 Pancharatra and Core: Arjuna is confused about whether to pursue the Samsaptakas or Bhagadatta and chooses to battle the Samsaptakas.

yanmāṁ pārthasya saṅgrāme karmāṇi paripṛcchasi। tacchṛṇuṣva mahārāja pārtho yadakaronmṛdhe ॥7-26-1॥
[यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - you ask; तत् (tat) - that; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - hear; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Partha; यत् (yat) - which; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; मृधे (mṛdhe) - in the battle;]

रजो दृष्ट्वा समुद्भूतं श्रुत्वा च गजनिस्वनम्। भज्यतां भगदत्तेन कौन्तेयः कृष्णमब्रवीत् ॥७-२६-२॥
rajo dṛṣṭvā samudbhūtaṃ śrutvā ca gajanisvanam। bhajyatāṃ bhagadattena kaunteyaḥ kṛṣṇamabravīt ॥7-26-2॥

Upon witnessing the rising dust and hearing the trumpeting of elephants, the son of Kunti, under attack by Bhagadatta, spoke to Krishna.
यथा प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा गजेन मधुसूदन। त्वरमाणोऽभ्यतिक्रान्तो ध्रुवं तस्यैष निस्वनः ॥७-२६-३॥
yathā prāgjyotiṣo rājā gajena madhusūdana। tvaramāṇo'bhyatikrānto dhruvaṃ tasyaaiṣa nisvanaḥ ॥7-26-3॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; प्राग्ज्योतिषः (prāgjyotiṣaḥ) - of Prāgjyotiṣa; राजा (rājā) - king; गजेन (gajena) - by elephant; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusūdana; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; अभ्यतिक्रान्तः (abhyatikrāntaḥ) - surpassed; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; तस्य (tasya) - his; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - sound;]
(As the king of Prāgjyotiṣa, Madhusūdana, hastening by elephant, certainly surpassed, this is his sound.)
Just as the king of Prāgjyotiṣa, Madhusūdana, hurried past on his elephant, this must be the sound of him.
इन्द्रादनवरः सङ्ख्ये गजयानविशारदः। प्रथमो वा द्वितीयो वा पृथिव्यामिति मे मतिः ॥७-२६-४॥
indrādanavaraḥ saṅkhye gajayānaviśāradaḥ। prathamo vā dvitīyo vā pṛthivyāmiti me matiḥ ॥7-26-4॥

स चापि द्विरदश्रेष्ठः सदाप्रतिगजो युधि। सर्वशब्दातिगः सङ्ख्ये कृतकर्मा जितक्लमः ॥७-२६-५॥
sa cāpi dviradaśreṣṭhaḥ sadāpratigajo yudhi। sarvaśabdātigaḥ saṅkhye kṛtakarmā jitaklamaḥ ॥7-26-5॥

(Capable of weapon strikes and fire touch, O sinless one, he will clearly destroy the Pāṇḍava army alone today.)
O sinless one, he who is capable of withstanding weapon strikes and the touch of fire will single-handedly destroy the Pāṇḍava army today.
न चावाभ्यामृतेऽन्योऽस्ति शक्तस्तं प्रतिबाधितुम्। त्वरमाणस्ततो याहि यतः प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपः ॥७-२६-७॥
na cāvābhyāmṛte'nyo'sti śaktastaṃ pratibādhitum। tvaramāṇastato yāhi yataḥ prāgjyotiṣādhipaḥ ॥7-26-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अवाभ्याम् (avābhyām) - by us two; ऋते (ṛte) - except; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अस्ति (asti) - is; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; तम् (tam) - him; प्रतिबाधितुम् (pratibādhitum) - to obstruct; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hurrying; ततः (tataḥ) - then; याहि (yāhi) - go; यतः (yataḥ) - where; प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपः (prāgjyotiṣādhipaḥ) - the lord of Prāgjyotiṣa;]
(Not by us two except another is capable him to obstruct. Hurrying then go where the lord of Prāgjyotiṣa.)

शक्रसख्याद्द्विपबलैर्वयसा चापि विस्मितम्। अद्यैनं प्रेषयिष्यामि बलहन्तुः प्रियातिथिम् ॥७-२६-८॥
śakrasakhyāddvipabalairvayasā cāpi vismitam। adyainaṃ preṣayiṣyāmi balahantuḥ priyātithim ॥7-26-8॥
[शक्रसख्यात् (śakrasakhyāt) - from the friendship of Indra; द्विपबलैः (dvipabalaiḥ) - by the strength of elephants; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विस्मितम् (vismitam) - astonished; अद्य (adya) - today; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रेषयिष्यामि (preṣayiṣyāmi) - I will send; बलहन्तुः (balahantuḥ) - of the destroyer of strength; प्रियातिथिम् (priyātithim) - dear guest;]

Upon hearing the words, Krishna left Arjuna to go where Bhagadatta was attacking the Pandava army.
तं प्रयान्तं ततः पश्चादाह्वयन्तो महारथाः। संशप्तकाः समारोहन्सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥७-२६-१०॥
taṃ prayāntaṃ tataḥ paścādāhvayanto mahārathāḥ। saṃśaptakāḥ samārohansahasrāṇi caturdaśa ॥7-26-10॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रयान्तं (prayāntaṃ) - departing; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; आह्वयन्तः (āhvayantaḥ) - challenging; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; संशप्तकाः (saṃśaptakāḥ) - the Samsaptakas; समारोहन (samārohan) - assembled; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen;]

