ततोऽहं समनुज्ञाप्य कालीं सत्यवतीं तदा। मन्त्रिणश्च द्विजांश्चैव तथैव च पुरोहितान् ॥ समनुज्ञासिषं कन्यां ज्येष्ठामम्बां नराधिप ॥५-१७२-१॥
tato'haṁ samanujñāpya kālīṁ satyavatīṁ tadā। mantriṇaśca dvijāṁścaiva tathaiva ca purohitān ॥ samanujñāsiṣaṁ kanyāṁ jyeṣṭhāmambāṁ narādhipa ॥5-172-1॥

(Then I, having taken leave of Kali and Satyavati, then of the ministers, brahmins, and priests, took leave of the eldest maiden Amba, O king.)

अनुज्ञाता ययौ सा तु कन्या शाल्वपतेः पुरम्। वृद्धैर्द्विजातिभिर्गुप्ता धात्र्या चानुगता तदा ॥ अतीत्य च तमध्वानमाससाद नराधिपम् ॥५-१७२-२॥
anujñātā yayau sā tu kanyā śālvapateḥ puram। vṛddhairdvijātibhirguptā dhātryā cānugatā tadā ॥ atītya ca tamadhvānamāsasāda narādhipam ॥5-172-2॥
[अनुज्ञाता (anujñātā) - permitted; ययौ (yayau) - went; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; शाल्वपतेः (śālvapateḥ) - of the lord of Śālva; पुरम् (puram) - to the city; वृद्धैः (vṛddhaiḥ) - by the elders; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born; गुप्ता (guptā) - protected; धात्र्या (dhātryā) - by the nurse; च (ca) - and; अनुगता (anugatā) - accompanied; तदा (tadā) - then; अतीत्य (atītya) - having crossed; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; अध्वानम् (adhvānam) - path; आससाद (āsasāda) - reached; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king;]
(Permitted, she went, but the maiden to the city of the lord of Śālva, protected by the elders, by the twice-born, accompanied by the nurse then. Having crossed that path, she reached the king.)

सा तमासाद्य राजानं शाल्वं वचनमब्रवीत्। आगताहं महाबाहो त्वामुद्दिश्य महाद्युते ॥५-१७२-३॥
sā tam āsādya rājānaṃ śālvaṃ vacanam abravīt। āgatāhaṃ mahābāho tvām uddiśya mahādyute ॥5-172-3॥

(She, having approached King Śālva, said words: "I have arrived, O mighty-armed one, for the sake of you, O great effulgent one.")

