kathaṁ droṇo maheṣvāsaḥ pāñcālyaścāpi pārṣataḥ। raṇe samīyaturyattau tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥6-49-1॥

(How did Droṇa, the great archer, and the son of Panchala, also the son of Prishata, meet in battle? Tell me that, Sanjaya.)
Sanjaya, tell me how Droṇa, the great archer, and the son of Panchala, who is also the son of Prishata, encountered each other in the battle.
दिष्टमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषादपि सञ्जय। यत्र शान्तनवो भीष्मो नातरद्युधि पाण्डवम् ॥६-४९-२॥
diṣṭameva paraṃ manye pauruṣādapi sañjaya। yatra śāṃtanavo bhīṣmo nātaradyudhi pāṇḍavam ॥6-49-2॥

(Indeed, I think fate is supreme, even more than effort, O Sanjaya. Where Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, did not overcome the Pandava in battle.)
Sanjaya, I believe that fate is ultimately more powerful than human effort. This is evident where Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, could not defeat the Pandava in battle.
भीष्मो हि समरे क्रुद्धो हन्याल्लोकांश्चराचरान्। स कथं पाण्डवं युद्धे नातरत्सञ्जयौजसा ॥६-४९-३॥
bhīṣmo hi samare kruddho hanyāllokāṃścarācarān। sa kathaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ yuddhe nātaratsaṃjayaujasā ॥6-49-3॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; हि (hi) - indeed; समरे (samare) - in battle; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - could slay; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; चराचरान् (carācarān) - moving and non-moving; सः (saḥ) - he; कथम् (katham) - how; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pandava; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; न (na) - not; अतरत् (atarat) - overcome; सञ्जयौजसा (saṃjayaujasā) - by the power of Sanjaya;]
(Indeed, Bhishma, angry in battle, could slay the worlds, both moving and non-moving. How could he not overcome the Pandava in battle by the power of Sanjaya?)
Bhishma, when enraged in battle, could destroy all worlds, both animate and inanimate. How could he not defeat the Pandava in battle with the might of Sanjaya?

शृणु राजन्स्थिरो भूत्वा युद्धमेतत्सुदारुणम्। न शक्यः पाण्डवो जेतुं देवैरपि सवासवैः ॥६-४९-४॥
śṛṇu rājan sthiro bhūtvā yuddham etat sudāruṇam। na śakyaḥ pāṇḍavo jetuṃ devair api savāsavaiḥ ॥6-49-4॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - steady; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; एतत् (etat) - this; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; दैवैः (daivaiḥ) - by gods; अपि (api) - even; सवासवैः (savāsavaiḥ) - with Indra;]
(Listen, O king, having become steady, this battle is very terrible. It is not possible for the Pāṇḍava to conquer, even by the gods with Indra.)
Listen, O king, stand firm and witness this dreadful battle. The Pāṇḍava cannot be defeated, not even by the gods along with Indra.
द्रोणस्तु निशितैर्बाणैर्धृष्टद्युम्नमयोधयत्। सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपातयत् ॥६-४९-५॥
droṇastu niśitairbāṇairdhr̥ṣṭadyumnamayodhayat। sārathiṃ cāsya bhallena rathanīḍādapātayat ॥6-49-5॥
[द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; तु (tu) - but; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; धृष्टद्युम्नम् (dhr̥ṣṭadyumnam) - Dhrishtadyumna; अयोधयत् (ayodhayat) - fought; सारथिम् (sārathim) - the charioteer; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; भल्लेन (bhallena) - with an arrow; रथनीडात् (rathanīḍāt) - from the chariot; अपातयत् (apātayat) - knocked down;]
(But Drona fought Dhrishtadyumna with sharp arrows and knocked down his charioteer from the chariot with an arrow.)
Drona, with his sharp arrows, engaged in battle with Dhrishtadyumna and struck down his charioteer from the chariot with a well-aimed arrow.
तस्याथ चतुरो वाहांश्चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैः। पीडयामास सङ्क्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिष ॥६-४९-६॥
tasyātha caturo vāhāṃścaturbhiḥ sāyakottamaiḥ। pīḍayāmāsa saṅkruddho dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa ॥6-49-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अथ (atha) - then; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; वाहान् (vāhān) - horses; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; सायक (sāyaka) - arrows; उत्तमैः (uttamaiḥ) - excellent; पीडयामास (pīḍayāmāsa) - afflicted; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - enraged; धृष्टद्युम्नस्य (dhṛṣṭadyumnasya) - of Dhrishtadyumna; मारिष (māriṣa) - O lord;]
(Then, enraged, he afflicted his four horses with four excellent arrows, O lord, of Dhrishtadyumna.)

