Pancharatra and Core: Shlya's pact with Karna to bear his harsh advice, whether palatable or not, and also makes a statement: The conduct of self-criticism, self-praise, criticism of others, and praise of others is considered fourfold and is not practiced by the noble ones.

[एवम् (evam) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; देवः (devaḥ) - god; सर्वलोक (sarvaloka) - all worlds; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; सारथ्यम् (sārathyam) - charioteering; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; रथी (rathī) - charioteer;]
(Thus, he, the blessed god, the grandfather of all worlds, did charioteering there where Rudra became the charioteer.)

(A hero superior to a charioteer should be made a charioteer. Therefore, you, tiger among men, control the horses in battle.)

(Then Śalya, embracing your son, spoke words. The king of Madra, pleased, addressed Duryodhana, the foe-slayer, then.)

एवं चेन्मन्यसे राजन्गान्धारे प्रियदर्शन। तस्मात्ते यत्प्रियं किञ्चित्तत्सर्वं करवाण्यहम् ॥८-२५-४॥
evaṃ cen manyase rājan gāndhāre priyadarśana। tasmāt te yat priyaṃ kiñcit tat sarvaṃ karavāṇy aham ॥8-25-4॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; चेत् (cet) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - O Gandhari; प्रियदर्शन (priyadarśana) - of pleasing appearance; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - to you; यत् (yat) - whatever; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - I shall do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Thus, if you think, O king, O Gandhari of pleasing appearance, therefore, whatever is dear to you, anything, that all I shall do.)
Thus, if you think so, O King, O Gandhari of pleasing appearance, then I shall do everything that is dear to you.
यत्रास्मि भरतश्रेष्ठ योग्यः कर्मणि कर्हिचित्। तत्र सर्वात्मना युक्तो वक्ष्ये कार्यधुरं तव ॥८-२५-५॥
yatrāsmi bharataśreṣṭha yogyaḥ karmaṇi karhicit। tatra sarvātmanā yukto vakṣye kāryadhuraṃ tava ॥8-25-5॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; योग्यः (yogyaḥ) - qualified; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in work; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with full effort; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; वक्ष्ये (vakṣye) - I shall perform; कार्यधुरं (kāryadhuram) - the duty; तव (tava) - your;]
(Wherever, O best of the Bharatas, I am qualified in work at any time, there, with full effort, I shall perform your duty.)
O best of the Bharatas, whenever I am qualified to perform a task, I shall engage myself fully and carry out your duty.
यत्तु कर्णमहं ब्रूयां हितकामः प्रियाप्रियम्। मम तत्क्षमतां सर्वं भवान्कर्णश्च सर्वशः ॥८-२५-६॥
yattu karṇamahaṃ brūyāṃ hitakāmaḥ priyāpriyam। mama tatkṣamatāṃ sarvaṃ bhavānkarṇaśca sarvaśaḥ ॥8-25-6॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तु (tu) - but; कर्णम् (karṇam) - to Karna; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - would speak; हितकामः (hitakāmaḥ) - desiring welfare; प्रिय (priya) - pleasant; अप्रिय (apriya) - unpleasant; मम (mama) - my; तत् (tat) - that; क्षमताम् (kṣamatām) - may forgive; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; भवान् (bhavān) - you; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely;]
(But that which I would speak to Karna, desiring welfare, whether pleasant or unpleasant, may you and Karna completely forgive all that is mine.)
"O Karna, whatever I say, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, is for your welfare. May you and Karna forgive all my words completely."

