(Then all those kings went back to their abodes again, having become silent, O great king, when Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, became silent.)

श्रुत्वा तु निहतं भीष्मं राधेयः पुरुषर्षभः। ईषदागतसन्त्रासः त्वरयोपजगाम ह ॥६-११७-२॥

(Having heard that Bhishma was slain, Radheya, the bull among men, slightly fearful, approached with haste indeed.)
Upon hearing of Bhishma's fall, Radheya, known as Karna, felt a slight fear but quickly approached with urgency.
स ददर्श महात्मानं शरतल्पगतं तदा। जन्मशय्यागतं देवं कार्त्तिकेयमिव प्रभुम् ॥६-११७-३॥
sa dadarśa mahātmānaṃ śaratalpagataṃ tadā। janmaśayyāgataṃ devaṃ kārttikeyamiva prabhum ॥6-117-3॥

रहितं धिष्ण्यमालोक्य समुत्सार्य च रक्षिणः। पितेव पुत्रं गाङ्गेयः परिष्वज्यैकबाहुना ॥६-११७-७॥

(Having seen the throne devoid (of anyone) and having removed the guards, Bhishma embraced (him) like a father (embraces his) son with one arm.)
Upon seeing the empty throne and dismissing the guards, Bhishma embraced him with one arm, as a father would embrace his son.
एह्येहि मे विप्रतीप स्पर्धसे त्वं मया सह। यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा न ते श्रेयो भवेद्ध्रुवम् ॥६-११७-८॥

(Come, come, my opponent, you compete with me. If you do not approach me, your welfare will certainly not be.)

कौन्तेयस्त्वं न राधेयो विदितो नारदान्मम। कृष्णद्वैपायनाच्चैव केशवाच्च न संशयः ॥६-११७-९॥

(You are not known as the son of Radha to me by Narada, by Krishna Dvaipayana, and indeed by Keshava, no doubt.)
There is no doubt that you are known as the son of Kunti, not as the son of Radha, as informed to me by Narada, Krishna Dvaipayana, and Keshava.
न च द्वेषोऽस्ति मे तात त्वयि सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते। तेजोवधनिमित्तं तु परुषाण्यहमुक्तवान् ॥६-११७-१०॥
na ca dveṣo'sti me tāta tvayi satyaṃ bravīmi te। tejovadhanimitttaṃ tu paruṣāṇyahamuktavān ॥6-117-10॥

(And there is no hatred in me, dear father, towards you. I speak the truth to you. But I have spoken harsh words for the purpose of diminishing your splendor.)

अकस्मात्पाण्डवान्हि त्वं द्विषसीति मतिर्मम। येनासि बहुशो रूक्षं चोदितः सूर्यनन्दन ॥६-११७-११॥
akasmāt-pāṇḍavān hi tvaṃ dviṣasīti matir mama। yenāsi bahuśo rūkṣaṃ coditaḥ sūryanandana ॥6-117-11॥

(Suddenly, indeed, you hate the Pāṇḍavas; thus is my thought. By whom are you often urged harshly, O son of the Sun?)

जानामि समरे वीर्यं शत्रुभिर्दुःसहं तव। ब्रह्मण्यतां च शौर्यं च दाने च परमां गतिम् ॥६-११७-१२॥
jānāmi samare vīryaṃ śatrubhirduḥsahaṃ tava। brahmaṇyatāṃ ca śauryaṃ ca dāne ca paramāṃ gatim ॥6-117-12॥

(I know your valor in battle, unbearable by enemies; your devotion to Brahman, heroism, and supreme state in giving.)
I am aware of your valor in battle, which is unbearable for enemies, as well as your devotion to Brahman, heroism, and supreme excellence in generosity.
न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्पुरुषेष्वमरोपम। कुलभेदं च मत्वाहं सदा परुषमुक्तवान् ॥६-११७-१३॥
na tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścitpuruṣeṣvamaropama। kulabhedaṃ ca matvāhaṃ sadā paruṣamuktavān ॥6-117-13॥

