श्रुत्वा कर्णं हतं युद्धे पुत्रांश्चैवापलायिनः। नरेन्द्रः किञ्चिदाश्वस्तो द्विजश्रेष्ठ किमब्रवीत् ॥८-५-१॥
śrutvā karṇaṃ hataṃ yuddhe putrāṃścaivāpalāyinaḥ। narendraḥ kiñcidāśvasto dvijaśreṣṭha kimabravīt ॥8-5-1॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; हतम् (hatam) - slain; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - fled; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - the king; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; आश्वस्तः (āśvastaḥ) - consoled; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of the twice-born; किम् (kim) - what; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having heard that Karna was slain in battle and the sons had fled, the king, somewhat consoled, said, "O best of the twice-born, what did he say?")
Upon hearing of Karna's death in battle and the retreat of his sons, the king, slightly comforted, asked, "O esteemed sage, what did he say?"
प्राप्तवान्परमं दुःखं पुत्रव्यसनजं महत्। तस्मिन्यदुक्तवान्काले तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥८-५-२॥
prāptavān paramaṃ duḥkhaṃ putravyasanajaṃ mahat। tasmin yad uktavān kāle tan mamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥8-5-2॥
[प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - obtained; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; पुत्रव्यसनजं (putravyasanajaṃ) - born of son's affliction; महत् (mahat) - great; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; यत् (yat) - which; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoken; काले (kāle) - at the time; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - asking;]
(Obtained supreme sorrow born of son's affliction, great. In that which was spoken at the time, tell me that, asking.)
He experienced immense sorrow due to the affliction of his son. Tell me what was said at that time, as I am asking.

