 Pancharatra and Core: Recommended by Karna, Duryodhana appoints Drona as the commander of the army. 
सञ्जय उवाच॥

रथस्थं पुरुषव्याघ्रं दृष्ट्वा कर्णमवस्थितम्। हृष्टो दुर्योधनो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७-५-१॥
rathasthaṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ dṛṣṭvā karṇamavasthitam। hṛṣṭo duryodhano rājannidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥7-5-1॥
[रथस्थम् (rathastham) - standing on the chariot; पुरुषव्याघ्रम् (puruṣavyāghram) - tiger among men; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; अवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - standing; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Seeing Karna standing on the chariot, the tiger among men, joyful Duryodhana, O king, spoke this speech.)
Upon seeing Karna, who was standing on the chariot and was a tiger among men, the joyful Duryodhana addressed the king with these words.
सनाथमिदमत्यर्थं भवता पालितं बलम्। मन्ये किं तु समर्थं यद्धितं तत्सम्प्रधार्यताम् ॥७-५-२॥
sanātham idam atyarthaṃ bhavatā pālitaṃ balam। manye kiṃ tu samarthaṃ yaddhitaṃ tat sampradhāryatām ॥7-5-2॥
[सनाथम् (sanātham) - protected; इदम् (idam) - this; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; पालितम् (pālitaṃ) - protected; बलम् (balam) - strength; मन्ये (manye) - I think; किम् (kim) - what; तु (tu) - but; समर्थम् (samartham) - capable; यत् (yat) - which; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; तत् (tat) - that; सम्प्रधार्यताम् (sampradhāryatām) - should be considered;]
(This strength, exceedingly protected by you, I think, but what is capable, that which is beneficial, should be considered.)
This strength has been exceedingly protected by you. However, I think that what is truly capable and beneficial should be considered.

(Speak, O tiger among men, you indeed are the wisest king. As the lord of wealth sees duty, so do not others.)
"O tiger among men, speak, for you are indeed the wisest of kings. Just as the lord of wealth perceives his duties, others do not see them in the same way."
ते स्म सर्वे तव वचः श्रोतुकामा नरेश्वर। नान्याय्यं हि भवान्वाक्यं ब्रूयादिति मतिर्मम ॥७-५-४॥

(They indeed, all, desirous to hear your words, O king. Not unjust indeed you would speak, thus is my belief.)
They all indeed are eager to hear your words, O king, for I believe you would not speak anything unjust.

(By him, the very famous Karna, by killing my enemy groups, we were protected for ten days by good fight by the great soul.)
For ten days, we were protected by the great Karna, who, with his renowned valor, fought valiantly and defeated my enemies.
तस्मिन्नसुकरं कर्म कृतवत्यास्थिते दिवम्। कं नु सेनाप्रणेतारं मन्यसे तदनन्तरम् ॥७-५-७॥
tasminnasukaraṁ karma kṛtavatyāsthite divam। kaṁ nu senāpraṇetāraṁ manyase tadanantaram ॥7-5-7॥

(In that difficult task, having done it and ascended to heaven, whom indeed do you consider the leader of the army after that?)
In that challenging task, having accomplished it and reached heaven, whom do you now consider to be the leader of the army?
न ऋते नायकं सेना मुहूर्तमपि तिष्ठति। आहवेष्वाहवश्रेष्ठ नेतृहीनेव नौर्जले ॥७-५-८॥
na ṛte nāyakaṃ senā muhūrtamapi tiṣṭhati। āhaveṣvāhavaśreṣṭha netṛhīneva naurjale ॥7-5-8॥
[न (na) - not; ऋते (ṛte) - without; नायकं (nāyakaṃ) - leader; सेना (senā) - army; मुहूर्तमपि (muhūrtamapi) - even for a moment; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; आहवेषु (āhaveṣu) - in battles; आहवश्रेष्ठ (āhavaśreṣṭha) - best of battles; नेतृहीना (netṛhīnā) - without a leader; इव (iva) - like; नौः (naur) - boat; जले (jale) - in water;]
(Without a leader, the army does not stand even for a moment. In battles, the best of battles, like a boat in water without a leader.)

