vāyustataḥ prādurabhūnnīcaiḥ śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ। vinighnaṃstānyanīkāni vidhamamścaiva tadrajaḥ ॥6-1-22॥

(Both armies then, O king, greatly rejoiced for battle, situated in Kurukshetra, prepared like the agitated ocean.)
O King, both armies, filled with great joy, stood ready for battle in Kurukshetra, resembling the turbulent ocean.
तयोस्तु सेनयोरासीदद्भुतः स समागमः। युगान्ते समनुप्राप्ते द्वयोः सागरयोरिव ॥६-१-२४॥
tayostu senayorāsīd adbhutaḥ sa samāgamaḥ। yugānte samanuprāpte dvayoḥ sāgarayoriva ॥6-1-24॥

(But of the two armies, there was a wonderful encounter, like that of the two oceans having arrived at the end of an age.)

शून्यासीत्पृथिवी सर्वा बालवृद्धावशेषिता। तेन सेनासमूहेन समानीतेन कौरवैः ॥६-१-२५॥
śūnyāsīt pṛthivī sarvā bāla-vṛddhāvaśeṣitā। tena senāsamūhena samānītena kauravaiḥ ॥6-1-25॥

(By speech, engaged in battle, our counteraction is only by speech. Having departed from the midst of the battle, he is not to be killed in any way.)
In the battle, we engage through words, and our counteraction is solely verbal. Once someone has left the battlefield, they should not be harmed in any manner.
रथी च रथिना योध्यो गजेन गजधूर्गतः। अश्वेनाश्वी पदातिश्च पदातेनैव भारत ॥६-१-२९॥
rathī ca rathinā yodhyo gajena gajadhūrgataḥ। aśvenāśvī padātiśca padātenaiva bhārata ॥6-1-29॥

(As appropriate, as per strength, as per enthusiasm, as per age, having consulted, should be attacked, not in a trusting manner, not in a confused manner.)
One should act according to appropriateness, strength, enthusiasm, and age, after consultation, and should not attack in a trusting or confused manner.
परेण सह संयुक्तः प्रमत्तो विमुखस्तथा। क्षीणशस्त्रो विवर्मा च न हन्तव्यः कथञ्चन ॥६-१-३१॥
pareṇa saha saṁyuktaḥ pramatto vimukhas tathā। kṣīṇaśastro vivarmā ca na hantavyaḥ kathañcana ॥6-1-31॥

(Joined with another, careless, turned away thus, weaponless, without armor and not to be killed in any way.)
One who is joined with another, careless, turned away, weaponless, and without armor should not be killed in any way.
न सूतेषु न धुर्येषु न च शस्त्रोपनायिषु। न भेरीशङ्खवादेषु प्रहर्तव्यं कथञ्चन ॥६-१-३२॥
na sūteṣu na dhuryeṣu na ca śastropanāyiṣu। na bherīśaṅkhavādeṣu prahartavyaṃ kathaṃcana ॥6-1-32॥
[न (na) - not; सूतेषु (sūteṣu) - in births; न (na) - not; धुर्येषु (dhuryeṣu) - in burdens; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शस्त्रोपनायिषु (śastropanāyiṣu) - in weaponry; न (na) - not; भेरीशङ्खवादेषु (bherīśaṅkhavādeṣu) - in the sounds of drums and conches; प्रहर्तव्यं (prahartavyaṃ) - to be struck; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Not in births, not in burdens, not in weaponry, not in the sounds of drums and conches, should be struck in any way.)

एवं ते समयं कृत्वा कुरुपाण्डवसोमकाः। विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः प्रेक्षमाणाः परस्परम् ॥६-१-३३॥
evaṃ te samayaṃ kṛtvā kurupāṇḍavasomakāḥ। vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmuḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ parasparam ॥6-1-33॥

निविश्य च महात्मानस्ततस्ते पुरुषर्षभाः। हृष्टरूपाः सुमनसो बभूवुः सहसैनिकाः ॥६-१-३४॥
niviśya ca mahātmānastataste puruṣarṣabhāḥ। hṛṣṭarūpāḥ sumanaso babhūvuḥ sahasainikāḥ ॥6-1-34॥
[निविश्य (niviśya) - having settled; च (ca) - and; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; हृष्टरूपाः (hṛṣṭarūpāḥ) - joyful in appearance; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - cheerful-minded; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; सहसैनिकाः (sahasainikāḥ) - with their soldiers;]
(Having settled, the great souls, then they, bulls among men, became joyful in appearance, cheerful-minded with their soldiers.)
