एवमुक्ते तु गान्धार्या धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः । दुर्योधनमुवाचेदं नृपमध्ये जनाधिप ॥५-१४७-१॥
evamukte tu gāndhāryā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ । duryodhanamuvācedaṃ nṛpamadhye janādhipa ॥5-147-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - by Gāndhārī; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनेश्वरः (janeśvaraḥ) - the lord of people; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - to Duryodhana; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; नृपमध्ये (nṛpamadhye) - in the midst of kings; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(Thus, having been spoken by Gāndhārī, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of people, said this to Duryodhana in the midst of kings, O ruler of men.)
Upon hearing Gāndhārī's words, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra addressed Duryodhana amidst the assembly of kings, O ruler of men.
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि पुत्रक । तथा तत्कुरु भद्रं ते यद्यस्ति पितृगौरवम् ॥५-१४७-२॥
duryodhana nibodhedaṁ yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi putraka . tathā tatkuru bhadraṁ te yadyasti pitṛgauravam ..5-147-2..
[दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; इदं (idaṁ) - this; यत् (yat) - which; त्वां (tvāṁ) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; कुरु (kuru) - do; भद्रं (bhadraṁ) - good; ते (te) - your; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्ति (asti) - there is; पितृगौरवम् (pitṛgauravam) - respect for father;]
(Duryodhana, understand this which I will say to you, O son. Thus, do that good of yours if there is respect for father.)
Duryodhana, listen to what I am going to tell you, my son. Do accordingly for your own good if you have respect for your father.
सोमः प्रजापतिः पूर्वं कुरूणां वंशवर्धनः । सोमाद्बभूव षष्ठो वै ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः ॥५-१४७-३॥
somaḥ prajāpatiḥ pūrvaṃ kurūṇāṃ vaṃśavardhanaḥ । somādbabhūva ṣaṣṭho vai yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ ॥5-147-3॥
[सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - lord of creatures; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṃ) - of the Kurus; वंशवर्धनः (vaṃśavardhanaḥ) - dynasty increaser; सोमात् (somāt) - from Soma; बभूव (babhūva) - was born; षष्ठः (ṣaṣṭhaḥ) - sixth; वै (vai) - indeed; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; नहुषात्मजः (nahuṣātmajaḥ) - son of Nahusha;]
(Soma, the lord of creatures, was formerly the dynasty increaser of the Kurus. From Soma was indeed born the sixth, Yayati, the son of Nahusha.)
Soma, the progenitor and lord of all beings, was once the enhancer of the Kuru dynasty. From Soma was born the sixth descendant, Yayati, the son of Nahusha.
तस्य पुत्रा बभूवुश्च पञ्च राजर्षिसत्तमाः । तेषां यदुर्महातेजा ज्येष्ठः समभवत्प्रभुः ॥५-१४७-४॥
tasya putrā babhūvuśca pañca rājarṣisattamāḥ । teṣāṃ yadurmahātejā jyeṣṭhaḥ samabhavatprabhuḥ ॥5-147-4॥

(His sons became five excellent royal sages. Among them, Yadu, the greatly powerful, became the eldest lord.)

पूरुर्यवीयांश्च ततो योऽस्माकं वंशवर्धनः । शर्मिष्ठायाः सम्प्रसूतो दुहितुर्वृषपर्वणः ॥५-१४७-५॥
pūruryavīyāṃśca tato yo'smākaṃ vaṃśavardhanaḥ । śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ samprasūto duhiturvṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥5-147-5॥

यदुश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ देवयान्याः सुतोऽभवत् । दौहित्रस्तात शुक्रस्य काव्यस्यामिततेजसः ॥५-१४७-६॥

