Pancharatra and Core: Arjuna returns to fight Shusharman of Trigarts; then he deals with Bhagadatta.

यियासतस्ततः कृष्णः पार्थस्याश्वान्मनोजवान्। अप्रैषीद्धेमसञ्छन्नान्द्रोणानीकाय पाण्डुरान् ॥७-२७-१॥
yiyāsatastataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pārthasyāśvānmanojavān। apraiṣīddhemasañchannāndroṇānīkāya pāṇḍurān ॥7-27-1॥
[यियासतः (yiyāsataḥ) - desiring; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; मनोजवान् (manojavān) - swift as the mind; अप्रैषीत् (apraiṣīt) - dispatched; हेमसञ्छन्नान् (hemasañchannān) - covered in gold; द्रोणानीकाय (droṇānīkāya) - to Drona's army; पाण्डुरान् (pāṇḍurān) - white;]
(Then Krishna, desiring, dispatched Partha's horses, swift as the mind, covered in gold, to Drona's white army.)
Then Krishna, eager for battle, sent Arjuna's swift and golden-adorned horses towards Drona's army.
तं प्रयान्तं कुरुश्रेष्ठं स्वांस्त्रातुं द्रोणतापितान्। सुशर्मा भ्रातृभिः सार्धं युद्धार्थी पृष्ठतोऽन्वयात् ॥७-२७-२॥
taṃ prayāntaṃ kuruśreṣṭhaṃ svāṃstrātuṃ droṇatāpitān। suśarmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ yuddhārthī pṛṣṭhato'nvayāt ॥7-27-2॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रयान्तं (prayāntaṃ) - departing; कुरुश्रेष्ठं (kuruśreṣṭhaṃ) - best of the Kurus; स्वान् (svān) - own; त्रातुं (trātuṃ) - to protect; द्रोणतापितान् (droṇatāpitān) - afflicted by Drona; सुशर्मा (suśarmā) - Susharma; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; युद्धार्थी (yuddhārthī) - desiring battle; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वयात् (anvayāt) - followed;]
(Susharma, with his brothers, desiring battle, followed from behind him, the best of the Kurus, who was departing to protect his own afflicted by Drona.)
As the best of the Kurus was departing to protect his own men afflicted by Drona, Susharma, along with his brothers, followed him from behind, eager for battle.
ततः श्वेतहयः कृष्णमब्रवीदजितं जयः। एष मां भ्रातृभिः सार्धं सुशर्माह्वयतेऽच्युत ॥७-२७-३॥
tataḥ śvetahayaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīd ajitaṃ jayaḥ। eṣa māṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ suśarmāhvayate'cyuta ॥7-27-3॥