As he was departing, the great warriors, known as the Samsaptakas, challenged him, assembling fourteen thousand strong.
दशैव तु सहस्राणि त्रिगर्तानां नराधिप। चत्वारि तु सहस्राणि वासुदेवस्य येऽनुगाः ॥७-२६-११॥
daśaiva tu sahasrāṇi trigartānāṃ narādhipa। catvāri tu sahasrāṇi vāsudevasya ye'nugāḥ ॥7-26-11॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; त्रिगर्तानां (trigartānāṃ) - of the Trigartas; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; चत्वारि (catvāri) - four; तु (tu) - but; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vasudeva; ये (ye) - who; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers;]
(Ten thousand indeed of the Trigartas, O king; but four thousand of Vasudeva's followers.)

दार्यमाणां चमूं दृष्ट्वा भगदत्तेन मारिष। आहूयमानस्य च तैरभवद्धृदयं द्विधा ॥७-२६-१२॥
dāryamāṇāṃ camūṃ dṛṣṭvā bhagadattena māriṣa। āhūyamānasya ca tairabhavaddhṛdayaṃ dvidhā ॥7-26-12॥
[दार्यमाणां (dāryamāṇāṃ) - being torn apart; चमूं (camūṃ) - army; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भगदत्तेन (bhagadattena) - by Bhagadatta; मारिष (māriṣa) - O great one; आहूयमानस्य (āhūyamānasya) - being called; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; द्विधा (dvidhā) - split in two;]
(O great one, having seen the army being torn apart by Bhagadatta, and being called by them, the heart became split in two.)

किं नु श्रेयस्करं कर्म भवेदिति विचिन्तयन्। इतो वा विनिवर्तेयं गच्छेयं वा युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७-२६-१३॥
kiṁ nu śreyaskaraṁ karma bhavediti vicintayan। ito vā vinivarteyaṁ gaccheyaṁ vā yudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-26-13॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; श्रेयस्करं (śreyaskaraṁ) - auspicious; कर्म (karma) - action; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; इति (iti) - thus; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - pondering; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; वा (vā) - or; विनिवर्तेयम् (vinivarteyam) - I should return; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṁ) - I should go; वा (vā) - or; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira;]

Pondering over what would be the most auspicious action, he thought whether he should return from there or proceed to Yudhishthira.
तस्य बुद्ध्या विचार्यैतदर्जुनस्य कुरूद्वह। अभवद्भूयसी बुद्धिः संशप्तकवधे स्थिरा ॥७-२६-१४॥
tasya buddhyā vicāryaitadarjunasya kurūdvaha। abhavadbhūyasī buddhiḥ saṃśaptakavādhe sthirā ॥7-26-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by wisdom; विचार्य (vicārya) - considering; एतत् (etat) - this; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O descendant of Kuru; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भूयसी (bhūyasī) - greater; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; संशप्तकवधे (saṃśaptakavādhe) - in killing the Samsaptakas; स्थिरा (sthirā) - firm;]
(By his wisdom, considering this, O descendant of Kuru, Arjuna's intelligence became greater and firm in killing the Samsaptakas.)
By contemplating with his wisdom, Arjuna, O descendant of Kuru, resolved with greater determination to slay the Samsaptakas.
स संनिवृत्तः सहसा कपिप्रवरकेतनः। एको रथसहस्राणि निहन्तुं वासवी रणे ॥७-२६-१५॥
sa saṃnivṛttaḥ sahasā kapipravaraketanaḥ। eko rathasahasrāṇi nihantuṃ vāsavī raṇe ॥7-26-15॥
[स (sa) - he; संनिवृत्तः (saṃnivṛttaḥ) - returned; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; कपिप्रवरकेतनः (kapipravaraketanaḥ) - with the banner of the best of monkeys; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; रथसहस्राणि (rathasahasrāṇi) - thousands of chariots; निहन्तुम् (nihantum) - to destroy; वासवी (vāsavī) - Indra's (weapon); रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(He returned suddenly with the banner of the best of monkeys, to destroy thousands of chariots with Indra's (weapon) in battle.)

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शतसहस्राणि (śatasahasrāṇi) - hundreds of thousands; शराणां (śarāṇāṃ) - of arrows; नतपर्वणाम् (nataparvaṇām) - bent-jointed; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - releasing; अर्जुने (arjune) - at Arjuna; राजन् (rājan) - O king; संशप्तकमहारथाः (saṃśaptakamahārathāḥ) - the mighty warriors of the Saṃśaptakas;]
(Then, O king, the mighty warriors of the Saṃśaptakas released hundreds of thousands of bent-jointed arrows at Arjuna.)

यदा मोहमनुप्राप्तः सस्वेदश्च जनार्दनः। ततस्तान्प्रायशः पार्थो वज्रास्त्रेण निजघ्निवान् ॥७-२६-२०॥
yadā mohamanuprāptaḥ sasvedaśca janārdanaḥ। tatastānprāyaśaḥ pārtho vajrāstreṇa nijaghnivān ॥7-26-20॥
