(Thus, having been spoken by Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura, and by Gandhari and Dhritarashtra, the dullard did not understand.)
Despite being addressed by Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, Gandhari, and Dhritarashtra, the dullard failed to comprehend.
अवधूयोत्थितः क्रुद्धो रोषात्संरक्तलोचनः । अन्वद्रवन्त तं पश्चाद्राजानस्त्यक्तजीविताः ॥५-१४८-२॥
avadhūyotthitaḥ kruddho roṣātsaṁraktalocanaḥ । anvadravanta taṁ paścādrājānastyaktajīvitāḥ ॥5-148-2॥
[अवधूय (avadhūya) - having shaken off; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - risen; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; संरक्तलोचनः (saṁraktalocanaḥ) - with bloodshot eyes; अन्वद्रवन्त (anvadravanta) - chased; तम् (tam) - him; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; त्यक्तजीविताः (tyaktajīvitāḥ) - having abandoned life;]
(Having shaken off, risen, angry, with bloodshot eyes from anger, the kings chased him after, having abandoned life.)
The kings, having abandoned their lives, rose in anger with bloodshot eyes and chased after him.
अज्ञापयच्च राज्ञस्तान्पार्थिवान्दुष्टचेतसः । प्रयाध्वं वै कुरुक्षेत्रं पुष्योऽद्येति पुनः पुनः ॥५-१४८-३॥

(He commanded those evil-minded princes of the king, 'Go to Kurukshetra today, on the day of Pushya,' again and again.)
The king instructed those malicious princes repeatedly to proceed to Kurukshetra on the day of Pushya, emphasizing the urgency of the task.
ततस्ते पृथिवीपालाः प्रययुः सहसैनिकाः । भीष्मं सेनापतिं कृत्वा संहृष्टाः कालचोदिताः ॥५-१४८-४॥
tataste pṛthivīpālāḥ prayayuḥ sahasainikāḥ । bhīṣmaṃ senāpatiṃ kṛtvā saṃhṛṣṭāḥ kālacoditāḥ ॥5-148-4॥

(Then the kings, with their armies, departed, having made Bhishma the commander, joyful and prompted by time.)
Then the kings, along with their armies, joyfully departed, having appointed Bhishma as the commander, driven by the call of time.
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च पार्थिवानां समागताः । तासां प्रमुखतो भीष्मस्तालकेतुर्व्यरोचत ॥ यदत्र युक्तं प्राप्तं च तद्विधत्स्व विशां पते ॥५-१४८-५॥

(Ten and one divisions of kings' armies assembled. At the forefront, Bhishma with a palm tree banner shone. What is appropriate and obtained here, do that, O lord of the people.)
Eleven divisions of kings' armies gathered, with Bhishma, bearing a palm tree banner, shining at the forefront. O lord of the people, act according to what is appropriate and has been obtained here.
उक्तं भीष्मेण यद्वाक्यं द्रोणेन विदुरेण च । गान्धार्या धृतराष्ट्रेण समक्षं मम भारत ॥ एतत्ते कथितं राजन्यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१४८-६॥

(Spoken by Bhishma, the words by Drona and Vidura, by Gandhari and Dhritarashtra in my presence, O Bharata. This has been told to you, O King, what happened in the Kuru assembly.)
O Bharata, the words spoken by Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, Gandhari, and Dhritarashtra in my presence have been narrated to you, O King, regarding what transpired in the Kuru assembly.
साम आदौ प्रयुक्तं मे राजन्सौभ्रात्रमिच्छता । अभेदात्कुरुवंशस्य प्रजानां च विवृद्धये ॥५-१४८-७॥
sāma ādau prayuktaṃ me rājansaubhrātramicchatā । abhedātkuruvaṃśasya prajānāṃ ca vivṛddhaye ॥5-148-7॥

(Conciliation was employed by me in the beginning, O king, desiring friendship, for the unity of the Kuru dynasty and for the prosperity of the people.)

पुनर्भेदश्च मे युक्तो यदा साम न गृह्यते । कर्मानुकीर्तनं चैव देवमानुषसंहितम् ॥५-१४८-८॥
punarbhedaśca me yukto yadā sāma na gṛhyate । karmānukīrtanaṃ caiva devamānuṣasaṃhitam ॥5-148-8॥

यदा नाद्रियते वाक्यं सामपूर्वं सुयोधनः । तदा मया समानीय भेदिताः सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥५-१४८-९॥
yadā nādriyate vākyaṃ sāmapūrvaṃ suyodhanaḥ । tadā mayā samānīya bheditāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ॥5-148-9॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; न (na) - not; आद्रियते (ādriyate) - is respected; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; सामपूर्वं (sāmapūrvaṃ) - preceded by conciliation; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; मया (mayā) - by me; समानीय (samānīya) - having gathered; भेदिताः (bheditāḥ) - were divided; सर्वपार्थिवाः (sarvapārthivāḥ) - all the kings;]
(When the speech preceded by conciliation is not respected by Suyodhana, then having gathered, all the kings were divided by me.)
When Suyodhana does not respect the speech that is preceded by conciliation, I gather and divide all the kings.
अद्भुतानि च घोराणि दारुणानि च भारत । अमानुषाणि कर्माणि दर्शितानि च मे विभो ॥५-१४८-१०॥
adbhutāni ca ghorāṇi dāruṇāni ca bhārata । amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi darśitāni ca me vibho ॥5-148-10॥
[अद्भुतानि (adbhutāni) - wondrous; च (ca) - and; घोराणि (ghorāṇi) - terrible; दारुणानि (dāruṇāni) - frightful; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अमानुषाणि (amānuṣāṇi) - inhuman; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; दर्शितानि (darśitāni) - shown; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Wondrous and terrible, frightful and inhuman deeds have been shown to me, O Bhārata, O lord.)