(Then the white-horsed one said to Krishna, "O unconquered one, victory! This Susharma, along with his brothers, challenges me, O infallible one.")
Then the white-horsed Arjuna said to Krishna, "O unconquered one, victory is ours! Susharma, along with his brothers, is challenging me, O infallible one."
दीर्यते चोत्तरेणैतत्सैन्यं नः शत्रुसूदन। द्वैधीभूतं मनो मेऽद्य कृतं संशप्तकैरिदम् ॥७-२७-४॥
dīryate cottareṇaitatsainyaṃ naḥ śatrusūdana। dvaidhībhūtaṃ mano me'dya kṛtaṃ saṃśaptakairidam ॥7-27-4॥
[दीर्यते (dīryate) - is expanding; च (ca) - and; उत्तरेण (uttareṇa) - by the north; एतत् (etat) - this; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; नः (naḥ) - our; शत्रुसूदन (śatrusūdana) - O enemy-slayer; द्वैधीभूतम् (dvaidhībhūtam) - divided; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; मे (me) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; संशप्तकैः (saṃśaptakaiḥ) - by the Saṃśaptakas; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(This army of ours, O enemy-slayer, is expanding by the north; my mind has been divided today by the Saṃśaptakas.)
O enemy-slayer, our army is expanding towards the north, and today my mind has been divided by the Saṃśaptakas.
किं नु संशप्तकान्हन्मि स्वान्रक्षाम्यहितार्दितान्। इति मे त्वं मतं वेत्थ तत्र किं सुकृतं भवेत् ॥७-२७-५॥
kiṁ nu saṁśaptakānhanmi svānrakṣāmyahitārditān। iti me tvaṁ mataṁ vettha tatra kiṁ sukṛtaṁ bhavet ॥7-27-5॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; संशप्तकान् (saṁśaptakān) - the Saṁśaptakas; हन्मि (hanmi) - I kill; स्वान् (svān) - own; रक्षामि (rakṣāmi) - I protect; अहित (ahita) - enemies; आर्दितान् (ārditān) - afflicted; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; मतं (mataṁ) - opinion; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; तत्र (tatra) - there; किं (kiṁ) - what; सुकृतं (sukṛtaṁ) - good deed; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(What indeed, should I kill the Saṁśaptakas or protect my own who are afflicted by enemies? Thus, you know my opinion there, what good deed would be?)
What should I do? Should I kill the Saṁśaptakas or protect my own people who are afflicted by enemies? You know my opinion on this matter, what would be the right thing to do?
एवमुक्तस्तु दाशार्हः स्यन्दनं प्रत्यवर्तयत्। येन त्रिगर्ताधिपतिः पाण्डवं समुपाह्वयत् ॥७-२७-६॥
evamuktastu dāśārhaḥ syandanaṃ pratyavartayat। yena trigartādhipatiḥ pāṇḍavaṃ samupāhvayat ॥7-27-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the descendant of the Daśārhas; स्यन्दनम् (syandanam) - chariot; प्रत्यवर्तयत् (pratyavartayat) - turned back; येन (yena) - by whom; त्रिगर्ताधिपतिः (trigartādhipatiḥ) - the lord of the Trigartas; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the son of Pandu; समुपाह्वयत् (samupāhvayat) - challenged;]
(Thus spoken, the descendant of the Daśārhas turned back the chariot by whom the lord of the Trigartas challenged the son of Pandu.)
Upon hearing these words, the descendant of the Daśārhas turned his chariot back, responding to the challenge posed by the lord of the Trigartas to the son of Pandu.
ततोऽर्जुनः सुशर्माणं विद्ध्वा सप्तभिराशुगैः। ध्वजं धनुश्चास्य तथा क्षुराभ्यां समकृन्तत ॥७-२७-७॥
tato'rjunaḥ suśarmāṇaṃ viddhvā saptabhirāśugaiḥ। dhvajaṃ dhanuścāsya tathā kṣurābhyāṃ samakṛntata ॥7-27-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; सुशर्माणं (suśarmāṇam) - Suśarman; विद्ध्वा (viddhvā) - having pierced; सप्तभिः (saptabhiḥ) - with seven; आशुगैः (āśugaiḥ) - swift arrows; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - the flag; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - the bow; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; तथा (tathā) - also; क्षुराभ्यां (kṣurābhyām) - with two razor-headed arrows; समकृन्तत (samakṛntata) - cut off;]
(Then Arjuna, having pierced Suśarman with seven swift arrows, also cut off his flag and bow with two razor-headed arrows.)