तामब्रवीच्छाल्वपतिः स्मयन्निव विशां पते। त्वयान्यपूर्वया नाहं भार्यार्थी वरवर्णिनि ॥५-१७२-४॥
tām abravīt śālvapatiḥ smayan niva viśāṃ pate। tvayānyapūrvayā nāhaṃ bhāryārthī varavarṇini ॥5-172-4॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; शाल्वपतिः (śālvapatiḥ) - the lord of Śālva; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अन्यपूर्वया (anyapūrvayā) - unprecedented; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; भार्यार्थी (bhāryārthī) - in want of a wife; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O beautiful one;]
(The lord of Śālva said to her, smiling as if, "O lord of men, I am not in want of a wife by you, O beautiful one, unprecedented.")
The lord of Śālva, with a smile, said to her, "O lord of men, I do not seek a wife through you, O beautiful lady, who is unlike any other."
गच्छ भद्रे पुनस्तत्र सकाशं भारतस्य वै। नाहमिच्छामि भीष्मेण गृहीतां त्वां प्रसह्य वै ॥५-१७२-५॥
gaccha bhadre punastatra sakāśaṃ bhāratasya vai। nāhamicchāmi bhīṣmeṇa gṛhītāṃ tvāṃ prasahya vai ॥5-172-5॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle lady; पुनः (punah) - again; तत्र (tatra) - there; सकाशं (sakāśaṃ) - to the presence; भारतस्य (bhāratasya) - of Bharata; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; गृहीतां (gṛhītāṃ) - taken; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; प्रसह्य (prasabya) - forcibly; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Go, O gentle lady, again there to the presence of Bharata. I do not wish you to be taken by Bhishma forcibly, indeed.)
Go back, dear lady, to the presence of Bharata. I do not wish for you to be taken by Bhishma against your will.
त्वं हि निर्जित्य भीष्मेण नीता प्रीतिमती तदा। परामृश्य महायुद्धे निर्जित्य पृथिवीपतीन् ॥ नाहं त्वय्यन्यपूर्वायां भार्यार्थी वरवर्णिनि ॥५-१७२-६॥
tvaṁ hi nirjitya bhīṣmeṇa nītā prītimatī tadā। parāmṛśya mahāyuddhe nirjitya pṛthivīpatīn ॥ nāhaṁ tvayyanyapūrvāyāṁ bhāryārthī varavarṇini ॥5-172-6॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; नीता (nītā) - led; प्रीतिमती (prītimatī) - pleased; तदा (tadā) - then; परामृश्य (parāmṛśya) - considering; महायुद्धे (mahāyuddhe) - in the great battle; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; पृथिवीपतीन् (pṛthivīpatīn) - the lords of the earth; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अन्यपूर्वायां (anyapūrvāyāṁ) - in another before; भार्यार्थी (bhāryārthī) - seeking a wife; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O beautiful one;]
(You, indeed, having conquered, were led by Bhishma, pleased then. Considering in the great battle, having conquered the lords of the earth. I am not seeking a wife in you, O beautiful one, who was in another before.)
Indeed, you were led by Bhishma after conquering, and were pleased then. Reflecting on the great battle, having conquered the rulers of the earth, I am not seeking a wife in you, O beautiful lady, who belonged to another before.
कथमस्मद्विधो राजा परपूर्वां प्रवेशयेत्। नारीं विदितविज्ञानः परेषां धर्ममादिशन् ॥ यथेष्टं गम्यतां भद्रे मा ते कालोऽत्यगादयम् ॥५-१७२-७॥
