हयानां च गजानां च शूराणां चामितौजसाम्। प्रत्यक्षं यन्मया दृष्टं दृष्टं योगबलेन च ॥६-१६-५॥
hayānāṃ ca gajānāṃ ca śūrāṇāṃ cāmitaujasām। pratyakṣaṃ yanmayā dṛṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ yogabalena ca ॥6-16-5॥

व्युत्थितोत्पत्तिविज्ञानमाकाशे च गतिः सदा। शस्त्रैरसङ्गो युद्धेषु वरदानान्महात्मनः ॥६-१६-९॥
vyutthitotpattivijñānam ākāśe ca gatiḥ sadā। śastrair asaṅgo yuddheṣu varadānān mahātmanaḥ ॥6-16-9॥

नातः कार्यतमं मन्ये रणे भीष्मस्य रक्षणात्। हन्याद्गुप्तो ह्यसौ पार्थान्सोमकांश्च ससृञ्जयान् ॥६-१६-१४॥

(And the pure-souled said, "I would not kill Shikhandi. It is heard that this was formerly a woman; therefore, to be avoided in battle by me.")
The pure-hearted one said, "I will not kill Shikhandi, as it is known that he was once a woman; hence, he should be avoided by me in battle."
तस्माद्भीष्मो रक्षितव्यो विशेषेणेति मे मतिः। शिखण्डिनो वधे यत्ताः सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु मामकाः ॥६-१६-१६॥
tasmādbhīṣmo rakṣitavyo viśeṣeṇeti me matiḥ। śikhaṇḍino vadhe yattāḥ sarve tiṣṭhantu māmakāḥ ॥6-16-16॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; रक्षितव्यः (rakṣitavyaḥ) - to be protected; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; शिखण्डिनः (śikhaṇḍinaḥ) - Shikhandi; वधे (vadhe) - in the killing; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - endeavored; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तिष्ठन्तु (tiṣṭhantu) - should remain; मामकाः (māmakāḥ) - my men;]

[वामं (vāmaṃ) - left; चक्रं (cakraṃ) - wheel; युधामन्युः (yudhāmanyuḥ) - Yudhāmanyu; उत्तमौजाः (uttamaujāḥ) - Uttamaujas; च (ca) - and; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - right; गोप्तारौ (goptārau) - protectors; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna; एतौ (etau) - these two; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna; अपि (api) - also; शिखण्डिनः (śikhaṇḍinaḥ) - of Shikhandi;]

संरक्ष्यमाणः पार्थेन भीष्मेण च विवर्जितः। यथा न हन्याद्गाङ्गेयं दुःशासन तथा कुरु ॥६-१६-२०॥
saṁrakṣyamāṇaḥ pārthena bhīṣmeṇa ca vivarjitaḥ। yathā na hanyādgāṅgeyaṁ duḥśāsana tathā kuru ॥6-16-20॥
[संरक्ष्यमाणः (saṁrakṣyamāṇaḥ) - being protected; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Arjuna; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; च (ca) - and; विवर्जितः (vivarjitaḥ) - avoided; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṁ) - Ganga's son; दुःशासन (duḥśāsana) - Dushasana; तथा (tathā) - thus; कुरु (kuru) - do; ६-१६-२० (6-16-20) - 6-16-20;]

ततो रजन्यां व्युष्टायां शब्दः समभवन्महान्। क्रोशतां भूमिपालानां युज्यतां युज्यतामिति ॥६-१६-२१॥
tato rajanyāṃ vyuṣṭāyāṃ śabdaḥ samabhavanmahān। krośatāṃ bhūmipālānāṃ yujyatāṃ yujyatāmiti ॥6-16-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रजन्यां (rajanyāṃ) - in the night; व्युष्टायां (vyuṣṭāyāṃ) - dawned; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; समभवन् (samabhavan) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great; क्रोशतां (krośatāṃ) - shouting; भूमिपालानां (bhūmipālānāṃ) - of the kings; युज्यतां (yujyatāṃ) - be prepared; युज्यताम् (yujyatām) - be prepared; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then, in the night when dawned, a great sound arose of the kings shouting, "Be prepared, be prepared thus.")
As the night ended and dawn broke, a great clamor arose among the kings, shouting, "Prepare yourselves, prepare yourselves."
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः सिंहनादैश्च भारत। हयहेषितशब्दैश्च रथनेमिस्वनैस्तथा ॥६-१६-२२॥

जृम्भमाणं महासिंहं दृष्ट्वा क्षुद्रमृगा यथा। धृष्टद्युम्नमुखाः सर्वे समुद्विविजिरे मुहुः ॥६-१६-४३॥
jṛmbhamāṇaṃ mahāsiṃhaṃ dṛṣṭvā kṣudramṛgā yathā। dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhāḥ sarve samudvivijire muhuḥ ॥6-16-43॥

(As small animals are terrified upon seeing a yawning great lion, all headed by Dhrishtadyumna were repeatedly terrified.)
Upon seeing the great lion yawning, all the warriors led by Dhrishtadyumna were repeatedly filled with fear, just like small animals would be.
एकादशैताः श्रीजुष्टा वाहिन्यस्तव भारत। पाण्डवानां तथा सप्त महापुरुषपालिताः ॥६-१६-४४॥
ekādaśaitāḥ śrījuṣṭā vāhinyastava bhārata। pāṇḍavānāṃ tathā sapta mahāpuruṣapālitāḥ ॥6-16-44॥

O Bharata, these eleven glorious armies of yours and the seven of the Pandavas are protected by great warriors.
उन्मत्तमकरावर्तौ महाग्राहसमाकुलौ। युगान्ते समुपेतौ द्वौ दृश्येते सागराविव ॥६-१६-४५॥
unmattamakarāvartau mahāgrāhasamākulau। yugānte samupetau dvau dṛśyete sāgarāviva ॥6-16-45॥
[उन्मत्त (unmatta) - mad; मकर (makara) - crocodile; आवर्तौ (āvartau) - whirlpools; महाग्राह (mahāgrāha) - great alligators; समाकुलौ (samākulau) - filled with; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of an age; समुपेतौ (samupetau) - approached; द्वौ (dvau) - two; दृश्येते (dṛśyete) - are seen; सागरौ (sāgarau) - oceans; इव (iva) - like;]

नैव नस्तादृशो राजन्दृष्टपूर्वो न च श्रुतः। अनीकानां समेतानां समवायस्तथाविधः ॥६-१६-४६॥
naiva nastādṛśo rājandṛṣṭapūrvo na ca śrutaḥ। anīkānāṃ sametānāṃ samavāyastathāvidhaḥ ॥6-16-46॥
