निर्वेदं परमं गत्वा विनिन्द्य परवाच्यताम्। दीर्घं दध्यौ शान्तनवो योद्धुकामोऽर्जुनं रणे ॥६-९५-३॥

The son of Śāntanu, having reached a state of supreme dispassion and disregarding the criticisms of others, contemplated for a long time, eager to engage Arjuna in battle.
इङ्गितेन तु तज्ज्ञात्वा गाङ्गेयेन विचिन्तितम्। दुर्योधनो महाराज दुःशासनमचोदयत् ॥६-९५-४॥

Understanding the gesture, Bhishma, the son of Ganga, realized the situation. King Duryodhana then instructed Duhshasana.
दुःशासन रथास्तूर्णं युज्यन्तां भीष्मरक्षिणः। द्वात्रिंशत्त्वमनीकानि सर्वाण्येवाभिचोदय ॥६-९५-५॥

तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये भीष्मस्यैवाभिरक्षणम्। स नो गुप्तः सुखाय स्याद्धन्यात्पार्थांश्च संयुगे ॥६-९५-७॥
tatra kāryamahaṃ manye bhīṣmasyaivābhirakṣaṇam। sa no guptaḥ sukhāya syāddhanyātpārthāṃśca saṃyuge ॥6-95-7॥

(There, I think the duty is only the protection of Bhishma. He, being protected, may bring us happiness by killing the sons of Pritha in battle.)
I believe that our primary duty here is to ensure the protection of Bhishma. If he is safeguarded, he might bring us victory and happiness by defeating the sons of Pritha in the battle.
अब्रवीच्च विशुद्धात्मा नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम्। स्त्रीपूर्वको ह्यसौ जातस्तस्माद्वर्ज्यो रणे मया ॥६-९५-८॥
abravīcca viśuddhātmā nāhaṃ hanyāṃ śikhaṇḍinam। strīpūrvako hyasau jātastasmādvarjyo raṇe mayā ॥6-95-8॥

(And the pure-souled said, "I would not kill Shikhandi. He was formerly a woman, therefore, he is to be avoided by me in battle.")
The pure-hearted one declared, "I shall not slay Shikhandi, for he was born a woman and thus should be avoided by me in battle."
लोकस्तद्वेद यदहं पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया। राज्यं स्फीतं महाबाहो स्त्रियश्च त्यक्तवान्पुरा ॥६-९५-९॥
lokastadveda yadahaṃ pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā। rājyaṃ sphītaṃ mahābāho striyaśca tyaktavānpurā ॥6-95-9॥

(The people know that I, with the desire to please my father, have formerly abandoned the prosperous kingdom and women, O mighty-armed.)
The people are aware that in order to please my father, I had once given up the prosperous kingdom and the company of women, O mighty-armed one.
नैव चाहं स्त्रियं जातु न स्त्रीपूर्वं कथञ्चन। हन्यां युधि नरश्रेष्ठ सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६-९५-१०॥
naiva cāhaṃ striyaṃ jātu na strīpūrvaṃ kathaṃcana। hanyāṃ yudhi naraśreṣṭha satyametadbravīmi te ॥6-95-10॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; जातु (jātu) - ever; न (na) - not; स्त्रीपूर्वम् (strīpūrvam) - before being a woman; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; हन्याम् (hanyām) - I would kill; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(Not indeed I ever was a woman, nor before being a woman in any way. I would kill in battle, O best of men, this truth I speak to you.)

अयं स्त्रीपूर्वको राजञ्शिखण्डी यदि ते श्रुतः। उद्योगे कथितं यत्तत्तथा जाता शिखण्डिनी ॥६-९५-११॥
ayaṁ strīpūrvako rājañśikhaṇḍī yadi te śrutaḥ। udyoge kathitaṁ yattattathā jātā śikhaṇḍinī ॥6-95-11॥

