tathā pravṛtte saṅgrāme nivṛtte ca suśarmaṇi। prabhagneṣu ca vīreṣu pāṇḍavena mahātmanā ॥6-78-1॥

क्षुभ्यमाणे बले तूर्णं सागरप्रतिमे तव। प्रत्युद्याते च गाङ्गेये त्वरितं विजयं प्रति ॥६-७८-२॥

(When your army, like the ocean, is agitated and advancing, the son of Ganga swiftly moves towards victory.)

दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनो राजन्रणे पार्थस्य विक्रमम्। त्वरमाणः समभ्येत्य सर्वांस्तानब्रवीन्नृपान् ॥६-७८-३॥

(Having seen the prowess of Partha in battle, Duryodhana, hastily approaching, said to all those kings.)
Upon witnessing Partha's valor in the battlefield, King Duryodhana quickly approached and addressed all the assembled kings.
तेषां च प्रमुखे शूरं सुशर्माणं महाबलम्। मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य भृशं संहर्षयन्वचः ॥६-७८-४॥
teṣāṃ ca pramukhe śūraṃ suśarmāṇaṃ mahābalam। madhye sarvasya sainyasya bhṛśaṃ saṃharṣayanvacaḥ ॥6-78-4॥

(Of them, at the front, the heroic and mighty Suśarman, in the midst of all the army, greatly exhilarating words.)
At the forefront of their group stood the heroic and mighty Suśarman, whose words greatly exhilarated the entire army.
एष भीष्मः शान्तनवो योद्धुकामो धनञ्जयम्। सर्वात्मना कुरुश्रेष्ठस्त्यक्त्वा जीवितमात्मनः ॥६-७८-५॥
eṣa bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo yoddhukāmo dhanañjayam। sarvātmanā kuruśreṣṭhastyaktvā jīvitamātmanaḥ ॥6-78-5॥

(This Bhishma, son of Shantanu, desiring to fight Arjuna, with all his being, best of the Kurus, having abandoned his own life.)
Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, fully committed and the best among the Kurus, is ready to fight Arjuna, having renounced his own life.
तं प्रयान्तं परानीकं सर्वसैन्येन भारतम्। संयत्ताः समरे सर्वे पालयध्वं पितामहम् ॥६-७८-६॥

As he proceeded towards the enemy forces, all the soldiers, O Bharata, were prepared in battle to protect the grandfather.
बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा तु तान्यनीकानि सर्वशः। नरेन्द्राणां महाराज समाजग्मुः पितामहम् ॥६-७८-७॥

महाश्वेताश्वयुक्तेन भीमवानरकेतुना। महता मेघनादेन रथेनाति विराजत ॥६-७८-९॥

समरे सर्वसैन्यानामुपयातं धनञ्जयम्। अभवत्तुमुलो नादो भयाद्दृष्ट्वा किरीटिनम् ॥६-७८-१०॥
samare sarvasainyānāmupayātaṃ dhanañjayam। abhavattumulo nādo bhayāddṛṣṭvā kirīṭinam ॥6-78-10॥

