ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे तपसे धृतनिश्चयाम्। दृष्ट्वा न्यवर्तयंस्तात किं कार्यमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥५-१८८-१॥
tataste tāpasāḥ sarve tapase dhṛtaniścayām। dṛṣṭvā nyavartayaṃstāta kiṃ kāryamiti cābruvan ॥5-188-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तपसे (tapase) - for penance; धृतनिश्चयाम् (dhṛtaniścayām) - firmly resolved; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; न्यवर्तयन् (nyavartayan) - turned back; तात (tāta) - O dear; किं (kiṃ) - what; कार्य (kārya) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(Then all those ascetics, firmly resolved for penance, having seen, turned back, and said, "O dear, what is to be done?")
Then all the ascetics, firmly resolved in their penance, upon seeing something, turned back and said, "O dear, what should be done?"
तानुवाच ततः कन्या तपोवृद्धानृषींस्तदा। निराकृतास्मि भीष्मेण भ्रंशिता पतिधर्मतः ॥५-१८८-२॥
tānuvāca tataḥ kanyā tapovṛddhānṛṣīṃstadā। nirākṛtāsmi bhīṣmeṇa bhraṃśitā patidharmataḥ ॥5-188-2॥
[ता (tā) - she; अनुवाच (anuvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; तपःवृद्धान् (tapovṛddhān) - ascetically advanced; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; तदा (tadā) - at that time; निराकृता (nirākṛtā) - rejected; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; भ्रंशिता (bhraṃśitā) - deprived; पतिधर्मतः (patidharmataḥ) - of marital duty;]
(She then said to the ascetically advanced sages: "I am rejected by Bhishma, deprived of marital duty.")
The maiden then addressed the ascetically advanced sages, saying that she had been rejected by Bhishma and deprived of her marital rights.
वधार्थं तस्य दीक्षा मे न लोकार्थं तपोधनाः। निहत्य भीष्मं गच्छेयं शान्तिमित्येव निश्चयः ॥५-१८८-३॥
vadhārthaṃ tasya dīkṣā me na lokārthaṃ tapodhanāḥ। nihatya bhīṣmaṃ gaccheyaṃ śāntimityeva niścayaḥ ॥5-188-3॥
[वधार्थं (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; तस्य (tasya) - his; दीक्षा (dīkṣā) - vow; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; लोकार्थं (lokārtham) - for the sake of the world; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - O ascetics; निहत्य (nihatya) - having killed; भीष्मं (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; गच्छेयं (gaccheyam) - I shall attain; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - determination;]
(My vow is for his killing, not for the sake of the world, O ascetics. Having killed Bhishma, I shall attain peace; thus indeed is the determination.)
My vow is to kill him, not for the benefit of the world, O ascetics. By killing Bhishma, I am determined to attain peace.
यत्कृते दुःखवसतिमिमां प्राप्तास्मि शाश्वतीम्। पतिलोकाद्विहीना च नैव स्त्री न पुमानिह ॥५-१८८-४॥
yatkṛte duḥkhavasatimimāṃ prāptāsmi śāśvatīm। patilokādvihīnā ca naiva strī na pumāniha ॥5-188-4॥
[यत् (yat) - for which; कृते (kṛte) - because of; दुःखवसतिम् (duḥkhavasatim) - abode of sorrow; इमां (imāṃ) - this; प्राप्तास्मि (prāptāsmi) - I have obtained; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; पतिलोकात् (patilokāt) - from husband's world; विहीना (vihīnā) - deprived; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; स्त्री (strī) - woman; न (na) - not; पुमान् (pumān) - man; इह (iha) - here;]
(For which, because of, I have obtained this eternal abode of sorrow, deprived from husband's world, and indeed neither woman nor man here.)
Because of which, I have come to this eternal abode of sorrow, deprived of my husband's world, and here I am neither a woman nor a man.