श्रुत्वा कर्णस्य निधनमश्रद्धेयमिवाद्भुतम्। भूतसंमोहनं भीमं मेरोः पर्यसनं यथा ॥८-५-३॥
śrutvā karṇasya nidhanamaśraddheyamivādbhutam। bhūtasaṃmohanaṃ bhīmaṃ meroḥ paryasanaṃ yathā ॥8-5-3॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; निधनम् (nidhanam) - death; अश्रद्धेयम् (aśraddheyam) - unbelievable; इव (iva) - as if; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; भूतसंमोहनम् (bhūtasaṃmohanam) - bewildering of beings; भीमम् (bhīmam) - terrible; मेरोः (meroḥ) - of Meru; पर्यसनम् (paryasanam) - overturning; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Having heard of Karna's death, it was as if unbelievable and wonderful, like the bewildering and terrible overturning of Mount Meru.)
Upon hearing of Karna's death, it seemed both unbelievable and astonishing, akin to the terrifying upheaval of Mount Meru.
चित्तमोहमिवायुक्तं भार्गवस्य महामतेः। पराजयमिवेन्द्रस्य द्विषद्भ्यो भीमकर्मणः ॥८-५-४॥
cittamohamivāyuktaṃ bhārgavasya mahāmateḥ। parājayamivendrasya dviṣadbhyo bhīmakarmaṇaḥ ॥8-5-4॥
[चित्त (citta) - mind; मोहम् (moham) - delusion; इव (iva) - like; अयुक्तम् (ayuktam) - unfit; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava; महामतेः (mahāmateḥ) - of great wisdom; पराजयम् (parājayam) - defeat; इव (iva) - like; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; द्विषद्भ्यः (dviṣadbhyaḥ) - by enemies; भीमकर्मणः (bhīmakarmaṇaḥ) - of terrible deeds;]
(Like the delusion of the mind, unfit for Bhārgava of great wisdom; like the defeat of Indra by enemies of terrible deeds.)
It is as if the delusion of the mind is unfit for the wise Bhārgava, just as the defeat of Indra is by enemies of terrible deeds.
दिवः प्रपतनं भानोरुर्व्यामिव महाद्युतेः। संशोषणमिवाचिन्त्यं समुद्रस्याक्षयाम्भसः ॥८-५-५॥
divaḥ prapatanaṃ bhānorurvyāmiva mahādyuteḥ। saṃśoṣaṇamivācintyaṃ samudrasyākṣayāmbhasaḥ ॥8-5-5॥
[दिवः (divaḥ) - of the sky; प्रपतनं (prapatanaṃ) - falling; भानोः (bhānoḥ) - of the sun; उर्व्याम् (urvyām) - on the earth; इव (iva) - like; महाद्युतेः (mahādyuteḥ) - of the great effulgence; संशोषणम् (saṃśoṣaṇam) - drying up; इव (iva) - like; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) - unthinkable; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; अक्षयाम्भसः (akṣayāmbhasaḥ) - of inexhaustible water;]
(The falling of the sun from the sky onto the earth, like the drying up of the ocean of inexhaustible water, is unthinkable.)
The sun falling from the sky to the earth, like the unimaginable drying up of the ocean with inexhaustible waters, is an event of great effulgence.
महीवियद्दिगीशानां सर्वनाशमिवाद्भुतम्। कर्मणोरिव वैफल्यमुभयोः पुण्यपापयोः ॥८-५-६॥
mahīviyaddigīśānāṃ sarvanāśamivādbhutam। karmaṇoriva vaiphalyamubhayoḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ ॥8-5-6॥
[मही (mahī) - earth; वियत् (viyat) - sky; दिगीशानां (digīśānāṃ) - of the lords of directions; सर्वनाशम् (sarvanāśam) - total destruction; इव (iva) - like; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; कर्मणोः (karmaṇoḥ) - of actions; इव (iva) - like; वैफल्यम् (vaiphlyam) - fruitlessness; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; पुण्यपापयोः (puṇyapāpayoḥ) - virtue and sin;]
(Like the total destruction of the earth, sky, and the lords of directions, like the fruitlessness of actions of both virtue and sin.)
It is as if there is a wonderful total destruction of the earth, sky, and the lords of directions, akin to the fruitlessness of actions whether virtuous or sinful.
सञ्चिन्त्य निपुणं बुद्ध्या धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः। नेदमस्तीति सञ्चिन्त्य कर्णस्य निधनं प्रति ॥८-५-७॥
sañcintya nipuṇaṃ buddhyā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ। nedamastīti sañcintya karṇasya nidhanaṃ prati ॥8-5-7॥
[सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; निपुणं (nipuṇam) - carefully; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intelligence; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; जनेश्वरः (janeśvaraḥ) - the lord of people; न (na) - not; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; निधनं (nidhanam) - death; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Having considered carefully with intelligence, Dhritarashtra, the lord of people, thought thus: "This is not" regarding Karna's death.)
Dhritarashtra, the king, after carefully considering with his intellect, concluded that Karna's death was not a reality.
प्राणिनामेतदात्मत्वात्स्यादपीति विनाशनम्। शोकाग्निना दह्यमानो धम्यमान इवाशयः ॥८-५-८॥
prāṇināmetadātmatvātsyādapīti vināśanam। śokāgninā dahyamāno dhamyamāna ivāśayaḥ ॥8-5-8॥

(Due to the nature of self of living beings, there may also be destruction, thus. The mind, as if being burned and tormented by the fire of sorrow.)

विध्वस्तात्मा श्वसन्दीनो हा हेत्युक्त्वा सुदुःखितः। विललाप महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥८-५-९॥
vidhvastātmā śvasandīno hā hetyuktvā suduḥkhitaḥ। vilalāpa mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ॥8-5-9॥

(The distressed soul, sighing deeply, said 'Alas, the cause!' and very sorrowful, lamented the great king Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika.)

सञ्जयाधिरथो वीरः सिंहद्विरदविक्रमः। वृषमप्रतिमस्कन्धो वृषभाक्षगतिस्वनः ॥८-५-१०॥
sañjayādhiratho vīraḥ siṃhadviradavikramaḥ। vṛṣamapratimaskandho vṛṣabhākṣagatisvanaḥ ॥8-5-10॥
[सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; अधिरथः (adhirathaḥ) - charioteer; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; सिंह (siṃha) - lion; द्विरद (dvirada) - elephant; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - stride; वृषम (vṛṣam) - bull; अप्रतिम (apratima) - unmatched; स्कन्धः (skandhaḥ) - shoulder; वृषभ (vṛṣabha) - bull; अक्ष (akṣa) - eye; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound;]
(Sanjaya, the charioteer, hero, with the stride of a lion and elephant, with unmatched shoulders like a bull, with eyes and movement like a bull, and sound.)