(In the battle, when Dhananjaya arrived, there was a tumultuous sound from all armies, out of fear, seeing the crowned one.)
As Dhananjaya entered the battlefield, a tumultuous sound arose from all the armies, struck by fear at the sight of the crowned warrior.
अभीशुहस्तं कृष्णं च दृष्ट्वादित्यमिवापरम्। मध्यंदिनगतं सङ्ख्ये न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥६-७८-११॥
abhīśuhastaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā adityam iva aparam। madhyandinagataṃ saṅkhye na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum ॥6-78-11॥
[अभीशुहस्तं (abhīśuhastaṃ) - with a mighty weapon in hand; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇaṃ) - Krishna; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun; इव (iva) - like; अपरम् (aparam) - another; मध्यंदिनगतं (madhyandinagataṃ) - at midday; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; न (na) - not; शेकुः (śekuḥ) - could; प्रतिवीक्षितुम् (prativīkṣitum) - to look at;]
(With a mighty weapon in hand, having seen Krishna like another sun at midday in the battle, they could not look at him.)
Seeing Krishna with a powerful weapon in his hand, appearing like another sun at midday on the battlefield, they were unable to gaze upon him.
तथा शान्तनवं भीष्मं श्वेताश्वं श्वेतकार्मुकम्। न शेकुः पाण्डवा द्रष्टुं श्वेतग्रहमिवोदितम् ॥६-७८-१२॥
tathā śāntanavaṃ bhīṣmaṃ śvetāśvaṃ śvetakārmukam। na śekuḥ pāṇḍavā draṣṭuṃ śvetagrahamivoditam ॥6-78-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शान्तनवं (śāntanavaṃ) - son of Śantanu; भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṃ) - Bhīṣma; श्वेताश्वं (śvetāśvaṃ) - with white horses; श्वेतकार्मुकम् (śvetakārmukam) - with a white bow; न (na) - not; शेकुः (śekuḥ) - were able; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; श्वेतग्रहम् (śvetagraham) - white planet; इव (iva) - like; उदितम् (uditam) - risen;]
(Thus, the Pāṇḍavas were not able to see Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, with white horses and a white bow, like a risen white planet.)
The Pāṇḍavas could not behold Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, who appeared with white horses and a white bow, resembling a bright white planet that had risen.
स सर्वतः परिवृतस्त्रिगर्तैः सुमहात्मभिः। भ्रातृभिस्तव पुत्रैश्च तथान्यैश्च महारथैः ॥६-७८-१३॥
saḥ sarvataḥ parivṛtastrigartaiḥ sumahātmabhiḥ। bhrātṛbhistava putraiśca tathānyaiśca mahārathaiḥ ॥6-78-13॥

(He was surrounded from all sides by the Trigartas, the great souls, by brothers, your sons, and also by other great charioteers.)

भारद्वाजस्तु समरे मत्स्यं विव्याध पत्रिणा। ध्वजं चास्य शरेणाजौ धनुश्चैकेन चिच्छिदे ॥६-७८-१४॥
bhāradvājastu samare matsyaṃ vivyādha patriṇā। dhvajaṃ cāsya śareṇājau dhanuścaikena cicchide ॥6-78-14॥

(Having discarded the broken bow, Virata, the commander of the army, swiftly took another strong bow capable of bearing weight and arrows blazing like serpent-like serpents.)

(Droṇa killed his horses with eight curved-jointed arrows, O best of the Bharatas, and the charioteer with one feathered arrow.)
Droṇa, with his skillful archery, took down the horses using eight specially crafted arrows and struck the charioteer with a single precise shot, O esteemed Bharata.
स हताश्वादवप्लुत्य स्यन्दनाद्धतसारथिः। आरुरोह रथं तूर्णं शङ्खस्य रथिनां वरः ॥६-७८-१८॥
sa hatāśvādavaplutya syandanāddhatasārathiḥ। āruroha rathaṃ tūrṇaṃ śaṅkhasya rathināṃ varaḥ ॥6-78-18॥
[स (sa) - he; हताश्वात् (hatāśvāt) - from the killed horses; अवप्लुत्य (avaplutya) - having jumped down; स्यन्दनात् (syandanāt) - from the chariot; हतसारथिः (hatasārathiḥ) - whose charioteer was killed; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; रथं (rathaṃ) - the chariot; तूर्णं (tūrṇaṃ) - quickly; शङ्खस्य (śaṅkhasya) - of Shankha; रथिनां (rathināṃ) - of charioteers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(He, having jumped down from the chariot with killed horses and whose charioteer was killed, quickly ascended the chariot of Shankha, the best of charioteers.)

(Then indeed, those two, father and son, standing on the chariot, forcefully warded off Bharadvaja with a great shower of arrows.)

भारद्वाजस्ततः क्रुद्धः शरमाशीविषोपमम्। चिक्षेप समरे तूर्णं शङ्खं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥६-७८-२०॥

(From the destroyed horses, but quickly from the chariot, he went to the chariot of Vṛṣaka. O great king, while your son was watching, of your brother-in-law.)

भीमसेनोऽपि सङ्क्रुद्धस्तव सैन्यमुपाद्रवत्। निजघान च सङ्क्रुद्धो दण्डपाणिरिवान्तकः ॥६-७८-५७॥
bhīmaseno'pi saṅkruddhastava sainyamupādravat। nijaghāna ca saṅkruddho daṇḍapāṇirivāntakaḥ ॥6-78-57॥