धृष्टद्युम्नस्ततो द्रोणं नवत्या निशितैः शरैः। विव्याध प्रहसन्वीरस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥६-४९-७॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnastato droṇaṃ navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। vivyādha prahasannvīrastiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt ॥6-49-7॥

(Dhṛṣṭadyumna then pierced Droṇa with ninety sharp arrows, smiling, the hero said, "Stay, stay.")

ततः पुनरमेयात्मा भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान्। शरैः प्रच्छादयामास धृष्टद्युम्नममर्षणम् ॥६-४९-८॥
tataḥ punarameyātmā bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān। śaraiḥ pracchādayāmāsa dhṛṣṭadyumnamamarṣaṇam ॥6-49-8॥

(Then again, the immeasurable soul Bharadvaja, glorious, covered the unforgiving Dhrishtadyumna with arrows.)

आददे च शरं घोरं पार्षतस्य वधं प्रति। शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शं मृत्युदण्डमिवापरम् ॥६-४९-९॥
ādade ca śaraṃ ghoraṃ pārṣatasya vadhaṃ prati। śakrāśanisamasparśaṃ mṛtyudaṇḍamivāparam ॥6-49-9॥

(And he took a terrible arrow for the killing of Pārṣata, like another rod of death, similar in touch to Indra's thunderbolt.)
He took a dreadful arrow aimed at killing Pārṣata, which was as potent as Indra's thunderbolt, resembling another rod of death.
हाहाकारो महानासीत्सर्वसैन्यस्य भारत। तमिषुं सन्धितं दृष्ट्वा भारद्वाजेन संयुगे ॥६-४९-१०॥
hāhākāro mahān āsīt sarvasainyasya bhārata। tam iṣuṃ sandhitaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhāradvājena saṃyuge ॥6-49-10॥
[हाहाकारः (hāhākāraḥ) - uproar; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सर्वसैन्यस्य (sarvasainyasya) - of all the army; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; तम् (tam) - that; इषुम् (iṣum) - arrow; सन्धितम् (sandhitam) - fixed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; भारद्वाजेन (bhāradvājena) - by Bharadvaja; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in the battle;]
(There was a great uproar of all the army, O Bharata, seeing that arrow fixed by Bharadvaja in the battle.)
O Bharata, there was a great uproar among all the soldiers when they saw the arrow fixed by Bharadvaja in the battle.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम धृष्टद्युम्नस्य पौरुषम्। यदेकः समरे वीरस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥६-४९-११॥
tatrādbhutamapaśyāma dhṛṣṭadyumnasya pauruṣam। yadekaḥ samare vīrastasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥6-49-11॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अपश्याम (apaśyāma) - we saw; धृष्टद्युम्नस्य (dhṛṣṭadyumnasya) - of Dhṛṣṭadyumna; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - valor; यत् (yat) - that; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; समरे (samare) - in battle; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(There we saw the wonderful valor of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, who alone stood in battle like an immovable mountain.)
There, we witnessed the extraordinary bravery of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, who stood alone in the battle like a steadfast mountain.
तं च दीप्तं शरं घोरमायान्तं मृत्युमात्मनः। चिच्छेद शरवृष्टिं च भारद्वाजे मुमोच ह ॥६-४९-१२॥
taṃ ca dīptaṃ śaraṃ ghoramāyāntaṃ mṛtyumātmanaḥ। ciccheda śaravṛṣṭiṃ ca bhāradvāje mumoca ha ॥6-49-12॥
[तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; दीप्तं (dīptaṃ) - shining; शरं (śaraṃ) - arrow; घोरमायान्तं (ghoramāyāntaṃ) - terrible approaching; मृत्युमात्मनः (mṛtyumātmanaḥ) - death of himself; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; शरवृष्टिं (śaravṛṣṭiṃ) - arrow shower; च (ca) - and; भारद्वाजे (bhāradvāje) - on Bharadvaja; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(And that shining arrow, terrible and approaching as the death of himself, he cut off, and released an arrow shower on Bharadvaja indeed.)
He cut off that shining arrow, which was approaching terribly like his own death, and indeed released a shower of arrows on Bharadvaja.
तत उच्चुक्रुशुः सर्वे पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह। धृष्टद्युम्नेन तत्कर्म कृतं दृष्ट्वा सुदुष्करम् ॥६-४९-१३॥
tata uccukruśuḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha। dhṛṣṭadyumnena tatkarma kṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā suduṣkaram ॥6-49-13॥
[तत (tata) - then; उच्चुक्रुशुः (uccukruśuḥ) - cried out; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Panchalas; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pandavas; सह (saha) - together; धृष्टद्युम्नेन (dhṛṣṭadyumnena) - by Dhrishtadyumna; तत्कर्म (tatkarma) - that act; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
(Then all the Panchalas cried out together with the Pandavas, having seen that act done by Dhrishtadyumna, which was very difficult.)
Upon witnessing the challenging feat accomplished by Dhrishtadyumna, all the Panchalas, along with the Pandavas, cried out in unison.
ततः शक्तिं महावेगां स्वर्णवैडूर्यभूषिताम्। द्रोणस्य निधनाकाङ्क्षी चिक्षेप स पराक्रमी ॥६-४९-१४॥
tataḥ śaktiṃ mahāvegāṃ svarṇavaiḍūryabhūṣitām। droṇasya nidhanākāṅkṣī cikṣepa sa parākramī ॥6-49-14॥

