Pancharatra-Ext: Vyasa arrives on the scene, and as Dhritarashtra desires to hear about the war, grants divine vision to Sanjaya. Narrates the various omens showing the impending destruction.

वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानं स रहस्यं ब्रवीदिदम्। शोचन्तमार्तं ध्यायन्तं पुत्राणामनयं तदा ॥६-२-३॥

(O king, whose time has come, your sons and other kings will kill each other in battle, having approached.)
O king, the time has come for your sons and other kings. They will meet in battle and kill each other.
तेषु कालपरीतेषु विनश्यत्सु च भारत। कालपर्यायमाज्ञाय मा स्म शोके मनः कृथाः ॥६-२-५॥

(In those overcome by time and perishing, O Bhārata, knowing the course of time, do not indeed engage your mind in sorrow.)
O Bhārata, as everything is overcome by time and perishes, understand the course of time and do not let your mind dwell in sorrow.
यदि त्विच्छसि सङ्ग्रामे द्रष्टुमेनं विशां पते। चक्षुर्ददानि ते हन्त युद्धमेतन्निशामय ॥६-२-६॥
yadi tvicchasi saṅgrāme draṣṭumenaṃ viśāṃ pate। cakṣurdadāni te hanta yuddhametanniśāmaya ॥6-2-6॥

(If you wish to see this battle, O lord of the people, I give you the eyes; behold this battle, observe.)
If you desire to witness this battle, O lord of the people, I grant you the vision; behold and observe this battle.

na rocare jñātivadhaṃ draṣṭuṃ brahmarṣisattama। yuddhametattvaśeṣeṇa śṛṇuyāṃ tava tejasā ॥6-2-7॥

(I do not desire to see the killing of relatives, O best of the Brahmarshis. May I hear this battle with the remainder by your power.)
I do not wish to witness the slaughter of my kin, O revered sage. Let me hear about this battle's outcome through your divine power.

[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अनिच्छति (anicchati) - does not wish; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - battle; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छति (icchati) - wishes; वराणाम् (varāṇām) - of boons; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; दाता (dātā) - giver; सञ्जयाय (sañjayāya) - to Sañjaya; वरम् (varam) - boon; ददौ (dadau) - gave;]
(In that, he does not wish to see the battle, wishes to hear. The lord, the giver of boons, gave a boon to Sañjaya.)
In that situation, he does not wish to see the battle but desires to hear about it. The lord, who is the giver of boons, granted a boon to Sañjaya.

(This Sanjaya will tell you, O King, about this battle. All of this will be directly in the battle, not indirectly.)
Sanjaya will narrate to you, O King, the events of this battle. Everything will be witnessed directly in the battle, not indirectly.
चक्षुषा सञ्जयो राजन्दिव्येनैष समन्वितः। कथयिष्यति ते युद्धं सर्वज्ञश्च भविष्यति ॥६-२-१०॥
cakṣuṣā sañjayo rājandivyena eṣa samanvitaḥ। kathayiṣyati te yuddhaṃ sarvajñaśca bhaviṣyati ॥6-2-10॥

(By the eye, Sanjaya, O King, endowed with divine vision, will narrate to you the battle and will become all-knowing.)

प्रकाशं वा रहस्यं वा रात्रौ वा यदि वा दिवा। मनसा चिन्तितमपि सर्वं वेत्स्यति सञ्जयः ॥६-२-११॥

(Weapons will not pierce this, fatigue will not trouble this. Gāvalgaṇi will be liberated from this battle of life.)

अहं च कीर्तिमेतेषां कुरूणां भरतर्षभ। पाण्डवानां च सर्वेषां प्रथयिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥६-२-१३॥
ahaṁ ca kīrtimetēṣāṁ kurūṇāṁ bharatarṣabha। pāṇḍavānāṁ ca sarvēṣāṁ prathayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ ॥6-2-13॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; एतेषां (etēṣāṁ) - of these; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - of the Kurus; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṁ) - of the Pandavas; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषां (sarvēṣāṁ) - of all; प्रथयिष्यामि (prathayiṣyāmi) - I will spread; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve;]
(I and the fame of these Kurus, O best of the Bharatas, and of all the Pandavas, I will spread. Do not grieve.)

दिष्टमेतत्पुरा चैव नात्र शोचितुमर्हसि। न चैव शक्यं संयन्तुं यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥६-२-१४॥
diṣṭametatpurā caiva nātra śocitumarhasi। na caiva śakyaṃ saṃyantuṃ yato dharmastato jayaḥ ॥6-2-14॥
[दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - ordained; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरा (purā) - before; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; संयन्तुम् (saṃyantum) - to control; यतः (yataḥ) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; ततः (tataḥ) - there; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(This is ordained from before, and you should not grieve here. Nor is it possible to control, where there is dharma, there is victory.)
This has been destined from the past, and you should not lament over it. It is not possible to control, for where there is righteousness, there is victory.

(Thus having spoken, the blessed one, the great-grandfather of the Kurus, again indeed said to the mighty-armed Dhritarashtra.)
After speaking thus, the revered great-grandfather of the Kurus addressed the mighty-armed Dhritarashtra once more.
इह युद्धे महाराज भविष्यति महान्क्षयः। यथेमानि निमित्तानि भयायाद्योपलक्षये ॥६-२-१६॥
iha yuddhe mahārāja bhaviṣyati mahān kṣayaḥ। yathemāni nimittāni bhayāyādyopalakṣaye ॥6-2-16॥
[इह (iha) - here; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; महान् (mahān) - great; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; यथा (yathā) - as; इमानि (imāni) - these; निमित्तानि (nimittāni) - omens; भयाय (bhayāya) - for fear; अद्य (adya) - today; उपलक्षये (upalakṣaye) - I observe;]
(Here in battle, O great king, there will be great destruction, as I observe these omens for fear today.)

श्येना गृध्राश्च काकाश्च कङ्काश्च सहिता बलैः। सम्पतन्ति वनान्तेषु समवायांश्च कुर्वते ॥६-२-१७॥

(Hawks, vultures, crows, and herons together with forces fly in the forest regions and make assemblies.)

(The twice-born, rejoicing in battle, see very fierce carnivores who will devour the flesh of elephants and horses.)
The Brahmins, delighted by the battle, witness the terrifying carnivores feasting on the flesh of elephants and horses.
खटाखटेति वाशन्तो भैरवं भयवेदिनः। कह्वाः प्रयान्ति मध्येन दक्षिणामभितो दिशम् ॥६-२-१९॥
khaṭākhaṭeti vāśanto bhairavaṁ bhayavedinaḥ। kahvāḥ prayānti madhyena dakṣiṇāmabhito diśam ॥6-2-19॥
[खटाखटेति (khaṭākhaṭeti) - with the sound of 'khaṭā-khaṭa'; वाशन्तः (vāśantaḥ) - shouting; भैरवम् (bhairavam) - Bhairava; भयवेदिनः (bhayavedinaḥ) - fearful; कह्वाः (kahvāḥ) - the Kahvas; प्रयान्ति (prayānti) - go; मध्येन (madhyena) - through the middle; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - south; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - towards; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(With the sound of 'khaṭā-khaṭa', shouting fearfully, the Kahvas go through the middle towards the southern direction.)
The Kahvas, filled with fear, proceed noisily towards the south, making the sound 'khaṭā-khaṭa' as they shout to Bhairava.
उभे पूर्वापरे सन्ध्ये नित्यं पश्यामि भारत। उदयास्तमने सूर्यं कबन्धैः परिवारितम् ॥६-२-२०॥
