अर्जुन उवाच॥

Arjuna said:
एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते। ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः ॥६-३४-१॥
evaṁ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṁ paryupāsate। ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṁ teṣāṁ ke yogavittamāḥ ॥6-34-1॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; सततयुक्ता (satatayuktā) - constantly engaged; ये (ye) - who; भक्ताः (bhaktāḥ) - devotees; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - worship; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - the imperishable; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - the unmanifested; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; के (ke) - who; योगवित्तमाः (yogavittamāḥ) - are perfect in knowledge of yoga;]
(Thus, those who are constantly engaged, who worship you, and those who also worship the imperishable, the unmanifested, among them who are perfect in knowledge of yoga?)
Thus, among those who are constantly devoted and worship you, and those who worship the imperishable and unmanifested, who are considered the most knowledgeable in yoga?
श्रीभगवानुवाच॥

(The auspicious Lord said:)
The Blessed Lord spoke:
मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते। श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥६-३४-२॥
mayyāveśya mano ye māṁ nityayuktā upāsate। śraddhayā parayopetāste me yuktatamā matāḥ ॥6-34-2॥
[मयि (mayi) - in me; आवेश्य (āveśya) - having fixed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ये (ye) - who; माम् (mām) - me; नित्ययुक्ताः (nityayuktāḥ) - constantly engaged; उपासते (upāsate) - worship; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; परया (parayā) - transcendental; उपेताः (upetāḥ) - endowed with; ते (te) - they; मे (me) - by me; युक्ततमाः (yuktatamāḥ) - most perfect; मताः (matāḥ) - considered;]
(Those who, having fixed their mind on me, constantly engage in worship, endowed with transcendental faith, are considered by me to be most perfect.)
Those who fix their minds on me and constantly worship me with unwavering faith are considered by me to be the most perfect.
ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते। सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम् ॥६-३४-३॥
ye tv akṣaram anirdeśyam avyaktaṃ paryupāsate। sarvatragama cintyaṃ ca kūṭastham acalaṃ dhruvam ॥6-34-3॥
[ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - imperishable; अनिर्देश्यम् (anirdeśyam) - indefinable; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - unmanifest; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - worship; सर्वत्रगम् (sarvatragam) - all-pervading; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) - inconceivable; च (ca) - and; कूटस्थम् (kūṭastham) - unchanging; अचलम् (acalam) - immovable; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - eternal;]
(Those who worship the imperishable, indefinable, unmanifest, all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, immovable, and eternal.)
But those who worship the imperishable, indefinable, and unmanifest, which is all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, immovable, and eternal, are also on the path of devotion.
संनियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः। ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥६-३४-४॥
saṃniyamyendriyagrāmaṃ sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ। te prāpnuvanti māmeva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ॥6-34-4॥
[संनियम्य (saṃniyamya) - having controlled; इन्द्रियग्रामं (indriyagrāmam) - the group of senses; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; समबुद्धयः (samabuddhayaḥ) - equanimous; ते (te) - they; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahite) - in the welfare of all beings; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged;]
(Having controlled the group of senses, being equanimous everywhere, they attain only me, engaged in the welfare of all beings.)
Those who have controlled their senses and are equanimous everywhere, they reach me, being engaged in the welfare of all beings.
क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम्। अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते ॥६-३४-५॥
kleśo'dhikatarasteṣāmavyaktāsaktacetasām। avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṃ dehavadbhiravāpyate ॥6-34-5॥
[क्लेशः (kleśaḥ) - pain; अधिकतरः (adhikataraḥ) - greater; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् (avyaktāsaktacetasām) - whose minds are attached to the unmanifest; अव्यक्ता (avyaktā) - unmanifest; हि (hi) - indeed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; देहवद्भिः (dehavadbhiḥ) - by the embodied; अवाप्यते (avāpyate) - is attained;]
(Pain is greater for those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest. Indeed, the path to the unmanifest is suffering and is attained by the embodied.)
