दुर्योधनेनैवमुक्तो द्रौणिराहवदुर्मदः। प्रत्युवाच महाबाहो यथा वदसि कौरव ॥७-१३५-१॥
duryodhanenaivamukto drauṇirāhavadurmadaḥ। pratyuvāca mahābāho yathā vadāsi kaurava ॥7-135-1॥

(The Pandavas are indeed dear to me and to my father always. Similarly, we both are dear to them, but not in battle, O scion of Kuru. We fight to the best of our ability, dear, having abandoned our lives fearlessly.)

अहं कर्णश्च शल्यश्च कृपो हार्दिक्य एव च। निमेषात्पाण्डवीं सेनां क्षपयेम नृपोत्तम ॥७-१३५-३॥
ahaṁ karṇaśca śalyaśca kṛpo hārdikya eva ca। nimeṣātpāṇḍavīṁ senāṁ kṣapayema nṛpottama ॥7-135-3॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; च (ca) - and; शल्यः (śalyaḥ) - Śalya; च (ca) - and; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; हार्दिक्यः (hārdikyaḥ) - Hārdikya; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; निमेषात् (nimeṣāt) - in a moment; पाण्डवीं (pāṇḍavīm) - of the Pāṇḍavas; सेनाम् (senām) - army; क्षपयेम (kṣapayema) - we can destroy; नृपोत्तम (nṛpottama) - O best of kings;]
(I, Karṇa, Śalya, Kṛpa, and Hārdikya indeed, O best of kings, can destroy the army of the Pāṇḍavas in a moment.)
I, along with Karṇa, Śalya, Kṛpa, and Hārdikya, can annihilate the Pāṇḍava army in an instant, O greatest of kings.
ते चापि कौरवीं सेनां निमेषार्धात्कुरूद्वह। क्षपयेयुर्महाबाहो न स्याम यदि संयुगे ॥७-१३५-४॥
te cāpi kauravīṃ senāṃ nimeṣārdhātkurūdvaha। kṣapayeyurmahābāho na syāma yadi saṃyuge ॥7-135-4॥
[ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौरवीं (kauravīm) - of the Kauravas; सेनां (senām) - army; निमेषार्धात् (nimeṣārdhāt) - in half a blink of an eye; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O descendant of Kuru; क्षपयेयुः (kṣapayeyuḥ) - could destroy; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; न (na) - not; स्याम (syāma) - would be; यदि (yadi) - if; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(They also, O descendant of Kuru, could destroy the army of the Kauravas in half a blink of an eye, O mighty-armed one, if we were not in battle.)
They too, O descendant of Kuru, could annihilate the Kaurava army in an instant, O mighty-armed one, if we were not engaged in battle.
युध्यतां पाण्डवाञ्शक्त्या तेषां चास्मान्युयुत्सताम्। तेजस्तु तेज आसाद्य प्रशमं याति भारत ॥७-१३५-५॥
yudhyatāṃ pāṇḍavāñśaktyā teṣāṃ cāsmānyuyutsatām। tejastu teja āsādya praśamaṃ yāti bhārata ॥7-135-5॥
[युध्यतां (yudhyatāṃ) - of those fighting; पाण्डवाञ्शक्त्या (pāṇḍavāñśaktyā) - with the strength of the Pandavas; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; च (ca) - and; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; युयुत्सताम् (yuyutsatām) - those desiring to fight; तेजः (tejaḥ) - brilliance; तु (tu) - but; तेजः (tejaḥ) - brilliance; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; प्रशमं (praśamam) - peace; याति (yāti) - goes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Of those fighting with the strength of the Pandavas and those desiring to fight us, brilliance, having attained brilliance, goes to peace, O Bharata.)
The brilliance of those fighting with the strength of the Pandavas and those desiring to fight us ultimately leads to peace, O Bharata.
अशक्या तरसा जेतुं पाण्डवानामनीकिनी। जीवत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु तद्धि सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥७-१३५-६॥
aśakyā tarasā jetuṃ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinī। jīvatsu pāṇḍuputreṣu taddhi satyaṃ bravīmi te ॥7-135-6॥
[अशक्या (aśakyā) - impossible; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अनीकिनी (anīkinī) - army; जीवत्सु (jīvatsu) - while living; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍuputreṣu) - among the sons of Pandu; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(It is impossible to conquer the army of the Pandavas by force while the sons of Pandu are alive. Indeed, I speak this truth to you.)
"It is indeed impossible to conquer the army of the Pandavas by force as long as the sons of Pandu are alive. This is the truth I tell you."
