āpageyaṃ mahātmānaṃ bhīṣmaṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ varam। pitāmahaṃ bhāratānāṃ dhvajaṃ sarvamahīkṣitām ॥5-154-1॥

tato drupadamānāyya virāṭaṃ śinipuṅgavam। dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ ca pāñcālyaṃ dhṛṣṭaketuṃ ca pārthivam ॥ śikhaṇḍinaṃ ca pāñcālyaṃ sahadevaṃ ca māgadham ॥5-154-10॥

तं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजश्च केशवश्च महाद्युतिः। उदतिष्ठत्तदा पार्थो भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥५-१५४-१९॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājaśca keśavaśca mahādyutiḥ। udatiṣṭhattadā pārtho bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ ॥5-154-19॥

asmādyuddhātsamuttīrṇānapi vaḥ sasuhṛjjanān। arogānakṣatairdehaiḥ paśyeyamiti me matiḥ ॥5-154-25॥

(From this battle, even you with friends, unharmed and with intact bodies, I may see thus is my thought.)

समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं कालपक्वमसंशयम्। विमर्दः सुमहान्भावी मांसशोणितकर्दमः ॥५-१५४-२६॥
sametaṃ pārthivaṃ kṣatraṃ kālapakvamasanśayam। vimardaḥ sumahānbhāvī māṃsaśoṇitakardamaḥ ॥5-154-26॥
[समेतं (sametaṃ) - together; पार्थिवं (pārthivaṃ) - earthly; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - warrior class; कालपक्वम् (kālapakvam) - ripened by time; असंशयम् (asanśayam) - undoubtedly; विमर्दः (vimardaḥ) - conflict; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; भावी (bhāvī) - will be; मांसशोणितकर्दमः (māṃsaśoṇitakardamaḥ) - mud of flesh and blood;]
(Together, the earthly warrior class, ripened by time, undoubtedly, a very great conflict will be, mud of flesh and blood.)
A great conflict involving the earthly warrior class, matured over time, is inevitable, resulting in a mire of flesh and blood.
उक्तो मया वासुदेवः पुनः पुनरुपह्वरे। सम्बन्धिषु समां वृत्तिं वर्तस्व मधुसूदन ॥५-१५४-२७॥

(Vasudeva has been spoken by me again and again in the assembly. Maintain equal conduct among relatives, O Madhusudana.)

पाण्डवा हि यथास्माकं तथा दुर्योधनो नृपः। तस्यापि क्रियतां युक्त्या सपर्येति पुनः पुनः ॥५-१५४-२८॥
pāṇḍavā hi yathāsmākaṃ tathā duryodhano nṛpaḥ। tasyāpi kriyatāṃ yuktyā saparyeti punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-154-28॥

(The Pandavas indeed, as our king Duryodhana, his honor should be done with strategy again and again.)

तच्च मे नाकरोद्वाक्यं त्वदर्थे मधुसूदनः। निविष्टः सर्वभावेन धनञ्जयमवेक्ष्य च ॥५-१५४-२९॥
tacca me nākarodvākyaṃ tvadarthe madhusūdanaḥ। niviṣṭaḥ sarvabhāvena dhanañjayamavekṣya ca ॥5-154-29॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; त्वदर्थे (tvadarthe) - for you; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; निविष्टः (niviṣṭaḥ) - situated; सर्वभावेन (sarvabhāvena) - with all emotions; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having seen; च (ca) - and;]
(And that Madhusudana did not make my speech for you, being situated with all emotions, having seen Dhananjaya.)
Madhusudana, being fully aware and composed, did not convey my message to you after observing Dhananjaya.
ध्रुवो जयः पाण्डवानामिति मे निश्चिता मतिः। तथा ह्यभिनिवेशोऽयं वासुदेवस्य भारत ॥५-१५४-३०॥
dhruvo jayaḥ pāṇḍavānām iti me niścitā matiḥ। tathā hy abhiniveśo'yaṃ vāsudevasya bhārata ॥5-154-30॥
[ध्रुवः (dhruvaḥ) - certain; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - determined; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; तथा (tathā) - so; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिनिवेशः (abhiniveśaḥ) - conviction; अयम् (ayam) - this; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vasudeva; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Certain is the victory of the Pandavas, thus is my determined opinion. So indeed is this conviction of Vasudeva, O Bharata.)

न चाहमुत्सहे कृष्णमृते लोकमुदीक्षितुम्। ततोऽहमनुवर्तामि केशवस्य चिकीर्षितम् ॥५-१५४-३१॥
na cāham utsahe kṛṣṇamṛte lokam udīkṣitum। tato'ham anuvartāmi keśavasya cikīrṣitam ॥5-154-31॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; कृष्णमृते (kṛṣṇamṛte) - without Krishna; लोकम् (lokam) - world; उदीक्षितुम् (udīkṣitum) - to behold; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुवर्तामि (anuvartāmi) - follow; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keshava; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - wish;]
(And I am not able to behold the world without Krishna. Therefore, I follow the wish of Keshava.)
I cannot bear to see the world without Krishna. Hence, I follow Keshava's desire.
उभौ शिष्यौ हि मे वीरौ गदायुद्धविशारदौ। तुल्यस्नेहोऽस्म्यतो भीमे तथा दुर्योधने नृपे ॥५-१५४-३२॥
ubhau śiṣyau hi me vīrau gadāyuddhaviśāradau। tulyasneho'smyato bhīme tathā duryodhane nṛpe ॥5-154-32॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; शिष्यौ (śiṣyau) - disciples; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; गदायुद्धविशारदौ (gadāyuddhaviśāradau) - skilled in mace fighting; तुल्यस्नेहः (tulyasnehaḥ) - equal affection; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; भीमे (bhīme) - in Bhima; तथा (tathā) - and; दुर्योधने (duryodhane) - in Duryodhana; नृपे (nṛpe) - king;]
(Both my disciples are indeed heroes skilled in mace fighting. I have equal affection therefore in Bhima and in King Duryodhana.)

tasmādyāsyāmi tīrthāni sarasvatyā niṣevitum। na hi śakṣyāmi kauravyānnaśyamānānupekṣitum ॥5-154-33॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I will go; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - to the sacred places; सरस्वत्या (sarasvatyā) - of Sarasvati; निषेवितुम् (niṣevitum) - to visit; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I am able; कौरव्यान् (kauravyān) - the Kauravas; नश्यमानान् (naśyamānān) - perishing; उपेक्षितुम् (upekṣitum) - to overlook;]
(Therefore, I will go to the sacred places of Sarasvati to visit. Indeed, I am not able to overlook the perishing Kauravas.)

एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुरनुज्ञातश्च पाण्डवैः। तीर्थयात्रां ययौ रामो निवर्त्य मधुसूदनम् ॥५-१५४-३४॥
evamuktvā mahābāhuranujñātaśca pāṇḍavaiḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ yayau rāmo nivartya madhusūdanam ॥5-154-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; ययौ (yayau) - went; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; निवर्त्य (nivartya) - having sent back; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana;]
(Thus having spoken, the mighty-armed Rama, permitted by the Pandavas, went on a pilgrimage, having sent back Madhusudana.)
After speaking thus, the mighty-armed Rama, with the permission of the Pandavas, embarked on a pilgrimage after sending back Madhusudana.