नाहत्वा युधि गाङ्गेयं निवर्तेयं तपोधनाः। एष मे हृदि सङ्कल्पो यदर्थमिदमुद्यतम् ॥५-१८८-५॥
nāhatvā yudhi gāṅgeyaṃ nivarteyaṃ tapodhanāḥ। eṣa me hṛdi saṅkalpo yadarthamidamudyatam ॥5-188-5॥
[न (na) - not; अहत्वा (ahatvā) - without killing; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; गाङ्गेयम् (gāṅgeyam) - Ganga's son; निवर्तेयम् (nivarteyam) - I shall return; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - O ascetics; एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - my; हृदि (hṛdi) - in heart; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - resolve; यदर्थम् (yadartham) - for which purpose; इदम् (idam) - this; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - is undertaken;]
(I shall not return without killing Ganga's son in battle, O ascetics. This is my resolve in heart for which purpose this is undertaken.)
I will not turn back without defeating Bhishma, the son of Ganga, in battle, O revered sages. This is the resolve in my heart for which I have undertaken this endeavor.
स्त्रीभावे परिनिर्विण्णा पुंस्त्वार्थे कृतनिश्चया। भीष्मे प्रतिचिकीर्षामि नास्मि वार्येति वै पुनः ॥५-१८८-६॥
strībhāve parinirviṇṇā puṃstvārthe kṛtaniścayā। bhīṣme praticikīrṣāmi nāsmi vāryeti vai punaḥ ॥5-188-6॥
[स्त्रीभावे (strībhāve) - in the state of womanhood; परिनिर्विण्णा (parinirviṇṇā) - disenchanted; पुंस्त्वार्थे (puṃstvārthe) - for the sake of manhood; कृतनिश्चया (kṛtaniścayā) - having made a decision; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - towards Bhishma; प्रतिचिकीर्षामि (praticikīrṣāmi) - I wish to act; न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - am I; वार्येति (vāryeti) - to be stopped; वै (vai) - indeed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Disenchanted with womanhood, having made a decision for the sake of manhood, I wish to act towards Bhishma; I am not to be stopped again, indeed.)
Disenchanted with being a woman and determined to pursue manhood, I intend to act against Bhishma; I shall not be stopped again, indeed.
तां देवो दर्शयामास शूलपाणिरुमापतिः। मध्ये तेषां महर्षीणां स्वेन रूपेण भामिनीम् ॥५-१८८-७॥
tāṃ devo darśayāmāsa śūlapāṇirumā patiḥ। madhye teṣāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ svena rūpeṇa bhāminīm ॥5-188-7॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; शूलपाणिः (śūlapāṇiḥ) - the trident-holder; उमापतिः (umā patiḥ) - the husband of Uma; मध्ये (madhye) - among; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; महर्षीणां (maharṣīṇāṃ) - of the great sages; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - form; भामिनीम् (bhāminīm) - the radiant one;]
(The god, the trident-holder, the husband of Uma, showed her, the radiant one, by his own form among their great sages.)
The god Shiva, holding a trident and husband to Uma, revealed her radiant form among the great sages.
छन्द्यमाना वरेणाथ सा वव्रे मत्पराजयम्। वधिष्यसीति तां देवः प्रत्युवाच मनस्विनीम् ॥५-१८८-८॥
chandyamānā vareṇātha sā vavre matparājayam। vadhiṣyasīti tāṃ devaḥ pratyuvāca manasvinīm ॥5-188-8॥
[छन्द्यमाना (chandyamānā) - being tempted; वरेण (vareṇa) - by a boon; अथ (atha) - then; सा (sā) - she; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; मत्पराजयम् (matparājayam) - my defeat; वधिष्यसि (vadhiṣyasi) - you will kill; इति (iti) - thus; तां (tāṃ) - to her; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; मनस्विनीम् (manasvinīm) - to the wise one;]
(Being tempted by a boon, she then chose my defeat. "You will kill," the god replied to her, the wise one.)

ततः सा पुनरेवाथ कन्या रुद्रमुवाच ह। उपपद्येत्कथं देव स्त्रियो मम जयो युधि ॥ स्त्रीभावेन च मे गाढं मनः शान्तमुमापते ॥५-१८८-९॥
tataḥ sā punarevātha kanyā rudramuvāca ha। upapadyetkathaṁ deva striyo mama jayo yudhi ॥ strībhāvena ca me gāḍhaṁ manaḥ śāntamumāpate ॥5-188-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; उपपद्येत (upapadyeta) - how can it be possible; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; देव (deva) - O god; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; मम (mama) - my; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; स्त्रीभावेन (strībhāvena) - by womanhood; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; गाढं (gāḍham) - deeply; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; शान्तम् (śāntam) - peaceful; उमापते (umāpate) - O lord of Uma;]
(Then she again indeed, the girl, said to Rudra: "O god, how can it be possible that my victory in battle is by womanhood? And my mind is deeply peaceful, O lord of Uma.")