आत्मार्थं युध्यमानास्ते समर्थाः पाण्डुनन्दनाः। किमर्थं तव सैन्यानि न हनिष्यन्ति भारत ॥७-१३५-७॥
ātmārthaṃ yudhyamānāste samarthāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ। kimarthaṃ tava sainyāni na haniṣyanti bhārata ॥7-135-7॥
[आत्मार्थम् (ātmārtham) - for own purpose; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; ते (te) - they; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; पाण्डुनन्दनाः (pāṇḍunandanāḥ) - sons of Pandu; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - why; तव (tava) - your; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; न (na) - not; हनिष्यन्ति (haniṣyanti) - will kill; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(For their own purpose, they, the capable sons of Pandu, are fighting. Why will your armies not kill, O Bharata?)
The capable sons of Pandu are fighting for their own purpose. Why would your armies not kill, O Bharata?
त्वं हि लुब्धतमो राजन्निकृतिज्ञश्च कौरव। सर्वातिशङ्की मानी च ततोऽस्मानतिशङ्कसे ॥७-१३५-८॥
tvaṁ hi lubdhatamo rājannikṛtijñaśca kaurava। sarvātiśaṅkī mānī ca tato'smānatiśaṅkase ॥7-135-8॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; लुब्धतमः (lubdhatamaḥ) - most greedy; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निकृतिज्ञः (nikṛtijñaḥ) - deceitful; च (ca) - and; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava; सर्वातिशङ्की (sarvātiśaṅkī) - suspicious of everyone; मानी (mānī) - proud; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अतिशङ्कसे (atiśaṅkase) - you suspect;]
(You indeed are the most greedy, O king, deceitful and Kaurava, suspicious of everyone, proud, and therefore you suspect us.)
"O King Kaurava, you are indeed the greediest and most deceitful, suspicious of everyone and proud, and therefore you suspect us."
अहं तु यत्नमास्थाय त्वदर्थे त्यक्तजीवितः। एष गच्छामि सङ्ग्रामं त्वत्कृते कुरुनन्दन ॥७-१३५-९॥
ahaṁ tu yatnam āsthāya tvadarthe tyaktajīvitaḥ। eṣa gacchāmi saṅgrāmaṁ tvatkṛte kurunandana ॥7-135-9॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तु (tu) - but; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having undertaken; त्वदर्थे (tvadarthe) - for your sake; त्यक्तजीवितः (tyaktajīvitaḥ) - having renounced life; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - to battle; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for you; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(I, having undertaken effort for your sake and having renounced life, go to battle for you, O joy of the Kurus.)
I am making every effort for your sake, having given up my life. I am going to the battle for you, O joy of the Kurus.
योत्स्येऽहं शत्रुभिः सार्धं जेष्यामि च वरान्वरान्। पाञ्चालैः सह योत्स्यामि सोमकैः केकयैस्तथा ॥ पाण्डवेयैश्च सङ्ग्रामे त्वत्प्रियार्थमरिंदम ॥७-१३५-१०॥
yotsye'haṁ śatrubhiḥ sārdhaṁ jeṣyāmi ca varānvarān। pāñcālaiḥ saha yotsyāmi somakaiḥ kekayaistathā ॥ pāṇḍaveyaiśca saṅgrāme tvatpriyārthamariṁdama ॥7-135-10॥
[योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I will fight; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - with enemies; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together; जेष्यामि (jeṣyāmi) - I will conquer; च (ca) - and; वरान् (varān) - excellent ones; वरान् (varān) - excellent ones; पाञ्चालैः (pāñcālaiḥ) - with the Pāñcālas; सह (saha) - together; योत्स्यामि (yotsyāmi) - I will fight; सोमकैः (somakaiḥ) - with the Somakas; केकयैः (kekayaiḥ) - with the Kekayas; तथा (tathā) - also; पाण्डवेयैः (pāṇḍaveyaiḥ) - with the sons of Pandu; च (ca) - and; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रियार्थम् (priyārtham) - for the sake of pleasing; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(I will fight with enemies together and will conquer excellent ones. Together with the Pāñcālas, I will fight with the Somakas and the Kekayas. Also, with the sons of Pandu in battle for your sake, O subduer of enemies.)
I will engage in battle with the enemies and conquer the best of them. Alongside the Pāñcālas, I will fight with the Somakas and the Kekayas, and also with the sons of Pandu, all for your sake, O subduer of enemies.