kathamasmadvidho rājā parapūrvāṃ praveśayet। nārīṃ viditavijñānaḥ pareṣāṃ dharmamādiśan ॥ yatheṣṭaṃ gamyatāṃ bhadre mā te kālo'tyagādayam ॥5-172-7॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; अस्मद्विधः (asmadvidhaḥ) - like us; राजा (rājā) - king; परपूर्वाम् (parapūrvām) - another's wife; प्रवेशयेत् (praveśayet) - would allow to enter; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; विदितविज्ञानः (viditavijñānaḥ) - one who knows; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; आदिशन् (ādiśan) - instructing; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as you wish; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - go; भद्रे (bhadre) - O lady; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - your; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - pass away; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(How would a king like us allow another's wife to enter? A knowledgeable person instructing others' duty. Go as you wish, O lady, do not let your time pass away.)
How could a king like us allow another man's wife to enter? A wise person instructing others on their duty. Go as you wish, dear lady, do not let your time pass away.
अम्बा तमब्रवीद्राजन्ननङ्गशरपीडिता। मैवं वद महीपाल नैतदेवं कथञ्चन ॥५-१७२-८॥
ambā tam abravīd rājan anaṅga-śara-pīḍitā। maivaṃ vada mahīpāla naitad evaṃ kathañcana ॥5-172-8॥
[अम्बा (ambā) - mother; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनङ्ग (anaṅga) - of love; शर (śara) - arrow; पीडिता (pīḍitā) - afflicted; मैवं (maivaṃ) - not so; वद (vada) - speak; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O ruler of the earth; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Mother, afflicted by the arrow of love, said to him, "O king, do not speak so, O ruler of the earth, this is not so in any way.")
The mother, struck by the arrow of love, addressed him, saying, "O king, do not speak in such a manner, O ruler of the earth, this is not the case at all."
नास्मि प्रीतिमती नीता भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शन। बलान्नीतास्मि रुदती विद्राव्य पृथिवीपतीन् ॥५-१७२-९॥
nāsmi prītimatī nītā bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśana। balānnītāsmi rudatī vidrāvya pṛthivīpatīn ॥5-172-9॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - am; प्रीतिमती (prītimatī) - pleased; नीता (nītā) - led; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; अमित्रकर्शन (amitrakarśana) - O enemy tormentor; बलात् (balāt) - by force; नीता (nītā) - led; अस्मि (asmi) - am; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; विद्राव्य (vidrāvya) - having driven away; पृथिवीपतीन् (pṛthivīpatīn) - the lords of the earth;]
(I am not pleased, O enemy tormentor, led by Bhishma. By force, I am led, weeping, having driven away the lords of the earth.)
I am not happy, O tormentor of enemies, being taken away by Bhishma. I am forcibly led away, crying, after having defeated the kings of the earth.
भजस्व मां शाल्वपते भक्तां बालामनागसम्। भक्तानां हि परित्यागो न धर्मेषु प्रशस्यते ॥५-१७२-१०॥
bhajasva māṃ śālvapate bhaktāṃ bālāmanāgasam। bhaktānāṃ hi parityāgo na dharmeṣu praśasyate ॥5-172-10॥
[भजस्व (bhajasva) - worship; मां (māṃ) - me; शाल्वपते (śālvapate) - O lord of the Śālvas; भक्तां (bhaktāṃ) - devoted; बालामनागसम् (bālāmanāgasam) - innocent girl; भक्तानां (bhaktānāṃ) - of devotees; हि (hi) - indeed; परित्यागो (parityāgo) - abandonment; न (na) - not; धर्मेषु (dharmeṣu) - in duties; प्रशस्यते (praśasyate) - is praised;]
(Worship me, O lord of the Śālvas, a devoted and innocent girl. Indeed, the abandonment of devotees is not praised in duties.)
O lord of the Śālvas, worship me, an innocent and devoted girl, for abandoning devotees is not considered virtuous in any duty.