(Yadu, O best of the Bharatas, became the son of Devayani and the grandson, O father, of Shukra, of Kavi, of immeasurable splendor.)
Yadu, the illustrious son of Devayani, was also the grandson of the wise and radiant Shukra, O esteemed Bharata.
यादवानां कुलकरो बलवान्वीर्यसंमतः । अवमेने स तु क्षत्रं दर्पपूर्णः सुमन्दधीः ॥५-१४७-७॥
yādavānāṃ kulakaro balavānvīryasaṃmataḥ । avamene sa tu kṣatraṃ darpapūrṇaḥ sumandadhīḥ ॥5-147-7॥
[यादवानां (yādavānāṃ) - of the Yadavas; कुलकरः (kulakaraḥ) - family maker; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; वीर्यसंमतः (vīryasaṃmataḥ) - respected for valor; अवमेने (avamene) - disregarded; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the Kshatriyas; दर्पपूर्णः (darpapūrṇaḥ) - full of pride; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - very foolish;]
(The family maker of the Yadavas, strong and respected for valor, he disregarded the Kshatriyas, but was full of pride and very foolish.)
The leader of the Yadavas, known for his strength and valor, arrogantly disregarded the Kshatriyas, being full of pride and quite foolish.
न चातिष्ठत्पितुः शास्त्रे बलदर्पविमोहितः । अवमेने च पितरं भ्रातॄंश्चाप्यपराजितः ॥५-१४७-८॥
na cātiṣṭhatpituḥ śāstre baladarpavimohitaḥ । avamene ca pitaraṃ bhrātṝṃścāpyaparājitaḥ ॥5-147-8॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - stood; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; शास्त्रे (śāstre) - in the teachings; बल (bala) - strength; दर्प (darpa) - pride; विमोहितः (vimohitaḥ) - deluded; अवमेने (avamene) - disrespected; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - undefeated;]
(Not standing in the teachings of the father, deluded by the pride of strength, he disrespected the father and also the undefeated brothers.)

पृथिव्यां चतुरन्तायां यदुरेवाभवद्बली । वशे कृत्वा स नृपतीनवसन्नागसाह्वये ॥५-१४७-९॥
pṛthivyāṃ caturantāyāṃ yadurevābhavadbalī । vaśe kṛtvā sa nṛpatīnavasannāgasāhvaye ॥5-147-9॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; चतुरन्तायां (caturantāyāṃ) - extending to the four ends; यदुरेव (yadureva) - Yadu indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; बली (balī) - powerful; वशे (vaśe) - under control; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; स (sa) - he; नृपतीन् (nṛpatīn) - kings; अवसन् (avasan) - dwelt; नागसाह्वये (nāgasāhvaye) - in Nāgasāhvaya;]
(On the earth extending to the four ends, Yadu indeed became powerful; having made the kings under control, he dwelt in Nāgasāhvaya.)
Yadu became powerful on the earth extending to all four corners; he brought the kings under his control and resided in Nāgasāhvaya.
तं पिता परमक्रुद्धो ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः । शशाप पुत्रं गान्धारे राज्याच्च व्यपरोपयत् ॥५-१४७-१०॥
taṃ pitā paramakrudhdo yayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ । śaśāpa putraṃ gāndhāre rājyācca vyaparopayat ॥5-147-10॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; पिता (pitā) - father; परमक्रुद्धः (paramakrudhdaḥ) - very angry; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; नहुषात्मजः (nahuṣātmajaḥ) - son of Nahusha; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - in Gandhara; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; च (ca) - and; व्यपरोपयत् (vyaparopayat) - removed;]
(Him, the father, very angry, Yayati, son of Nahusha, cursed the son in Gandhara and removed him from the kingdom.)