[इष्वस्त्रे (iṣvastre) - in archery; भारसन्धाने (bhārasaṃdhāne) - in bearing weight; लाघवे (lāghave) - in lightness; अस्त्रबले (astrabale) - in the strength of weapons; तथा (tathā) - also; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; फल्गुनेन (phalgunena) - with Arjuna; असि (asi) - you are; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - with Krishna; च (ca) - and; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - with the great soul;]
(In archery, in bearing weight, in lightness, and in the strength of weapons, you are equal to Arjuna and Krishna, the great soul.)
In skills of archery, bearing weight, agility, and strength of weapons, you are comparable to Arjuna and the great soul Krishna.
कर्ण राजपुरं गत्वा त्वयैकेन धनुष्मता। तस्यार्थे कुरुराजस्य राजानो मृदिता युधि ॥६-११७-१५॥
karṇa rājapuraṃ gatvā tvayaikena dhanuṣmatā। tasyārthe kururājasya rājāno mṛditā yudhi ॥6-117-15॥
[कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; राजपुरं (rājapuram) - to the royal city; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एकेन (ekena) - alone; धनुष्मता (dhanuṣmatā) - with a bow; तस्यार्थे (tasyārthe) - for his sake; कुरुराजस्य (kururājasya) - of the Kuru king; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; मृदिता (mṛditā) - were crushed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Karna, having gone to the royal city, alone with a bow, for the sake of the Kuru king, the kings were crushed in battle.)

तथा च बलवान्राजा जरासन्धो दुरासदः। समरे समरश्लाघी त्वया न सदृशोऽभवत् ॥६-११७-१६॥

(Thus, the strong king Jarāsandha, formidable and boastful in battle, was not considered equal to you in battle.)

ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च तेजसार्क इवापरः। देवगर्भोऽजितः सङ्ख्ये मनुष्यैरधिको भुवि ॥६-११७-१७॥
brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca tejasārka ivāparaḥ। devagarbho'jitaḥ saṅkhye manuṣyairadhiko bhuvi ॥6-117-17॥

(Devoted to Brahman, a truth-speaker, like another sun by brilliance; divine womb, unconquered in battle, superior to men on earth.)

(Today, my anger, which was directed towards you before, has been removed. Fate cannot be overcome by human effort.)

सोदर्याः पाण्डवा वीरा भ्रातरस्तेऽरिसूदन। सङ्गच्छ तैर्महाबाहो मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥६-११७-१९॥
sodaryāḥ pāṇḍavā vīrā bhrātaraste'risūdana। saṅgaccha tairmahābāho mama cedicchasi priyam ॥6-117-19॥
[सोदर्याः (sodaryāḥ) - brothers; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; ते (te) - your; अरिसूदन (arisūdana) - O slayer of enemies; सङ्गच्छ (saṅgaccha) - unite; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; मम (mama) - my; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasure;]
(Brothers, the Pāṇḍavas are heroes, your brothers, O slayer of enemies. Unite with them, O mighty-armed, if you wish my pleasure.)
O slayer of enemies, the Pāṇḍavas, who are your heroic brothers, should be united with you, O mighty-armed one, if you desire my favor.
मया भवतु निर्वृत्तं वैरमादित्यनन्दन। पृथिव्यां सर्वराजानो भवन्त्वद्य निरामयाः ॥६-११७-२०॥
mayā bhavatu nirvṛttaṃ vairamādityanandana। pṛthivyāṃ sarvarājāno bhavantvadya nirāmayāḥ ॥6-117-20॥

(By me, let the enmity be ended, O son of Aditi. Let all the kings on earth be free from disease today.)

(I know, O great wise one, all this without a doubt. As you say, O unassailable one, I am the son of Kunti, not the son of a charioteer.)

अवकीर्णस्त्वहं कुन्त्या सूतेन च विवर्धितः। भुक्त्वा दुर्योधनैश्वर्यं न मिथ्या कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥६-११७-२२॥
avakīrṇastvahaṃ kuntyā sūtena ca vivardhitaḥ। bhuktvā duryodhanaiśvaryaṃ na mithyā kartumutsahe ॥6-117-22॥

(Scattered, you and I, nurtured by Kunti and the charioteer, having enjoyed Duryodhana's prosperity, I am not able to do false.)