वृषभो वृषभस्येव यो युद्धे न निवर्तते। शत्रोरपि महेन्द्रस्य वज्रसंहननो युवा ॥८-५-११॥
vṛṣabho vṛṣabhasyeva yo yuddhe na nivartate। śatrorapi mahendrasya vajrasaṃhanano yuvā ॥8-5-11॥
[वृषभः (vṛṣabhaḥ) - bull; वृषभस्य (vṛṣabhasya) - of the bull; इव (iva) - like; यः (yaḥ) - who; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; न (na) - not; निवर्तते (nivartate) - retreats; शत्रोः (śatroḥ) - of the enemy; अपि (api) - even; महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra; वज्रसंहननः (vajrasaṃhananaḥ) - with a body as strong as a thunderbolt; युवा (yuvā) - young;]
(The bull, like the bull, who does not retreat in battle, even against the enemy of Mahendra, young with a body as strong as a thunderbolt.)
The young warrior, like a bull, never retreats in battle, even against the formidable enemy of Mahendra, possessing a body as strong as a thunderbolt.
यस्य ज्यातलशब्देन शरवृष्टिरवेण च। रथाश्वनरमातङ्गा नावतिष्ठन्ति संयुगे ॥८-५-१२॥
yasya jyātalaśabdena śaravṛṣṭiraveṇa ca। rathāśvanaramātaṅgā nāvatiṣṭhanti saṃyuge ॥8-5-12॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; ज्यातल (jyātala) - bowstring; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; शर (śara) - arrows; वृष्टि (vṛṣṭi) - rain; रवेण (raveṇa) - by the roar; च (ca) - and; रथ (ratha) - chariots; अश्व (aśva) - horses; नर (nara) - men; मातङ्ग (mātaṅga) - elephants; न (na) - not; अवतिष्ठन्ति (avatiṣṭhanti) - stand; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(In which, by the sound of the bowstring and the roar of the rain of arrows, chariots, horses, men, and elephants do not stand in battle.)
In the battle, where the sound of the bowstring and the roar of the arrows' rain are heard, chariots, horses, men, and elephants cannot stand firm.
यमाश्रित्य महाबाहुं द्विषत्सङ्घघ्नमच्युतम्। दुर्योधनोऽकरोद्वैरं पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महाबलैः ॥८-५-१३॥
yamāśritya mahābāhuṃ dviṣatsaṅghaghnamacyutam। duryodhano'karodvairaṃ pāṇḍuputrairmahābalaiḥ ॥8-5-13॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; द्विषत् (dviṣat) - enemies; सङ्घघ्नम् (saṅghaghnam) - destroyer of hosts; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - Acyuta (Krishna); दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍuputraiḥ) - with the sons of Pandu; महाबलैः (mahābalaiḥ) - mighty.;]
(Having resorted to the mighty-armed Acyuta, the destroyer of hosts of enemies, Duryodhana did enmity with the mighty sons of Pandu.)
Relying on the mighty-armed Krishna, the destroyer of enemy hosts, Duryodhana waged enmity against the powerful sons of Pandu.
स कथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कर्णः पार्थेन संयुगे। निहतः पुरुषव्याघ्रः प्रसह्यासह्यविक्रमः ॥८-५-१४॥
sa kathaṁ rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ karṇaḥ pārthena saṁyuge। nihataḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ prasahyāsahyavikramaḥ ॥8-5-14॥

यो नामन्यत वै नित्यमच्युतं न धनञ्जयम्। न वृष्णीनपि तानन्यान्स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः ॥८-५-१५॥
yo nāmanyata vai nityam acyutaṃ na dhanañjayam। na vṛṣṇīn api tān anyān sva-bāhu-balam āśritaḥ ॥8-5-15॥

(The archers with the bows of Vishnu and Arjuna, together unconquered, I alone will cause to fall from the divine chariot in battle.)
The invincible archers with the bows of Vishnu and Arjuna stand together, yet I alone shall bring them down from their divine chariot in battle.
इति यः सततं मन्दमवोचल्लोभमोहितम्। दुर्योधनमपादीनं राज्यकामुकमातुरम् ॥८-५-१७॥
iti yaḥ satataṁ mandamavocal lobhamohitam। duryodhanam apādīnaṁ rājyakāmukam āturam ॥8-5-17॥

(Thus, who always slowly said, deluded by greed, Duryodhana, deprived, desirous of the kingdom, distressed.)

