Core and Pancharatra: Arjuna continues to fight Suśarman and Saṃśaptakas. The Trigartas surrounded Arjuna, resolved either to die or to achieve victory.

vartamāne tadā yuddhe kṣatriyāṇāṃ nimajjane। gāṇḍīvasya mahānghoṣaḥ śuśruve yudhi māriṣa ॥8-37-1॥

(In the present, then, in the battle, of the warriors' immersion, the great sound of the Gandiva bow was heard, O noble one.)

संशप्तकानां कदनमकरोद्यत्र पाण्डवः। कोसलानां तथा राजन्नारायणबलस्य च ॥८-३७-२॥

O king, the Pāṇḍava carried out the slaughter of the Saṃśaptakas, as well as the Kosalas and the Nārāyaṇa army.
संशप्तकास्तु समरे शरवृष्टिं समन्ततः। अपातयन्पार्थमूर्ध्नि जयगृद्धाः प्रमन्यवः ॥८-३७-३॥
saṃśaptakāstu samare śaravṛṣṭiṃ samantataḥ। apātayanpārthamūrdhni jayagṛddhāḥ pramanyavaḥ ॥8-37-3॥
[संशप्तकाः (saṃśaptakāḥ) - the Trigartas; तु (tu) - but; समरे (samare) - in the battle; शरवृष्टिं (śaravṛṣṭiṃ) - a shower of arrows; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides; अपातयन् (apātayan) - discharged; पार्थमूर्ध्नि (pārthamūrdhni) - at the head of Arjuna; जयगृद्धाः (jayagṛddhāḥ) - desirous of victory; प्रमन्यवः (pramanyavaḥ) - the brave.;]
(The Trigartas, but in the battle, discharged a shower of arrows from all sides at the head of Arjuna, desirous of victory, the brave.)
The Trigartas, eager for victory and full of courage, launched a barrage of arrows from all directions at Arjuna's head during the battle.
तां वृष्टिं सहसा राजंस्तरसा धारयन्प्रभुः। व्यगाहत रणे पार्थो विनिघ्नन्रथिनां वरः ॥८-३७-४॥
tāṃ vṛṣṭiṃ sahasā rājaṃstarasā dhārayanprabhuḥ। vyagāhata raṇe pārtho vinighnanrathināṃ varaḥ ॥8-37-4॥

(Suddenly, O king, the lord held that rain with force. Arjuna, the best of charioteers, entered the battle slaying.)

निगृह्य तु रथानीकं कङ्कपत्रैः शिलाशितैः। आससाद रणे पार्थः सुशर्माणं महारथम् ॥८-३७-५॥
nigṛhya tu rathānīkaṃ kaṅkapatraiḥ śilāśitaiḥ। āsasāda raṇe pārthaḥ suśarmāṇaṃ mahāratham ॥8-37-5॥
[निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having restrained; तु (tu) - but; रथानीकं (rathānīkaṃ) - the chariot army; कङ्कपत्रैः (kaṅkapatraiḥ) - with arrow-feathers; शिलाशितैः (śilāśitaiḥ) - sharpened with stones; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; सुशर्माणं (suśarmāṇam) - Suśarman; महारथम् (mahāratham) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(Having restrained the chariot army with arrow-feathers sharpened with stones, Arjuna approached Suśarman, the great chariot-warrior, in battle.)

स तस्य शरवर्षाणि ववर्ष रथिनां वरः। तथा संशप्तकाश्चैव पार्थस्य समरे स्थिताः ॥८-३७-६॥

(He, the best of charioteers, rained his arrow showers. Thus, the Saṃśaptakas also stood in battle against Arjuna.)
He, the best among charioteers, unleashed a shower of arrows. Likewise, the Saṃśaptakas stood firm in battle against Arjuna.
सुशर्मा तु ततः पार्थं विद्ध्वा नवभिराशुगैः। जनार्दनं त्रिभिर्बाणैरभ्यहन्दक्षिणे भुजे ॥ ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन केतुं विव्याध मारिष ॥८-३७-७॥

(Suśarmā, then, having pierced Arjuna with nine swift arrows, struck Kṛṣṇa on the right arm with three arrows. Then, with another broad-headed arrow, he pierced the flag, O lord.)