(Then, the valiant one, desiring the death of Drona, hurled the spear with great speed, adorned with gold and cat’s eye gem.)

(Bharadvaja suddenly threw that golden-ornamented spear approaching in three parts in battle, as if smiling.)
Bharadvaja, with a smile, suddenly hurled the golden-adorned spear that was approaching, splitting it into three parts in the battle.
शक्तिं विनिहतां दृष्ट्वा धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान्। ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि द्रोणं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥६-४९-१६॥
śaktiṃ vinihatāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān। vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi droṇaṃ prati janeśvara ॥6-49-16॥

Upon witnessing the fall of power, the valiant Dhṛṣṭadyumna unleashed a barrage of arrows towards Droṇa, O king.
शरवर्षं ततस्तं तु संनिवार्य महायशाः। द्रोणो द्रुपदपुत्रस्य मध्ये चिच्छेद कार्मुकम् ॥६-४९-१७॥
śaravarṣaṃ tatastaṃ tu saṃnivārya mahāyaśāḥ। droṇo drupadaputrasya madhye ciccheda kārmukam ॥6-49-17॥

(Then, having warded off that shower of arrows, the greatly renowned Drona cut off the bow of the son of Drupada in the midst.)

स च्छिन्नधन्वा समरे गदां गुर्वीं महायशाः। द्रोणाय प्रेषयामास गिरिसारमयीं बली ॥६-४९-१८॥
sa chinnadhanvā samare gadāṃ gurvīṃ mahāyaśāḥ। droṇāya preṣayāmāsa girisāramayīṃ balī ॥6-49-18॥

(He, with a broken bow, in battle, sent a heavy mace made of mountain essence to Drona, greatly renowned and strong.)

सा गदा वेगवन्मुक्ता प्रायाद्द्रोणजिघांसया। तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम भारद्वाजस्य विक्रमम् ॥६-४९-१९॥
sā gadā vegavanmuktā prāyāddroṇajighāṁsayā। tatrādbhutamapaśyāma bhāradvājasya vikramam ॥6-49-19॥

लाघवाद्व्यंसयामास गदां हेमविभूषिताम्। व्यंसयित्वा गदां तां च प्रेषयामास पार्षते ॥६-४९-२०॥

[लाघवात् (lāghavāt) - due to lightness; व्यंसयामास (vyaṃsayāmāsa) - swung; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; हेमविभूषिताम् (hemavibhūṣitām) - gold-adorned; व्यंसयित्वा (vyaṃsayitvā) - having swung; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; ताम् (tām) - that; च (ca) - and; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; पार्षते (pārṣate) - to Pārṣata;]
(Due to lightness, he swung the gold-adorned mace. Having swung the mace, he sent it to Pārṣata.)

भल्लान्सुनिशितान्पीतान्स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्शिलाशितान्। ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे ॥६-४९-२१॥

यदेनं शरवर्षेण वारयामास पार्षतम्। न शशाक ततो गन्तुं बलवानपि संयुगे ॥६-४९-३३॥