साहमामन्त्र्य गाङ्गेयं समरेष्वनिवर्तिनम्। अनुज्ञाता च तेनैव तवैव गृहमागता ॥५-१७२-११॥
sāham āmantrya gāṅgeyaṃ samareṣv anivartinam। anujñātā ca tenaiva tavaiva gṛham āgatā ॥5-172-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṃ) - Ganges-born; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; अनिवर्तिनम् (anivartinam) - non-retreating; अनुज्ञाता (anujñātā) - permitted; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; एव (eva) - only; तव (tava) - your; एव (eva) - only; गृहम् (gṛham) - home; आगता (āgatā) - arrived;]
(She, having addressed the Ganges-born, non-retreating in battles, and permitted by him, only arrived at your home.)
After addressing the steadfast warrior born of the Ganges, and receiving his permission, she returned to your home.
न स भीष्मो महाबाहुर्मामिच्छति विशां पते। भ्रातृहेतोः समारम्भो भीष्मस्येति श्रुतं मया ॥५-१७२-१२॥
na sa bhīṣmo mahābāhurmāmicchati viśāṃ pate। bhrātṛhetoḥ samārambho bhīṣmasyeti śrutaṃ mayā ॥5-172-12॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; माम् (mām) - me; इच्छति (icchati) - wishes; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; भ्रातृहेतोः (bhrātṛhetoḥ) - for the sake of brother; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - endeavor; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Not he, Bhishma, mighty-armed, wishes me, O lord of the people. For the sake of brother, endeavor of Bhishma, thus heard by me.)
I have heard that the mighty-armed Bhishma does not wish for me, O lord of the people, due to the endeavor for the sake of his brother.
भगिन्यौ मम ये नीते अम्बिकाम्बालिके नृप। प्रादाद्विचित्रवीर्याय गाङ्गेयो हि यवीयसे ॥५-१७२-१३॥
bhaginyau mama ye nīte ambikāmbālike nṛpa। prādādvicitravīryāya gāṅgeyo hi yavīyase ॥5-172-13॥
[भगिन्यौ (bhaginyau) - sisters; मम (mama) - my; ये (ye) - who; नीते (nīte) - taken; अम्बिकाम्बालिके (ambikāmbālike) - Ambika and Ambalika; नृप (nṛpa) - king; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; विचित्रवीर्याय (vicitravīryāya) - to Vichitravirya; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - son of Ganga; हि (hi) - indeed; यवीयसे (yavīyase) - younger;]
(The sisters of mine who were taken, Ambika and Ambalika, O king, were indeed given to the younger Vichitravirya by the son of Ganga.)
The son of Ganga indeed gave my sisters, Ambika and Ambalika, to the younger Vichitravirya, O king.
यथा शाल्वपते नान्यं नरं ध्यामि कथञ्चन। त्वामृते पुरुषव्याघ्र तथा मूर्धानमालभे ॥५-१७२-१४॥
yathā śālvapate nānyaṃ naraṃ dhyāmi kathaṃcana। tvāmṛte puruṣavyāghra tathā mūrdhānamālabhe ॥5-172-14॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; शाल्वपते (śālvapate) - O lord of the Śālvas; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; नरं (naraṃ) - man; ध्यामि (dhyāmi) - I think; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; तथा (tathā) - thus; मूर्धानम् (mūrdhānam) - head; आलभे (ālabhe) - I touch;]
(As, O lord of the Śālvas, I do not think of another man in any way except you, O tiger among men, thus I touch my head.)
O lord of the Śālvas, I consider no other man but you, O tiger among men, and thus I bow my head.
न चान्यपूर्वा राजेन्द्र त्वामहं समुपस्थिता। सत्यं ब्रवीमि शाल्वैतत्सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥५-१७२-१५॥
na cānyapūrvā rājendra tvāmahaṁ samupasthitā। satyaṁ bravīmi śālvaitatsatyenātmānamālabhe ॥5-172-15॥