For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest, the path is fraught with greater pain. Indeed, the journey to the unmanifest is filled with suffering and is only attained by those who are embodied.
ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः। अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते ॥६-३४-६॥
ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparāḥ। ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate ॥6-34-6॥
[ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; मयि (mayi) - in me; संन्यस्य (saṃnyasya) - having renounced; मत्पराः (matparāḥ) - devoted to me; अनन्येन (ananyena) - with undivided; एव (eva) - certainly; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; मां (māṃ) - me; ध्यायन्त (dhyāyanta) - meditating; उपासते (upāsate) - worship;]
(Those who, having renounced all actions in me, are devoted to me, meditate on me with undivided yoga, certainly worship me.)
Those who dedicate all their actions to me, considering me as the supreme goal, and meditate on me with unwavering devotion, truly worship me.
तेषामहं समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात्। भवामि नचिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ॥६-३४-७॥
teṣāmahaṃ samuddhartā mṛtyusaṃsārasāgarāt। bhavāmi nacirātpārtha mayyāveśitacetasām ॥6-34-7॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अहम् (aham) - I; समुद्धर्ता (samuddhartā) - rescuer; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; संसार (saṃsāra) - worldly existence; सागरात् (sāgarāt) - from the ocean; भवामि (bhavāmi) - become; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - soon; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; मयि (mayi) - in me; आवेशित (āveśita) - absorbed; चेतसाम् (cetasām) - of those whose minds;]
(Of them, I am the rescuer from the ocean of death and worldly existence. I become soon, O son of Pritha, for those whose minds are absorbed in me.)
For those whose minds are absorbed in me, O son of Pritha, I quickly become the rescuer from the ocean of death and worldly existence.
मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय। निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः ॥६-३४-८॥
mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ niveśaya। nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṁ na sanśayaḥ ॥6-34-8॥
[मयि (mayi) - in me; एव (eva) - only; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; आधत्स्व (ādhatsva) - fix; मयि (mayi) - in me; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; निवेशय (niveśaya) - place; निवसिष्यसि (nivasiṣyasi) - you shall dwell; मयि (mayi) - in me; एव (eva) - only; अतः (ataḥ) - thereafter; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - above; न (na) - no; संशयः (sanśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Fix your mind only on me, place your intellect in me. You shall dwell in me alone thereafter, no doubt.)
Place your mind and intellect in me alone, and you will surely reside in me thereafter, without any doubt.
अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम्। अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्तुं धनञ्जय ॥६-३४-९॥
atha cittaṁ samādhātuṁ na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram। abhyāsayogena tato mām icchāptuṁ dhanañjaya ॥6-34-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चित्तं (cittaṁ) - mind; समाधातुं (samādhātuṁ) - to concentrate; न (na) - not; शक्नोषि (śaknoṣi) - you are able; मयि (mayi) - in me; स्थिरम् (sthiram) - steadily; अभ्यासयोगेन (abhyāsayogena) - by the practice of yoga; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; इच्छ (iccha) - desire; आप्तुं (āptuṁ) - to obtain; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(Then, if you are not able to concentrate your mind steadily on me, desire to obtain me through the practice of yoga, O Dhananjaya.)
If you cannot fix your mind steadily on me, then seek to reach me through the practice of yoga, O Arjuna.
अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव। मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥६-३४-१०॥
abhyāse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava। madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvansiddhimavāpsyasi ॥6-34-10॥
[अभ्यासे (abhyāse) - in practice; अपि (api) - even; असमर्थः (asamarthaḥ) - incapable; असि (asi) - you are; मत्कर्म (matkarma) - my work; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; भव (bhava) - be; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my sake; अपि (api) - even; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(If you are incapable even in practice, be dedicated to my work. Performing actions for my sake, you will attain perfection.)
If you find yourself unable to practice, then dedicate yourself to my work. By performing actions for my sake, you will achieve perfection.
अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः। सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान् ॥६-३४-११॥
athaitadapy aśakto'si kartuṁ madyogam āśritaḥ। sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṁ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān ॥6-34-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एतत् (etat) - this; अपि (api) - also; अशक्तः (aśaktaḥ) - unable; असि (asi) - are; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; मद् (mad) - my; योगम् (yogam) - yoga; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - resorted; सर्व (sarva) - all; कर्म (karma) - actions; फल (phala) - fruits; त्यागम् (tyāgam) - renunciation; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुरु (kuru) - do; यतात्मवान् (yatātmavān) - self-controlled;]
(Then, if you are unable to do this, resort to my yoga; then, with self-control, renounce the fruits of all actions.)
If you are unable to perform this, then take refuge in my yoga. With self-control, renounce the fruits of all actions.
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते। ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ॥६-३४-१२॥
śreyo hi jñānam abhyāsāj jñānād dhyānaṃ viśiṣyate। dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgas tyāgāc chāntir anantaram ॥6-34-12॥
[श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; हि (hi) - indeed; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; अभ्यासात् (abhyāsāt) - than practice; ज्ञानात् (jñānāt) - than knowledge; ध्यानम् (dhyānam) - meditation; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is superior; ध्यानात् (dhyānāt) - than meditation; कर्मफलत्यागः (karma-phala-tyāgaḥ) - renunciation of the fruits of actions; त्यागात् (tyāgāt) - from renunciation; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - immediately follows;]
(Indeed, knowledge is better than practice; meditation is superior to knowledge; renunciation of the fruits of actions is superior to meditation; from renunciation, peace immediately follows.)
Indeed, knowledge is considered superior to mere practice, meditation surpasses knowledge, and the renunciation of the fruits of actions is greater than meditation. From such renunciation, peace immediately follows.
अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च। निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥६-३४-१३॥
adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca। nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ॥6-34-13॥
[अद्वेष्टा (adveṣṭā) - non-hateful; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - towards all beings; मैत्रः (maitraḥ) - friendly; करुण (karuṇa) - compassionate; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; निर्ममः (nirmamaḥ) - without possessiveness; निरहङ्कारः (nirahaṅkāraḥ) - without ego; समदुःखसुखः (samaduḥkhasukhaḥ) - equanimous in pain and pleasure; क्षमी (kṣamī) - forgiving;]
(Non-hateful towards all beings, friendly, compassionate, indeed, and without possessiveness, without ego, equanimous in pain and pleasure, forgiving.)
One who does not hate any being, who is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego, balanced in pleasure and pain, and forgiving.
सन्तुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः। मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥६-३४-१४॥
santuṣṭaḥ satataṃ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ। mayyarpitamanobuddhiryo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ॥6-34-14॥
[सन्तुष्टः (santuṣṭaḥ) - content; सततं (satataṃ) - always; योगी (yogī) - a yogi; यतात्मा (yatātmā) - self-controlled; दृढनिश्चयः (dṛḍhaniścayaḥ) - firm in determination; मयि (mayi) - in me; अर्पित (arpita) - surrendered; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; यः (yaḥ) - who; मद्भक्तः (madbhaktaḥ) - my devotee; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear;]
(Content, always a yogi, self-controlled, firm in determination, with mind and intellect surrendered to me, who is my devotee, he is dear to me.)
The one who is content, always practicing yoga, self-controlled, firm in determination, with mind and intellect dedicated to me, such a devotee is dear to me.
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः। हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥६-३४-१५॥
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ। harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ ॥6-34-15॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from whom; न (na) - not; उद्विजते (udvijate) - is agitated; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; लोकात् (lokāt) - from the world; न (na) - not; उद्विजते (udvijate) - is agitated; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; हर्ष (harṣa) - joy; अमर्ष (amarṣa) - anger; भय (bhaya) - fear; उद्वेगैः (udvegaiḥ) - by agitation; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - free; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear;]
(From whom the world is not agitated, and who is not agitated by the world, who is free from joy, anger, fear, and agitation, he is dear to me.)
He who does not disturb the world and is not disturbed by the world, who is free from joy, anger, fear, and agitation, is dear to me.
