Pancharatra-core: Bhishma describes five sons of Pandavas, Drupada, Virata and other warriors on the Pandava side.
भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhishma said:
द्रौपदेया महाराज सर्वे पञ्च महारथाः । वैराटिरुत्तरश्चैव रथो मम महान्मतः ॥५-१६७-१॥
O great king, the sons of Draupadi, all five are great warriors, and the son of Virata, Uttara, is indeed considered a great chariot-warrior by me.
अभिमन्युर्महाराज रथयूथपयूथपः। समः पार्थेन समरे वासुदेवेन वा भवेत् ॥५-१६७-२॥
Abhimanyu, the great king and leader of chariot warriors, could be considered equal to Arjuna or Krishna in battle.
लघ्वस्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च मनस्वी दृढविक्रमः। संस्मरन्वै परिक्लेशं स्वपितुर्विक्रमिष्यति ॥५-१६७-३॥
He, being a light-armed and remarkable warrior with a strong spirit and firm courage, will indeed remember the suffering of his father and act with bravery.
सात्यकिर्माधवः शूरो रथयूथपयूथपः। एष वृष्णिप्रवीराणाममर्षी जितसाध्वसः ॥५-१६७-४॥
Satyaki and Madhava, the brave leaders of the chariot divisions, are known for their intolerance and fearlessness among the Vrishni heroes.
उत्तमौजास्तथा राजन्रथो मम महान्मतः। युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्तो रथोदारो नरर्षभः ॥५-१६७-५॥
Uttamaujas and Yudhāmanyu, both valiant warriors, are considered great charioteers, O king, and are like bulls among men.
एतेषां बहुसाहस्रा रथा नागा हयास्तथा। योत्स्यन्ते ते तनुं त्यक्त्वा कुन्तीपुत्रप्रियेप्सया ॥५-१६७-६॥
Many thousands of chariots, elephants, and horses will engage in battle, sacrificing their lives to please Kunti's son.
पाण्डवैः सह राजेन्द्र तव सेनासु भारत। अग्निमारुतवद्राजन्नाह्वयन्तः परस्परम् ॥५-१६७-७॥
O King, together with the Pandavas, your armies, O Bharata, were challenging each other like fire and wind.
अजेयौ समरे वृद्धौ विराटद्रुपदावुभौ। महारथौ महावीर्यौ मतौ मे पुरुषर्षभौ ॥५-१६७-८॥
Virata and Drupada, though aged, are invincible in battle and are considered by me as great charioteers and mighty warriors, the best among men.
वयोवृद्धावपि तु तौ क्षत्रधर्मपरायणौ। यतिष्येते परं शक्त्या स्थितौ वीरगते पथि ॥५-१६७-९॥
Despite their age, those two remain committed to their warrior duties, striving with all their might, standing firm on the path of heroes.
सम्बन्धकेन राजेन्द्र तौ तु वीर्यबलान्वयात्। आर्यवृत्तौ महेष्वासौ स्नेहपाशसितावुभौ ॥५-१६७-१०॥
O King, those two are related by lineage and strength, noble in conduct, and great archers, both bound by ties of affection.
कारणं प्राप्य तु नराः सर्व एव महाभुजाः। शूरा वा कातरा वापि भवन्ति नरपुङ्गव ॥५-१६७-११॥
O best of men, upon obtaining a cause, all men, whether mighty-armed, become either heroes or cowards.
एकायनगतावेतौ पार्थेन दृढभक्तिकौ। त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्परं शक्त्या घटितारौ नराधिप ॥५-१६७-१२॥
O King, these two, firmly devoted in the path of unity, were guided by the son of Pritha. Having abandoned their lives with supreme strength, they accomplished their mission.
पृथगक्षौहिणीभ्यां तावुभौ संयति दारुणौ। सम्बन्धिभावं रक्षन्तौ महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥५-१६७-१३॥
The two fierce warriors, each leading their own army, will engage in a great battle while maintaining their alliance.
लोकवीरौ महेष्वासौ त्यक्तात्मानौ च भारत। प्रत्ययं परिरक्षन्तौ महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥५-१६७-१४॥
O Bharata, the heroes of the world and great archers, having sacrificed themselves, will protect the trust and perform a great deed.