(He, the best of monkeys, O king, created by Vishvakarma, great, roared a very loud sound, frightening indeed, and roared.)
He, the best of monkeys, created by Vishvakarma, let out a great roar that was truly frightening, O king.
कपेस्तु निनदं श्रुत्वा सन्त्रस्ता तव वाहिनी। भयं विपुलमादाय निश्चेष्टा समपद्यत ॥८-३७-९॥
kapestu ninadaṁ śrutvā santrastā tava vāhinī। bhayaṁ vipulamādāya niśceṣṭā samapadyata ॥8-37-9॥
[कपेः (kapeḥ) - of the monkey; तु (tu) - but; निनदम् (ninadam) - sound; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सन्त्रस्ता (santrastā) - terrified; तव (tava) - your; वाहिनी (vāhinī) - army; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; निश्चेष्टा (niśceṣṭā) - motionless; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became;]
(But having heard the sound of the monkey, your army, terrified, became motionless, having taken great fear.)
Upon hearing the monkey's sound, your army was struck with terror and became completely motionless, overwhelmed by great fear.
ततः सा शुशुभे सेना निश्चेष्टावस्थिता नृप। नानापुष्पसमाकीर्णं यथा चैत्ररथं वनम् ॥८-३७-१०॥
tataḥ sā śuśubhe senā niśceṣṭāvasthitā nṛpa। nānāpuṣpasamākīrṇaṃ yathā caitrarathaṃ vanam ॥8-37-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; सेना (senā) - army; निश्चेष्टावस्थिता (niśceṣṭāvasthitā) - motionless; नृप (nṛpa) - king; नानापुष्पसमाकीर्णं (nānāpuṣpasamākīrṇaṃ) - filled with various flowers; यथा (yathā) - like; चैत्ररथं (caitrarathaṃ) - Caitraratha; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Then, O king, the army stood motionless, shining like the forest of Caitraratha filled with various flowers.)

प्रतिलभ्य ततः सञ्ज्ञां योधास्ते कुरुसत्तम। अर्जुनं सिषिचुर्बाणैः पर्वतं जलदा इव ॥ परिवव्रुस्तदा सर्वे पाण्डवस्य महारथम् ॥८-३७-११॥
pratilabhya tataḥ sañjñāṃ yodhāste kurusattama। arjunaṃ siṣicur bāṇaiḥ parvataṃ jaladā iva ॥ parivavr̥s tadā sarve pāṇḍavasya mahāratham ॥8-37-11॥
[प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - consciousness; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; ते (te) - they; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; सिषिचुः (siṣicuḥ) - showered; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; जलदाः (jaladāḥ) - clouds; इव (iva) - like; परिवव्रुः (parivavruḥ) - surrounded; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pandava; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot;]
(Having regained consciousness, then the warriors, O best of the Kurus, showered Arjuna with arrows like clouds showering a mountain. Then all surrounded the great chariot of the Pandava.)
After regaining their senses, the warriors, O best of the Kurus, attacked Arjuna with arrows as clouds shower a mountain. Then, all of them surrounded the great chariot of the Pandava.
ते हयान्रथचक्रे च रथेषाश्चापि भारत। निगृह्य बलवत्तूर्णं सिंहनादमथानदन् ॥८-३७-१२॥
te hayānrathacakre ca ratheṣāścāpi bhārata। nigṛhya balavattūrṇaṃ siṃhanādamathānadan ॥8-37-12॥

(They, holding the horses, chariot wheels, and charioteers strongly and quickly, then roared like a lion, O Bharata.)
O Bharata, they held the horses, chariot wheels, and charioteers with great strength and speed, and then roared like a lion.
अपरे जगृहुश्चैव केशवस्य महाभुजौ। पार्थमन्ये महाराज रथस्थं जगृहुर्मुदा ॥८-३७-१३॥
apare jagṛhuścaiva keśavasya mahābhujau। pārthamanye mahārāja rathasthaṃ jagṛhurmudā ॥8-37-13॥
[अपरे (apare) - others; जगृहुश्च (jagṛhuśca) - seized and; एव (eva) - indeed; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; महाभुजौ (mahābhujau) - the mighty arms; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha; अन्ये (anye) - others; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; रथस्थं (rathastham) - standing on the chariot; जगृहुर्मुदा (jagṛhurmudā) - seized with joy;]
(Others indeed seized the mighty arms of Keśava. Others, O great king, seized Pārtha standing on the chariot with joy.)
Some others held the mighty arms of Keśava, while others, O great king, joyfully held Pārtha standing on the chariot.
केशवस्तु तदा बाहू विधुन्वन्रणमूर्धनि। पातयामास तान्सर्वान्दुष्टहस्तीव हस्तिनः ॥८-३७-१४॥
keśavastu tadā bāhū vidhunvanraṇamūrdhani। pātayāmāsa tānsarvānduṣṭahastīva hastinaḥ ॥8-37-14॥
[केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keshava; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; विधुन्वन् (vidhunvan) - shaking; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - in the battlefield; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - caused to fall; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दुष्टहस्ती (duṣṭahastī) - like an evil elephant; इव (iva) - like; हस्तिनः (hastinaḥ) - elephants;]
(Keshava, then, shaking his arms in the battlefield, caused all of them to fall like an evil elephant does to elephants.)
Keshava, at that time, shook his arms in the battlefield and made all of them fall, just like a wicked elephant would do to other elephants.
ततः क्रुद्धो रणे पार्थः संवृतस्तैर्महारथैः। निगृहीतं रथं दृष्ट्वा केशवं चाप्यभिद्रुतम् ॥ रथारूढांश्च सुबहून्पदातींश्चाप्यपातयत् ॥८-३७-१५॥
tataḥ kruddho raṇe pārthaḥ saṁvṛtastairmahārathaiḥ। nigṛhītaṁ rathaṁ dṛṣṭvā keśavaṁ cāpyabhidrutam ॥ rathārūḍhāṁśca subahūnpadātīṁścāpyapātayat ॥8-37-15॥

