सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
प्रत्यागत्य पुनर्जिष्णुरहन्संशप्तकान्बहून्। वक्रानुवक्रगमनादङ्गारक इव ग्रहः ॥८-१४-१॥
Upon returning, Arjuna slew many of the Trigartas, moving in a zigzag and crooked manner, akin to the planet Mars.
पार्थबाणहता राजन्नराश्वरथकुञ्जराः। विचेलुर्बभ्रमुर्नेदुः पेतुर्मम्लुश्च मारिष ॥८-१४-२॥
O King, struck by Arjuna's arrows, the men, horses, chariots, and elephants wavered, wandered, cried out, fell, and withered, O lord.
धुर्यं धुर्यतरान्सूतान्रथांश्च परिसङ्क्षिपन्। पाणीन्पाणिगतं शस्त्रं बाहूनपि शिरांसि च ॥८-१४-३॥
The leaders, greater leaders, charioteers, and chariots were surrounded, along with the hands, weapon held in hand, arms, and heads.
भल्लैः क्षुरैरर्धचन्द्रैर्वत्सदन्तैश्च पाण्डवः। चिच्छेदामित्रवीराणां समरे प्रतियुध्यताम् ॥८-१४-४॥
The Pandava skillfully cut down the enemy warriors who were fighting back in the battle using various types of arrows, including those shaped like razors, half-moons, and calf-teeth.
वाशितार्थे युयुत्सन्तो वृषभा वृषभं यथा। आपतन्त्यर्जुनं शूराः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥८-१४-५॥
For the purpose of battle, like bulls charging a bull, hundreds and thousands of heroes attacked Arjuna.
तेषां तस्य च तद्युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम्। त्रैलोक्यविजये यादृग्दैत्यानां सह वज्रिणा ॥८-१४-६॥
Their battle, along with his, became terrifying, reminiscent of the conquest of the three worlds with the demons and Indra.
तमविध्यत्त्रिभिर्बाणैर्दन्दशूकैरिवाहिभिः। उग्रायुधस्ततस्तस्य शिरः कायादपाहरत् ॥८-१४-७॥
Ugrāyudha shot three serpent-like arrows at him and then beheaded him.
तेऽर्जुनं सर्वतः क्रुद्धा नानाशस्त्रैरवीवृषन्। मरुद्भिः प्रेषिता मेघा हिमवन्तमिवोष्णगे ॥८-१४-८॥
They, in their anger, attacked Arjuna from all directions with various weapons, just as clouds sent by the Maruts would shower upon the Himalayas during the hot season.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य द्विषतां सर्वतोऽर्जुनः। सम्यगस्तैः शरैः सर्वान्सहितानहनद्बहून् ॥८-१४-९॥
Arjuna skillfully countered the enemies' weapons from all directions and slew many of them with his arrows.
छिन्नत्रिवेणुजङ्घेषान्निहतपार्ष्णिसारथीन्। सञ्छिन्नरश्मियोक्त्राक्षान्व्यनुकर्षयुगान्रथान् ॥ विध्वस्तसर्वसंनाहान्बाणैश्चक्रेऽर्जुनस्त्वरन् ॥८-१४-१०॥
Arjuna, in his haste, dismantled the chariots by cutting their three-bamboo legs, striking the heels of the charioteers, severing the reins, yokes, and axles, and dragging the yokes, while destroying all the armor with his arrows.
ते रथास्तत्र विध्वस्ताः परार्ध्या भान्त्यनेकशः। धनिनामिव वेश्मानि हतान्यग्न्यनिलाम्बुभिः ॥८-१४-११॥
The valuable chariots lay destroyed there, shining in various ways, similar to the mansions of the wealthy that are ruined by fire, wind, and water.
द्विपाः सम्भिन्नमर्माणो वज्राशनिसमैः शरैः। पेतुर्गिर्यग्रवेश्मानि वज्रवाताग्निभिर्यथा ॥८-१४-१२॥
The elephants, struck by arrows as powerful as thunderbolts, collapsed on the mountain peaks, resembling a scene of devastation caused by thunder, wind, and fire.