यथा ह्यकर्णधारा नौ रथश्चासारथिर्यथा। द्रवेद्यथेष्टं तद्वत्स्यादृते सेनापतिं बलम् ॥७-५-९॥
yathā hyakarṇadhārā nau rathaścāsārathiryathā। dravedyathetṣṭaṃ tadvatsyādṛte senāpatiṃ balam ॥7-5-9॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; अकर्णधारा (akarṇadhārā) - without a helmsman; नौ (nau) - a ship; रथः (rathaḥ) - a chariot; च (ca) - and; असारथिः (asārathiḥ) - without a charioteer; यथा (yathā) - just as; द्रवेत् (dravet) - would move; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as it wishes; तद्वत् (tadvat) - so also; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; ऋते (ṛte) - without; सेनापतिम् (senāpatim) - a commander; बलम् (balam) - an army;]
(Just as a ship without a helmsman and a chariot without a charioteer would move as they wish, so also would an army be without a commander.)
An army without a commander is like a ship without a helmsman or a chariot without a charioteer, moving aimlessly as it pleases.
स भवान्वीक्ष्य सर्वेषु मामकेषु महात्मसु। पश्य सेनापतिं युक्तमनु शान्तनवादिह ॥७-५-१०॥
sa bhavān vīkṣya sarveṣu māmakeṣu mahātmasu। paśya senāpatiṃ yuktam anu śāntanavād iha ॥7-5-10॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; वीक्ष्य (vīkṣya) - having seen; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; मामकेषु (māmakeṣu) - my; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great souls; पश्य (paśya) - see; सेनापतिं (senāpatiṃ) - the general; युक्तम् (yuktam) - engaged; अनु (anu) - after; शान्तनवात् (śāntanavāt) - of Śāntanu; इह (iha) - here;]
(He, having seen all my great souls, see the general engaged here after Śāntanu.)

यं हि सेनाप्रणेतारं भवान्वक्ष्यति संयुगे। तं वयं सहिताः सर्वे प्रकरिष्याम मारिष ॥७-५-११॥

(Whom indeed you will appoint as the leader of the army in battle, him we all together will support, O honorable one.)

कुलसंहननज्ञानैर्बलविक्रमबुद्धिभिः। युक्ताः कृतज्ञा ह्रीमन्त आहवेष्वनिवर्तिनः ॥७-५-१३॥
kulasaṁhananajñānairbalavikramabuddhibhiḥ। yuktāḥ kṛtajñā hrīmanta āhaveṣvanivartinaḥ ॥7-5-13॥
[कुल (kula) - family; संहनन (saṁhanana) - strength; ज्ञानैः (jñānaiḥ) - by knowledge; बल (bala) - strength; विक्रम (vikrama) - valor; बुद्धिभिः (buddhibhiḥ) - by intelligence; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; कृतज्ञाः (kṛtajñāḥ) - grateful; ह्रीमन्तः (hrīmantaḥ) - modest; आहवेषु (āhaveṣu) - in battles; अनिवर्तिनः (anivartinaḥ) - non-retreating;]
(Endowed with family strength, knowledge, strength, valor, and intelligence; grateful, modest, and non-retreating in battles.)

