abhimanyu rathodāraḥ piśaṅgais turagottamaiḥ। abhidudrāva tejasvī duryodhanabalaṃ mahat॥ vikirañ śaravarṣāṇi vāridhārā ivāmbudaḥ॥6-96-1॥

(Abhimanyu, the great charioteer with tawny excellent horses, charged brilliantly at Duryodhana's great army, scattering showers of arrows like streams of water from a cloud.)
Abhimanyu, known for his prowess, drove his chariot drawn by excellent tawny horses into Duryodhana's vast army, releasing a torrent of arrows akin to rain from a cloud.
न शेकुः समरे क्रुद्धं सौभद्रमरिसूदनम्। शस्त्रौघिणं गाहमानं सेनासागरमक्षयम् ॥ निवारयितुमप्याजौ त्वदीयाः कुरुपुङ्गवाः ॥६-९६-२॥

तेन मुक्ता रणे राजञ्शराः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः। क्षत्रियाननयञ्शूरान्प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् ॥६-९६-३॥
tena muktā raṇe rājañcharāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ। kṣatriyānanayañśūrānpretarājaniveśanam ॥6-96-3॥

(By him, O king, the arrows released in battle, destroyers of enemies, led the Kshatriya heroes to the abode of the king of the dead.)
The arrows released by him in the battle, O king, were so powerful that they destroyed the enemies and led the brave Kshatriyas to the abode of Yama, the god of death.
यमदण्डोपमान्घोराञ्ज्वलनाशीविषोपमान्। सौभद्रः समरे क्रुद्धः प्रेषयामास सायकान् ॥६-९६-४॥
yamadaṇḍopamānghorāñjvalanāśīviṣopamān। saubhadraḥ samare kruddhaḥ preṣayāmāsa sāyakān ॥6-96-4॥
[यमदण्डोपमान् (yamadaṇḍopamān) - like the rod of Yama; घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible; ज्वलन (jvalana) - fire; शीविषोपमान् (śīviṣopamān) - like poisonous snakes; सौभद्रः (saubhadraḥ) - Saubhadra; समरे (samare) - in battle; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - dispatched; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows;]
(Saubhadra, angry in battle, dispatched arrows like the rod of Yama, terrible like fire, and like poisonous snakes.)
In the heat of battle, the enraged Saubhadra unleashed arrows that were as dreadful as the rod of Yama, blazing like fire, and akin to venomous serpents.
रथिनं च रथात्तूर्णं हयपृष्ठाच्च सादिनम्। गजारोहांश्च सगजान्पातयामास फाल्गुनिः ॥६-९६-५॥
rathinaṁ ca rathāttūrṇaṁ hayapṛṣṭhācca sādinam। gajarohāṁśca sagajān pātayāmāsa phālghuniḥ ॥6-96-5॥
[रथिनम् (rathinam) - charioteer; च (ca) - and; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; हयपृष्ठात् (hayapṛṣṭhāt) - from the horse's back; च (ca) - and; सादिनम् (sādinam) - rider; गजारोहान् (gajarohān) - elephant riders; च (ca) - and; सगजान् (sagajān) - with elephants; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - caused to fall; फाल्गुनिः (phālghuniḥ) - Arjuna;]
(Arjuna caused the charioteer to quickly fall from the chariot, the rider from the horse's back, and the elephant riders with elephants.)

तस्य तत्कुर्वतः कर्म महत्सङ्ख्येऽद्भुतं नृपाः। पूजयां चक्रिरे हृष्टाः प्रशशंसुश्च फाल्गुनिम् ॥६-९६-६॥
tasya tatkurvataḥ karma mahatsaṅkhye'dbhutaṃ nṛpāḥ। pūjayāṃ cakrire hṛṣṭāḥ praśaśaṃsuśca phālgunim ॥6-96-6॥

(The kings, doing that action in the great battle, were wonderful. They joyfully worshipped and praised Arjuna.)
The kings, witnessing the remarkable deeds of Arjuna in the great battle, were filled with joy and admiration. They honored and praised him wholeheartedly.
तान्यनीकानि सौभद्रो द्रावयन्बह्वशोभत। तूलराशिमिवाधूय मारुतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥६-९६-७॥
tāny anīkāni saubhadro drāvayan bahvaśobhata। tūlarāśim ivādhūya mārutaḥ sarvatodiśam ॥6-96-7॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - armies; सौभद्रः (saubhadraḥ) - Saubhadra (son of Subhadra); द्रावयन् (drāvayan) - driving away; बहु (bahu) - much; अशोभत (aśobhata) - shone; तूलराशिम् (tūlarāśim) - cotton heap; इव (iva) - like; आधूय (ādhūya) - shaking; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - wind; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; दिशम् (diśam) - directions;]
(Saubhadra, driving away those armies, shone much like the wind shaking a heap of cotton from all sides.)
Saubhadra, the son of Subhadra, drove away the armies, shining brilliantly like the wind dispersing a heap of cotton in all directions.
तेन विद्राव्यमाणानि तव सैन्यानि भारत। त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्के मग्ना इव द्विपाः ॥६-९६-८॥
tena vidrāvyamāṇāni tava sainyāni bhārata। trātāraṃ nādhyagacchanta paṅke magnā iva dvipāḥ ॥6-96-8॥