सारोहास्तुरगाः पेतुर्बहवोऽर्जुनताडिताः। निर्जिह्वान्त्राः क्षितौ क्षीणा रुधिरार्द्राः सुदुर्दृशः ॥८-१४-१३॥
Many horses with riders, struck by Arjuna, fell to the ground. They were tongueless, with entrails exposed, exhausted, soaked in blood, and were a horrible sight to behold.
नराश्वनागा नाराचैः संस्यूताः सव्यसाचिना। बभ्रमुश्चस्खलुः पेतुर्नेदुर्मम्लुश्च मारिष ॥८-१४-१४॥
O noble one, men, horses, and elephants, struck by Arjuna's arrows, wandered aimlessly, stumbled, fell, cried out, and fainted.
अणकैश्च शिलाधौतैर्वज्राशनिविषोपमैः। शरैर्निजघ्निवान्पार्थो महेन्द्र इव दानवान् ॥८-१४-१५॥
Arjuna, like Indra, slayed the demons with arrows that were as small stones washed and comparable to thunderbolt weapons and poison.
महार्हवर्माभरणा नानारूपाम्बरायुधाः। सरथाः सध्वजा वीरा हताः पार्थेन शेरते ॥८-१४-१६॥
The heroes, adorned with valuable armor and ornaments, and equipped with various forms of garments and weapons, lie slain by Arjuna, along with their chariots and banners.
विजिताः पुण्यकर्माणो विशिष्टाभिजनश्रुताः। गताः शरीरैर्वसुधामूर्जितैः कर्मभिर्दिवम् ॥८-१४-१७॥
Those who have conquered are virtuous, distinguished by noble birth and learning. They have ascended to heaven with powerful bodies and deeds performed on earth.
अथार्जुनरथं वीरास्त्वदीयाः समुपाद्रवन्। नानाजनपदाध्यक्षाः सगणा जातमन्यवः ॥८-१४-१८॥
Then your heroes, along with various regional leaders and their groups, approached Arjuna's chariot in anger.
उह्यमाना रथाश्वैस्ते पत्तयश्च जिघांसवः। समभ्यधावन्नस्यन्तो विविधं क्षिप्रमायुधम् ॥८-१४-१९॥
The foot-soldiers, carried by chariot-horses and eager to conquer, swiftly rushed forward, hurling various weapons.
तदायुधमहावर्षं क्षिप्तं योधमहाम्बुदैः। व्यधमन्निशितैर्बाणैः क्षिप्रमर्जुनमारुतः ॥८-१४-२०॥
The great shower of weapons hurled by the warriors, resembling massive clouds, was swiftly dispersed by Arjuna with his sharp arrows, like the wind scattering clouds.
साश्वपत्तिद्विपरथं महाशस्त्रौघमप्लवम्। सहसा सन्तितीर्षन्तं पार्थं शस्त्रास्त्रसेतुना ॥८-१४-२१॥
Arjuna, with his army of horses, infantry, elephants, and chariots, faced an impassable flood of great weapons. In a sudden move, he attempted to cross it using a bridge made of weapons and missiles.
अथाब्रवीद्वासुदेवः पार्थं किं क्रीडसेऽनघ। संशप्तकान्प्रमथ्यैतांस्ततः कर्णवधे त्वर ॥८-१४-२२॥
Then Vasudeva said to Arjuna, "O sinless one, why are you wasting time? Defeat these Samsaptakas and then quickly proceed to kill Karna."
तथेत्युक्त्वार्जुनः क्षिप्रं शिष्टान्संशप्तकांस्तदा। आक्षिप्य शस्त्रेण बलाद्दैत्यानिन्द्र इवावधीत् ॥८-१४-२३॥
After speaking thus, Arjuna swiftly attacked and defeated the remaining Samsaptakas with his weapon, just as Indra once vanquished the demons.
आदधत्संदधन्नेषून्दृष्टः कैश्चिद्रणेऽर्जुनः। विमुञ्चन्वा शराञ्शीघ्रं दृश्यते स्म हि कैरपि ॥८-१४-२४॥
Arjuna was observed by some in the battle either taking and fixing arrows or quickly releasing them.
आश्चर्यमिति गोविन्दो ब्रुवन्नश्वानचोदयत्। हंसांसगौरास्ते सेनां हंसाः सर इवाविशन् ॥८-१४-२५॥
Govinda, expressing wonder, urged the horses forward. The white swans entered the army like they would a lake.