(Then, angry in battle, Arjuna, surrounded by those great charioteers, seeing the seized chariot and Krishna also attacked, caused many mounted on chariots and foot soldiers to fall.)
Then, in the battle, an enraged Arjuna, surrounded by great charioteers, saw his chariot seized and Krishna being attacked. In response, he caused many charioteers and foot soldiers to fall.
आसन्नांश्च ततो योधाञ्शरैरासन्नयोधिभिः। च्यावयामास समरे केशवं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥८-३७-१६॥

(See, O mighty-armed Krishna, the group of warriors sworn to fight to the death, performing terrible deeds, being slain by me by the thousands.)

रथबन्धमिमं घोरं पृथिव्यां नास्ति कश्चन। यः सहेत पुमाँल्लोके मदन्यो यदुपुङ्गव ॥८-३७-१८॥
rathabandham imaṁ ghoraṁ pṛthivyāṁ nāsti kaścana। yaḥ saheta pumāṁl loke mad anyo yadupuṅgava ॥8-37-18॥
[रथबन्धम् (rathabandham) - chariot-binding; इमम् (imam) - this; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; यः (yaḥ) - who; सहेत (saheta) - can withstand; पुमान् (pumān) - man; लोके (loke) - in the world; मत् (mat) - than me; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; यदुपुङ्गव (yadupuṅgava) - O chief of Yadus;]
(There is no one on earth who can withstand this terrible chariot-binding other than me, O chief of Yadus.)
O chief of Yadus, there is no one else in the world who can endure this formidable chariot-binding other than myself.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा बीभत्सुर्देवदत्तमथाधमत्। पाञ्चजन्यं च कृष्णोऽपि पूरयन्निव रोदसी ॥८-३७-१९॥
ityevamuktvā bībhatsurdevadattamathādhamat। pāñcajanyaṃ ca kṛṣṇo'pi pūrayanniva rodasī ॥8-37-19॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bibhatsu (Arjuna); देवदत्तम् (devadattam) - Devadatta (name of a conch); अथ (atha) - then; अधमत् (adhamat) - blew; पाञ्चजन्यम् (pāñcajanyam) - Panchajanya (name of a conch); च (ca) - and; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; अपि (api) - also; पूरयन् (pūrayann) - filling; इव (iva) - as if; रोदसी (rodasī) - the heavens and the earth;]
(Thus having spoken, Bibhatsu blew the Devadatta. Krishna also blew the Panchajanya, as if filling the heavens and the earth.)
Thus, having spoken in this way, Arjuna (Bibhatsu) blew his conch named Devadatta. Krishna, on the other hand, blew his conch named Panchajanya, as if filling the entire universe.
तं तु शङ्खस्वनं श्रुत्वा संशप्तकवरूथिनी। सञ्चचाल महाराज वित्रस्ता चाभवद्भृशम् ॥८-३७-२०॥
taṁ tu śaṅkhasvanaṁ śrutvā saṁśaptakavarūthinī। sañcacāla mahārāja vitrastā cābhavadbhṛśam ॥8-37-20॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; तु (tu) - but; शङ्खस्वनं (śaṅkhasvanaṁ) - conch sound; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; संशप्तकवरूथिनी (saṁśaptakavarūthinī) - the army of the Saṁśaptakas; सञ्चचाल (sañcacāla) - trembled; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वित्रस्ता (vitrastā) - frightened; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(But having heard that conch sound, the army of the Saṁśaptakas trembled, O great king, and became greatly frightened.)
Upon hearing the sound of the conch, the army of the Saṁśaptakas trembled and became very frightened, O great king.
पदबन्धं ततश्चक्रे पाण्डवः परवीरहा। नागमस्त्रं महाराज सम्प्रोदीर्य मुहुर्मुहुः ॥८-३७-२१॥
padabandhaṃ tataścakre pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā। nāgam astraṃ mahārāja samprodīrya muhur muhuḥ ॥8-37-21॥
