ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे कार्यवन्तोऽभवंस्तदा। तां कन्यां चिन्तयन्तो वै किं कार्यमिति धर्मिणः ॥५-१७४-१॥
tataste tāpasāḥ sarve kāryavanto'bhavaṃstadā। tāṃ kanyāṃ cintayanto vai kiṃ kāryamiti dharmiṇaḥ ॥5-174-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कार्यवन्तः (kāryavantaḥ) - engaged in action; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; ताम् (tām) - that; कन्याम् (kanyām) - girl; चिन्तयन्तः (cintayantaḥ) - thinking; वै (vai) - indeed; किम् (kim) - what; कार्य (kārya) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मिणः (dharmiṇaḥ) - righteous;]
(Then all those ascetics became engaged in action. Thinking about that girl, indeed, what is to be done, thus the righteous.)
Then all the ascetics became active, pondering over what should be done about the girl, as was their duty.
केचिदाहुः पितुर्वेश्म नीयतामिति तापसाः। केचिदस्मदुपालम्भे मतिं चक्रुर्द्विजोत्तमाः ॥५-१७४-२॥
kecid āhuḥ pitur veśma nīyatām iti tāpasāḥ। kecid asmad upālambhe matiṃ cakrur dvijottamāḥ ॥5-174-2॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; आहुः (āhuḥ) - said; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; वेश्म (veśma) - house; नीयताम् (nīyatām) - be taken; इति (iti) - thus; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; केचित् (kecit) - some; अस्मत् (asmad) - our; उपालम्भे (upālambhe) - reproach; मतिम् (matim) - mind; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; द्विजोत्तमाः (dvijottamāḥ) - best of the twice-born;]
(Some ascetics said, "Let him be taken to the father's house." Some of the best of the twice-born made up their minds to reproach us.)
Some ascetics suggested taking him to his father's house, while some of the best Brahmins decided to reproach us.
केचिच्छाल्वपतिं गत्वा नियोज्यमिति मेनिरे। नेति केचिद्व्यवस्यन्ति प्रत्याख्याता हि तेन सा ॥५-१७४-३॥
kecicchālvapatiṃ gatvā niyojyamiti menire। neti kecidvyavasyanti pratyākhyātā hi tena sā ॥5-174-3॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; शाल्वपतिम् (śālvapatim) - to the lord of the Śālvas; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; नियोज्यम् (niyojyam) - to be employed; इति (iti) - thus; मेनिरे (menire) - thought; न (na) - not; इति (iti) - thus; केचित् (kecit) - some; व्यवस्यन्ति (vyavasyanti) - decide; प्रत्याख्याता (pratyākhyātā) - rejected; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; सा (sā) - she;]
(Some thought, having gone to the lord of the Śālvas, to be employed thus. Some decide not thus, for she was indeed rejected by him.)
Some believed that they should go to the lord of the Śālvas to be employed, while others decided against it, as she was indeed rejected by him.
एवं गते किं नु शक्यं भद्रे कर्तुं मनीषिभिः। पुनरूचुश्च ते सर्वे तापसाः संशितव्रताः ॥५-१७४-४॥
evaṃ gate kiṃ nu śakyaṃ bhadre kartuṃ manīṣibhiḥ। punarūcuśca te sarve tāpasāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ॥5-174-4॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गते (gate) - having gone; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; मनीषिभिः (manīṣibhiḥ) - by the wise; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm in their vows;]
(Thus having gone, what indeed is possible, O auspicious one, to do by the wise? Again, all those ascetics firm in their vows said.)
When the situation was thus, what indeed could be done by the wise, O auspicious one? Then all those ascetics, firm in their vows, spoke again.
अलं प्रव्रजितेनेह भद्रे शृणु हितं वचः। इतो गच्छस्व भद्रं ते पितुरेव निवेशनम् ॥५-१७४-५॥
alaṁ pravrajiteneha bhadre śṛṇu hitaṁ vacaḥ। ito gacchasva bhadraṁ te pitureva niveśanam ॥5-174-5॥
[अलम् (alam) - enough; प्रव्रजितेन (pravrajitena) - with wandering; इह (iha) - here; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; ते (te) - your; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; एव (eva) - only; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - abode;]
(Enough with wandering here, O auspicious one, listen to beneficial words. From here, go for your welfare to your father's abode only.)

