सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
उलूकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। सेनां निर्यापयामास धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाम् ॥५-१६१-१॥
Upon hearing Uluka's words, Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, sent forth the army with Dhrishtadyumna at the forefront.
पदातिनीं नागवतीं रथिनीमश्ववृन्दिनीम्। चतुर्विधबलां भीमामकम्प्यां पृथिवीमिव ॥५-१६१-२॥
The army, formidable and steadfast, was like the earth itself, composed of infantry, elephants, chariots, and cavalry.
भीमसेनादिभिर्गुप्तां सार्जुनैश्च महारथैः। धृष्टद्युम्नवशां दुर्गां सागरस्तिमितोपमाम् ॥५-१६१-३॥
The fort, guarded by Bhimasena, Arjuna, and other great warriors, and under Dhrishtadyumna's command, was as calm as a still ocean.
तस्यास्त्वग्रे महेष्वासः पाञ्चाल्यो युद्धदुर्मदः। द्रोणप्रेप्सुरनीकानि धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रकर्षति ॥५-१६१-४॥
In front of her stood Dhrishtadyumna, the great archer and son of Panchala, proud and eager to confront Drona, leading the armies.
यथाबलं यथोत्साहं रथिनः समुपादिशत्। अर्जुनं सूतपुत्राय भीमं दुर्योधनाय च ॥५-१६१-५॥
The charioteers, considering their strength and enthusiasm, assigned Arjuna to Karna, the son of the charioteer, and Bhima to Duryodhana.
अश्वत्थाम्ने च नकुलं शैब्यं च कृतवर्मणे। सैन्धवाय च वार्ष्णेयं युयुधानमुपादिशत् ॥५-१६१-६॥
He gave instructions to Ashwatthama, Nakul, Shaibya, Kritavarma, Saindhava, Vrishni, and Yuyudhana.
शिखण्डिनं च भीष्माय प्रमुखे समकल्पयत्। सहदेवं शकुनये चेकितानं शलाय च ॥५-१६१-७॥
Shikhandin and Sahadeva were positioned in front of Bhishma, while Cekitana was aligned with Shakuni and Shalya.
धृष्टकेतुं च शल्याय गौतमायोत्तमौजसम्। द्रौपदेयांश्च पञ्चभ्यस्त्रिगर्तेभ्यः समादिशत् ॥५-१६१-८॥
He instructed Dhṛṣṭaketu, Śalya, Gautama, Uttamaujas, the sons of Draupadī, the five warriors, and the Trigartas.
वृषसेनाय सौभद्रं शेषाणां च महीक्षिताम्। समर्थं तं हि मेने वै पार्थादभ्यधिकं रणे ॥५-१६१-९॥
He considered Vṛṣasena, Abhimanyu, and the other kings to be capable and indeed superior to Arjuna in battle.
एवं विभज्य योधांस्तान्पृथक्च सह चैव ह। ज्वालावर्णो महेष्वासो द्रोणमंशमकल्पयत् ॥५-१६१-१०॥
Thus, the flame-colored great archer arranged the warriors, dividing them separately and together, as part of Drona's strategy.
धृष्टद्युम्नो महेष्वासः सेनापतिपतिस्ततः। विधिवद्व्यूह्य मेधावी युद्धाय धृतमानसः ॥५-१६१-११॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great archer and commander of the army, then wisely arranged the troops with a firm mind for battle.
यथादिष्टान्यनीकानि पाण्डवानामयोजयत्। जयाय पाण्डुपुत्राणां यत्तस्तस्थौ रणाजिरे ॥५-१६१-१२॥
The troops of the Pandavas were arranged as commanded, and he stood ready in the battlefield for the victory of the sons of Pandu.