ततः सङ्ग्रामभूमिं तां वर्तमाने जनक्षये। अवेक्षमाणो गोविन्दः सव्यसाचिनमब्रवीत् ॥८-१४-२६॥
Then, as Govinda observed the battlefield where the destruction of people was taking place, he spoke to Arjuna.
एष पार्थ महारौद्रो वर्तते भरतक्षयः। पृथिव्यां पार्थिवानां वै दुर्योधनकृते महान् ॥८-१४-२७॥
This greatly terrible destruction of the Bharatas is happening, O son of Pritha, on earth, indeed because of Duryodhana, great.
पश्य भारत चापानि रुक्मपृष्ठानि धन्विनाम्। महतामपविद्धानि कलापानिषुधीस्तथा ॥८-१४-२८॥
Behold, O Bharata, the bows with golden backs belonging to the great archers, along with their scattered quivers and arrows.
जातरूपमयैः पुङ्खैः शरांश्च नतपर्वणः। तैलधौतांश्च नाराचान्निर्मुक्तानिव पन्नगान् ॥८-१४-२९॥
Arrows with golden feathers and bent joints, and iron arrows anointed with oil, were released like serpents.
हस्तिदन्तत्सरून्खड्गाञ्जातरूपपरिष्कृतान्। आकीर्णांस्तोमरांश्चापांश्चित्रान्हेमविभूषितान् ॥८-१४-३०॥
The place was adorned with elephant ivory, swords, and gold, filled with spears and bows, all beautifully variegated and ornamented with gold.
वर्माणि चापविद्धानि रुक्मपृष्ठानि भारत। सुवर्णविकृतान्प्रासाञ्शक्तीः कनकभूषिताः ॥८-१४-३१॥
O Bharata, the armors pierced with golden backs, and the javelins and spears made and adorned with gold.
जाम्बूनदमयैः पट्टैर्बद्धाश्च विपुला गदाः। जातरूपमयीश्चर्ष्टीः पट्टिशान्हेमभूषितान् ॥८-१४-३२॥
The large maces, bound with golden cloths, and the spears and swords, all made of pure gold and adorned with gold, were present.
दण्डैः कनकचित्रैश्च विप्रविद्धान्परश्वधान्। अयस्कुशान्तान्पतितान्मुसलानि गुरूणि च ॥८-१४-३३॥
The scene was filled with staffs adorned with gold, scattered axes, iron-tipped and fallen clubs, all heavy and imposing.
शतघ्नीः पश्य चित्राश्च विपुलान्परिघांस्तथा। चक्राणि चापविद्धानि मुद्गरांश्च बहून्रणे ॥८-१४-३४॥
Behold the mighty array of weapons: the hundred-slaying devices, varied and numerous iron clubs, discs, and many hammers, all pierced and ready for battle.
नानाविधानि शस्त्राणि प्रगृह्य जयगृद्धिनः। जीवन्त इव लक्ष्यन्ते गतसत्त्वास्तरस्विनः ॥८-१४-३५॥
The warriors, having taken various weapons and eager for victory, appear as if they are alive, though they are actually lifeless and energetic.
गदाविमथितैर्गात्रैर्मुसलैर्भिन्नमस्तकान्। गजवाजिरथक्षुण्णान्पश्य योधान्सहस्रशः ॥८-१४-३६॥
Behold the thousands of warriors whose bodies have been smashed by maces, heads broken by pestles, and who have been crushed under elephants, horses, and chariots.
मनुष्यगजवाजीनां शरशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः। निस्त्रिंशैः पट्टिशैः प्रासैर्नखरैर्लगुडैरपि ॥८-१४-३७॥
Humans, elephants, and horses were equipped with arrows, spears, javelins, lances, swords, axes, darts, claws, and clubs.
शरीरैर्बहुधा भिन्नैः शोणितौघपरिप्लुतैः। गतासुभिरमित्रघ्न संवृता रणभूमयः ॥८-१४-३८॥
The battlefields were a gruesome sight, O enemy-killer, covered with shattered bodies, awash with blood, and strewn with the dead.
