Core and Pancharatra: Yudhishthira and Bhimasena come to the rescue and repel the attack by Ashwatthama. When Drona comes to his rescue, Arjuna fights him, making the Kaurava army to retreat.

(Then King Duryodhana, surrounded by Bharadvaja, approached the Pandavas in battle; then the battle ensued, taking a terrible form, O great king, increasing the fear of the fearful.)
Then King Duryodhana, accompanied by Bharadvaja, advanced towards the Pandavas in the battlefield. The battle that followed was terrifying, O great king, and it heightened the fear among the timid.
अम्बष्ठान्मालवान्वङ्गाञ्शिबींस्त्रैगर्तकानपि। प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय गणान्क्रुद्धो युधिष्ठिरः ॥७-१३६-३॥

(Yudhishthira, angry, sent the Ambashthas, Malavas, Vangas, Shibis, and Trigartas to the world of death.)
In his anger, Yudhishthira sent the troops of the Ambashthas, Malavas, Vangas, Shibis, and Trigartas to the realm of death.
अभीषाहाञ्शूरसेनान्क्षत्रियान्युद्धदुर्मदान्। निकृत्य पृथिवीं चक्रे भीमः शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥७-१३६-४॥
abhīṣāhāñ śūrasenān kṣatriyān yuddhadurmadān। nikṛtya pṛthivīṃ cakre bhīmaḥ śoṇitakardamām ॥7-136-4॥

(Bhima, having destroyed the fierce Shurasena Kshatriyas arrogant in battle, made the earth muddy with blood.)
Bhima defeated the fierce and arrogant Shurasena Kshatriyas in battle, leaving the earth soaked with blood.
यौधेयारट्टराजन्यान्मद्रकांश्च गणान्युधि। प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय किरीटी निशितैः शरैः ॥७-१३६-५॥
yaudheyāraṭṭarājanyān madrakāṃś ca gaṇān yudhi। prāhiṇon mṛtyulokāya kirīṭī niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥7-136-5॥
[यौधेय (yaudheya) - Yaudheyas; अरट्ट (araṭṭa) - Arattas; राजन्य (rājanya) - Kshatriyas; मद्रकान् (madrakān) - Madras; च (ca) - and; गणान् (gaṇān) - tribes; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; मृत्युलोकाय (mṛtyulokāya) - to the world of death; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a crown; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows;]
(The one with a crown sent the Yaudheyas, Arattas, Kshatriyas, Madras, and tribes to the world of death in battle with sharp arrows.)
The crowned warrior dispatched the Yaudheyas, Arattas, Kshatriyas, Madras, and other tribes to the realm of death using his sharp arrows in the battle.
प्रगाढमञ्जोगतिभिर्नाराचैरभिपीडिताः। निपेतुर्द्विरदा भूमौ द्विशृङ्गा इव पर्वताः ॥७-१३६-६॥
pragāḍhamañjogatibhirnārācairabhipīḍitāḥ। nipeturdviradā bhūmau dviśṛṅgā iva parvatāḥ ॥7-136-6॥

(Oppressed by deeply graceful movements with arrows, the elephants fell down on the ground like two-peaked mountains.)

निकृत्तैर्हस्तिहस्तैश्च लुठमानैस्ततस्ततः। रराज वसुधा कीर्णा विसर्पद्भिरिवोरगैः ॥७-१३६-७॥
nikṛttair hastihastaiś ca luṭhamānais tatas tataḥ। rarāja vasudhā kīrṇā visarpadbhir ivoragaiḥ ॥7-136-7॥

(The earth shone, strewn with cut-off elephant trunks rolling here and there, like crawling snakes.)
The battlefield was a gruesome sight, with the earth appearing to shine as it was covered with severed elephant trunks rolling around, resembling crawling snakes.
क्षिप्तैः कनकचित्रैश्च नृपच्छत्रैः क्षितिर्बभौ। द्यौरिवादित्यचन्द्राद्यैर्ग्रहैः कीर्णा युगक्षये ॥७-१३६-८॥
kṣiptaiḥ kanakacitraiśca nṛpacchatraiḥ kṣitirbabhau। dyaurivādityacandrādyairgrahaiḥ kīrṇā yugakṣaye ॥7-136-8॥
[क्षिप्तैः (kṣiptaiḥ) - thrown; कनकचित्रैः (kanakacitraiḥ) - with golden and painted; च (ca) - and; नृपच्छत्रैः (nṛpacchatraiḥ) - with royal umbrellas; क्षितिः (kṣitiḥ) - the earth; बभौ (babhau) - shone; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - the sky; इव (iva) - like; आदित्यचन्द्राद्यैः (ādityacandrādyaiḥ) - with the sun, moon, and others; ग्रहैः (grahaiḥ) - with planets; कीर्णा (kīrṇā) - scattered; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of an age;]
(The earth shone with royal umbrellas thrown with golden and painted, like the sky scattered with the sun, moon, and planets at the end of an age.)
The earth was adorned with royal umbrellas, beautifully decorated with gold and colors, resembling the sky filled with celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and planets at the end of an era.
हत प्रहरताभीता विध्यत व्यवकृन्तत। इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दः शोणाश्वस्य रथं प्रति ॥७-१३६-९॥
hata praharatābhītā vidhyata vyavakṛntata। ityāsīt tumulaḥ śabdaḥ śoṇāśvasya rathaṃ prati ॥7-136-9॥
[हत (hata) - killed; प्रहरताभीता (praharatābhītā) - striking and fearing; विध्यत (vidhyata) - piercing; व्यवकृन्तत (vyavakṛntata) - cutting; इति (iti) - thus; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; तुमुलः (tumulaḥ) - a tumultuous; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; शोणाश्वस्य (śoṇāśvasya) - of Shonashva; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Killed, striking and fearing, piercing, cutting. Thus there was a tumultuous sound towards the chariot of Shonashva.)

