ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ मातरं वीरमातरम् । अभिगम्योपसङ्गृह्य दाशेयीमिदमब्रुवम् ॥५-१७१-१॥
tato'haṃ bharataśreṣṭha mātaraṃ vīramātaram । abhigamyopasaṅgṛhya dāśeyīm idam abruvam ॥5-171-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; वीरमातरम् (vīramātaram) - heroic mother; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; उपसङ्गृह्य (upasaṅgṛhya) - embracing; दाशेयीम् (dāśeyīm) - to the maid; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said;]
(Then I, O best of the Bharatas, approaching and embracing the heroic mother, said this to the maid.)
Then, O esteemed Bharata, I approached and embraced my heroic mother and said this to the maid.
इमाः काशिपतेः कन्या मया निर्जित्य पार्थिवान्। विचित्रवीर्यस्य कृते वीर्यशुल्का उपार्जिताः ॥५-१७१-२॥
imāḥ kāśipateḥ kanyā mayā nirjitya pārthivān। vicitravīryasya kṛte vīryaśulkā upārjitāḥ ॥5-171-2॥
[इमाः (imāḥ) - these; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the king of Kāśi; कन्या (kanyā) - daughters; मया (mayā) - by me; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; विचित्रवीर्यस्य (vicitravīryasya) - for Vicitravīrya; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; वीर्यशुल्का (vīryaśulkā) - as a bride-price; उपार्जिताः (upārjitāḥ) - were obtained;]
(These daughters of the king of Kāśi were obtained by me, having conquered the kings, as a bride-price for the sake of Vicitravīrya.)
I won these daughters of the king of Kāśi by defeating the kings, and they were obtained as a bride-price for Vicitravīrya.
ततो मूर्धन्युपाघ्राय पर्यश्रुनयना नृप। आह सत्यवती हृष्टा दिष्ट्या पुत्र जितं त्वया ॥५-१७१-३॥
tato mūrdhanyupāghrāya paryaśrunayanā nṛpaḥ। āha satyavatī hṛṣṭā diṣṭyā putra jitaṃ tvayā ॥5-171-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; उपाघ्राय (upāghrāya) - having smelled; पर्यश्रुनयना (paryaśrunayanā) - with tearful eyes; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; आह (āha) - said; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; हृष्टा (hṛṣṭā) - joyful; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; पुत्र (putra) - son; जितं (jitaṃ) - conquered; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Then, having smelled on the head, with tearful eyes, the king said, "Satyavati, joyful, fortunately, son, conquered by you.")
Then, with tears in his eyes, the king smelled his son's head and joyfully said to Satyavati, "Fortunately, my son, you have conquered."
सत्यवत्यास्त्वनुमते विवाहे समुपस्थिते। उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता ॥५-१७१-४॥
satyavatyāstvanumate vivāhe samupasthite। uvāca vākyaṃ savrīḍā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā ॥5-171-4॥
[सत्यवत्याः (satyavatyāḥ) - of Satyavati; अनुमते (anumate) - with permission; विवाहे (vivāhe) - at the marriage; समुपस्थिते (samupasthite) - being present; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; सव्रीडा (savrīḍā) - bashfully; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - the eldest; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the king of Kashi; सुता (sutā) - daughter;]
(With Satyavati's permission, at the marriage being present, the eldest daughter of the king of Kashi bashfully said words.)
With Satyavati's consent, as the marriage was taking place, the eldest daughter of the king of Kashi spoke bashfully.
भीष्म त्वमसि धर्मज्ञः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः। श्रुत्वा च धर्म्यं वचनं मह्यं कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥५-१७१-५॥
bhīṣma tvam asi dharmajñaḥ sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ। śrutvā ca dharmyaṃ vacanaṃ mahyaṃ kartum ihārhasi ॥5-171-5॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः (sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ) - expert in all scriptures; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; महम् (mahyam) - to me; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought to;]
(Bhishma, you are a knower of dharma and an expert in all scriptures. Having heard the righteous words, you ought to do this for me here.)