Then Arjuna shot seven swift arrows at Suśarman, cutting off his flag and bow with two razor-sharp arrows.
त्रिगर्ताधिपतेश्चापि भ्रातरं षड्भिरायसैः। साश्वं ससूतं त्वरितः पार्थः प्रैषीद्यमक्षयम् ॥७-२७-८॥
trigartādhipateścāpi bhrātaraṃ ṣaḍbhirāyasaiḥ। sāśvaṃ sasūtaṃ tvaritaḥ pārthaḥ praiṣīdyamakṣayam ॥7-27-8॥
[त्रिगर्त (trigarta) - Trigarta; अधिपतेः (adhipateḥ) - lord; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - with six; आयसैः (āyasaiḥ) - iron; स (sa) - with; अश्वं (aśvaṃ) - horse; स (sa) - with; सूतं (sūtaṃ) - charioteer; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; प्रैषीत् (praiṣīt) - sent; अमक्षयम् (amakṣayam) - to death;]
(Arjuna quickly sent the brother of the lord of Trigarta, along with his horse and charioteer, to death with six iron arrows.)
Arjuna swiftly dispatched the brother of the Trigarta king, along with his horse and charioteer, to an endless death using six iron arrows.
ततो भुजगसङ्काशां सुशर्मा शक्तिमायसीम्। चिक्षेपार्जुनमादिश्य वासुदेवाय तोमरम् ॥७-२७-९॥
tato bhujagasaṅkāśāṃ suśarmā śaktimāyasīm। cikṣepārjunamādiśya vāsudevāya tomaram ॥7-27-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भुजगसङ्काशाम् (bhujagasaṅkāśām) - serpent-like; सुशर्मा (suśarmā) - Susharma; शक्तिमायसीम् (śaktimāyasīm) - iron spear; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - hurled; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - at Arjuna; आदिश्य (ādiśya) - ordering; वासुदेवाय (vāsudevāya) - to Vasudeva; तोमरम् (tomaram) - lance;]
(Then Susharma, ordering to Vasudeva, hurled the serpent-like iron spear at Arjuna.)
Then Susharma, resembling a serpent, hurled the iron spear at Arjuna, directing it towards Vasudeva.
शक्तिं त्रिभिः शरैश्छित्त्वा तोमरं त्रिभिरर्जुनः। सुशर्माणं शरव्रातैर्मोहयित्वा न्यवर्तत ॥७-२७-१०॥
śaktiṃ tribhiḥ śaraiśchittvā tomaraṃ tribhirarjunaḥ। suśarmāṇaṃ śaravrātairmohayitvā nyavartata ॥7-27-10॥
[शक्तिम् (śaktim) - power; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - with three; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut; तोमरम् (tomaram) - spear; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - with three; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; सुशर्माणम् (suśarmāṇam) - Suśarman; शरव्रातैः (śaravrātaiḥ) - with a multitude of arrows; मोहयित्वा (mohayitvā) - having bewildered; न्यवर्तत (nyavartata) - turned back;]
(Arjuna, having cut the power with three arrows and the spear with three, bewildered Suśarman with a multitude of arrows and turned back.)
Arjuna skillfully cut through the power and spear with his arrows, bewildered Suśarman, and then turned back from the battlefield.
तं वासवमिवायान्तं भूरिवर्षशरौघिणम्। राजंस्तावकसैन्यानां नोग्रं कश्चिदवारयत् ॥७-२७-११॥
taṁ vāsavamivāyāntaṁ bhūrivarṣaśaraughiṇam। rājaṁstāvakasainyānāṁ nograṁ kaścidavārayat ॥7-27-11॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; वासवम् (vāsavam) - like Indra; इव (iva) - as; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; भूरि (bhūri) - abundant; वर्ष (varṣa) - rain; शर (śara) - arrows; ओघिणम् (aughiṇam) - flooding; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तावक (tāvaka) - your; सैन्यानाम् (sainyānām) - of the armies; न (na) - not; उग्रं (ugram) - fierce; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अवारयत् (avārayat) - could stop;]
(Him, like Indra, approaching, abundant rain of arrows flooding, O king, your armies not fierce anyone could stop.)
No one could stop him, who was approaching like Indra, with a flood of arrows as abundant as rain, O king, not even your fierce armies.
ततो धनञ्जयो बाणैस्तत एव महारथान्। आयाद्विनिघ्नन्कौरव्यान्दहन्कक्षमिवानलः ॥७-२७-१२॥
tato dhanañjayo bāṇaistata eva mahārathān। āyādvinighnankauravyāndahankṣamivānalaḥ ॥7-27-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Arjuna; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; तत (tata) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great warriors; आयात् (āyāt) - came; विनिघ्नन् (vinighnan) - slaying; कौरव्यान् (kauravyān) - Kauravas; दहन् (dahan) - burning; क्षम् (kṣam) - earth; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire;]