प्रतिपत्स्यति राजा स पिता ते यदनन्तरम्। तत्र वत्स्यसि कल्याणि सुखं सर्वगुणान्विता ॥ न च तेऽन्या गतिर्न्याय्या भवेद्भद्रे यथा पिता ॥५-१७४-६॥
pratipatsyati rājā sa pitā te yadanantaram। tatra vatsyasi kalyāṇi sukhaṃ sarvaguṇānvitā ॥ na ca te'nyā gatirnyāyyā bhavedbhadre yathā pitā ॥5-174-6॥
[प्रतिपत्स्यति (pratipatsyati) - will undertake; राजा (rājā) - king; स (sa) - he; पिता (pitā) - father; ते (te) - your; यदनन्तरम् (yadanantaram) - thereafter; तत्र (tatra) - there; वत्स्यसि (vatsyasi) - you will dwell; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; सर्वगुणान्विता (sarvaguṇānvitā) - endowed with all virtues; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अन्या (anyā) - other; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; न्याय्या (nyāyyā) - just; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle lady; यथा (yathā) - as; पिता (pitā) - father;]
(The king, your father, will undertake thereafter. There you will dwell, O auspicious one, in happiness, endowed with all virtues. And no other path would be just for you, O gentle lady, as your father.)
Your father, the king, will take care of everything thereafter. You will live there happily, O blessed one, with all virtues. There is no other rightful path for you, dear lady, than what your father decides.
पतिर्वापि गतिर्नार्याः पिता वा वरवर्णिनि। गतिः पतिः समस्थाया विषमे तु पिता गतिः ॥५-१७४-७॥
patirvāpi gatirnāryāḥ pitā vā varavarṇini। gatiḥ patiḥ samasthāyā viṣame tu pitā gatiḥ ॥5-174-7॥
[पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; गतिः (gatiḥ) - support; नार्याः (nāryāḥ) - of a woman; पिता (pitā) - father; वा (vā) - or; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O beautiful lady; गतिः (gatiḥ) - support; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; समस्थायाः (samasthāyāḥ) - in normal times; विषमे (viṣame) - in difficult times; तु (tu) - but; पिता (pitā) - father; गतिः (gatiḥ) - support;]
(The husband or the father is the support of a woman, O beautiful lady. The husband is the support in normal times, but the father is the support in difficult times.)
O beautiful lady, either the husband or the father serves as the support for a woman. In normal circumstances, the husband is the support, but in difficult times, it is the father who provides support.
प्रव्रज्या हि सुदुःखेयं सुकुमार्या विशेषतः। राजपुत्र्याः प्रकृत्या च कुमार्यास्तव भामिनि ॥५-१७४-८॥
pravrajyā hi suduḥkheyaṃ sukumāryā viśeṣataḥ। rājaputryāḥ prakṛtyā ca kumāryāstava bhāmini ॥5-174-8॥
[प्रव्रज्या (pravrajyā) - renunciation; हि (hi) - indeed; सुदुःखा (suduḥkhā) - very difficult; इयम् (iyam) - this; सुकुमार्या (sukumāryā) - for the delicate one; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; राजपुत्र्याः (rājaputryāḥ) - for the princess; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; च (ca) - and; कुमार्याः (kumāryāḥ) - for the maiden; तव (tava) - your; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady;]
(Renunciation is indeed very difficult for the delicate one, especially for the princess by nature and for the maiden, O beautiful lady.)