यश्चाजैषीदतिबलानमित्रानपि दुर्जयान्। गान्धारान्मद्रकान्मत्स्यांस्त्रिगर्तांस्तङ्गणाञ्शकान् ॥८-५-१८॥
yaścājaiṣīdatibalānamitrānapi durjayān। gāndhārānmadrakānmat syāṃstrigartāṃstaṅgaṇāñśakān ॥8-5-18॥

उच्चैःश्रवा वरोऽश्वानां राज्ञां वैश्रवणो वरः। वरो महेन्द्रो देवानां कर्णः प्रहरतां वरः ॥८-५-२१॥

dhigjīvitamidaṃ me'dya suhṛddhīnasya sañjaya। adya cāhaṃ daśāmetāṃ gataḥ sañjaya garhitām ॥ kṛpaṇaṃ vartayiṣyāmi śocyaḥ sarvasya mandadhīḥ ॥8-5-36॥

(I only, having been formerly honored by all the worlds, have been disrespected. O charioteer, how will I be able to live again? From sorrow, I have obtained great sorrow and calamity, O Sanjaya.)

[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भीष्मवधे (bhīṣmavadhe) - in the killing of Bhishma; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Drona; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great soul; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remains; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; सूतपुत्रे (sūtaputre) - in the son of a charioteer; हते (hate) - being killed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Therefore, in the killing of Bhishma and also of the great soul Drona, I see no remainder here when the son of a charioteer is killed in battle.)

स हि पारं महानासीत्पुत्राणां मम सञ्जय। युद्धे विनिहतः शूरो विसृजन्सायकान्बहून् ॥८-५-३९॥
sa hi pāraṃ mahān āsīt putrāṇāṃ mama sañjaya। yuddhe vinihataḥ śūro visṛjan sāyakān bahūn ॥8-5-39॥

(Who indeed has any purpose with my life without him, the bull among men? Surely the great warrior fell from the chariot, pierced by arrows.)

(Like the walking on the road of a lame person, like the desire of a poor person, like the intention of Duryodhana, like the water bubbles of a thirsty person.)
The intentions of Duryodhana are as futile as a lame person's attempt to walk, a poor person's desires, or a thirsty person's hope for water bubbles.
अन्यथा चिन्तितं कार्यमन्यथा तत्तु जायते। अहो नु बलवद्दैवं कालश्च दुरतिक्रमः ॥८-५-४५॥
anyathā cintitaṃ kāryamanyathā tattu jāyate। aho nu balavaddaivaṃ kālaśca duratikramaḥ ॥8-5-45॥

पलायमानः कृपणं दीनात्मा दीनपौरुषः। कच्चिन्न निहतः सूत पुत्रो दुःशासनो मम ॥८-५-४६॥
palāyamānaḥ kṛpaṇaṃ dīnātmā dīnapauruṣaḥ। kaccinna nihataḥ sūta putro duḥśāsano mama ॥8-5-46॥

कच्चिन्न नीचाचरितं कृतवांस्तात संयुगे। कच्चिन्न निहतः शूरो यथा न क्षत्रिया हताः ॥८-५-४७॥
kaccinna nīcācaritaṃ kṛtavāṃstāta saṃyuge। kaccinna nihataḥ śūro yathā na kṣatriyā hatāḥ ॥8-5-47॥

युधिष्ठिरस्य वचनं मा युद्धमिति सर्वदा। दुर्योधनो नाभ्यगृह्णान्मूढः पथ्यमिवौषधम् ॥८-५-४८॥

प्रशमाद्धि भवेच्छान्तिर्मदन्तं युद्धमस्तु च। भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुङ्क्ष्व पाण्डुसुतैः सह ॥८-५-५१॥

यथा हि शकुनिं गृह्य छित्त्वा पक्षौ च सञ्जय। विसर्जयन्ति संहृष्टाः क्रीडमानाः कुमारकाः ॥८-५-५४॥

(As indeed, O Sañjaya, having caught a bird and cut its wings, delighted and playing, the boys release it.)

