Core and Pancharatra: Bhima restrains Abhimanu, and takes on Shalya himself. Shalya is defeated by Bhima and is carried away by Kritavarma. Pandavas gain upper hand.

बहूनि सुविचित्राणि द्वंद्वयुद्धानि सञ्जय। त्वयोक्तानि निशम्याहं स्पृहयामि सचक्षुषाम् ॥७-१४-१॥
bahūni suvicitrāṇi dvandvayuddhāni sañjaya। tvayoktāni niśamyāhaṃ spṛhayāmi sacakṣuṣām ॥7-14-1॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; सुविचित्राणि (suvicitrāṇi) - very wonderful; द्वंद्वयुद्धानि (dvandvayuddhāni) - duel battles; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तानि (uktāni) - spoken; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; अहम् (aham) - I; स्पृहयामि (spṛhayāmi) - desire; सचक्षुषाम् (sacakṣuṣām) - of the seers;]
(Many very wonderful duel battles, O Sanjaya, having been spoken by you, having heard, I desire of the seers.)
O Sanjaya, having heard from you about the many very wonderful duel battles, I long for the vision of the seers.
आश्चर्यभूतं लोकेषु कथयिष्यन्ति मानवाः। कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च युद्धं देवासुरोपमम् ॥७-१४-२॥
āścaryabhūtaṃ lokeṣu kathayiṣyanti mānavāḥ। kurūṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca yuddhaṃ devāsuropamam ॥7-14-2॥
[आश्चर्यभूतं (āścaryabhūtaṃ) - wonderful; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; कथयिष्यन्ति (kathayiṣyanti) - will tell; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṃ) - of the Kurus; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pandavas; च (ca) - and; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; देवासुरोपमम् (devāsuropamam) - like that of gods and demons;]
(Humans will tell in the worlds of the wonderful battle of the Kurus and the Pandavas, like that of gods and demons.)
People will speak of the astonishing battle between the Kurus and the Pandavas, comparing it to the legendary conflicts between gods and demons.
न हि मे तृप्तिरस्तीह शृण्वतो युद्धमुत्तमम्। तस्मादार्तायनेर्युद्धं सौभद्रस्य च शंस मे ॥७-१४-३॥
na hi me tṛptirastīha śṛṇvato yuddhamuttamam। tasmādārtāyāneryuddhaṃ saubhadrasya ca śaṃsa me ॥7-14-3॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; तृप्तिः (tṛptiḥ) - satisfaction; अस्ति (asti) - is; इह (iha) - here; शृण्वतः (śṛṇvataḥ) - hearing; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; आर्तायनेः (ārtāyaneḥ) - of Arjuna; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; सौभद्रस्य (saubhadrasya) - of Abhimanyu; च (ca) - and; शंस (śaṃsa) - describe; मे (me) - to me;]
(Indeed, my satisfaction is not here hearing the excellent battle. Therefore, describe to me the battle of Arjuna and of Abhimanyu.)
I am not satisfied here by hearing about the excellent battle. Therefore, please describe to me the battle of Arjuna and Abhimanyu.

सादितं प्रेक्ष्य यन्तारं शल्यः सर्वायषीं गदाम्। समुत्क्षिप्य नदन्क्रुद्धः प्रचस्कन्द रथोत्तमात् ॥७-१४-४॥
sāditaṃ prekṣya yantāraṃ śalyaḥ sarvāyaṣīṃ gadām। samutkṣipya nadankruddhaḥ pracaskanda rathottamāt ॥7-14-4॥
[सादितं (sāditam) - struck; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; यन्तारं (yantāram) - charioteer; शल्यः (śalyaḥ) - Śalya; सर्वायषीं (sarvāyaṣīm) - all-iron; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; समुत्क्षिप्य (samutkṣipya) - lifting; नदन् (nadan) - roaring; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; प्रचस्कन्द (pracaskanda) - leaped; रथोत्तमात् (rathottamāt) - from the best chariot;]
(Seeing the struck charioteer, Śalya, lifting the all-iron mace, roaring angrily, leaped from the best chariot.)
Upon witnessing his charioteer being struck, Śalya, in a fit of rage, lifted his all-iron mace and leaped from his magnificent chariot, roaring with anger.
तं दीप्तमिव कालाग्निं दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम्। जवेनाभ्यपतद्भीमः प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ॥७-१४-५॥
taṃ dīptam iva kālāgniṃ daṇḍahastam ivāntakam। javenābhyapatad bhīmaḥ pragṛhya mahatīṃ gadām ॥7-14-5॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; कालाग्निम् (kālāgnim) - the fire of time; दण्डहस्तम् (daṇḍahastam) - with a staff in hand; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकम् (antakam) - death; जवेना (javenā) - with speed; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - rushed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - holding; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; गदाम् (gadām) - mace;]
(Bhima, holding a great mace, rushed towards him with speed, like blazing fire of time, like death with a staff in hand.)
Bhima, wielding his mighty mace, charged at him with the swiftness of a blazing fire, resembling the very embodiment of death with a staff in hand.
सौभद्रोऽप्यशनिप्रख्यां प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम्। एह्येहीत्यब्रवीच्छल्यं यत्नाद्भीमेन वारितः ॥७-१४-६॥
saubhadro'py aśaniprakhyāṃ pragṛhya mahatīṃ gadām। ehyehīty abravīcchalyaṃ yatnād bhīmena vāritaḥ ॥7-14-6॥