(O auspicious one, indeed many faults exist, O beautiful one. In the hermitage, indeed, of the one residing, they would not be in the father's house.)

tatastu te'bruvanvākyaṃ brāhmaṇāstāṃ tapasvinīm। tvāmihaikākinīṃ dṛṣṭvā nirjane gahane vane ॥ prārthayiṣyanti rājendrāstasmānmaivaṃ manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥5-174-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brahmins; ताम् (tām) - that; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - ascetic woman; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; इह (iha) - here; एकाकिनीम् (ekākinīm) - alone; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; निर्जने (nirjane) - in the deserted; गहने (gahane) - dense; वने (vane) - forest; प्रार्थयिष्यन्ति (prārthayiṣyanti) - will desire; राजेन्द्राः (rājendrāḥ) - kings; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मा (mā) - do not; एवम् (evam) - thus; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(Then the Brahmins said these words to that ascetic woman: "Seeing you alone here in the deserted dense forest, the kings will desire you; therefore, do not make up your mind thus.")
Then the Brahmins spoke to the ascetic woman, warning her that being alone in the dense and deserted forest might attract the attention of kings, and advised her not to entertain such thoughts.

न शक्यं काशिनगरीं पुनर्गन्तुं पितुर्गृहान्। अवज्ञाता भविष्यामि बान्धवानां न संशयः ॥५-१७४-११॥
na śakyaṃ kāśinagarīṃ punargantuṃ piturgṛhān। avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi bāndhavānāṃ na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-174-11॥
[न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; काशिनगरीं (kāśinagarīṃ) - to the city of Kashi; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गन्तुं (gantuṃ) - to go; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; गृहान् (gṛhān) - house; अवज्ञाता (avajñātā) - disregarded; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I will become; बान्धवानां (bāndhavānāṃ) - of relatives; न (na) - no; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(It is not possible to go again to the city of Kashi, to the father's house. I will become disregarded by the relatives, no doubt.)

उषिता ह्यन्यथा बाल्ये पितुर्वेश्मनि तापसाः। नाहं गमिष्ये भद्रं वस्तत्र यत्र पिता मम ॥ तपस्तप्तुमभीप्सामि तापसैः परिपालिता ॥५-१७४-१२॥

[उषिता (uṣitā) - lived; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in house; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; गमिष्ये (gamiṣye) - will go; भद्रम् (bhadram) - good; वः (vaḥ) - to you; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; तप्तुम् (taptum) - to perform; अभीप्सामि (abhipsāmi) - I wish; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by ascetics; परिपालिता (paripālitā) - protected;]
(Indeed, lived otherwise in childhood in father's house, ascetics. I will not go, good to you, there where my father is. I wish to perform penance, protected by ascetics.)

yathā pare'pi me loke na syādevaṃ mahātyayaḥ। daurbhāgyaṃ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāstasmāttapsyāmyahaṃ tapaḥ ॥5-174-13॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; परे (pare) - others; अपि (api) - also; मे (me) - my; लोके (loke) - world; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - be; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; महात्ययः (mahātyayaḥ) - great calamity; दौर्भाग्यं (daurbhāgyaṃ) - misfortune; ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठाः (brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ) - O best of Brahmins; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तप्स्यामि (tapsyāmi) - I shall perform penance; अहम् (aham) - I; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance;]
(As others also in my world may not be thus a great calamity, misfortune, O best of Brahmins, therefore I shall perform penance.)
O best of Brahmins, in order to prevent such a great calamity and misfortune from occurring in my world, I shall therefore undertake penance.

इत्येवं तेषु विप्रेषु चिन्तयत्सु तथा तथा। राजर्षिस्तद्वनं प्राप्तस्तपस्वी होत्रवाहनः ॥५-१७४-१४॥
ityevaṃ teṣu vipreṣu cintayatsu tathā tathā। rājarṣistadvanaṃ prāptastapasvī hotravāhanaḥ ॥5-174-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - among the wise; चिन्तयत्सु (cintayatsu) - while contemplating; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; तत् (tad) - that; वनं (vanam) - forest; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; होत्रवाहनः (hotravāhanaḥ) - Hotravahana;]
(Thus, among them, the wise were contemplating in that manner. The royal sage, the ascetic Hotravahana, arrived at that forest.)

(Then all those ascetics indeed worshipped that king with offerings, welcome, and other things, with seat and water.)