Bhishma, you are well-versed in dharma and all scriptures. Therefore, after hearing my righteous words, you should act accordingly here.
मया शाल्वपतिः पूर्वं मनसाभिवृतो वरः। तेन चास्मि वृता पूर्वं रहस्यविदिते पितुः ॥५-१७१-६॥
mayā śālvapatiḥ pūrvaṃ manasābhivṛto varaḥ। tena cāsmi vṛtā pūrvaṃ rahasyavidite pituḥ ॥5-171-6॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; शाल्वपतिः (śālvapatiḥ) - king of Śālva; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; अभिवृतः (abhivṛtaḥ) - chosen; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वृता (vṛtā) - chosen; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; रहस्यविदिते (rahasyavidite) - secretly known; पितुः (pituḥ) - to father;]
(By me, the king of Śālva was previously chosen in mind as a boon. By him, I am also chosen previously, secretly known to father.)
I had previously chosen the king of Śālva in my mind as a boon. He, too, had chosen me before, as my father secretly knew.
कथं मामन्यकामां त्वं राजञ्शास्त्रमधीत्य वै। वासयेथा गृहे भीष्म कौरवः सन्विशेषतः ॥५-१७१-७॥
kathaṁ māmanyakāmāṁ tvaṁ rājañśāstramadhītya vai। vāsayethā gṛhe bhīṣma kauravaḥ sanviśeṣataḥ ॥5-171-7॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; माम् (mām) - me; अन्यकामाम् (anyakāmām) - desiring another; त्वम् (tvam) - you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शास्त्रम् (śāstram) - scripture; अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; वै (vai) - indeed; वासयेथा (vāsayethā) - you would keep; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - Kaurava; सन्विशेषतः (sanviśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(How, desiring another, would you, O king, having studied the scripture, indeed keep me in the house, Bhishma, the Kaurava, especially?)
O king, how could you, after studying the scriptures, keep me, who desires another, in the house, especially Bhishma, the Kaurava?
एतद्बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य मनसा भरतर्षभ। यत्क्षमं ते महाबाहो तदिहारब्धुमर्हसि ॥५-१७१-८॥
etadbuddhyā viniścitya manasā bharatarṣabha। yatkṣamaṃ te mahābāho tadihārabdhum arhasi ॥5-171-8॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intellect; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having determined; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas; यत् (yat) - what; क्षमं (kṣamaṃ) - proper; ते (te) - for you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; तत् (tad) - that; इह (iha) - here; आरब्धुम् (ārabdhum) - to undertake; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(Having determined this with intellect and mind, O best of Bharatas, what is proper for you, O mighty-armed, that you should undertake here.)

स मां प्रतीक्षते व्यक्तं शाल्वराजो विशां पते। कृपां कुरु महाबाहो मयि धर्मभृतां वर ॥ त्वं हि सत्यव्रतो वीर पृथिव्यामिति नः श्रुतम् ॥५-१७१-९॥
sa māṃ pratīkṣate vyaktaṃ śālvarājo viśāṃ pate। kṛpāṃ kuru mahābāho mayi dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥ tvaṃ hi satyavrato vīra pṛthivyāmiti naḥ śrutam ॥5-171-9॥
[स (sa) - he; मां (māṃ) - me; प्रतीक्षते (pratīkṣate) - awaits; व्यक्तं (vyaktaṃ) - clearly; शाल्वराजः (śālvarājaḥ) - king of Śālva; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the people; पते (pate) - lord; कृपां (kṛpāṃ) - mercy; कुरु (kuru) - do; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - mighty-armed; मयि (mayi) - on me; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtāṃ) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्यव्रतः (satyavrataḥ) - truthful vow; वीर (vīra) - hero; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(He clearly awaits me, the king of Śālva, lord of the people. Show mercy, mighty-armed one, on me, best of the upholders of dharma. You are indeed known to us as the hero with a truthful vow on earth.)
The king of Śālva, lord of the people, is clearly waiting for me. O mighty-armed one, show mercy upon me, for you are the best among the upholders of dharma. We have heard that you are indeed the hero who upholds truth on earth.
