bhīṣmeṇokte tato droṇo duryodhanamabhāṣata । madhye nṛpāṇāṃ bhadraṃ te vacanaṃ vacanakṣamaḥ ॥5-146-1॥
[भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - to Duryodhana; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; नृपाणाम् (nṛpāṇām) - of kings; भद्रम् (bhadram) - well; ते (te) - to you; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; वचनक्षमः (vacanakṣamaḥ) - capable of speech;]
(By Bhishma having been spoken, then Drona spoke to Duryodhana in the midst of kings, "Well to you, capable of speech.")
After Bhishma had spoken, Drona addressed Duryodhana among the kings, saying, "May you be well, capable of speech."
प्रातीपः शन्तनुस्तात कुलस्यार्थे यथोत्थितः । तथा देवव्रतो भीष्मः कुलस्यार्थे स्थितोऽभवत् ॥५-१४६-२॥

(Pratipa, Śantanu's father, arose for the sake of the family. Similarly, Devavrata Bhishma stood for the sake of the family.)

(Then Pandu, the king, truthful and self-controlled, the righteous king of the Kurus, of good vows, well-composed.)

ज्येष्ठाय राज्यमददाद्धृतराष्ट्राय धीमते । यवीयसस्तथा क्षत्तुः कुरुवंशविवर्धनः ॥५-१४६-४॥

ततः सिंहासने राजन्स्थापयित्वैनमच्युतम् । वनं जगाम कौरव्यो भार्याभ्यां सहितोऽनघ ॥५-१४६-५॥
tataḥ siṃhāsane rājansthāpayitvainamacyutam । vanaṃ jagāma kauravyo bhāryābhyāṃ sahito'nagha ॥5-146-5॥

(Having remained low, Vidura indeed serves humbly, like a servant, waving a fan, the tiger among men.)

ततः सर्वाः प्रजास्तात धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् । अन्वपद्यन्त विधिवद्यथा पाण्डुं नराधिपम् ॥५-१४६-७॥
tataḥ sarvāḥ prajās tāta dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janeśvaram । anvapadyanta vidhivad yathā pāṇḍuṃ narādhipam ॥5-146-7॥

(Then all the subjects, O dear, followed Dhritarashtra, the king, according to rule, as they did Pandu, the king.)

विसृज्य धृतराष्ट्राय राज्यं स विदुराय च । चचार पृथिवीं पाण्डुः सर्वां परपुरञ्जयः ॥५-१४६-८॥
visṛjya dhṛtarāṣṭrāya rājyaṃ sa vidurāya ca । cacāra pṛthivīṃ pāṇḍuḥ sarvāṃ parapurañjayaḥ ॥5-146-8॥

(Having relinquished the kingdom to Dhritarashtra and Vidura, Pandu, the conqueror of enemy cities, wandered the entire earth.)
Pandu, after giving up the kingdom to Dhritarashtra and Vidura, roamed the whole earth as the conqueror of enemy cities.
कोशसञ्जनने दाने भृत्यानां चान्ववेक्षणे । भरणे चैव सर्वस्य विदुरः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥५-१४६-९॥
kośasañjanane dāne bhṛtyānāṃ cānvavekṣaṇe । bharaṇe caiva sarvasya viduraḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ॥5-146-9॥
[कोशसञ्जनने (kośasañjanane) - in treasury management; दाने (dāne) - in giving; भृत्यानां (bhṛtyānāṃ) - of servants; च (ca) - and; अन्ववेक्षणे (anvavekṣaṇe) - in supervision; भरणे (bharaṇe) - in maintenance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - truthful in battle;]
(In treasury management, in giving, of servants and in supervision, in maintenance and indeed of all, Vidura is truthful in battle.)
Vidura is known for his truthfulness in battle, his skills in managing the treasury, giving, supervising servants, and maintaining everything.
सन्धिविग्रहसंयुक्तो राज्ञः संवाहनक्रियाः । अवैक्षत महातेजा भीष्मः परपुरञ्जयः ॥५-१४६-१०॥
sandhivigrahasaṃyukto rājñaḥ saṃvāhanakriyāḥ । avaikṣata mahātejā bhīṣmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ॥5-146-10॥
[सन्धिविग्रहसंयुक्तः (sandhivigrahasaṃyuktaḥ) - engaged in diplomacy and war; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; संवाहनक्रियाः (saṃvāhanakriyāḥ) - acts of service; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - observed; महातेजा (mahātejā) - the great radiant one; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Engaged in diplomacy and war, acts of service of the king were observed by the great radiant one, Bhishma, the conqueror of enemy cities.)

सिंहासनस्थो नृपतिर्धृतराष्ट्रो महाबलः । अन्वास्यमानः सततं विदुरेण महात्मना ॥५-१४६-११॥

kathaṁ tasya kule jātaḥ kulabhedaṁ vyavasyasi । sambhūya bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ bhuṅkṣva bhogāñjanādhipa ॥5-146-12॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; तस्य (tasya) - his; कुले (kule) - in family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; कुलभेदं (kulabhedaṁ) - family division; व्यवस्यसि (vyavasyasi) - you decide; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - together; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - along with; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; भोगान् (bhogān) - pleasures; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people;]

ब्रवीम्यहं न कार्पण्यान्नार्थहेतोः कथञ्चन । भीष्मेण दत्तमश्नामि न त्वया राजसत्तम ॥५-१४६-१३॥
bravīmyahaṃ na kārpaṇyānnārthahetoḥ kathaṃcana । bhīṣmeṇa dattamaśnāmi na tvayā rājasattama ॥5-146-13॥
[ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; कार्पण्यात् (kārpaṇyāt) - out of miserliness; न (na) - not; अर्थहेतोः (arthahetoḥ) - for the sake of wealth; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; अश्नामि (aśnāmi) - I eat; न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings;]
(I say, not out of miserliness, nor for the sake of wealth, in any way. I eat what is given by Bhishma, not by you, O best of kings.)