(Not preceded by others, O king, I have approached you. I speak the truth, O Śālva, I touch my self by truth.)

भजस्व मां विशालाक्ष स्वयं कन्यामुपस्थिताम्। अनन्यपूर्वां राजेन्द्र त्वत्प्रसादाभिकाङ्क्षिणीम् ॥५-१७२-१६॥
bhajasva māṁ viśālākṣa svayaṁ kanyāmupasthitām। ananyapūrvāṁ rājendra tvatprasādābhikāṅkṣiṇīm ॥5-172-16॥
[भजस्व (bhajasva) - worship; मां (māṁ) - me; विशालाक्ष (viśālākṣa) - O large-eyed one; स्वयं (svayaṁ) - myself; कन्याम् (kanyām) - daughter; उपस्थिताम् (upasthitām) - present; अनन्यपूर्वाम् (ananyapūrvām) - unprecedented; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसाद (prasāda) - favor; अभिकाङ्क्षिणीम् (abhikāṅkṣiṇīm) - desiring;]
(Worship me, O large-eyed one, myself, the daughter present, unprecedented, O king, desiring your favor.)
O King, worship me, the large-eyed one, who is present here as an unprecedented daughter, desiring your favor.
तामेवं भाषमाणां तु शाल्वः काशिपतेः सुताम्। अत्यजद्भरतश्रेष्ठ त्वचं जीर्णामिवोरगः ॥५-१७२-१७॥
tāmevaṃ bhāṣamāṇāṃ tu śālvaḥ kāśipateḥ sutām। atyajadbharataśreṣṭha tvacaṃ jīrṇāmivoragaḥ ॥5-172-17॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भाषमाणां (bhāṣamāṇāṃ) - speaking; तु (tu) - but; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the king of Kāśi; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; अत्यजत् (atyajat) - abandoned; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; त्वचं (tvacaṃ) - skin; जीर्णाम् (jīrṇām) - worn-out; इव (iva) - like; उरगः (uragaḥ) - a serpent;]
(Thus speaking, Śālva abandoned the daughter of the king of Kāśi, O best of the Bharatas, like a serpent sheds worn-out skin.)
Śālva, after hearing her speak in such a manner, abandoned the daughter of the king of Kāśi, just as a serpent sheds its old skin, O best of the Bharatas.
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमानस्तयानघ। नाश्रद्दधच्छाल्वपतिः कन्याया भरतर्षभ ॥५-१७२-१८॥
evaṃ bahuvidhair vākyair yācyamānas tayānagha। nāśraddadhac chālvapatiḥ kanyāyā bharatarṣabha ॥5-172-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by various; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - words; याच्यमानः (yācyamānaḥ) - being requested; तया (tayā) - by her; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; न (na) - not; अश्रद्दधत् (aśraddadhat) - believed; शाल्वपतिः (śālvapatiḥ) - the lord of the Śālvas; कन्यायाः (kanyāyāḥ) - of the maiden; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus, being requested by various words by her, O sinless one, the lord of the Śālvas did not believe the maiden, O best of the Bharatas.)
Despite being earnestly requested in many ways by her, the lord of the Śālvas, O sinless one, did not believe the maiden, O best of the Bharatas.
ततः सा मन्युनाविष्टा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता। अब्रवीत्साश्रुनयना बाष्पविह्वलया गिरा ॥५-१७२-१९॥
tataḥ sā manyunāviṣṭā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā। abravītsāśrunayanā bāṣpavihvalayā girā ॥5-172-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; मन्युनाविष्टा (manyunāviṣṭā) - overcome with anger; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - eldest; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the king of Kashi; सुता (sutā) - daughter; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; साश्रुनयना (sāśrunayanā) - with tearful eyes; बाष्पविह्वलया (bāṣpavihvalayā) - with a voice choked with tears; गिरा (girā) - with speech;]
(Then she, the eldest daughter of the king of Kashi, overcome with anger, said with tearful eyes and a voice choked with tears.)
Then the eldest daughter of the king of Kashi, overwhelmed with anger, spoke with tear-filled eyes and a voice trembling with emotion.
त्वया त्यक्ता गमिष्यामि यत्र यत्र विशां पते। तत्र मे सन्तु गतयः सन्तः सत्यं यथाब्रुवम् ॥५-१७२-२०॥
tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi yatra yatra viśāṃ pate। tatra me santu gatayaḥ santaḥ satyaṃ yathābruvam ॥5-172-20॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; त्यक्ता (tyaktā) - abandoned; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; यत्र (yatra) - where; यत्र (yatra) - where; विशां (viśāṃ) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; सन्तु (santu) - may be; गतयः (gatayaḥ) - paths; सन्तः (santaḥ) - good; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; यथा (yathā) - as; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I have spoken;]

O lord of men, having been abandoned by you, I shall go wherever I can; may my paths be righteous there, as I have truthfully declared.
एवं सम्भाषमाणां तु नृशंसः शाल्वराट्तदा। पर्यत्यजत कौरव्य करुणं परिदेवतीम् ॥५-१७२-२१॥
evaṃ sambhāṣamāṇāṃ tu nṛśaṃsaḥ śālvarāṭ tadā। paryatyajata kauravya karuṇaṃ paridevatīm ॥5-172-21॥

(Go, go, he said to her, Śālva spoke again and again. I fear Bhīṣma, O beautiful-hipped one, and you belong to Bhīṣma.)
Śālva repeatedly urged her to go, saying, 'Go, go.' O beautiful-hipped one, I fear Bhīṣma, and you are under Bhīṣma's protection.
एवमुक्ता तु सा तेन शाल्वेनादीर्घदर्शिना। निश्चक्राम पुराद्दीना रुदती कुररी यथा ॥५-१७२-२३॥
evamuktā tu sā tena śālvenādīrghadarśinā। niścakrāma purāddīnā rudatī kurarī yathā ॥5-172-23॥