(The son of Subhadra, also holding the thunderbolt-like great mace, said to Shalya, 'Come, come,' being restrained by Bhima with effort.)
The son of Subhadra, holding his mighty mace that resembled a thunderbolt, called out to Shalya, 'Come, come,' but was restrained by Bhima with great effort.
वारयित्वा तु सौभद्रं भीमसेनः प्रतापवान्। शल्यमासाद्य समरे तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥७-१४-७॥
vārayitvā tu saubhadraṃ bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān। śalyamāsādya samare tasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥7-14-7॥

(Having restrained Saubhadra, the mighty Bhimasena stood in battle, having approached Shalya, like an immovable mountain.)
After restraining Saubhadra, the valiant Bhimasena confronted Shalya in the battlefield, standing firm like an unshakable mountain.
तथैव मद्रराजोऽपि भीमं दृष्ट्वा महाबलम्। ससाराभिमुखस्तूर्णं शार्दूल इव कुञ्जरम् ॥७-१४-८॥
tathaiva madrarājo'pi bhīmaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahābalam। sasārābhimukhastūrṇaṃ śārdūla iva kuñjaram ॥7-14-8॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; मद्रराजः (madrarājaḥ) - king of Madra; अपि (api) - also; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhima; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - great strength; ससार (sasāra) - moved; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - towards; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; शार्दूलः (śārdūlaḥ) - tiger; इव (iva) - like; कुञ्जरम् (kuñjaram) - elephant;]
(In the same way, the king of Madra, having seen Bhima of great strength, moved quickly towards him like a tiger towards an elephant.)
Similarly, the king of Madra, upon seeing the mighty Bhima, advanced swiftly towards him as a tiger would towards an elephant.
ततस्तूर्यनिनादाश्च शङ्खानां च सहस्रशः। सिंहनादाश्च सञ्जज्ञुर्भेरीणां च महास्वनाः ॥७-१४-९॥
tatastūryaninādaśca śaṅkhānāṃ ca sahasraśaḥ। siṃhanādaśca sañjajñurbherīṇāṃ ca mahāsvanāḥ ॥7-14-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्यनिनादाः (tūryaninādāḥ) - sounds of musical instruments; च (ca) - and; शङ्खानाम् (śaṅkhānām) - of conches; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - thousands; सिंहनादाः (siṃhanādāḥ) - lion roars; च (ca) - and; सञ्जज्ञुः (sañjajñuḥ) - arose; भेरीणाम् (bherīṇām) - of drums; च (ca) - and; महास्वनाः (mahāsvanāḥ) - great sounds;]
(Then the sounds of musical instruments and thousands of conches, lion roars, and great sounds of drums arose.)