(Then Arjuna, with arrows, came there indeed, slaying the great warriors, burning the Kauravas like fire burns the earth.)
Then Arjuna, with his arrows, approached and began to slay the great warriors, burning the Kauravas like a fire consuming the earth.
तस्य वेगमसह्यं तु कुन्तीपुत्रस्य धीमतः। नाशक्नुवंस्ते संसोढुं स्पर्शमग्नेरिव प्रजाः ॥७-२७-१३॥
tasya vegamasahyaṃ tu kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ। nāśaknuvṃste saṃsoḍhuṃ sparśamagneriva prajāḥ ॥7-27-13॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; वегम् (vegam) - speed; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; तु (tu) - but; कुन्तीपुत्रस्य (kuntīputrasya) - of Kunti's son; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - able; ते (te) - they; संसोढुम् (saṃsoḍhum) - to endure; स्पर्शम् (sparśam) - touch; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of fire; इव (iva) - like; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - people;]
(His speed was unbearable, but the wise son of Kunti, they were not able to endure the touch, like that of fire, the people.)
The people could not endure the unbearable speed of the wise son of Kunti, just as they cannot endure the touch of fire.
संवेष्टयन्ननीकानि शरवर्षेण पाण्डवः। सुपर्णपातवद्राजन्नायात्प्राग्ज्योतिषं प्रति ॥७-२७-१४॥
saṁveṣṭayannanīkāni śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ। suparṇapātavad rājann āyāt prāgjyotiṣaṁ prati ॥7-27-14॥
[संवेष्टयन् (saṁveṣṭayan) - enveloping; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - the troops; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; सुपर्णपातवत् (suparṇapātavat) - like Garuda's swoop; राजन् (rājan) - O King; आयात् (āyāt) - came; प्राग्ज्योतिषं (prāgjyotiṣaṁ) - to Pragjyotisha; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Enveloping the troops with a shower of arrows, the Pandava came towards Pragjyotisha like Garuda's swoop, O King.)
The Pandava, enveloping the troops with a shower of arrows, approached Pragjyotisha like the swoop of Garuda, O King.
यत्तदानामयज्जिष्णुर्भरतानामपायिनाम्। धनुः क्षेमकरं सङ्ख्ये द्विषतामश्रुवर्धनम् ॥७-२७-१५॥
yattadānāmayajjiṣṇurbharatānāmapāyinām। dhanuḥ kṣemakaraṃ saṅkhye dviṣatāmaśruvardhanam ॥7-27-15॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तदा (tadā) - then; नाम (nāma) - name; यज् (yaj) - sacrifice; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - victorious; भरतानाम् (bharatānām) - of the Bharatas; अपायिनाम् (apāyinām) - of those who are departing; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; क्षेमकरम् (kṣemakaram) - auspicious; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; अश्रुवर्धनम् (aśruvardhanam) - increasing tears;]
(Which then, the name of the sacrifice, victorious of the Bharatas, of those who are departing, the bow, auspicious in battle, increasing the tears of the enemies.)
The bow, known as the victorious sacrifice of the Bharatas, brings auspiciousness in battle and increases the tears of the departing enemies.
तदेव तव पुत्रस्य राजन्दुर्द्यूतदेविनः। कृते क्षत्रविनाशाय धनुरायच्छदर्जुनः ॥७-२७-१६॥
tadeva tava putrasya rājandurdyūtadevinaḥ। kṛte kṣatravināśāya dhanurāyacchadarjunaḥ ॥7-27-16॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - son's; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुर्द्यूत (durdyūta) - of the evil dice game; देविनः (devinaḥ) - gambler; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake; क्षत्र (kṣatra) - of the kshatriyas; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - destruction; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आयच्छत् (āyacchat) - took up; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna;]