अद्य मद्बाणनिर्दग्धाः पाञ्चालाः सोमकास्तथा। सिंहेनेवार्दिता गावो विद्रविष्यन्ति सर्वतः ॥७-१३५-११॥
adya madbāṇanirdagdhāḥ pāñcālāḥ somakāstathā। siṃhenevārdhitā gāvo vidraviṣyanti sarvataḥ ॥7-135-11॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; मद्बाणनिर्दग्धाः (madbāṇanirdagdhāḥ) - burned by my arrows; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Panchalas; सोमकाः (somakāḥ) - Somakas; तथा (tathā) - and; सिंहेन (siṃhena) - by a lion; इव (iva) - like; आर्दिताः (arditāḥ) - afflicted; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; विद्रविष्यन्ति (vidraviṣyanti) - will flee; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - in all directions;]
(Today, the Panchalas and Somakas, burned by my arrows, like cows afflicted by a lion, will flee in all directions.)
Today, the Panchalas and Somakas, scorched by my arrows, will scatter everywhere like cows chased by a lion.
अद्य धर्मसुतो राजा दृष्ट्वा मम पराक्रमम्। अश्वत्थाममयं लोकं मंस्यते सह सोमकैः ॥७-१३५-१२॥
adya dharmasuto rājā dṛṣṭvā mama parākramam। aśvatthāmamayaṃ lokaṃ maṃsyate saha somakaiḥ ॥7-135-12॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - son of Dharma; राजा (rājā) - king; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मम (mama) - my; पराक्रमम् (parākramam) - valor; अश्वत्थामम् (aśvatthāmam) - Ashwatthama; अयम् (ayam) - this; लोकम् (lokam) - world; मंस्यते (maṃsyate) - will consider; सह (saha) - with; सोमकैः (somakaiḥ) - Somakas;]
(Today, the son of Dharma, the king, having seen my valor, will consider Ashwatthama as this world along with the Somakas.)
Today, King Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, upon witnessing my valor, will regard Ashwatthama as the world itself, along with the Somakas.
आगमिष्यति निर्वेदं धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। दृष्ट्वा विनिहतान्सङ्ख्ये पाञ्चालान्सोमकैः सह ॥७-१३५-१३॥
āgamiṣyati nirvedaṃ dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dṛṣṭvā vinihatānsankhye pāñcālānsomakaiḥ saha ॥7-135-13॥
[आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - will attain; निर्वेदं (nirvedaṃ) - dispassion; धर्मपुत्रः (dharmaputraḥ) - son of Dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विनिहतान् (vinihatān) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - Panchalas; सोमकैः (somakaiḥ) - with Somakas; सह (saha) - together;]
(The son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, will attain dispassion, having seen the Panchalas and Somakas slain in battle.)
Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, will become dispassionate after witnessing the slaughter of the Panchalas and Somakas in the battle.
ये मां युद्धेऽभियोत्स्यन्ति तान्हनिष्यामि भारत। न हि ते वीर मुच्येरन्मद्बाह्वन्तरमागताः ॥७-१३५-१४॥
ye māṁ yuddhe'bhiyotsyanti tān haniṣyāmi bhārata। na hi te vīra mucyeran madbāhvantaramāgatāḥ ॥7-135-14॥
[ये (ye) - those who; माम् (mām) - me; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; अभियोत्स्यन्ति (abhiyotsyanti) - will challenge; तान् (tān) - them; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will slay; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; वीर (vīra) - heroes; मुच्येरन् (mucyeran) - will escape; मद् (mad) - my; बाहु (bāhu) - arms; अन्तरम् (antaram) - within; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - having come;]
(Those who will challenge me in battle, I will slay them, O Bharata. Indeed, those heroes will not escape having come within my arms.)
"O Bharata, those who dare to challenge me in battle, I shall slay them. Indeed, once they come within the reach of my arms, those heroes will not escape."
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः पुत्रं दुर्योधनं तव। अभ्यवर्तत युद्धाय द्रावयन्सर्वधन्विनः ॥ चिकीर्षुस्तव पुत्राणां प्रियं प्राणभृतां वरः ॥७-१३५-१५॥
evamuktvā mahābāhuḥ putraṃ duryodhanaṃ tava। abhyavartata yuddhāya drāvayansarvadhanvinaḥ ॥ cikīrṣustava putrāṇāṃ priyaṃ prāṇabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥7-135-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; तव (tava) - your; अभ्यवर्तत (abhyavartata) - advanced; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; द्रावयन् (drāvayan) - driving away; सर्वधन्विनः (sarvadhanvinaḥ) - all archers; चिकीर्षुः (cikīrṣuḥ) - desiring to do; तव (tava) - your; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; प्राणभृताम् (prāṇabhṛtām) - of living beings; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Thus, having spoken, the mighty-armed advanced your son Duryodhana for battle, driving away all archers, desiring to do what is dear to your sons, the best of living beings.)
