थाय न वै त्वय्यनृतं वदे ॥५-१४४-१८॥
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇāmarthe yotsyāmi te sutaiḥ । balaṃ ca śaktiṃ cāsthāya na vai tvayyanṛtaṃ vade ॥5-144-18॥
[धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; योत्स्यामि (yotsyāmi) - I will fight; ते (te) - your; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - with sons; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; च (ca) - and; शक्तिं (śaktiṃ) - power; च (ca) - and; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - relying on; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अनृतं (anṛtaṃ) - falsehood; वदे (vade) - I speak;]
(For the sake of Dhritarashtra's sons, I will fight with your sons, relying on strength and power. Indeed, I do not speak falsehood in you.)

आनृशंस्यमथो वृत्तं रक्षन्सत्पुरुषोचितम् । अतोऽर्थकरमप्येतन्न करोम्यद्य ते वचः ॥५-१४४-१९॥
ānṛśaṃsyamatho vṛttaṃ rakṣansatpuruṣocitam । ato'rthakaramapyetanna karomyadya te vacaḥ ॥5-144-19॥
[आनृशंस्यम् (ānṛśaṃsyam) - kindness; अथ (atha) - then; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; रक्षन् (rakṣan) - protecting; सत्पुरुषोचितम् (satpuruṣocitam) - befitting a noble person; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अर्थकरम् (arthakaram) - beneficial; अपि (api) - even; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अद्य (adya) - today; ते (te) - your; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Kindness, then conduct protecting befitting a noble person; therefore, even though beneficial, I do not do this today, your words.)

न तु तेऽयं समारम्भो मयि मोघो भविष्यति । वध्यान्विषह्यान्सङ्ग्रामे न हनिष्यामि ते सुतान् ॥ युधिष्ठिरं च भीमं च यमौ चैवार्जुनादृते ॥५-१४४-२०॥
na tu te'yaṃ samārambho mayi mogho bhaviṣyati । vadhyānviṣahyānsaṅgrāme na haniṣyāmi te sutān ॥ yudhiṣṭhiraṃ ca bhīmaṃ ca yamau caivārjunādṛte ॥5-144-20॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; अयम् (ayam) - this; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - effort; मयि (mayi) - in me; मोघः (moghaḥ) - vain; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; वध्यान् (vadhyān) - those to be killed; विषह्यान् (viṣahyān) - those to be endured; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; न (na) - not; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; ते (te) - your; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; च (ca) - and; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhima; च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the twins; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्जुनादृते (arjunādṛte) - except Arjuna;]
(But this effort of yours will not be in vain in me. I will not kill your sons, those to be killed and those to be endured, in battle, except Yudhishthira, Bhima, the twins, and indeed Arjuna.)
However, your efforts will not be wasted on me. I will spare your sons in battle, except for Yudhishthira, Bhima, the twins, and Arjuna.
अर्जुनेन समं युद्धं मम यौधिष्ठिरे बले । अर्जुनं हि निहत्याजौ सम्प्राप्तं स्यात्फलं मया ॥ यशसा चापि युज्येयं निहतः सव्यसाचिना ॥५-१४४-२१॥

(By Arjuna, an equal battle in the strength of Yudhishthira is mine. Indeed, having slain Arjuna in battle, the fruit would be attained by me. With fame also, I would be joined, slain by the ambidextrous one.)

(Your five sons, O illustrious one, will never perish, whether without Arjuna, with Karna, or with Arjuna, if I am slain.)

इति कर्णवचः श्रुत्वा कुन्ती दुःखात्प्रवेपती । उवाच पुत्रमाश्लिष्य कर्णं धैर्यादकम्पितम् ॥५-१४४-२३॥
iti karṇavacaḥ śrutvā kuntī duḥkhātpravepatī । uvāca putramāśliṣya karṇaṃ dhairyādakampitam ॥5-144-23॥

(Thus, having heard Karna's words, Kunti, trembling from sorrow, said, embracing her son Karna, with unshaken courage.)

(Thus indeed, by this, the Kauravas will go to destruction, as you speak, Karna, but fate is stronger.)

त्वया चतुर्णां भ्रातॄणामभयं शत्रुकर्शन । दत्तं तत्प्रतिजानीहि सङ्गरप्रतिमोचनम् ॥५-१४४-२५॥
tvayā caturṇāṃ bhrātṝṇām abhayaṃ śatrukarśana । dattaṃ tat pratijānīhi saṅgarapratimocanam ॥5-144-25॥