य चैनमन्ववर्तन्त भ्रातरो बलदर्पितम् । शशाप तानपि क्रुद्धो ययातिस्तनयानथ ॥५-१४७-११॥
ya cai nam anvavartanta bhrātaro baladarpitam । śaśāpa tān api kruddho yayātis tanayān atha ॥5-147-11॥

(And the brothers, arrogant with strength, who followed this, Yayati, angry, then cursed those sons also.)
Yayati, in his anger, cursed his sons who were arrogant with their strength and followed him.
यवीयांसं ततः पूरुं पुत्रं स्ववशवर्तिनम् । राज्ये निवेशयामास विधेयं नृपसत्तमः ॥५-१४७-१२॥
yavīyāṁsaṁ tataḥ pūruṁ putraṁ svavaśavartinam । rājye niveśayāmāsa vidheyaṁ nṛpasattamaḥ ॥5-147-12॥
[यवीयांसम् (yavīyāṁsam) - younger; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पूरुम् (pūrum) - Puru; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; स्ववशवर्तिनम् (svavaśavartinam) - obedient; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; निवेशयामास (niveśayāmāsa) - installed; विधेयं (vidheyaṁ) - submissive; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - the best of kings;]
(Then the best of kings installed his obedient younger son Puru in the kingdom.)
The noble king then appointed his younger son Puru, who was obedient and submissive, to rule the kingdom.
एवं ज्येष्ठोऽप्यथोत्सिक्तो न राज्यमभिजायते । यवीयांसोऽभिजायन्ते राज्यं वृद्धोपसेवया ॥५-१४७-१३॥
evaṃ jyeṣṭho'pyathotsikto na rājyamabhijāyate । yavīyāmso'bhijāyante rājyaṃ vṛddhopasevayā ॥5-147-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - then; उत्सिक्तः (utsiktaḥ) - arrogant; न (na) - not; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अभिजायते (abhijāyate) - is born; यवीयांसः (yavīyāṃsaḥ) - younger; अभिजायन्ते (abhijāyante) - are born; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; वृद्धोपसेवया (vṛddhopasevayā) - by serving the elders;]
(Thus, the elder, even if arrogant, does not inherit the kingdom; the younger inherit the kingdom by serving the elders.)

तथैव सर्वधर्मज्ञः पितुर्मम पितामहः । प्रतीपः पृथिवीपालस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥५-१४७-१४॥
tathaiva sarvadharmajñaḥ piturmama pitāmahaḥ । pratīpaḥ pṛthivīpālastriṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ ॥5-147-14॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सर्वधर्मज्ञः (sarvadharmajñaḥ) - knower of all duties; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; मम (mama) - my; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; प्रतीपः (pratīpaḥ) - Pratipa; पृथिवीपालः (pṛthivīpālaḥ) - king of the earth; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famous;]
(In the same way, my grandfather Pratipa, the knower of all duties, the king of the earth, was famous in the three worlds.)

तस्य पार्थिवसिंहस्य राज्यं धर्मेण शासतः । त्रयः प्रजज्ञिरे पुत्रा देवकल्पा यशस्विनः ॥५-१४७-१५॥
tasya pārthivasiṃhasya rājyaṃ dharmeṇa śāsataḥ । trayaḥ prajajñire putrā devakalpā yaśasvinaḥ ॥5-147-15॥

(His kingdom was ruled with righteousness by the lion among kings. Three god-like, glorious sons were born.)

देवापिरभवज्ज्येष्ठो बाह्लीकस्तदनन्तरम् । तृतीयः शन्तनुस्तात धृतिमान्मे पितामहः ॥५-१४७-१६॥
devāpirabhavajjyeṣṭho bāhlīkastadanantaram । tṛtīyaḥ śantanustāta dhṛtimānme pitāmahaḥ ॥5-147-16॥

(Devāpi became the eldest, then Bahlika; third was Shantanu, my steadfast grandfather, O father.)
Devāpi was the eldest, followed by Bahlika, and then Shantanu, who was my steadfast grandfather, O father.
देवापिस्तु महातेजास्त्वग्दोषी राजसत्तमः । धार्मिकः सत्यवादी च पितुः शुश्रूषणे रतः ॥५-१४७-१७॥
devāpistu mahātejāstvagdoṣī rājasattamaḥ । dhārmikaḥ satyavādī ca pituḥ śuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ ॥5-147-17॥

पौरजानपदानां च संमतः साधुसत्कृतः । सर्वेषां बालवृद्धानां देवापिर्हृदयङ्गमः ॥५-१४७-१८॥
paurajanapadānāṃ ca saṃmataḥ sādhusatkṛtaḥ । sarveṣāṃ bālavṛddhānāṃ devāpirhṛdayaṅgamaḥ ॥5-147-18॥

(Respected and honored by the virtuous among citizens and countrymen, Devapi is pleasing to the heart of all young and old.)