पश्यतां शतशो ह्यासीदन्योन्यसमचेतसाम्। पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च साधु साध्विति निस्वनः ॥७-१४-१०॥
paśyatāṃ śataśo hy āsīd anyonya-samacetasām। pāṇḍavānāṃ kurūṇāṃ ca sādhu sādhv iti nisvanaḥ ॥7-14-10॥
[पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - of those who were watching; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - hundreds; हि (hi) - indeed; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; अन्योन्य (anyonya) - mutual; समचेतसाम् (samacetasām) - of those with equal minds; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - sound;]
(There was indeed a sound of 'well done, well done' from hundreds of those who were watching, of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, who were of equal minds.)
Amidst the hundreds of onlookers, both the Pandavas and the Kauravas, who shared a mutual understanding, there arose a sound of appreciation, 'well done, well done.'
न हि मद्राधिपादन्यः सर्वराजसु भारत। सोढुमुत्सहते वेगं भीमसेनस्य संयुगे ॥७-१४-११॥
na hi madrādhipādanyaḥ sarvarājasu bhārata। soḍhumutsahate vegaṃ bhīmasenasya saṃyuge ॥7-14-11॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मद्राधिपात् (madrādhipāt) - the king of Madra; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to withstand; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is capable; वегं (vegaṃ) - the force; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhimasena; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Indeed, O Bharata, no other among all kings is capable of withstanding the force of Bhimasena in battle.)
O Bharata, none of the kings, except the king of Madra, is capable of withstanding Bhimasena's force in battle.
तथा मद्राधिपस्यापि गदावेगं महात्मनः। सोढुमुत्सहते लोके कोऽन्यो युधि वृकोदरात् ॥७-१४-१२॥
tathā madrādhipasyāpi gadāvegaṃ mahātmanaḥ। soḍhumutsahate loke ko'nyo yudhi vṛkodarāt ॥7-14-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; मद्राधिपस्य (madrādhipasya) - of the king of Madra; अपि (api) - also; गदावेगं (gadāvegaṃ) - the force of the mace; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to withstand; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; लोके (loke) - in the world; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - else; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; वृकोदरात् (vṛkodarāt) - than Vrikodara;]
(Thus, who else in the world is able to withstand the force of the mace of the great soul, the king of Madra, in battle than Vrikodara?)
Thus, who else in the world can withstand the mighty force of the mace wielded by the great king of Madra in battle, other than Vrikodara?
पट्टैर्जाम्बूनदैर्बद्धा बभूव जनहर्षिणी। प्रजज्वाल तथाविद्धा भीमेन महती गदा ॥७-१४-१३॥
paṭṭairjāmbūnadairbaddhā babhūva janaharṣiṇī। prajajvāla tathāviddhā bhīmena mahatī gadā ॥7-14-13॥
[पट्टैः (paṭṭaiḥ) - with straps; जाम्बूनदैः (jāmbūnadaiḥ) - golden; बद्धा (baddhā) - bound; बभूव (babhūva) - became; जनहर्षिणी (janaharṣiṇī) - pleasing to people; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed; तथाविद्धा (tathāviddhā) - thus struck; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; महती (mahatī) - great; गदा (gadā) - mace;]
(Bound with golden straps, it became pleasing to people. The great mace, thus struck by Bhima, blazed.)
The great mace, adorned with golden straps, became a source of joy for the people. When struck by Bhima, it shone brilliantly.
तथैव चरतो मार्गान्मण्डलानि च भागशः। महाविद्युत्प्रतीकाशा शल्यस्य शुशुभे गदा ॥७-१४-१४॥
tathaiva carato mārgānmaṇḍalāni ca bhāgaśaḥ। mahāvidyutpratīkāśā śalyasya śuśubhe gadā ॥7-14-14॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; चरतः (carataḥ) - moving; मार्गान् (mārgān) - paths; मण्डलानि (maṇḍalāni) - circles; च (ca) - and; भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - in parts; महाविद्युत्प्रतीकाशा (mahāvidyutpratīkāśā) - resembling great lightning; शल्यस्य (śalyasya) - of Śalya; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; गदा (gadā) - mace;]
(In the same way, moving on paths and circles in parts, the mace of Śalya shone, resembling great lightning.)
In the same manner, as Śalya moved through the paths and circles in parts, his mace shone brightly, resembling a great lightning bolt.
तौ वृषाविव नर्दन्तौ मण्डलानि विचेरतुः। आवर्जितगदाशृङ्गावुभौ शल्यवृकोदरौ ॥७-१४-१५॥
tau vṛṣāv iva nardantau maṇḍalāni viceratuḥ। āvarjita-gadā-śṛṅgāv ubhau śalya-vṛkodarau ॥7-14-15॥
[तौ (tau) - they both; वृषाविव (vṛṣāv iva) - like bulls; नर्दन्तौ (nardantau) - roaring; मण्डलानि (maṇḍalāni) - in circles; विचेरतुः (viceratuḥ) - moved; आवर्जित (āvarjita) - bent; गदाशृङ्गौ (gadāśṛṅgau) - with mace and horn; उभौ (ubhau) - both; शल्यवृकोदरौ (śalya-vṛkodarau) - Śalya and Vṛkodara;]
(They both, like roaring bulls, moved in circles, bent with mace and horn, both Śalya and Vṛkodara.)