(Depleted, deprived of all wealth, and without relatives, bereft of acquaintances, which direction shall I take, wretched and gone under enemy's control?)

दुर्योधनस्य वृद्ध्यर्थं पृथिवीं योऽजयत्प्रभुः। स जितः पाण्डवैः शूरैः समर्थैर्वीर्यशालिभिः ॥८-५-५७॥

पाण्डवाश्च कथं शूराः प्रत्युदीयुर्महारथम्। सृजन्तं शरवर्षाणि वारिधारा इवाम्बुदम् ॥८-५-१०४॥
pāṇḍavāśca kathaṃ śūrāḥ pratyudīyurmahāratham। sṛjantaṃ śaravarṣāṇi vāridhārā ivāmbudam ॥8-5-104॥

The Pandavas, known for their bravery, confronted the great chariot, which was unleashing a barrage of arrows akin to streams of water pouring from a cloud.
स च सर्पमुखो दिव्यो महेषुप्रवरस्तदा। व्यर्थः कथं समभवत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥८-५-१०५॥
sa ca sarpamukho divyo maheṣupravarastadā। vyarthaḥ kathaṃ samabhavattanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥8-5-105॥

मामकस्यास्य सैन्यस्य हृतोत्सेधस्य सञ्जय। अवशेषं न पश्यामि ककुदे मृदिते सति ॥८-५-१०६॥

तौ हि वीरौ महेष्वासौ मदर्थे कुरुसत्तमौ। भीष्मद्रोणौ हतौ श्रुत्वा को न्वर्थो जीवितेन मे ॥८-५-१०७॥
tau hi vīrau maheṣvāsau madarthe kurusattamau। bhīṣmadroṇau hatau śrutvā ko nv artho jīvitena me ॥8-5-107॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; हि (hi) - indeed; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; महेष्वासौ (maheṣvāsau) - great archers; मदर्थे (madarthe) - for my sake; कुरुसत्तमौ (kurusattamau) - best of the Kurus; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣmadroṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; हतौ (hatau) - slain; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; मे (me) - to me;]
(Those two heroes, the great archers, the best of the Kurus, for my sake, Bhishma and Drona, having been slain, who indeed is the purpose of life to me?)

न मृष्यामि च राधेयं हतमाहवशोभिनम्। यस्य बाह्वोर्बलं तुल्यं कुञ्जराणां शतं शतम् ॥८-५-१०८॥
na mṛṣyāmi ca rādheyaṃ hatamāhavaśobhinam। yasya bāhvor-balaṃ tulyaṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ śataṃ śatam ॥8-5-108॥
[न (na) - not; मृष्यामि (mṛṣyāmi) - I tolerate; च (ca) - and; राधेयं (rādheyaṃ) - Radheya; हतम् (hatam) - slain; आहवशोभिनम् (āhavaśobhinam) - battle-glorious; यस्य (yasya) - whose; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - arms; बलम् (balam) - strength; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; कुञ्जराणाम् (kuñjarāṇām) - of elephants; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; शतम् (śatam) - hundred;]
(I do not tolerate Radheya, the battle-glorious, slain, whose arms' strength is equal to a hundred hundred elephants.)
I cannot bear the thought of Radheya, the illustrious warrior, being killed, for his strength in arms is comparable to that of a hundred hundred elephants.
द्रोणे हते च यद्वृत्तं कौरवाणां परैः सह। सङ्ग्रामे नरवीराणां तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥८-५-१०९॥

(As Karna engaged in battle with the sons of Kunti, and as the slayer of the enemies was pacified in battle, let it be said:)
"As Karna fought alongside the sons of Kunti, and as the slayer of enemies found peace in battle, let it be told."