Then the girl again spoke to Rudra: "O god, how can women achieve victory in battle? And my mind is deeply peaceful, O lord of Uma."
प्रतिश्रुतश्च भूतेश त्वया भीष्मपराजयः। यथा स सत्यो भवति तथा कुरु वृषध्वज ॥ यथा हन्यां समागम्य भीष्मं शान्तनवं युधि ॥५-१८८-१०॥
pratiśrutaśca bhūteśa tvayā bhīṣmaparājayaḥ। yathā sa satyo bhavati tathā kuru vṛṣadhvaja ॥ yathā hanyāṃ samāgamya bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ yudhi ॥5-188-10॥
[प्रतिश्रुतः (pratiśrutaḥ) - promised; च (ca) - and; भूतेश (bhūteśa) - O Lord of beings; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; भीष्मपराजयः (bhīṣmaparājayaḥ) - defeat of Bhishma; यथा (yathā) - as; सः (saḥ) - it; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - true; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरु (kuru) - do; वृषध्वज (vṛṣadhvaja) - O bull-bannered one; यथा (yathā) - as; हन्याम् (hanyām) - I may slay; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having approached; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; शान्तनवम् (śāntanavam) - son of Shantanu; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Promised by you, O Lord of beings, is the defeat of Bhishma. As it becomes true, so do, O bull-bannered one, as I may slay Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, having approached in battle.)
O Lord of beings, you have promised the defeat of Bhishma. Ensure that it becomes true, O bull-bannered one, so that I may confront and slay Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, in battle.
तामुवाच महादेवः कन्यां किल वृषध्वजः। न मे वागनृतं भद्रे प्राह सत्यं भविष्यति ॥५-१८८-११॥
tām uvāca mahādevaḥ kanyāṃ kila vṛṣadhvajaḥ। na me vāg anṛtaṃ bhadre prāha satyaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥5-188-11॥
[ताम् (tām) - to her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - to the girl; किल (kila) - indeed; वृषध्वजः (vṛṣadhvajaḥ) - Vrishadhvaja; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; वाक् (vāk) - word; अनृतं (anṛtaṃ) - false; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; प्राह (prāha) - said; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Mahadeva, indeed Vrishadhvaja, said to her, to the girl: "O auspicious one, my word is not false; it will be true.")
Mahadeva, known as Vrishadhvaja, assured the girl, saying: "O auspicious one, my words are true and will come to pass."
वधिष्यसि रणे भीष्मं पुरुषत्वं च लप्स्यसे। स्मरिष्यसि च तत्सर्वं देहमन्यं गता सती ॥५-१८८-१२॥
vadhiṣyasi raṇe bhīṣmaṃ puruṣatvaṃ ca lapsyase। smariṣyasi ca tatsarvaṃ dehamanyaṃ gatā satī ॥5-188-12॥
[वधिष्यसि (vadhiṣyasi) - you will kill; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṃ) - Bhishma; पुरुषत्वं (puruṣatvaṃ) - manhood; च (ca) - and; लप्स्यसे (lapsyase) - you will gain; स्मरिष्यसि (smariṣyasi) - you will remember; च (ca) - and; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṃ) - all that; देहम् (deham) - body; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; गता (gatā) - having gone; सती (satī) - being;]
(You will kill Bhishma in battle and gain manhood. You will remember all that, having gone to another body, being.)

द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता भविष्यसि महारथः। शीघ्रास्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च भविष्यसि सुसंमतः ॥५-१८८-१३॥
drupadasya kule jātā bhaviṣyasi mahārathaḥ। śīghrāstraścitrayodhī ca bhaviṣyasi susammataḥ ॥5-188-13॥
[द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; कुले (kule) - in the family; जाता (jātā) - born; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - a great charioteer; शीघ्रास्त्रः (śīghrāstraḥ) - swift in weapons; चित्रयोधी (citryodhī) - wonderful warrior; च (ca) - and; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; सुसंमतः (susammataḥ) - highly esteemed;]
(Born in the family of Drupada, you will become a great charioteer, swift in weapons, a wonderful warrior, and highly esteemed.)