(By him, your armies, O Bharata, being scattered, did not find a protector, like elephants immersed in the mud.)
O Bharata, your armies, being scattered by him, could not find a protector, just like elephants stuck in the mud.
विद्राव्य सर्वसैन्यानि तावकानि नरोत्तमः। अभिमन्युः स्थितो राजन्विधूमोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥६-९६-९॥
vidrāvya sarvasainyāni tāvakāni narottamaḥ। abhimanyuḥ sthito rājanvidhūmo'gniriva jvalan ॥6-96-9॥

(Having scattered all your armies, O best of men, Abhimanyu stood blazing like a smokeless fire, O king.)

न चैनं तावकाः सर्वे विषेहुररिघातिनम्। प्रदीप्तं पावकं यद्वत्पतङ्गाः कालचोदिताः ॥६-९६-१०॥
na cainaṃ tāvakāḥ sarve viṣehurarighātinam। pradīptaṃ pāvakaṃ yadvatpataṅgāḥ kālacoditāḥ ॥6-96-10॥

(Not all your men could withstand the enemy-slayer, like moths driven by time towards a blazing fire.)
None of your warriors could withstand the enemy-slayer, just as moths are inevitably drawn to a blazing fire by the force of time.
प्रहरन्सर्वशत्रुभ्यः पाण्डवानां महारथः। अदृश्यत महेष्वासः सवज्र इव वज्रभृत् ॥६-९६-११॥
praharansarvaśatrubhyaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathaḥ। adṛśyata maheṣvāsaḥ savajra iva vajrabhṛt ॥6-96-11॥

हेमपृष्ठं धनुश्चास्य ददृशे चरतो दिशः। तोयदेषु यथा राजन्भ्राजमानाः शतह्वदाः ॥६-९६-१२॥

(A gold-backed bow of his was seen moving in the directions, like hundred-rayed shining among clouds, O king.)

शराश्च निशिताः पीता निश्चरन्ति स्म संयुगे। वनात्फुल्लद्रुमाद्राजन्भ्रमराणामिव व्रजाः ॥६-९६-१३॥
śarāśca niśitāḥ pītā niścaranti sma saṃyuge। vanātphulladrumādrājanbhramarāṇāmiva vrajāḥ ॥6-96-13॥

(Arrows, sharp and drunk, indeed move in battle, like swarms of bees from the forest of blossoming trees, O king.)
O king, the sharp arrows, as if drunk, moved in the battle like swarms of bees emerging from a forest of blossoming trees.
तथैव चरतस्तस्य सौभद्रस्य महात्मनः। रथेन मेघघोषेण ददृशुर्नान्तरं जनाः ॥६-९६-१४॥
tathaiva caratas tasya saubhadrasya mahātmanaḥ। rathena meghaghoṣeṇa dadṛśur nāntaraṃ janāḥ ॥6-96-14॥

मोहयित्वा कृपं द्रोणं द्रौणिं च स बृहद्बलम्। सैन्धवं च महेष्वासं व्यचरल्लघु सुष्ठु च ॥६-९६-१५॥
mohayitvā kṛpaṃ droṇaṃ drauṇiṃ ca sa bṛhadbalam। saindhavaṃ ca maheṣvāsaṃ vyacarallaghu suṣṭhu ca ॥6-96-15॥

(Having bewildered Kṛpa, Droṇa, Aśvatthāmā, and Bṛhadbala, he moved swiftly and skillfully with Jayadratha, the great archer.)