(That indeed, your son's, O king, gambler of the evil dice game, for the sake of the destruction of the kshatriyas, Arjuna took up the bow.)
O king, it was indeed for the destruction of the kshatriyas that your son, the gambler of the evil dice game, caused Arjuna to take up the bow.
तथा विक्षोभ्यमाणा सा पार्थेन तव वाहिनी। व्यदीर्यत महाराज नौरिवासाद्य पर्वतम् ॥७-२७-१७॥
tathā vikṣobhyamāṇā sā pārthena tava vāhinī। vyadīryata mahārāja naurivāsādya parvatam ॥7-27-17॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विक्षोभ्यमाणा (vikṣobhyamāṇā) - being agitated; सा (sā) - that; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Arjuna; तव (tava) - your; वाहिनी (vāhinī) - army; व्यदीर्यत (vyadīryata) - was shattered; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नौः (nauḥ) - like a ship; इव (iva) - as if; असाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - a mountain;]
(Thus, being agitated by Arjuna, your army was shattered, O great king, like a ship having reached a mountain.)
O great king, your army was shattered by Arjuna as if a ship had struck a mountain.
ततो दश सहस्राणि न्यवर्तन्त धनुष्मताम्। मतिं कृत्वा रणे क्रुद्धा वीरा जयपराजये ॥७-२७-१८॥
tato daśa sahasrāṇi nyavartanta dhanuṣmatām। matiṁ kṛtvā raṇe kruddhā vīrā jayaparājaye ॥7-27-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दश (daśa) - ten; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - turned back; धनुष्मताम् (dhanuṣmatām) - of the bowmen; मतिम् (matim) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; जयपराजये (jayaparājaye) - on victory and defeat;]
(Then ten thousand bowmen, having made up their minds, turned back in battle, angry heroes on victory and defeat.)
Then, ten thousand bowmen, having resolved in their minds, turned back in the battle, as angry heroes contemplating victory and defeat.
व्यपेतहृदयत्रास आपद्धर्मातिगो रथः। आर्छत्पार्थो गुरुं भारं सर्वभारसहो युधि ॥७-२७-१९॥
vyapetahṛdayatrāsa āpaddharmātigo rathaḥ। ārchatpārtho guruṃ bhāraṃ sarvabhārasaho yudhi ॥7-27-19॥
[व्यपेत (vyapeta) - freed from; हृदय (hṛdaya) - heart; त्रास (trāsa) - fear; आपद् (āpada) - calamity; धर्म (dharma) - duty; अतिग (atiga) - transcending; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; आर्छत् (ārchat) - approached; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; गुरुं (guruṃ) - heavy; भारं (bhāraṃ) - burden; सर्व (sarva) - all; भार (bhāra) - burden; सह (saha) - bearing; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(The chariot, transcending duty in calamity, freed from heart's fear, approached. Arjuna, bearing all burdens, approached the heavy burden in battle.)
Freed from the fear in his heart, the chariot transcended the duty in calamity. Arjuna, capable of bearing all burdens, approached the heavy burden in battle.
यथा नडवनं क्रुद्धः प्रभिन्नः षष्टिहायनः। मृद्नीयात्तद्वदायस्तः पार्थोऽमृद्नाच्चमूं तव ॥७-२७-२०॥
yathā naḍavanaṃ kruddhaḥ prabhinnah ṣaṣṭihāyanaḥ। mṛdnīyāttadvadāyastaḥ pārtho'mṛdnāccamūṃ tava ॥7-27-20॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; नडवनं (naḍavanam) - a reed forest; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; प्रभिन्नः (prabhinnah) - broken; षष्टिहायनः (ṣaṣṭihāyanaḥ) - sixty years old; मृद्नीयात् (mṛdnīyāt) - would crush; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that way; आयस्तः (āyastaḥ) - exhausted; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; अमृद्नात् (amṛdnāt) - crushed; चमूं (camūm) - army; तव (tava) - your;]
(Just as an angry, broken sixty-year-old would crush a reed forest, in that way, the exhausted Arjuna crushed your army.)
In the same way that an angry old man of sixty years might crush a forest of reeds, the weary Arjuna devastated your forces.
तस्मिन्प्रमथिते सैन्ये भगदत्तो नराधिपः। तेन नागेन सहसा धनञ्जयमुपाद्रवत् ॥७-२७-२१॥
tasmin pramathite sainye bhagadatto narādhipaḥ। tena nāgena sahasā dhanañjayam upādravat ॥7-27-21॥