नाहं त्वत्तोऽभिकाङ्क्षिष्ये वृत्त्युपायं जनाधिप । यतो भीष्मस्ततो द्रोणो यद्भीष्मस्त्वाह तत्कुरु ॥५-१४६-१४॥
nāhaṃ tvatto'bhikāṅkṣiṣye vṛttyupāyaṃ janādhipa । yato bhīṣmastato droṇo yadbhīṣmastvāha tatkuru ॥5-146-14॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; अभिकाङ्क्षिष्ये (abhikāṅkṣiṣye) - will desire; वृत्ति-उपायम् (vṛtti-upāyam) - means of livelihood; जन-अधिप (jana-adhipa) - O ruler of men; यतः (yataḥ) - where; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; ततः (tataḥ) - there; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; यत् (yat) - what; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; त्वा (tvā) - to you; आह (āha) - said; तत् (tat) - that; कुरु (kuru) - do.;]
(I will not desire from you the means of livelihood, O ruler of men. Where Bhishma is, there is Drona. What Bhishma said to you, do that.)

दीयतां पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यो राज्यार्धमरिकर्शन । सममाचार्यकं तात तव तेषां च मे सदा ॥५-१४६-१५॥
dīyatāṃ pāṇḍuputrebhyo rājyārdhamarikarśana । samamācāryakaṃ tāta tava teṣāṃ ca me sadā ॥5-146-15॥
[दीयतां (dīyatāṃ) - let it be given; पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यः (pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ) - to the sons of Pandu; राज्य-अर्धम् (rājya-ardham) - half of the kingdom; अरि-कर्तन (ari-karśana) - O slayer of foes; समम् (samam) - equally; आचार्यकम् (ācāryakam) - with the guidance of the teacher; तात (tāta) - dear father; तव (tava) - your; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Let half of the kingdom be given to the sons of Pandu, O slayer of foes, equally with the guidance of the teacher, dear father, your and their and my always.)

अश्वत्थामा यथा मह्यं तथा श्वेतहयो मम । बहुना किं प्रलापेन यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥५-१४६-१६॥

[अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Ashwatthama; यथा (yathā) - as; मह्यं (mahyaṃ) - to me; तथा (tathā) - so; श्वेतहयः (śvetahayaḥ) - Shvetahaya; मम (mama) - my; बहुना (bahunā) - much; किम् (kim) - what; प्रलापेन (pralāpena) - by prattle; यतः (yataḥ) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; ततः (tataḥ) - there; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Ashwatthama is to me as Shvetahaya is to my much; what by prattle, where dharma, there victory.)
Ashwatthama is as important to me as Shvetahaya is. Why indulge in much prattle? Where there is dharma, there is victory.
एवमुक्ते महाराज द्रोणेनामिततेजसा । व्याजहार ततो वाक्यं विदुरः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥ पितुर्वदनमन्वीक्ष्य परिवृत्य च धर्मवित् ॥५-१४६-१७॥
evamukte mahārāja droṇenāmitatejasā । vyājahāra tato vākyaṃ viduraḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ॥ piturvadanamanvīkṣya parivṛtya ca dharmavit ॥5-146-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable splendor; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - spoke; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - true to his vow; पितुः (pituḥ) - of his father; वदनम् (vadanam) - face; अन्वीक्ष्य (anvīkṣya) - having seen; परिवृत्य (parivṛtya) - having turned around; च (ca) - and; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma;]
(Thus having been spoken by Droṇa of immeasurable splendor, O great king, Vidura, true to his vow, then spoke these words, having seen his father's face and having turned around, the knower of dharma.)

देवव्रत निबोधेदं वचनं मम भाषतः । प्रनष्टः कौरवो वंशस्त्वयायं पुनरुद्धृतः ॥५-१४६-१८॥

(Devavrata, understand this word of mine speaking: The Kaurava dynasty, destroyed, by you this again restored.)

तन्मे विलपमानस्य वचनं समुपेक्षसे । कोऽयं दुर्योधनो नाम कुलेऽस्मिन्कुलपांसनः ॥५-१४६-१९॥

यस्य लोभाभिभूतस्य मतिं समनुवर्तसे । अनार्यस्याकृतज्ञस्य लोभोपहतचेतसः ॥ अतिक्रामति यः शास्त्रं पितुर्धर्मार्थदर्शिनः ॥५-१४६-२०॥
yasya lobhābhibhūtasya matiṁ samanuvartase । anāryasyākṛtajñasya lobhopahatacetasaḥ ॥ atikrāmati yaḥ śāstraṁ piturdharmārthadarśinaḥ ॥5-146-20॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; लोभाभिभूतस्य (lobhābhibhūtasya) - overcome by greed; मतिं (matiṁ) - mind; समनुवर्तसे (samanuvartase) - you follow; अनार्यस्य (anāryasya) - of the ignoble; अकृतज्ञस्य (akṛtajñasya) - ungrateful; लोभोपहतचेतसः (lobhopahatacetasaḥ) - whose mind is corrupted by greed; अतिक्रामति (atikrāmati) - transgresses; यः (yaḥ) - who; शास्त्रं (śāstraṁ) - scripture; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; धर्मार्थदर्शिनः (dharmārthadarśinaḥ) - who sees righteousness and purpose;]
(Whose mind, overcome by greed, you follow; of the ignoble, ungrateful, whose mind is corrupted by greed. Who transgresses the scripture of the father who sees righteousness and purpose.)

(Whatever the chief of the Kurus, the great soul Devavrata, who is truthful and wise, speaks, all that should be accepted by us without exception as duty, by those who uphold their own duty.)
