bhīṣma uvāca॥
Bhishma said:
evamuktasya dūtena drupadasya tadā nṛpa। corasyeva gṛhītasya na prāvartata bhāratī ॥5-191-1॥
After being addressed by the messenger of Drupada, O king, the speech did not proceed as if it were that of a captured thief.
sa yatnamakarottīvraṃ sambandhairanusāntvanaiḥ। dūtairmadhurasambhāṣairnaitadastīti saṃdiśan ॥5-191-2॥
He made a great effort using connections and conciliations, sending messengers with sweet words, instructing them to say, "This is not the case."
sa rājā bhūya evātha kṛtvā tattvata āgamam। kanyeti pāñcālasutāṃ tvaramāṇo'bhiniryayau ॥5-191-3॥
The king, after realizing the truth, quickly went to the daughter of Panchala, referring to her as 'girl'.
tataḥ saṃpreṣayāmāsa mitrāṇāmamitaujasām। duhiturvipralambhaṃ taṃ dhātrīṇāṃ vacanāttadā ॥5-191-4॥
Then, following the words of the nurses, he sent the message of the daughter's separation to the friends of immense strength.
tataḥ samudayaṃ kṛtvā balānāṃ rājasattamaḥ। abhiyāne matiṃ cakre drupadaṃ prati bhārata ॥5-191-5॥
Then, the best of kings, having gathered the forces, decided to march towards Drupada, O Bharata.
tataḥ saṁmantrayāmāsa mitraiḥ saha mahīpatiḥ। hiraṇyavarmā rājendra pāñcālyaṁ pārthivaṁ prati ॥5-191-6॥
Then King Hiranyavarma consulted with his friends regarding the Panchala prince, O King.
tatra vai niścitaṃ teṣām abhūd rājñāṃ mahātmanām। tathyaṃ ced bhavati hy etat kanyā rājañ śikhaṇḍinī ॥ baddhvā pāñcālarājānam ānayiṣyāmahe gṛhān ॥5-191-7॥
There was indeed a certainty among the great kings that if this truth is the daughter, O king, Śikhaṇḍinī, then having captured the king of the Pāñcālas, we shall bring him home.
anyaṁ rājānam ādhāya pāñcāleṣu nareśvaram। ghātayiṣyāma nṛpatiṁ drupadaṁ saśikhaṇḍinam ॥5-191-8॥
We will install another king among the Panchalas and then kill King Drupada along with Shikhandi.
sa tadā dūtamājñāya punaḥ kṣattāramīśvaraḥ। prāsthāpayatpārṣatāya hanmīti tvāṃ sthiro bhava ॥5-191-9॥
The lord, after commanding the messenger once more, sent the minister to the son of Pritha with the message, 'Be resolute in your intent to kill.'
sa prakṛtyā ca vai bhīruḥ kilbiṣī ca narādhipaḥ। bhayaṃ tīvrāmanuprāpto drupadaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ॥5-191-10॥
King Drupada, naturally fearful and sinful, was overtaken by intense fear as the lord of the earth.
visṛjya dūtaṃ dāśārṇaṃ drupadaḥ śokakarśitaḥ। sametya bhāryāṃ rahite vākyamāha narādhipaḥ ॥5-191-11॥
Drupada, overwhelmed with sorrow, dismissed the messenger to the Daśārṇas and spoke to his wife in private.
bhayena mahatāviṣṭo hṛdi śokena cāhataḥ। pāñcālarājo dayitāṃ mātaraṃ vai śikhaṇḍinaḥ ॥5-191-12॥
The king of Panchala, overwhelmed by great fear and struck by sorrow in his heart, was indeed the beloved mother of Shikhandi.
abhiyaasyati maam kopaatsambandhii sumahaabalah। hiranyavarmaa nrpatih karssamaanno varuuthiniim ॥5-191-13॥
The very powerful King Hiranyavarma, who is related to me, will angrily approach, dragging his army.
kimidānīṃ kariṣyāmi mūḍhaḥ kanyāmimāṃ prati। śikhaṇḍī kila putraste kanyeti pariśaṅkitaḥ ॥5-191-14॥
What should I do now, confused about this girl? It is suspected that Shikhandi is indeed your son, thus considered a daughter.
iti niścitya tattvena samitraḥ sabalānugaḥ। vañcito'smīti manvāno māṃ kiloddhartumicchati ॥5-191-15॥
Having truly decided this, with his friends and followers, he thinks, 'I am deceived' and indeed wants to rescue me.
kimatra tathyaṃ suśroṇi kiṃ mithyā brūhi śobhane। śrutvā tvattaḥ śubhe vākyaṃ saṃvidhāsyāmyahaṃ tathā ॥5-191-16॥
O beautiful-hipped one, tell me what is true and what is false here, O lovely one. After hearing your words, O auspicious one, I will act accordingly.
ahaṁ hi saṁśayaṁ prāpto bālā ceyaṁ śikhaṇḍinī। tvaṁ ca rājñi mahatkṛcchraṁ samprāptā varavarṇini ॥5-191-17॥
I am indeed in doubt, and this young girl is Shikhandini. You, O queen, have encountered great difficulty, O beautiful lady.
sā tvaṃ sarvavimokṣāya tattvamākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ। tathā vidadhyāṃ suśroṇi kṛtyasyāsya śucismite ॥ śikhaṇḍini ca mā bhaistvaṃ vidhāsye tatra tattvataḥ ॥5-191-18॥
She, please declare the truth for universal liberation to the one who is asking. Thus, O beautiful-hipped one, I shall perform this duty, O pure-smiled one. O peacock-bannered one, do not fear, I shall truly arrange everything there.
kriyayāhaṃ varārohe vañcitaḥ putradharmataḥ। mayā dāśārṇako rājā vañcitaśca mahīpatiḥ ॥ tadācakṣva mahābhāge vidhāsye tatra yaddhitam ॥5-191-19॥
O beautiful lady, I was deceived from my duty as a son by my actions. The king of the Daśārṇas and the lord of the earth were also deceived by me. O fortunate one, please tell me what is beneficial to do there, and I shall do it.
jānatāpi narendreṇa khyāpanārthaṃ parasya vai। prakāśaṃ coditā devī pratyuvāca mahīpatim ॥5-191-20॥
Even though the king knew, he urged the goddess to proclaim openly about the other, and she replied to the king.