anyonyaspardhināṃ teṣāṃ yadyekaṃ satkariṣyasi। śeṣā vimanaso vyaktaṃ na yotsyante hi bhārata ॥7-5-15॥
[अन्योन्यस्पर्धिनां (anyonyaspardhināṃ) - of those who are in mutual rivalry; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; यदि (yadi) - if; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; सत्करिष्यसि (satkariṣyasi) - you will honor; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the rest; विमनसः (vimanasaḥ) - disheartened; व्यक्तं (vyaktam) - clearly; न (na) - not; योत्स्यन्ते (yotsyante) - will fight; हि (hi) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of those who are in mutual rivalry, if you honor one, the rest, clearly disheartened, will not fight, indeed, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, if you honor one among those who are in mutual rivalry, the others will become disheartened and clearly will not fight.
अयं तु सर्वयोधानामाचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः। युक्तः सेनापतिः कर्तुं द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥७-५-१६॥
ayaṁ tu sarvayodhānām ācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ। yuktaḥ senāpatiḥ kartuṁ droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ॥7-5-16॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; तु (tu) - but; सर्वयोधानाम् (sarvayodhānām) - of all warriors; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - teacher; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - elder; गुरुः (guruḥ) - master; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - fit; सेनापतिः (senāpatiḥ) - general; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; शस्त्रभृताम् (śastrabhṛtām) - of weapon-bearers; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(This elder teacher of all warriors, master, is fit to make Drona the general, the best of weapon-bearers.)
This elder teacher and master of all warriors, Drona, is indeed fit to be made the general, being the best among weapon-bearers.
को हि तिष्ठति दुर्धर्षे द्रोणे ब्रह्मविदुत्तमे। सेनापतिः स्यादन्योऽस्माच्छुक्राङ्गिरसदर्शनात् ॥७-५-१७॥
ko hi tiṣṭhati durdharṣe droṇe brahmaviduttame। senāpatiḥ syādanyo'smācchukrāṅgirasadarśanāt ॥7-5-17॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣe) - invincible; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Droṇa; ब्रह्मविदुत्तमे (brahmaviduttame) - the supreme knower of Brahman; सेनापतिः (senāpatiḥ) - commander; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अस्मात् (asmāt) - than him; शुक्राङ्गिरसदर्शनात् (śukrāṅgirasadarśanāt) - from the vision of Śukra and Aṅgiras;]
(Who indeed stands invincible in Droṇa, the supreme knower of Brahman? Who else would be the commander than him from the vision of Śukra and Aṅgiras?)
Who indeed can stand invincible against Droṇa, the supreme knower of Brahman? Who else could be the commander other than him, as seen by Śukra and Aṅgiras?
न च स ह्यस्ति ते योधः सर्वराजसु भारत। यो द्रोणं समरे यान्तं नानुयास्यति संयुगे ॥७-५-१८॥
na ca sa hyasti te yodhaḥ sarvarājasu bhārata। yo droṇaṃ samare yāntaṃ nānuyāsyati saṃyuge ॥7-5-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; ते (te) - your; योधः (yodhaḥ) - warrior; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; यः (yaḥ) - who; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; समरे (samare) - in battle; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; न (na) - not; अनुयास्यति (anuyāsyati) - will follow; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in combat;]
(And there is no warrior among all the kings, O Bharata, who will not follow Droṇa going into battle in combat.)
O Bharata, there is no warrior among all the kings who will not follow Droṇa as he goes into battle.
एष सेनाप्रणेतॄणामेष शस्त्रभृतामपि। एष बुद्धिमतां चैव श्रेष्ठो राजन्गुरुश्च ते ॥७-५-१९॥
eṣa senāpraṇetṝṇāmeṣa śastrabhṛtāmapi। eṣa buddhimatāṃ caiva śreṣṭho rājanguruśca te ॥7-5-19॥

(This is the leader of the army, this is also of the wielders of weapons. This is indeed the best of the wise, O king, and your teacher.)
This person is the leader among the army chiefs, the foremost among the wielders of weapons, and indeed the best among the wise. O king, he is also your teacher.
एवं दुर्योधनाचार्यमाशु सेनापतिं कुरु। जिगीषन्तोऽसुरान्सङ्ख्ये कार्त्तिकेयमिवामराः ॥७-५-२०॥
evaṁ duryodhanācāryamāśu senāpatiṁ kuru। jigīṣanto'surānsaṅkhye kārttikeyamivāmarāḥ ॥7-5-20॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सेनापतिम् (senāpatim) - commander; कुरु (kuru) - make; जिगीषन्तः (jigīṣantaḥ) - desiring to conquer; असुरान् (asurān) - demons; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; कार्त्तिकेयम् (kārttikeyam) - Kartikeya; इव (iva) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - gods;]
(Thus, make Duryodhana the commander quickly, like the gods made Kartikeya in battle desiring to conquer the demons.)
Thus, quickly appoint Duryodhana as the commander, just as the gods appointed Kartikeya in the battle to conquer the demons.

[कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; वचनं (vacanam) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनस्तदा (duryodhanastadā) - Duryodhana then; सेनामध्यगतं (senāmadhyagataṃ) - in the midst of the army; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - to Drona; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard the words of Karna, King Duryodhana then spoke these words to Drona, who was in the midst of the army.)
Upon hearing Karna's words, King Duryodhana addressed Drona, who was positioned in the center of the army, with these words.
वर्णश्रैष्ठ्यात्कुलोत्पत्त्या श्रुतेन वयसा धिया। वीर्याद्दाक्ष्यादधृष्यत्वादर्थज्ञानान्नयाज्जयात् ॥७-५-२२॥
varṇaśraiṣṭhyātkulotpattyā śrutena vayasā dhiyā। vīryāddākṣyādadhṛṣyatvādarthajñānānnayājjayāt ॥7-5-22॥