(In that shattered army, King Bhagadatta suddenly attacked Dhananjaya with that elephant.)
In the midst of the shattered army, King Bhagadatta, riding his elephant, suddenly charged at Arjuna.
तं रथेन नरव्याघ्रः प्रत्यगृह्णादभीतवत्। स संनिपातस्तुमुलो बभूव रथनागयोः ॥७-२७-२२॥
taṁ rathena naravyāghraḥ pratyagṛhṇādabhītavat। sa saṁnipātastumulo babhūva rathanāgayoḥ ॥7-27-22॥

(The tiger among men received him with the chariot fearlessly. That encounter of chariots and elephants became tumultuous.)
The fearless warrior, like a tiger among men, received him with his chariot. The encounter between the chariots and elephants became tumultuous.
कल्पिताभ्यां यथाशास्त्रं रथेन च गजेन च। सङ्ग्रामे चेरतुर्वीरौ भगदत्तधनञ्जयौ ॥७-२७-२३॥
kalpitābhyāṃ yathāśāstraṃ rathena ca gajena ca। saṅgrāme ceraturvīrau bhagadattadhanañjayau ॥7-27-23॥

(Then, like Indra overpowering from the cloud-like serpent, Bhagadatta showered Dhananjaya with a multitude of arrows.)

(He, the son of Vāsava, also cut off that arrow shower with an arrow shower of his own, even before it reached him, the mighty Bhagadatta.)

ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा शरवर्षं निवार्य तत्। शरैर्जघ्ने महाबाहुं पार्थं कृष्णं च भारत ॥७-२७-२६॥
tataḥ prāgjyotiṣo rājā śaravarṣaṃ nivārya tat। śarairjaghne mahābāhuṃ pārthaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ ca bhārata ॥7-27-26॥

(Then the king of Prāgjyotiṣa, having warded off the shower of arrows, struck the mighty-armed Arjuna and Krishna with arrows, O Bharata.)

ततः स शरजालेन महताभ्यवकीर्य तौ। चोदयामास तं नागं वधायाच्युतपार्थयोः ॥७-२७-२७॥

(Then he, having greatly covered those two with a net of arrows, urged that elephant for the killing of Acyuta and Partha.)

तमापतन्तं द्विरदं दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धमिवान्तकम्। चक्रेऽपसव्यं त्वरितः स्यन्दनेन जनार्दनः ॥७-२७-२८॥
tamāpatantaṃ dviradaṃ dṛṣṭvā kruddhamivāntakam। cakre'pasavyaṃ tvaritaḥ syandanena janārdanaḥ ॥7-27-28॥

(Seeing the elephant approaching him like angry death, Janardana quickly turned the chariot to the left.)
Janardana, seeing the elephant charging towards him as if it were death itself in anger, swiftly maneuvered his chariot to the left.
सम्प्राप्तमपि नेयेष परावृत्तं महाद्विपम्। सारोहं मृत्युसात्कर्तुं स्मरन्धर्मं धनञ्जयः ॥७-२७-२९॥
samprāptamapi neyeṣa parāvṛttaṃ mahādvipam। sārohaṃ mṛtyusātkartuṃ smarandharmaṃ dhanañjayaḥ ॥7-27-29॥

(Even though the great elephant with its rider had arrived, Arjuna, remembering his duty, did not desire to consign it to death.)
Arjuna, recalling his duty, refrained from killing the great elephant and its rider, even though they had approached.
स तु नागो द्विपरथान्हयांश्चारुज्य मारिष। प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय ततोऽक्रुध्यद्धनञ्जयः ॥७-२७-३०॥
sa tu nāgo dviparathānhayāṃścārujya māriṣa। prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya tato'krudhyaddhanañjayaḥ ॥7-27-30॥

(He, the serpent, destroying elephants, chariots, and horses, O descendant of Marīci, sent them to the world of death; then Arjuna became angry.)
The serpent, after destroying the elephants, chariots, and horses, sent them to the world of death, which made Arjuna angry.