भर्त्सयित्वा तु राज्ञस्तांस्तृणीकृत्य सुयोधनम् । राधेयं भीषयित्वा च सौबलं च पुनः पुनः ॥५-१४८-११॥
bhartsayitvā tu rājñastāṃstṛṇīkṛtya suyodhanam । rādheyaṃ bhīṣayitvā ca saubalaṃ ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-148-11॥
[भर्त्सयित्वा (bhartsayitvā) - having rebuked; तु (tu) - but; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; ताम् (tām) - them; तृणीकृत्य (tṛṇīkṛtya) - having disregarded; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana; राधेयं (rādheyam) - Radheya; भीषयित्वा (bhīṣayitvā) - having frightened; च (ca) - and; सौबलम् (saubalam) - Saubala; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]

न्यूनतां धार्तराष्ट्राणां निन्दां चैव पुनः पुनः । भेदयित्वा नृपान्सर्वान्वाग्भिर्मन्त्रेण चासकृत् ॥५-१४८-१२॥
nyūnatāṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ nindāṃ caiva punaḥ punaḥ । bhedayitvā nṛpānsarvānvāgbhirmantreṇa cāsakṛt ॥5-148-12॥

पुनः सामाभिसंयुक्तं सम्प्रदानमथाब्रुवम् । अभेदात्कुरुवंशस्य कार्ययोगात्तथैव च ॥५-१४८-१३॥

ते बाला धृतराष्ट्रस्य भीष्मस्य विदुरस्य च । तिष्ठेयुः पाण्डवाः सर्वे हित्वा मानमधश्चराः ॥५-१४८-१४॥
te bālā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya bhīṣmasya vidurasya ca । tiṣṭheyuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve hitvā mānamadhaścarāḥ ॥5-148-14॥

(They, the young ones of Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, and Vidura, would stand, all the Pandavas, abandoning pride, moving below.)
The young sons of Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, and Vidura would stand together, with all the Pandavas, having abandoned their pride and moving humbly.
प्रयच्छन्तु च ते राज्यमनीशास्ते भवन्तु च । यथाह राजा गाङ्गेयो विदुरश्च तथास्तु तत् ॥५-१४८-१५॥
prayacchantu ca te rājyamanīśāste bhavantu ca । yathāha rājā gāṅgeyo viduraśca tathāstu tat ॥5-148-15॥

(May they grant the kingdom and may they become powerless. As the king, the son of Ganga, and Vidura said, so let it be that.)

सर्वं भवतु ते राज्यं पञ्च ग्रामान्विसर्जय । अवश्यं भरणीया हि पितुस्ते राजसत्तम ॥५-१४८-१६॥
sarvaṁ bhavatu te rājyaṁ pañca grāmānvisarjaya । avaśyaṁ bharaṇīyā hi pituste rājasattama ॥5-148-16॥

एवमुक्तस्तु दुष्टात्मा नैव भावं व्यमुञ्चत । दण्डं चतुर्थं पश्यामि तेषु पापेषु नान्यथा ॥५-१४८-१७॥
evamuktastu duṣṭātmā naiva bhāvaṃ vyamuñcata . daṇḍaṃ caturthaṃ paśyāmi teṣu pāpeṣu nānyathā ॥5-148-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked soul; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; भावं (bhāvaṃ) - emotion; व्यमुञ्चत (vyamuñcata) - released; दण्डं (daṇḍaṃ) - punishment; चतुर्थं (caturthaṃ) - fourth; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; पापेषु (pāpeṣu) - sinners; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Thus spoken, the wicked soul did not release emotion. I see the fourth punishment in those sinners, not otherwise.)
Thus addressed, the wicked soul did not change his mind. I see the fourth punishment as the only option for those sinners.
निर्याताश्च विनाशाय कुरुक्षेत्रं नराधिपाः । एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१४८-१८॥
niryātāśca vināśāya kurukṣetraṃ narādhipāḥ । etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ yadvṛttaṃ kurusaṃsadi ॥5-148-18॥
[निर्याताः (niryātāḥ) - departed; च (ca) - and; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetraṃ) - Kurukshetra; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितं (kathitaṃ) - told; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; यद्वृत्तं (yadvṛttaṃ) - what happened; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
(The kings departed to Kurukshetra for destruction. This has all been told to you, what happened in the Kuru assembly.)
The kings have gone to Kurukshetra for their destruction. This is what has been narrated to you, all that transpired in the Kuru assembly.
न ते राज्यं प्रयच्छन्ति विना युद्धेन पाण्डव । विनाशहेतवः सर्वे प्रत्युपस्थितमृत्यवः ॥५-१४८-१९॥
na te rājyaṃ prayacchanti vinā yuddhena pāṇḍava । vināśahetavaḥ sarve pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ ॥5-148-19॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; विना (vinā) - without; युद्धेन (yuddhena) - war; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - Pāṇḍava; विनाशहेतवः (vināśahetavaḥ) - causes of destruction; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रत्युपस्थितमृत्यवः (pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ) - approaching death;]
(They do not give the kingdom without war, O Pāṇḍava. All are causes of destruction, approaching death.)
O Pāṇḍava, they will not grant you the kingdom without a fight. All are destined for destruction and are facing imminent death.
