so'bhigarjandhanuṣpāṇirjyāṃ vikarṣanpunaḥ punaḥ। tayormahātmanostūrṇaṃ rathāntaramavāpatat ॥7-40-1॥

(Seeing the superhuman paternal and ancestral deed being performed, your people became elated when they saw Kārṣhṇi afflicted by arrows.)

तस्याभिमन्युरायम्य स्मयन्नेकेन पत्रिणा। शिरः प्रच्यावयामास स रथात्प्रापतद्भुवि ॥७-४०-४॥

(Like a karṇikāra flower shaken and agitated by the wind from the tree, having seen his slain brother, O king, Karṇa went into distress.)

विमुखीकृत्य कर्णं तु सौभद्रः कङ्कपत्रिभिः। अन्यानपि महेष्वासांस्तूर्णमेवाभिदुद्रुवे ॥७-४०-६॥

तावकानां तु योधानां वध्यतां निशितैः शरैः। अन्यत्र सैन्धवाद्राजन्न स्म कश्चिदतिष्ठत ॥७-४०-१०॥
tāvakānāṃ tu yodhānāṃ vadhyatāṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। anyatra saindhavādrājanna sma kaścidatiṣṭhata ॥7-40-10॥

सौभद्रस्तु ततः शङ्खं प्रध्माप्य पुरुषर्षभः। शीघ्रमभ्यपतत्सेनां भारतीं भरतर्षभ ॥७-४०-११॥

सौभद्रश्चाद्रवत्सेनां निघ्नन्नश्वरथद्विपान्। व्यचरत्स दिशः सर्वाः प्रदिशश्चाहितान्रुजन् ॥७-४०-२१॥

(The son of Subhadra attacked the army, slaying horses, chariots, and elephants. He moved in all directions and quarters, destroying the enemies.)

तं तदा नानुपश्याम सैन्येन रजसावृतम्। आददानं गजाश्वानां नृणां चायूंषि भारत ॥७-४०-२२॥
taṃ tadā nānupaśyāma sainyena rajasāvṛtam। ādadānaṃ gajāśvānāṃ nṛṇāṃ cāyūṃṣi bhārata ॥7-40-22॥

(Then we do not see that, covered by dust by the army, taking away the lives of elephants, horses, and men, O Bharata.)

क्षणेन भूयोऽपश्याम सूर्यं मध्यंदिने यथा। अभिमन्युं महाराज प्रतपन्तं द्विषद्गणान् ॥७-४०-२३॥
kṣaṇena bhūyo'paśyāma sūryaṃ madhyaṃdine yathā। abhimanyuṃ mahārāja pratapantaṃ dviṣadgaṇān ॥7-40-23॥