ईशानस्य यथा ब्रह्मा यथा पार्थस्य केशवः। तथा नित्यं हिते युक्तो मद्रराज भजस्व नः ॥८-२५-७॥
īśānasya yathā brahmā yathā pārthasya keśavaḥ। tathā nityaṃ hite yukto madrarāja bhajasva naḥ ॥8-25-7॥
[ईशानस्य (īśānasya) - of the lord; यथा (yathā) - as; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahma; यथा (yathā) - as; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Krishna; तथा (tathā) - so; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; हिते (hite) - in welfare; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; मद्रराज (madrarāja) - O King of Madra; भजस्व (bhajasva) - serve; नः (naḥ) - us;]
(As Brahma is to the Lord, as Krishna is to Partha, so always engaged in welfare, O King of Madra, serve us.)
Just as Brahma is devoted to the Lord and Krishna to Partha, you too, O King of Madra, should always be engaged in our welfare.
शल्य उवाच॥

[शल्य (śalya) - Śalya; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

आत्मनिन्दात्मपूजा च परनिन्दा परस्तवः। अनाचरितमार्याणां वृत्तमेतच्चतुर्विधम् ॥८-२५-८॥
ātmanindātmapūjā ca paranindā parastavaḥ। anācāritamāryāṇāṃ vṛttametaccaturvidham ॥8-25-8॥
[आत्मनिन्दा (ātmanindā) - self-criticism; आत्मपूजा (ātmapūjā) - self-praise; च (ca) - and; परनिन्दा (paranindā) - criticism of others; परस्तवः (parastavaḥ) - praise of others; अनाचरितम् (anācāritam) - not practiced; आर्याणाम् (āryāṇām) - by the noble ones; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; एतत् (etat) - this; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - fourfold;]

यत्तु विद्वन्प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रत्ययार्थमहं तव। आत्मनः स्तवसंयुक्तं तन्निबोध यथातथम् ॥८-२५-९॥
yattu vidvanpravakṣyāmi pratyayārthamahaṃ tava। ātmanaḥ stavasaṃyuktaṃ tannibodha yathātatham ॥8-25-9॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तु (tu) - but; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O wise one; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall explain; प्रत्ययार्थम् (pratyayārtham) - the meaning of conviction; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - to you; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; स्तव (stava) - praise; संयुक्तम् (saṃyuktam) - combined; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - as it is;]
(But that which I shall explain to you, O wise one, is the meaning of conviction combined with the praise of the self; understand that as it is.)
"O wise one, I shall explain to you the true meaning of conviction, which is intertwined with self-praise; understand it in its entirety."
अहं शक्रस्य सारथ्ये योग्यो मातलिवत्प्रभो। अप्रमादप्रयोगाच्च ज्ञानविद्याचिकित्सितैः ॥८-२५-१०॥
ahaṁ śakrasya sārathye yogyo mātalivatprabho। apramādaprayogācca jñānavidyācikitsitaiḥ ॥8-25-10॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; सारथ्ये (sārathye) - in charioteering; योग्यः (yogyaḥ) - suitable; मातलिवत् (mātalivat) - like Mātali; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अप्रमादप्रयोगात् (apramādaprayogāt) - due to careful execution; च (ca) - and; ज्ञान (jñāna) - knowledge; विद्या (vidyā) - science; चिकित्सितैः (cikitsitaiḥ) - by treatments;]
(I am suitable for charioteering of Śakra like Mātali, O lord, due to careful execution and by knowledge, science, and treatments.)
O lord, I am as suitable as Mātali for the charioteering of Śakra, due to my careful execution and knowledge in science and treatments.
ततः पार्थेन सङ्ग्रामे युध्यमानस्य तेऽनघ। वाहयिष्यामि तुरगान्विज्वरो भव सूतज ॥८-२५-११॥
tataḥ pārthena saṅgrāme yudhyamānasya te'nagha। vāhayiṣyāmi turagānvijvaro bhava sūtaja ॥8-25-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Arjuna; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; युध्यमानस्य (yudhyamānasya) - fighting; ते (te) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; वाहयिष्यामि (vāhayiṣyāmi) - I will drive; तुरगान् (turagān) - horses; विज्वरः (vijvaraḥ) - without fever; भव (bhava) - be; सूतज (sūtaja) - O son of the charioteer;]
(Then, by Arjuna, in battle, fighting, your, O sinless one, I will drive the horses. Be without fever, O son of the charioteer.)
Then, O sinless one, while you are fighting in the battle led by Arjuna, I will drive the horses. Be calm and composed, O son of the charioteer.