(We see indeed his bow, O noble one, circularly arranged, like the sun's orb, shining, your army.)
O noble one, we see his bow circularly arranged, resembling the sun's orb, shining brilliantly, as your army advances.
तं दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाः शूराः प्रतपन्तं शरार्चिभिः। द्विफल्गुनमिमं लोकं मेनिरे तस्य कर्मभिः ॥६-९६-१७॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāḥ śūrāḥ pratapantaṃ śarārcibhiḥ। dviphalgunamimaṃ lokaṃ menire tasya karmabhiḥ ॥6-96-17॥

(Having seen him, the warrior heroes, shining with arrow flames, considered this world to be Arjuna's by his deeds.)
Upon witnessing him, the valiant warriors, radiant with the flames of arrows, perceived this world as belonging to Arjuna due to his actions.
तेनार्दिता महाराज भारती सा महाचमूः। बभ्राम तत्र तत्रैव योषिन्मदवशादिव ॥६-९६-१८॥
tenārditā mahārāja bhāratī sā mahācamūḥ। babhrāma tatra tatraiva yoṣinmadavaśādiva ॥6-96-18॥

(Afflicted by him, O great king, that great army wandered here and there like a woman under the influence of intoxication.)
O great king, afflicted by him, that great army wandered aimlessly, much like a woman under the influence of intoxication.
द्रावयित्वा च तत्सैन्यं कम्पयित्वा महारथान्। नन्दयामास सुहृदो मयं जित्वेव वासवः ॥६-९६-१९॥
drāvayitvā ca tatsainyaṃ kampayitvā mahārathān। nandayāmāsa suhṛdo mayaṃ jitveva vāsavaḥ ॥6-96-19॥

(Having scattered that army and shaken the great charioteers, he made his friends happy, like Indra having conquered Maya.)
After scattering the enemy forces and shaking the great warriors, he brought joy to his friends, just as Indra did after defeating Maya.
तेन विद्राव्यमाणानि तव सैन्यानि संयुगे। चक्रुरार्तस्वरं घोरं पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् ॥६-९६-२०॥
tena vidrāvyamāṇāni tava sainyāni saṃyuge। cakrurārtasvaraṃ ghoraṃ parjanyaninadopamam ॥6-96-20॥

(By him, your armies being scattered in battle made a terrible distressed sound like the roar of clouds.)
In the battle, as your armies were scattered by him, they let out a terrible cry, resembling the roar of thunderous clouds.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तव सैन्यस्य मारिष। मारुतोद्धूतवेगस्य समुद्रस्येव पर्वणि ॥ दुर्योधनस्तदा राजा आर्श्यशृङ्गिमभाषत ॥६-९६-२१॥
taṁ śrutvā ninadaṁ ghoraṁ tava sainyasya māriṣa। mārutoddhūtavegasya samudrasyeva parvaṇi ॥ duryodhanastadā rājā ārśyaśṛṅgimabhāṣata ॥6-96-21॥

(Having heard the terrible sound of your army, O great one, like the wind-agitated speed of the ocean during full moon, then King Duryodhana spoke to Arshyashringa.)

(Having regained consciousness, then, with anger doubled, he cut off their banners and bows with arrows.)

त्वरमाणश्च सङ्क्रुद्धो हयांस्तेषां महात्मनाम्। जघान राक्षसः क्रुद्धः सारथींश्च महाबलः ॥६-९६-४५॥
tvaramāṇaśca saṅkruddho hayāṃsteṣāṃ mahātmanām। jaghāna rākṣasaḥ kruddhaḥ sārathīṃśca mahābalaḥ ॥6-96-45॥

तानर्दितान्रणे तेन राक्षसेन दुरात्मना। दृष्ट्वार्जुनसुतः सङ्ख्ये राक्षसं समुपाद्रवत् ॥६-९६-४८॥
tānarditān raṇe tena rākṣasena durātmanā। dṛṣṭvā arjuna-sutaḥ saṅkhye rākṣasaṃ samupādravat ॥6-96-48॥

(Of them, a battle occurred like that between Vritra and Indra. All your men and the Pandavas, the great warriors, saw.)
A battle ensued between the two, reminiscent of the legendary conflict between Vritra and Indra. All the warriors, both your men and the Pandavas, witnessed it.
तौ समेतौ महायुद्धे क्रोधदीप्तौ परस्परम्। महाबलौ महाराज क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनौ ॥ परस्परमवेक्षेतां कालानलसमौ युधि ॥६-९६-५०॥
tau sametau mahāyuddhe krodhadīptau parasparam। mahābalau mahārāja krodhasaṁraktalocanau ॥ parasparamavekṣetāṁ kālānalasamau yudhi ॥6-96-50॥

(They both, having met in the great battle, inflamed with anger, mighty, O great king, with eyes red with anger, looked at each other like the fire of time in battle.)

तयोः समागमो घोरो बभूव कटुकोदयः। यथा देवासुरे युद्धे शक्रशम्बरयोरिव ॥६-९६-५१॥
tayoḥ samāgamo ghoḥro babhūva kaṭukodayaḥ। yathā devāsure yuddhe śakraśambarayoriva ॥6-96-51॥
