मुक्तास्तु रथिभिर्बाणा रुक्मपुङ्खाः सुतेजनाः। संनिपेतुरकुण्ठाग्रा नागेषु च हयेषु च ॥६-४८-६॥

सादितध्वजनागाश्च हतप्रवरवाजिनः। विप्रयातरथानीकाः समपद्यन्त पाण्डवाः ॥६-४८-११॥

अर्जुनस्तु नरव्याघ्रो दृष्ट्वा भीष्मं महारथम्। वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीत्क्रुद्धो याहि यत्र पितामहः ॥६-४८-१२॥
arjunastu naravyāghro dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaṃ mahāratham। vārṣṇeyamabravītkruddho yāhi yatra pitāmahaḥ ॥6-48-12॥

(Arjuna, the tiger among men, having seen Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, said to Krishna angrily, "Go where the grandfather is.")
Arjuna, known as the tiger among men, upon seeing the great warrior Bhishma, angrily instructed Krishna to proceed towards the grandfather.
एष भीष्मः सुसङ्क्रुद्धो वार्ष्णेय मम वाहिनीम्। नाशयिष्यति सुव्यक्तं दुर्योधनहिते रतः ॥६-४८-१३॥
eṣa bhīṣmaḥ susaṅkruddho vārṣṇeya mama vāhinīm। nāśayiṣyati suvyaktaṃ duryodhanahite rataḥ ॥6-48-13॥

(This Bhishma, very angry, O descendant of Vrishni, will clearly destroy my army, engaged for Duryodhana's benefit.)
Bhishma, in his great anger, is determined to destroy my forces for the sake of Duryodhana, O descendant of Vrishni.
एष द्रोणः कृपः शल्यो विकर्णश्च जनार्दन। धार्तराष्ट्राश्च सहिता दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः ॥६-४८-१४॥
eṣa droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyo vikarṇaśca janārdana। dhārtarāṣṭrāśca sahitā duryodhanapurogamāḥ ॥6-48-14॥

पाञ्चालान्निहनिष्यन्ति रक्षिता दृढधन्वना। सोऽहं भीष्मं गमिष्यामि सैन्यहेतोर्जनार्दन ॥६-४८-१५॥
pāñcālānnihaniṣyanti rakṣitā dṛḍhadhanvanā। so'haṃ bhīṣmaṃ gamiṣyāmi sainyahetorjanārdana ॥6-48-15॥

तमब्रवीद्वासुदेवो यत्तो भव धनञ्जय। एष त्वा प्रापये वीर पितामहरथं प्रति ॥६-४८-१६॥

(Vasudeva said to him, "Be prepared, Dhananjaya. This hero will take you towards the grandfather's chariot.")

एवमुक्त्वा ततः शौरी रथं तं लोकविश्रुतम्। प्रापयामास भीष्माय रथं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥६-४८-१७॥
evamuktvā tataḥ śaurī rathaṃ taṃ lokaviśrutam। prāpayāmāsa bhīṣmāya rathaṃ prati janeśvara ॥6-48-17॥

चञ्चद्बहुपताकेन बलाकावर्णवाजिना। समुच्छ्रितमहाभीमनदद्वानरकेतुना ॥ महता मेघनादेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ॥६-४८-१८॥
cañcadbahupatākena balākāvarṇavājinā। samucchritamahābhīmanadadvānaraketunā ॥ mahatā meghanādena rathenādityavarcasā ॥6-48-18॥
[चञ्चत् (cañcat) - fluttering; बहु (bahu) - many; पताकेन (patākena) - with flags; बलाका (balākā) - crane-colored; वर्ण (varṇa) - colored; वाजिना (vājinā) - with horses; समुच्छ्रित (samucchrita) - raised high; महाभीम (mahābhīma) - very fearful; नदत् (nadat) - sounding; वानर (vānara) - monkey; केतुना (ketunā) - with the banner; महता (mahatā) - great; मेघनादेन (meghanādena) - with the sound of clouds; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; आदित्यवर्चसा (ādityavarcasā) - with the splendor of the sun;]
(With fluttering many flags, with crane-colored horses, with a raised high very fearful sounding monkey banner, with a great sound of clouds, with a chariot with the splendor of the sun.)
The chariot, adorned with fluttering flags and drawn by crane-colored horses, bore a monkey banner raised high, emitting a fearful sound. It moved with the great sound of clouds and shone with the splendor of the sun.
विनिघ्नन्कौरवानीकं शूरसेनांश्च पाण्डवः। आयाच्छरान्नुदञ्शीघ्रं सुहृच्छोषविनाशनः ॥६-४८-१९॥
vinighnankauravānīkaṃ śūrasenāṃśca pāṇḍavaḥ। āyāccharānnudañśīghraṃ suhṛcchoṣavināśanaḥ ॥6-48-19॥
[विनिघ्नन् (vinighnan) - destroying; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava; अनीकं (anīkaṃ) - army; शूरसेनान् (śūrasenān) - Shurasenas; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pandava; आयात् (āyāt) - came; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; नुदन् (nudan) - driving away; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; क्षोष (kṣoṣa) - distress; विनाशनः (vināśanaḥ) - destroyer;]
(The Pandava, destroying the Kaurava army and the Shurasenas, came quickly, driving away the arrows, as the destroyer of the distress of friends.)

तमापतन्तं वेगेन प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम्। त्रासयानं रणे शूरान्पातयन्तं च सायकैः ॥६-४८-२०॥

(In battle, it is not possible to conquer these two excited great warriors, even with gods, demons, Gandharvas, and worlds in any way.)

(This battle, wonderful and very marvelous in the worlds, such battles will never occur.)

(In the same way, even the gods would find it difficult to conquer Pāṇḍava in battle. Bhīṣma, the wielder of the bow, would not be able to conquer him in battle.)
Similarly, even the gods find it hard to defeat Pāṇḍava in battle. Bhīṣma, the great archer, would not be able to overcome him in combat.
इति स्म वाचः श्रूयन्ते प्रोच्चरन्त्यस्ततस्ततः। गाङ्गेयार्जुनयोः सङ्ख्ये स्तवयुक्ता विशां पते ॥६-४८-६७॥

(Thus, indeed, words are heard, uttering loudly from here and there, of Ganga's son and Arjuna in the battle, filled with praise, O lord of men.)

त्वदीयास्तु ततो योधाः पाण्डवेयाश्च भारत। अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुस्तयोस्तत्र पराक्रमे ॥६-४८-६८॥
tvadīyāstu tato yodhāḥ pāṇḍaveyāśca bhārata। anyonyaṃ samare jaghnustayostatra parākrame ॥6-48-68॥

(With sharp edges, thus with swords, with pure axes, with arrows and others, with many weapons of various kinds in battle, the heroes of both armies cut down each other.)