तस्योपविष्टस्य ततो विश्रान्तस्योपशृण्वतः। पुनरेव कथां चक्रुः कन्यां प्रति वनौकसः ॥५-१७४-१६॥

(While he was sitting there, resting and listening, the forest dwellers again indeed made a story towards the girl.)
As he sat there, resting and listening, the forest dwellers once more began to tell a story to the girl.
अम्बायास्तां कथां श्रुत्वा काशिराज्ञश्च भारत। स वेपमान उत्थाय मातुरस्याः पिता तदा ॥ तां कन्यामङ्कमारोप्य पर्याश्वासयत प्रभो ॥५-१७४-१७॥
ambāyāstāṃ kathāṃ śrutvā kāśirājñaśca bhārata| sa vepamāna utthāya māturasyaḥ pitā tadā ॥ tāṃ kanyāmaṅkamāropya paryāśvāsayat prabho ॥5-174-17॥
[अम्बायाः (ambāyāḥ) - of Ambā; तां (tāṃ) - that; कथां (kathāṃ) - story; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; काशिराज्ञः (kāśirājñaḥ) - of the king of Kāśi; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सः (saḥ) - he; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; पिता (pitā) - father; तदा (tadā) - then; तां (tāṃ) - that; कन्याम् (kanyām) - girl; अङ्कम् (aṅkam) - lap; आरोप्य (āropya) - having placed; पर्याश्वासयत (paryāśvāsayat) - consoled; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Having heard that story of Ambā, O Bhārata, the trembling king of Kāśi then rose, and the father of her mother, having placed that girl on his lap, consoled her, O lord.)

स तामपृच्छत्कार्त्स्न्येन व्यसनोत्पत्तिमादितः। सा च तस्मै यथावृत्तं विस्तरेण न्यवेदयत् ॥५-१७४-१८॥
sa tāmapṛcchatkārtsnyena vyasanotpattimāditaḥ। sā ca tasmai yathāvṛttaṃ vistareṇa nyavedayat ॥5-174-18॥
[स (sa) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in detail; व्यसन (vyasana) - calamity; उत्पत्तिम् (utpattim) - origin; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; यथावृत्तम् (yathāvṛttam) - as it happened; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - narrated;]
(He asked her in detail about the origin of the calamity from the beginning. And she narrated to him as it happened in detail.)
He inquired from her thoroughly about the origin of the misfortune from the start, and she explained everything to him in detail as it had occurred.
ततः स राजर्षिरभूद्दुःखशोकसमन्वितः। कार्यं च प्रतिपेदे तन्मनसा सुमहातपाः ॥५-१७४-१९॥
tataḥ sa rājarṣirabhūdduḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ। kāryaṃ ca pratipede tanmanasā sumahātapāḥ ॥5-174-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; दुःख (duḥkha) - sorrow; शोक (śoka) - grief; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - filled with; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - duty; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - undertook; तन्मनसा (tanmanasā) - with that mind; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - greatly austere;]
(Then he, the royal sage, became filled with sorrow and grief. He undertook his duty with that mind, being greatly austere.)
Then the royal sage, overwhelmed with sorrow and grief, took upon his duties with a focused mind, demonstrating great austerity.
अब्रवीद्वेपमानश्च कन्यामार्तां सुदुःखितः। मा गाः पितृगृहं भद्रे मातुस्ते जनको ह्यहम् ॥५-१७४-२०॥
abravīdvepamānaśca kanyāmārtāṃ suduḥkhitaḥ। mā gāḥ pitṛgṛhaṃ bhadre mātuste janako hyaham ॥5-174-20॥

gaccha madvacanādrāmaṃ jāmadagnyaṃ tapasvinam। rāmastava mahadduḥkhaṃ śokaṃ cāpanayiṣyati ॥ haniṣyati raṇe bhīṣmaṃ na kariṣyati cedvacaḥ ॥5-174-22॥

ततस्तु सस्वरं बाष्पमुत्सृजन्ती पुनः पुनः। अब्रवीत्पितरं मातुः सा तदा होत्रवाहनम् ॥५-१७४-२४॥
tatastu sasvaraṃ bāṣpamutsṛjantī punaḥ punaḥ। abravītpitaraṃ mātuḥ sā tadā hotravāhanam ॥5-174-24॥

kathaṁ ca tīvraṁ duḥkhaṁ me haniṣyati sa bhārgavaḥ। etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotumatha yāsyāmi tatra vai ॥5-174-26॥
