Library: Duryodhana narrates the story of Tripura from the Markandeya Purana, where the gods appointed the superior Lord Brahma as charioteer of Lord Shiva, to convince Shalya of the task ahead. He also narrates the story of sage Jamadagni and how Karna, who has received a divine weapon from Jamadagni, can't be inferior.

(Then the god, the lord, the controller of the worlds, said to them: "There is indeed no immortality for all. Therefore, turn back, O demons. Choose another boon, as it pleases you.")

(Our god, grant this boon, grandfather. We, having established only these three ancient ones, shall move on this earth, favored by your grace in this world.)

ततो वर्षसहस्रे तु समेष्यामः परस्परम्। एकीभावं गमिष्यन्ति पुराण्येतानि चानघ ॥८-२४-११॥
tato varṣasahasre tu sameṣyāmaḥ parasparam। ekībhāvaṃ gamiṣyanti purāṇyetāni cānagha ॥8-24-11॥

(Then, indeed, in a thousand years, we will meet each other. These ancient texts, O sinless one, will attain unity.)

(These assembled ones, O Lord, who would slay, then, with one arrow, O best of gods, he will be our death. Thus, having replied to them, the god entered heaven.)

ते तु लब्धवराः प्रीताः सम्प्रधार्य परस्परम्। पुरत्रयविसृष्ट्यर्थं मयं वव्रुर्महासुरम् ॥ विश्वकर्माणमजरं दैत्यदानवपूजितम् ॥८-२४-१३॥

(Having heard that, the blessed god indeed said this to the gods: "The demons, wicked and enemies of the wise, constantly offend and torment you.")

(I am indeed equal to all beings; there is no doubt here. But the unrighteous are to be slain, thus I declare to you.)

(You all, choose the firm, lordly, victorious, effortless doer, the warrior, O Adityas; he will slay them, the non-gods.)

hantavyāḥ śatravaḥ sarve yuṣmākamiti me matiḥ। na tvekoham vadhe teṣāṃ samartho vai suradviṣām ॥8-24-57॥
[हन्तव्याः (hantavyāḥ) - to be killed; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अहम् (aham) - I; वधे (vadhe) - in killing; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; वै (vai) - indeed; सुरद्विषाम् (suradviṣām) - of the enemies of the gods;]
(All your enemies are to be killed, this is my opinion. But I alone am not capable of killing those enemies of the gods.)

(You all, together with my weapon's power, conquer those enemies in battle, for the group is indeed mighty.)

vadhyās te sarvataḥ pāpā ye yuṣmāsv aparādhinaḥ। mama tejobalārdhena sarvāṁs tān ghnata śātravān ॥8-24-60॥
[वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - to be killed; ते (te) - they; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - sinners; ये (ye) - who; युष्मासु (yuṣmāsu) - among you; अपराधिनः (aparādhinaḥ) - offenders; मम (mama) - my; तेजोबलार्धेन (tejobalārdhena) - with half of the power and strength; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - them; घ्नत (ghnata) - kill; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies;]
(They, the sinners who are offenders among you, are to be killed everywhere. Kill all those enemies with half of my power and strength.)

(Thus, that Tripura was burned, and the demons were completely destroyed by the angry Maheshvara, the well-wisher of the three worlds.)
In this way, the city of Tripura was destroyed, and the demons were annihilated entirely by the wrathful Maheshvara, who seeks the welfare of the three worlds.

(He, the fire born of self-anger, was restrained by saying 'Alas!' The three-eyed one said to him, 'Do not destroy the worlds to ashes.')

gaccha tvaṁ madanudhyānānnihaniṣyasi dānavān। vijitya ca ripūnsarvānguṇānprāpsyasi puṣkalān ॥8-24-148॥

अवधीद्देवशत्रूंस्तान्मददर्पबलान्वितान्। वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शैः प्रहारैरेव भार्गवः ॥८-२४-१५०॥
avadhīd devaśatrūṁs tān madadarpa-balānvitān। vajrāśanisamasparśaiḥ prahārair eva bhārgavaḥ ॥8-24-150॥

bhārgavo'pyadadātsarvaṃ dhanurvedaṃ mahātmane। karṇāya puruṣavyāghra suprītenāntarātmanā ॥8-24-157॥