अनपेक्षः शुचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः। सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥६-३४-१६॥
anapekṣaḥ śucir dakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ। sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ॥6-34-16॥
[अनपेक्षः (anapekṣaḥ) - indifferent; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - efficient; उदासीनः (udāsīnaḥ) - neutral; गतव्यथः (gatavyathaḥ) - free from distress; सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी (sarvārambhaparityāgī) - renouncer of all undertakings; यः (yaḥ) - who; मद्भक्तः (madbhaktaḥ) - my devotee; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear;]
(Indifferent, pure, efficient, neutral, free from distress, renouncer of all undertakings, who is my devotee, he is dear to me.)
He who is indifferent, pure, efficient, neutral, free from distress, and a renouncer of all undertakings, such a devotee of mine is dear to me.
यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति। शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान्यः स मे प्रियः ॥६-३४-१७॥
yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati। śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ sa me priyaḥ ॥6-34-17॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; हृष्यति (hṛṣyati) - rejoices; न (na) - not; द्वेष्टि (dveṣṭi) - hates; न (na) - not; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; न (na) - not; काङ्क्षति (kāṅkṣati) - desires; शुभाशुभपरित्यागी (śubhāśubhaparityāgī) - renouncer of good and evil; भक्तिमान् (bhaktimān) - devoted; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear;]
(He who neither rejoices, nor hates, nor grieves, nor desires, who has renounced both good and evil, and is full of devotion, he is dear to me.)
The one who does not rejoice in pleasure, nor hate in pain, who neither laments nor desires, and who has renounced both good and evil actions, is truly devoted and dear to me.
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानावमानयोः। शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥६-३४-१८॥
samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ। śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ ॥6-34-18॥
[समः (samaḥ) - equal; शत्रौ (śatrau) - towards enemy; च (ca) - and; मित्रे (mitre) - towards friend; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; मानावमानयोः (mānāvamānayoḥ) - in honor and dishonor; शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु (śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu) - in cold, heat, happiness, and distress; समः (samaḥ) - equal; सङ्गविवर्जितः (saṅgavivarjitaḥ) - free from attachment;]
(Equal towards enemy and friend, also in honor and dishonor; in cold, heat, happiness, and distress, equal and free from attachment.)
One who is equal towards both enemies and friends, who remains balanced in honor and dishonor, and who is unaffected by cold, heat, happiness, and distress, is free from attachment.
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येन केनचित्। अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नरः ॥६-३४-१९॥
tulyanindāstutirmaunī santuṣṭo yena kenacit। aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhaktimānme priyo naraḥ ॥6-34-19॥
[तुल्य (tulya) - equal; निन्दा (nindā) - blame; स्तुतिः (stutiḥ) - praise; मौनी (maunī) - silent; सन्तुष्टः (santuṣṭaḥ) - content; येन (yena) - by whom; केनचित् (kenacit) - by any means; अनिकेतः (aniketaḥ) - homeless; स्थिरमति: (sthiramatiḥ) - steady-minded; भक्तिमान् (bhaktimān) - devoted; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(A man who is equal in blame and praise, silent, content with anything, homeless, steady-minded, and devoted is dear to me.)
A person who remains unaffected by blame or praise, is silent, content with whatever comes, without a fixed abode, steady in mind, and full of devotion, is dear to me.
ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते। श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः ॥६-३४-२०॥
ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṃ yathoktaṃ paryupāsate। śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ ॥6-34-20॥
[ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; इदम् (idam) - this; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as stated; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - worship; श्रद्दधाना (śraddadhānā) - with faith; मत्परमा (matparamā) - devoted to me; भक्ताः (bhaktāḥ) - devotees; ते (te) - they; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; मे (me) - to me; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear;]
(Those who worship this righteous nectar as stated, with faith, devoted to me, those devotees are extremely dear to me.)
Those devotees who worship this righteous nectar as stated, with faith and devotion to me, are extremely dear to me.