वसु चैव शरीरं च यदुदारं तथा यशः। सर्वं दुर्योधनस्यार्थे त्यक्तं मे भूरिदक्षिण ॥६-११७-२३॥

कोपिताः पाण्डवा नित्यं मयाश्रित्य सुयोधनम् ॥६-११७-२३॥

पृथिवीक्षयशंसीनि निमित्तानि पितामह। भवद्भिरुपलब्धानि कथितानि च संसदि ॥६-११७-२५॥
pṛthivīkṣayaśaṃsīni nimittāni pitāmaha। bhavadbhirupalabdhāni kathitāni ca saṃsadi ॥6-117-25॥

न चेच्छक्यमथोत्स्रष्टुं वैरमेतत्सुदारुणम्। अनुजानामि कर्ण त्वां युध्यस्व स्वर्गकाम्यया ॥६-११७-२९॥
na cecchakyaṁathotsraṣṭuṁ vairametatsudāruṇam। anujānāmi karṇa tvāṁ yudhyasva svargakāmyayā ॥6-117-29॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इच्छक्यम् (icchakyaṁ) - possible; अथ (atha) - then; उत्स्रष्टुम् (utsraṣṭum) - to abandon; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; एतत् (etat) - this; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible; अनुजानामि (anujānāmi) - I permit; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; स्वर्गकाम्यया (svargakāmyayā) - for the desire of heaven;]
(It is not possible to abandon this very terrible enmity. I permit you, Karna, to fight for the desire of heaven.)

विमन्युर्गतसंरम्भः कुरु कर्म नृपस्य हि। यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं सतां वृत्तेषु वृत्तवान् ॥६-११७-३०॥
vimanyurgatasaṁrambhaḥ kuru karma nṛpasya hi। yathāśakti yathotsāhaṁ satāṁ vṛtteṣu vṛttavān ॥6-117-30॥
[विमन्युः (vimanyuḥ) - without anger; गतसंरम्भः (gatasaṁrambhaḥ) - calm; कुरु (kuru) - perform; कर्म (karma) - duty; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - according to; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; यथा (yathā) - according to; उत्साहं (utsāhaṁ) - enthusiasm; सतां (satāṁ) - of the virtuous; वृत्तेषु (vṛtteṣu) - in conduct; वृत्तवान् (vṛttavān) - engaged.;]
(Without anger and calm, perform the duty of the king indeed, according to ability and enthusiasm, engaged in the conduct of the virtuous.)

(I permit you; what you desire, obtain that. You will attain the worlds won by the duty of a warrior; no doubt.)

युध्यस्व निरहङ्कारो बलवीर्यव्यपाश्रयः। धर्मो हि युद्धाच्छ्रेयोऽन्यत्क्षत्रियस्य न विद्यते ॥६-११७-३२॥
yudhyasva nirahaṅkāro balavīryavyapāśrayaḥ। dharmo hi yuddhācchreyo'nyatkṣatriyasya na vidyate ॥6-117-32॥
[युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; निरहङ्कारः (nirahaṅkāraḥ) - without ego; बल (bala) - strength; वीर्य (vīrya) - valor; व्यपाश्रयः (vyapāśrayaḥ) - dependence; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; हि (hi) - indeed; युद्धात् (yuddhāt) - than war; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - for a warrior; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]

[प्रशमे (praśame) - in pacification; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; सुचिरात् (sucirāt) - for a long time; सुचिरं (suciraṃ) - long; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शकितः (śakitaḥ) - able; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; यतः (yataḥ) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; ततः (tataḥ) - there; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Indeed, effort was made in pacification for a long time by me. And it was not possible to do, where there is dharma, there is victory.)
I have indeed made efforts for a long time to bring about peace. However, it was not possible to achieve because where there is righteousness, there is victory.
सञ्जय उवाच॥

एवं ब्रुवन्तं गाङ्गेयमभिवाद्य प्रसाद्य च। राधेयो रथमारुह्य प्रायात्तव सुतं प्रति ॥६-११७-३४॥
evaṃ bruvantaṃ gāṅgeyama abhivādya prasādya ca। rādheyo ratham āruhya prāyāt tava sutaṃ prati ॥6-117-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ब्रुवन्तम् (bruvantam) - speaking; गाङ्गेयम् (gāṅgeyama) - to Bhishma; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; च (ca) - and; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - Karna; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; तव (tava) - your; सुतम् (sutam) - son; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Thus, having saluted and pleased Bhishma, Karna mounted the chariot and departed towards your son.)
Thus, after saluting and pleasing Bhishma, Karna mounted his chariot and proceeded towards your son.