द्रोणस्तु परमक्रुद्धो वायव्यास्त्रेण संयुगे। व्यधमत्तान्यथा वायुर्मेघानिव दुरत्ययः ॥७-१३६-१०॥
droṇastu paramakruddho vāyavyāstreṇa saṃyuge। vyadhamattānyathā vāyurmeghāniva duratyayaḥ ॥7-136-10॥
[द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; तु (tu) - but; परम (parama) - extremely; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; वायव्य (vāyavya) - of the wind; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with the weapon; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in the battle; व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - dispersed; तानि (tāni) - them; अथ (atha) - like; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the wind; मेघान् (meghān) - clouds; इव (iva) - as; दुरत्ययः (duratyayaḥ) - unstoppable;]
(But Drona, extremely angry, with the weapon of the wind in the battle, dispersed them like the unstoppable wind disperses clouds.)

ते हन्यमाना द्रोणेन पाञ्चालाः प्राद्रवन्भयात्। पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः ॥७-१३६-११॥
te hanyamānā droṇena pāñcālāḥ prādravanbhayāt। paśyato bhīmasenasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥7-136-11॥
[ते (te) - they; हन्यमाना (hanyamānā) - being killed; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - fled; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - watching; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great soul;]
(They, being killed by Droṇa, the Pāñcālas fled out of fear, while being watched by the great souls Bhīmasena and Pārtha.)
The Pāñcālas, struck with fear and being slain by Droṇa, fled while being observed by the noble Bhīmasena and Arjuna.
ततः किरीटी भीमश्च सहसा संन्यवर्तताम्। महता रथवंशेन परिगृह्य बलं तव ॥७-१३६-१२॥

(Then Arjuna and Bhima suddenly turned back, surrounding your army with a great chariot division.)

बीभत्सुर्दक्षिणं पार्श्वमुत्तरं तु वृकोदरः। भारद्वाजं शरौघाभ्यां महद्भ्यामभ्यवर्षताम् ॥७-१३६-१३॥
bībhatsurdakṣiṇaṃ pārśvamutttaraṃ tu vṛkodaraḥ। bhāradvājaṃ śaraughābhyāṃ mahadbhāmabhyavarṣatām ॥7-136-13॥

तौ तदा सृञ्जयाश्चैव पाञ्चालाश्च महारथाः। अन्वगच्छन्महाराज मत्स्याश्च सह सोमकैः ॥७-१३६-१४॥

(In the same way, your son's chariot warriors, strikers, together with a great army, went towards Drona's chariot.)

ततः सा भरती सेना वध्यमाना किरीटिना। तमसा निद्रया चैव पुनरेव व्यदीर्यत ॥७-१३६-१६॥
tataḥ sā bharatī senā vadhyamānā kirīṭinā। tamasā nidrayā caiva punareva vyadīryata ॥7-136-16॥

(Then that Bharata's army, being slaughtered by Arjuna, was scattered again indeed by darkness and sleep.)

O great king, despite being restrained by Drona and your son, the warriors could not be stopped at that time.
सा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य शरैर्दार्यमाणा महाचमूः। तमसा संवृते लोके व्यद्रवत्सर्वतोमुखी ॥७-१३६-१८॥
sā pāṇḍuputrasya śarairdāryamāṇā mahācamūḥ। tamasā saṃvṛte loke vyadravatsarvatomukhī ॥7-136-18॥

(She, the great army of the son of Pandu, being pierced by arrows, fled in all directions in the world enveloped by darkness.)
The great army of the Pandavas, pierced by arrows, fled in all directions as the world was enveloped in darkness.
उत्सृज्य शतशो वाहांस्तत्र केचिन्नराधिपाः। प्राद्रवन्त महाराज भयाविष्टाः समन्ततः ॥७-१३६-१९॥
utsṛjya śataśo vāhāṃstatra kecinnarādhipāḥ। prādravanta mahārāja bhayāviṣṭāḥ samantataḥ ॥7-136-19॥

(Having abandoned hundreds of vehicles there, some kings, O great king, fled in all directions, overcome by fear.)