बाहुभिश्चन्दनादिग्धैः साङ्गदैः शुभभूषणैः। सतलत्रैः सकेयूरैर्भाति भारत मेदिनी ॥८-१४-३९॥
The land of India shines with arms smeared with sandalwood and adorned with auspicious ornaments, bracelets, and armlets.
साङ्गुलित्रैर्भुजाग्रैश्च विप्रविद्धैरलङ्कृतैः। हस्तिहस्तोपमैश्छिन्नैरूरुभिश्च तरस्विनाम् ॥८-१४-४०॥
The scene was adorned with scattered fingers and forearms, severed like elephant trunks, and the thighs of the mighty warriors.
बद्धचूडामणिवरैः शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः। निकृत्तैर्वृषभाक्षाणां विराजति वसुन्धरा ॥८-१४-४१॥
The earth is adorned with the severed heads of bull-eyed warriors, which are decorated with exquisite crest-jewels and earrings, creating a striking scene.
कबन्धैः शोणितादिग्धैश्छिन्नगात्रशिरोधरैः। भूर्भाति भरतश्रेष्ठ शान्तार्चिर्भिरिवाग्निभिः ॥८-१४-४२॥
O best of the Bharatas, the earth appears as if covered with headless trunks smeared with blood, severed limbs, and heads, resembling fires with extinguished flames.
रथान्बहुविधान्भग्नान्हेमकिङ्किणिनः शुभान्। अश्वांश्च बहुधा पश्य शोणितेन परिप्लुतान् ॥८-१४-४३॥
Observe the diverse and beautiful chariots, adorned with golden bells, that lie broken, and the horses drenched in blood.
योधानां च महाशङ्खान्पाण्डुरांश्च प्रकीर्णकान्। निरस्तजिह्वान्मातङ्गाञ्शयानान्पर्वतोपमान् ॥८-१४-४४॥
The warriors and the great white conch shells lay scattered, while the tongueless elephants lay like mountains.
वैजयन्तीविचित्रांश्च हतांश्च गजयोधिनः। वारणानां परिस्तोमान्सुयुक्ताम्बरकम्बलान् ॥८-१४-४५॥
The scene was adorned with garlands and variegated decorations, and the fallen elephant warriors lay amidst heaps of elephants, draped in well-fitted cloth blankets.
विपाटिता विचित्राश्च रूपचित्राः कुथास्तथा। भिन्नाश्च बहुधा घण्टाः पतद्भिश्चूर्णिता गजैः ॥८-१४-४६॥
The beautifully painted and variegated canopies were torn apart, and the bells were broken in many ways, crushed by the falling elephants.
वैडूर्यमणिदण्डांश्च पतितानङ्कुशान्भुवि। बद्धाः सादिध्वजाग्रेषु सुवर्णविकृताः कशाः ॥८-१४-४७॥
The staffs made of cat's eye gems and the fallen goads lay on the ground, tied with golden whips on the tops of the flags.
विचित्रान्मणिचित्रांश्च जातरूपपरिष्कृतान्। अश्वास्तरपरिस्तोमान्राङ्कवान्पतितान्भुवि ॥८-१४-४८॥
The variegated and gem-adorned horses, decorated with gold and fully equipped with coverings, lay ornamented and fallen on the ground.
चूडामणीन्नरेन्द्राणां विचित्राः काञ्चनस्रजः। छत्राणि चापविद्धानि चामरव्यजनानि च ॥८-१४-४९॥
The crowns of kings, adorned with varied golden garlands, lay scattered along with umbrellas pierced by arrows and yak-tail fans.
चन्द्रनक्षत्रभासैश्च वदनैश्चारुकुण्डलैः। कॢप्तश्मश्रुभिरत्यर्थं वीराणां समलङ्कृतैः ॥ वदनैः पश्य सञ्छन्नां महीं शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥८-१४-५०॥
The faces of the heroes, shining like the moon and stars, adorned with beautiful earrings and well-arranged beards, are excessively decorated. Behold the earth, covered with faces, muddy with blood.
सजीवांश्च नरान्पश्य कूजमानान्समन्ततः। उपास्यमानान्बहुभिर्न्यस्तशस्त्रैर्विशां पते ॥८-१४-५१॥
"O lord of the people, behold the living beings and men chirping all around, being worshipped by many with their weapons laid down."