You will be born in the family of Drupada and will become a highly esteemed great charioteer, known for your swiftness in weapons and as a wonderful warrior.
यथोक्तमेव कल्याणि सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति। भविष्यसि पुमान्पश्चात्कस्माच्चित्कालपर्ययात् ॥५-१८८-१४॥
yathoktameva kalyāṇi sarvametadbhaviṣyati। bhaviṣyasi pumānpaścātkasmāccitkālaparyayāt ॥5-188-14॥
[यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as said; एव (eva) - indeed; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; कस्माच्चित् (kasmāccit) - after some; काल (kāla) - time; पर्ययात् (paryayāt) - period;]
(As said, indeed, O auspicious one, all this will happen. You will become a man afterwards, after some period of time.)
As foretold, O auspicious one, everything will happen as stated. You will become a man after some time.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः कपर्दी वृषभध्वजः। पश्यतामेव विप्राणां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥५-१८८-१५॥
evamuktvā mahātejāḥ kapardī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ। paśyatāmeva viprāṇāṃ tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥5-188-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - greatly powerful; कपर्दी (kapardī) - Kapardi; वृषभध्वजः (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) - Vrishabhadhvaja; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - of those seeing; एव (eva) - indeed; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - of the sages; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Thus having spoken, the greatly powerful Kapardi, Vrishabhadhvaja, indeed disappeared there in the sight of the sages.)
After speaking thus, the immensely powerful Kapardi, known as Vrishabhadhvaja, vanished right there before the eyes of the sages.
ततः सा पश्यतां तेषां महर्षीणामनिन्दिता। समाहृत्य वनात्तस्मात्काष्ठानि वरवर्णिनी ॥५-१८८-१६॥
tataḥ sā paśyatāṃ teṣāṃ maharṣīṇāmaninditā। samāhṛtya vanāttasmātkāṣṭhāni varavarṇinī ॥5-188-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - of those who see; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; महर्षीणाम् (maharṣīṇām) - of the great sages; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless; समाहृत्य (samāhṛtya) - having collected; वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; काष्ठानि (kāṣṭhāni) - woods; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - the one with excellent complexion;]
(Then she, the blameless one, having collected woods from that forest, in the sight of those great sages.)
Then the blameless lady, admired by the great sages, gathered the woods from that forest.
चितां कृत्वा सुमहतीं प्रदाय च हुताशनम्। प्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ महाराज रोषदीप्तेन चेतसा ॥५-१८८-१७॥
citāṁ kṛtvā sumahatīṁ pradāya ca hutāśanam। pradīpte'gnau mahārāja roṣadīptena cetasā ॥5-188-17॥
[चितां (citām) - funeral pyre; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; सुमहतीं (sumahatīm) - very great; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having offered; च (ca) - and; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire; प्रदीप्ते (pradīpte) - blazing; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; रोषदीप्तेन (roṣadīptena) - with anger inflamed; चेतसा (cetasā) - with a mind;]
(Having made a very great funeral pyre and having offered it to the fire, O great king, with a mind inflamed with anger, in the blazing fire.)
O great king, having constructed a very large funeral pyre and offered it to the fire, with a mind inflamed by anger, in the blazing fire.
उक्त्वा भीष्मवधायेति प्रविवेश हुताशनम्। ज्येष्ठा काशिसुता राजन्यमुनामभितो नदीम् ॥५-१८८-१८॥
uktvā bhīṣmavadhāyeti praviveśa hutāśanam। jyeṣṭhā kāśisutā rājanyamunāmabhito nadīm ॥5-188-18॥
[उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; भीष्मवधाय (bhīṣmavadhāya) - for Bhishma's killing; इति (iti) - thus; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - eldest; काशिसुता (kāśisutā) - daughter of Kashi; राजन्यमुनाम् (rājanyamunām) - the royal Yamuna; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - near; नदीम् (nadīm) - river;]
(Having said thus for Bhishma's killing, entered the fire. The eldest daughter of Kashi, near the royal Yamuna river.)
Having declared her intention to kill Bhishma, she entered the fire. The eldest daughter of Kashi was near the royal Yamuna river.