मण्डलावर्तमार्गेषु गदाविहरणेषु च। निर्विशेषमभूद्युद्धं तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ॥७-१४-१६॥
maṇḍalāvartamārgeṣu gadāviharaṇeṣu ca। nirviśeṣamabhūdyuddhaṃ tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ ॥7-14-16॥
[मण्डल (maṇḍala) - circle; आवर्त (āvarta) - turning; मार्गेषु (mārgeṣu) - in the paths; गदा (gadā) - mace; विहरणेषु (viharaṇeṣu) - in the wielding; च (ca) - and; निर्विशेषम् (nirviśeṣam) - without distinction; अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पुरुष (puruṣa) - men; सिंहयोः (siṃhayoḥ) - of the lions;]
(In the circular paths and in the wielding of maces, there was a battle without distinction between those two lion-like men.)

ताडिता भीमसेनेन शल्यस्य महती गदा। साग्निज्वाला महारौद्रा गदाचूर्णमशीर्यत ॥७-१४-१७॥

The mighty mace of Śalya, when struck by Bhīmasena, was shattered into pieces, appearing as if engulfed in fierce flames.
तथैव भीमसेनस्य द्विषताभिहता गदा। वर्षाप्रदोषे खद्योतैर्वृतो वृक्ष इवाबभौ ॥७-१४-१८॥
tathaiva bhīmasenasya dviṣatābhihatā gadā। varṣāpradoṣe khadyotairvṛto vṛkṣa ivābabhau ॥7-14-18॥

(In the same way, the mace of Bhimasena, struck by the enemy, appeared like a tree surrounded by fireflies in the rainy evening.)

गदा क्षिप्ता तु समरे मद्रराजेन भारत। व्योम संदीपयाना सा ससृजे पावकं बहु ॥७-१४-१९॥

(The mace, thrown in battle by the king of Madra, O Bharata, illuminating the sky, she produced much fire.)
O Bharata, the mace thrown by the king of Madra in battle illuminated the sky and produced a great fire.
तथैव भीमसेनेन द्विषते प्रेषिता गदा। तापयामास तत्सैन्यं महोल्का पतती यथा ॥७-१४-२०॥
tathaiva bhīmasenena dviṣate preṣitā gadā। tāpayāmāsa tatsainyaṃ maholkā patatī yathā ॥7-14-20॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; द्विषते (dviṣate) - to the enemy; प्रेषिता (preṣitā) - sent; गदा (gadā) - mace; तापयामास (tāpayāmāsa) - tormented; तत्सैन्यं (tatsainyaṃ) - that army; महाल्का (maholkā) - a great meteor; पतती (patatī) - falling; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(In the same way, the mace sent by Bhimasena tormented the enemy's army, like a great meteor falling.)
In the same manner, the mace hurled by Bhimasena struck the enemy forces with the impact of a falling meteor.
ते चैवोभे गदे श्रेष्ठे समासाद्य परस्परम्। श्वसन्त्यौ नागकन्येव ससृजाते विभावसुम् ॥७-१४-२१॥
te caivobhe gade śreṣṭhe samāsādya parasparam। śvasantyau nāgakanyeva sasṛjāte vibhāvasum ॥7-14-21॥

(They, indeed both best maces, having approached each other, breathing heavily like serpent maidens, emitted fire.)

नखैरिव महाव्याघ्रौ दन्तैरिव महागजौ। तौ विचेरतुरासाद्य गदाभ्यां च परस्परम् ॥७-१४-२२॥

(Like great tigers with claws, like great elephants with teeth, they both wandered, approaching each other with maces.)
The two warriors, resembling great tigers with claws and great elephants with tusks, approached each other wielding maces.

अथाप्लुत्य पदान्यष्टौ संनिपत्य गजाविव। सहसा लोहदण्डाभ्यामन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ॥७-१४-२८॥