कन्या भूत्वा पुमाञ्जातः स च योत्स्यति भारत। तस्याहं प्रमुखे बाणान्न मुञ्चेयं कथञ्चन ॥६-९५-१२॥
kanyā bhūtvā pumāñjātaḥ sa ca yotsyati bhārata। tasyāhaṃ pramukhe bāṇānna muñceyaṃ kathaṃcana ॥6-95-12॥
[कन्या (kanyā) - girl; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; पुमान् (pumān) - man; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; योत्स्यति (yotsyati) - will fight; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तस्य (tasya) - his; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in front; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; न (na) - not; मुञ्चेयं (muñceyaṃ) - will release; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Having become a girl, a man is born and he will fight, O Bhārata. I will not release arrows in front of him in any way.)
A man, once transformed from a girl, will engage in battle, O Bhārata. I shall not release my arrows in front of him under any circumstances.
युद्धे तु क्षत्रियांस्तात पाण्डवानां जयैषिणः। सर्वानन्यान्हनिष्यामि सम्प्राप्तान्बाणगोचरान् ॥६-९५-१३॥
yuddhe tu kṣatriyāṃstāta pāṇḍavānāṃ jayaiṣiṇaḥ। sarvānanyānghaniṣyāmi samprāptānbāṇagocarān ॥6-95-13॥
[युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; तु (tu) - but; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - the warriors; तात (tāta) - O father; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; जयैषिणः (jayaiṣiṇaḥ) - desiring victory; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will slay; सम्प्राप्तान् (samprāptān) - who have come; बाणगोचरान् (bāṇagocarān) - within the range of arrows;]
(In battle, O father, I will slay all other warriors of the Pandavas who have come within the range of arrows, desiring victory.)

(Thus, O best of the Bharatas, the son of Ganga, the knower of scriptures, said to me: There, with all my heart, I think of Bhishma's protection indeed.)
Thus, the son of Ganga, Bhishma, who is well-versed in scriptures, addressed me, the best of the Bharatas, saying that he wholeheartedly believes in Bhishma's protection.
अरक्ष्यमाणं हि वृको हन्यात्सिंहं महावने। मा वृकेणेव शार्दूलं घातयेम शिखण्डिना ॥६-९५-१५॥
arakṣyamāṇaṃ hi vṛko hanyātsiṃhaṃ mahāvane। mā vṛkeṇeva śārdūlaṃ ghātayema śikhaṇḍinā ॥6-95-15॥

(Indeed, an unprotected lion would be killed by a wolf in the great forest. Let us not cause the tiger to be killed by the archer like the wolf.)

मातुलः शकुनिः शल्यः कृपो द्रोणो विविंशतिः। यत्ता रक्षन्तु गाङ्गेयं तस्मिन्गुप्ते ध्रुवो जयः ॥६-९५-१६॥
mātulaḥ śakuniḥ śalyaḥ kṛpo droṇo viviṁśatiḥ। yattā rakṣantu gāṅgeyaṁ tasmin gupte dhruvo jayaḥ ॥6-95-16॥
[मातुलः (mātulaḥ) - maternal uncle; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Shakuni; शल्यः (śalyaḥ) - Shalya; कृपो (kṛpo) - Kripa; द्रोणो (droṇo) - Drona; विविंशतिः (viviṁśatiḥ) - Vivimshati; यत्ता (yattā) - attentive; रक्षन्तु (rakṣantu) - protect; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṁ) - son of Ganga; तस्मिन्गुप्ते (tasmin gupte) - when he is protected; ध्रुवः (dhruvaḥ) - certain; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Maternal uncle Shakuni, Shalya, Kripa, Drona, and Vivimshati, being attentive, protect the son of Ganga; when he is protected, victory is certain.)
Shakuni, Shalya, Kripa, Drona, and Vivimshati, the maternal uncles, are vigilant in protecting Bhishma, the son of Ganga. With him safeguarded, victory is assured.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु राजानो दुर्योधनवचस्तदा। सर्वतो रथवंशेन गाङ्गेयं पर्यवारयन् ॥६-९५-१७॥

(Having heard this, the kings then surrounded Bhishma with chariots from all sides at Duryodhana's words.)

पुत्राश्च तव गाङ्गेयं परिवार्य ययुर्मुदा। कम्पयन्तो भुवं द्यां च क्षोभयन्तश्च पाण्डवान् ॥६-९५-१८॥