प्राज्ञश्च सत्यसन्धश्च सर्वभूतहिते रतः । वर्तमानः पितुः शास्त्रे ब्राह्मणानां तथैव च ॥५-१४७-१९॥
prājñaśca satyasandhaśca sarvabhūtahite rataḥ । vartamānaḥ pituḥ śāstre brāhmaṇānāṃ tathaiva ca ॥5-147-19॥
[प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; च (ca) - and; सत्यसन्धः (satyasandhaḥ) - truthful; च (ca) - and; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahite) - in the welfare of all beings; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - abiding; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; शास्त्रे (śāstre) - in the teachings; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṃ) - of the Brahmins; तथैव (tathaiva) - also; च (ca) - and;]
(Wise and truthful, engaged in the welfare of all beings, abiding in the father's teachings and also of the Brahmins.)
He is wise and truthful, dedicated to the welfare of all beings, and follows the teachings of his father and the Brahmins.
बाह्लीकस्य प्रियो भ्राता शन्तनोश्च महात्मनः । सौभ्रात्रं च परं तेषां सहितानां महात्मनाम् ॥५-१४७-२०॥
bāhlīkasya priyo bhrātā śantanośca mahātmanaḥ । saubhrātraṃ ca paraṃ teṣāṃ sahitānāṃ mahātmanām ॥5-147-20॥
[बाह्लीकस्य (bāhlīkasya) - of Bahlika; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great soul; सौभ्रात्रं (saubhrātraṃ) - brotherhood; च (ca) - and; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; सहितानां (sahitānāṃ) - together; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls;]
(Bahlika's dear brother Śantanu, the great soul, and their supreme brotherhood together with the great souls.)
Bahlika's beloved brother Śantanu, who was a great soul, shared a supreme brotherhood with those great souls.
अथ कालस्य पर्याये वृद्धो नृपतिसत्तमः । सम्भारानभिषेकार्थं कारयामास शास्त्रतः ॥ मङ्गलानि च सर्वाणि कारयामास चाभिभूः ॥५-१४७-२१॥
atha kālasya paryāye vṛddho nṛpatisattamaḥ । sambhārānabhiṣekārthaṃ kārayāmāsa śāstrataḥ ॥ maṅgalāni ca sarvāṇi kārayāmāsa cābhibhūḥ ॥5-147-21॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्याये (paryāye) - in the course; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; नृपतिसत्तमः (nṛpatisattamaḥ) - excellent king; सम्भारान् (sambhārān) - materials; अभिषेकार्थम् (abhiṣekārtham) - for the consecration; कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be done; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to scriptures; मङ्गलानि (maṅgalāni) - auspicious rites; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; चाभिभूः (cābhibhūḥ) - the conqueror;]
(Then, in the course of time, the aged excellent king caused the materials for the consecration to be prepared according to the scriptures. And the conqueror caused all auspicious rites to be performed.)
Then, as time passed, the wise and aged king arranged for the consecration materials to be prepared as per the scriptures. The conqueror also ensured that all auspicious ceremonies were conducted.
तं ब्राह्मणाश्च वृद्धाश्च पौरजानपदैः सह । सर्वे निवारयामासुर्देवापेरभिषेचनम् ॥५-१४७-२२॥
taṃ brāhmaṇāśca vṛddhāśca paurajanapadaiḥ saha । sarve nivārayāmāsurdevāperabhiṣecanam ॥5-147-22॥