Thus, having spoken, the mighty-armed warrior advanced your son Duryodhana to the battlefield, driving away all the archers, with the intent to fulfill the wishes of your sons, the best among living beings.
ततोऽब्रवीत्सकैकेयान्पाञ्चालान्गौतमीसुतः। प्रहरध्वमितः सर्वे मम गात्रे महारथाः ॥ स्थिरीभूताश्च युध्यध्वं दर्शयन्तोऽस्त्रलाघवम् ॥७-१३५-१६॥
tato'bravītsakaikeyānpāñcālāngautamīsutaḥ। praharadhvamitaḥ sarve mama gātre mahārathāḥ ॥ sthirībhūtāśca yudhyadhvaṃ darśayanto'stralāghavam ॥7-135-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सकैकेयान् (sakaikeyān) - with the Kaikeyas; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Panchalas; गौतमीसुतः (gautamīsutaḥ) - son of Gautami; प्रहरध्वम् (praharadhvam) - attack; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मम (mama) - my; गात्रे (gātre) - body; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; स्थिरीभूताः (sthirībhūtāḥ) - steadfast; च (ca) - and; युध्यध्वम् (yudhyadhvam) - fight; दर्शयन्तः (darśayantaḥ) - showing; अस्त्रलाघवम् (astralāghavam) - skill in weapons;]
(Then the son of Gautami said to the Kaikeyas and the Panchalas: "Attack from here, all you great warriors, on my body. Be steadfast and fight, showing your skill in weapons.")
Then the son of Gautami addressed the Kaikeyas and the Panchalas, urging them to attack from that position, all the great warriors, upon his body. He encouraged them to remain steadfast and demonstrate their skill in weaponry.
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे शस्त्रवृष्टिमपातयन्। द्रौणिं प्रति महाराज जलं जलधरा इव ॥७-१३५-१७॥
evamuktāstu te sarve śastravṛṣṭimapātayan। drauṇiṃ prati mahārāja jalaṃ jaladharā iva ॥7-135-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapons; वृष्टिम् (vṛṣṭim) - rain; अपातयन् (apātayan) - caused to fall; द्रौणिम् (drauṇim) - at Aśvatthāmā; प्रति (prati) - towards; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जलम् (jalam) - water; जलधराः (jaladharāḥ) - clouds; इव (iva) - like;]
(Thus addressed, all of them caused a rain of weapons to fall at Aśvatthāmā, O great king, like clouds release water.)
Having been addressed in this manner, all the warriors unleashed a torrent of weapons upon Aśvatthāmā, resembling clouds pouring down rain, O great king.
तान्निहत्य शरान्द्रौणिर्दश वीरानपोथयत्। प्रमुखे पाण्डुपुत्राणां धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चाभिभो ॥७-१३५-१८॥
tānnihatya śarāndrauṇirdaśa vīrānapothayat। pramukhe pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cābhibho ॥7-135-18॥
[तान् (tān) - them; निहत्य (nihatya) - having killed; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drona's son; दश (daśa) - ten; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; अपोथयत् (apothayat) - crushed; प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in front of; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the Pandavas; धृष्टद्युम्नस्य (dhṛṣṭadyumnasya) - of Dhrishtadyumna; च (ca) - and; अभिभो (abhibho) - O lord;]
(Having killed them with arrows, Drona's son crushed ten heroes in front of the Pandavas and Dhrishtadyumna, O lord.)
Drona's son, having slain them with arrows, crushed ten heroes before the Pandavas and Dhrishtadyumna, O lord.
ते हन्यमानाः समरे पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयास्तथा। परित्यज्य रणे द्रौणिं व्यद्रवन्त दिशो दश ॥७-१३५-१९॥
te hanyamānāḥ samare pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāstathā। parityajya raṇe drauṇiṃ vyadravanta diśo daśa ॥7-135-19॥

(Whoever among the sons of Pṛthā you hate, and whichever devotion you have among the Kauravas, show that, being steady, you will not be released alive by me.)

(Who indeed, abandoning Brahminhood, engages in Kshatriya duties, that Brahmin is deserving of death by all people, just as you, worst among men.)
A Brahmin who forsakes his Brahminhood and engages in the duties of a Kshatriya is deserving of death by all people, just as you are, the worst among men.
