यथा वदसि मे सूत एकस्य बहुभिः सह। सङ्ग्रामं तुमुलं घोरं जयं चैव महात्मनः ॥७-४५-१॥
yathā vadasi me sūta ekasya bahubhiḥ saha। saṅgrāmaṃ tumulaṃ ghoraṃ jayaṃ caiva mahātmanaḥ ॥7-45-1॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; मे (me) - my; सूत (sūta) - charioteer; एकस्य (ekasya) - of one; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; सह (saha) - together; सङ्ग्रामं (saṅgrāmaṃ) - battle; तुमुलं (tumulaṃ) - fierce; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul;]

(They drenched him with arrows like clouds with water on a mountain. And he alone crushed them like the all-pervading wind crushes clouds.)

(Angered indeed, the mighty-armed one, like a serpent struck by a stick, your grandson, O great king, spoke to your grandson.)

(Thus having spoken, then the son of Subhadra, the slayer of enemies, raised the arrow, mighty-armed, released like a serpent.)

स तस्य भुजनिर्मुक्तो लक्ष्मणस्य सुदर्शनम्। सुनसं सुभ्रु केशान्तं शिरोऽहार्षीत्सकुण्डलम् ॥ लक्ष्मणं निहतं दृष्ट्वा हा हेत्युच्चुक्रुशुर्जनाः ॥७-४५-१७॥
sa tasya bhujanirmukto lakṣmaṇasya sudarśanam। sunasaṃ subhru keśāntaṃ śiro'hārṣītsakuṇḍalam ॥ lakṣmaṇaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā hā hetyuccukruśurjanāḥ ॥7-45-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्य (tasya) - his; भुजनिर्मुक्तः (bhujanirmuktaḥ) - from the arm released; लक्ष्मणस्य (lakṣmaṇasya) - of Lakshmana; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - beautiful; सुनसं (sunasaṃ) - with a beautiful nose; सुभ्रु (subhru) - with beautiful eyebrows; केशान्तं (keśāntam) - hair-ending; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; अहार्षीत् (ahārṣīt) - took away; सकुण्डलम् (sakuṇḍalam) - with earrings; लक्ष्मणं (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakshmana; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; हा (hā) - alas; हेतु (hetu) - cause; उच्चुक्रुशुः (uccukruśuḥ) - cried out; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(He took away the beautiful head of Lakshmana, released from his arm, with a beautiful nose, beautiful eyebrows, hair-ending, and with earrings. Seeing Lakshmana slain, the people cried out, 'Alas, cause!')
He severed the beautiful head of Lakshmana from his body, which had a charming nose, lovely eyebrows, and adorned with earrings. Upon seeing Lakshmana slain, the people cried out in despair, 'Alas, what a tragedy!'

tato duryodhanaḥ kruddhaḥ priye putre nipātite। hatainamiti cukrośa kṣatriyānkṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ॥7-45-18॥

(Then Duryodhana, angry, cried out to the warriors, "Kill him, the dear son has fallen.")