ज्ञातिभिः सहितैस्तत्र रोदमानैर्मुहुर्मुहुः। व्युत्क्रान्तानपरान्योधांश्छादयित्वा तरस्विनः ॥ पुनर्युद्धाय गच्छन्ति जयगृद्धाः प्रमन्यवः ॥८-१४-५२॥
Together with their relatives, crying repeatedly, the energetic warriors, having covered the bodies of their fallen comrades, go back to battle, eager for victory, filled with pride.
अपरे तत्र तत्रैव परिधावन्ति मानिनः। ज्ञातिभिः पतितैः शूरैर्याच्यमानास्तथोदकम् ॥८-१४-५३॥
Elsewhere, the proud ones run around, being begged for water by fallen heroes and relatives.
जलार्थं च गताः केचिन्निष्प्राणा बहवोऽर्जुन। संनिवृत्ताश्च ते शूरास्तान्दृष्ट्वैव विचेतसः ॥८-१४-५४॥
Arjuna, some went for water and many of them lost their lives. Those heroes returned, and seeing them, they became unconscious.
जलं दृष्ट्वा प्रधावन्ति क्रोशमानाः परस्परम्। जलं पीत्वा मृतान्पश्य पिबतोऽन्यांश्च भारत ॥८-१४-५५॥
"O Bhārata, upon seeing the water, they run towards each other shouting. After drinking the water, observe the dead and others who are drinking."
परित्यज्य प्रियानन्ये बान्धवान्बान्धवप्रिय। व्युत्क्रान्ताः समदृश्यन्त तत्र तत्र महारणे ॥८-१४-५६॥
In the great battle, having left behind their dear ones, others, and relatives, those dear to them appeared equally departed everywhere.
पश्यापरान्नरश्रेष्ठ संदष्टौष्ठपुटान्पुनः। भ्रुकुटीकुटिलैर्वक्त्रैः प्रेक्षमाणान्समन्ततः ॥८-१४-५७॥
Observe, O best of men, others biting their lips once more, with frowning and twisted faces, gazing all around.
एतत्तवैवानुरूपं कर्मार्जुन महाहवे। दिवि वा देवराजस्य त्वया यत्कृतमाहवे ॥८-१४-५८॥
This action is truly fitting for you, Arjuna, whether in the great battle on earth or in the heavenly realms, as it is an act performed by you for the king of gods.
एवं तां दर्शयन्कृष्णो युद्धभूमिं किरीटिने। गच्छन्नेवाशृणोच्छब्दं दुर्योधनबले महत् ॥८-१४-५९॥
Thus, as Krishna showed her the battlefield, Arjuna heard the great sound in Duryodhana's army while proceeding.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषान्भेरीपणवमिश्रितान्। रथाश्वगजनादांश्च शस्त्रशब्दांश्च दारुणान् ॥८-१४-६०॥
The battlefield resounded with the terrible sounds of conches, drums, kettle-drums, small drums, and the clamor of chariots, horses, elephants, and weapons.
प्रविश्य तद्बलं कृष्णस्तुरगैर्वातवेगिभिः। पाण्ड्येनाभ्यर्दितां सेनां त्वदीयां वीक्ष्य धिष्ठितः ॥८-१४-६१॥
Krishna entered that army with horses as swift as the wind and stood firm upon seeing your army being oppressed by Pandya.
स हि नानाविधैर्बाणैरिष्वासप्रवरो युधि। न्यहनद्द्विषतां व्रातान्गतासूनन्तको यथा ॥८-१४-६२॥
He, being the best of archers, used various kinds of arrows in battle to slay the groups of enemies, just as death would to those who are lifeless.
गजवाजिमनुष्याणां शरीराणि शितैः शरैः। भित्त्वा प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठो विदेहासूंश्चकार सः ॥८-१४-६३॥
He, the foremost among attackers, pierced the bodies of elephants, horses, and men with sharp arrows, rendering them lifeless.
शत्रुप्रवीरैरस्तानि नानाशस्त्राणि सायकैः। भित्त्वा तानहनत्पाण्ड्यः शत्रूञ्शक्र इवासुरान् ॥८-१४-६४॥
Pāṇḍya, with his weapons and arrows, pierced through the enemy heroes and killed them, just as Indra would slay the demons.
