Pancharatra and Core: General destruction of the army by Arjua, Bhima and Karna; Nakula and Sahadeva fighting Duryodhana face defeat, but are ably supported by Dhṛṣṭadyumna in time, who makes the Kuru king retreat; Karna takes on Dhṛṣṭadyumna as day reaches its midpoint causing great destruction of Panchala forces; Seeing the destruction caused by Karna, Arjuna asks Krishna to take him there; Ashvatthama stops Arjuna and overpowers him, resulting in Krishna's rebuke. What follows is the complete slaughter of the Kaurava forces by Arjuna.

ते क्षत्रिया दह्यमानास्त्रिभिस्तैः पावकोपमैः। जग्मुर्विनाशं समरे राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥८-४०-६॥
te kṣatriyā dahyamānāstribhistaiḥ pāvakopamaiḥ। jagmurvināśaṃ samare rājandurmantrite tava ॥8-40-6॥

ततो दुर्योधनः क्रुद्धो नकुलं नवभिः शरैः। विव्याध भरतश्रेष्ठ चतुरश्चास्य वाजिनः ॥८-४०-७॥

(The bow-circle indeed of his is seen in battle, O Bhārata. The arrows and indeed are seen moving all around.)
In the battle, O Bhārata, his bow's circle is clearly visible, and the arrows are seen flying all around.
तस्य सायकसञ्छन्नौ चकाशेतां च पाण्डवौ। मेघच्छन्नौ यथा व्योम्नि चन्द्रसूर्यौ हतप्रभौ ॥८-४०-१६॥
tasya sāyakasañchannau cakāśetāṃ ca pāṇḍavau। meghacchannau yathā vyomni candrasūryau hataprabhau ॥8-40-16॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; सायक (sāyaka) - arrows; सञ्छन्नौ (sañchannau) - covered; चकाशेतां (cakāśetāṃ) - shone; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवौ (pāṇḍavau) - the Pandavas; मेघ (megha) - cloud; छन्नौ (channau) - covered; यथा (yathā) - as; व्योम्नि (vyomni) - in the sky; चन्द्र (candra) - moon; सूर्यौ (sūryau) - sun; हत (hata) - stricken; प्रभौ (prabhau) - radiance;]
(Covered by his arrows, the Pandavas shone, as the moon and sun, covered by clouds in the sky, with their radiance stricken.)
The Pandavas, covered by his arrows, appeared like the moon and sun in the sky, obscured by clouds, their brilliance dimmed.
ते तु बाणा महाराज हेमपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः। आच्छादयन्दिशः सर्वाः सूर्यस्येवांशवस्तदा ॥८-४०-१७॥
te tu bāṇā mahārāja hemapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ। ācchādayandiśaḥ sarvāḥ sūryasyevāṃśavastadā ॥8-40-17॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; हेमपुङ्खाः (hemapuṅkhāḥ) - golden-feathered; शिलाशिताः (śilāśitāḥ) - stone-sharpened; आच्छादयन् (ācchādayan) - covering; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; इव (iva) - like; अंशवः (aṃśavaḥ) - rays; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(But those arrows, O great king, golden-feathered and stone-sharpened, were covering all the directions like the rays of the sun then.)
At that time, O great king, those arrows with golden feathers and sharpened with stones covered all directions, resembling the rays of the sun.
बाणभूते ततस्तस्मिन्सञ्छन्ने च नभस्तले। यमाभ्यां ददृशे रूपं कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥८-४०-१८॥
bāṇabhūte tatastasminsañchannē ca nabhastalē। yamābhyāṁ dadṛśē rūpaṁ kālāntakayamōpamam ॥8-40-18॥
[बाणभूते (bāṇabhūte) - in the form of an arrow; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; सञ्छन्ने (sañchannē) - covered; च (ca) - and; नभस्तले (nabhastalē) - in the sky; यमाभ्यां (yamābhyāṁ) - by Yama; ददृशे (dadṛśē) - was seen; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; कालान्तकयमोपमम् (kālāntakayamōpamam) - like the end-time Yama;]
(Then, in the form of an arrow, in that covered sky, the form was seen by Yama, like the end-time Yama.)
Then, in the sky covered by arrows, Yama saw a form resembling the end-time Yama.
पराक्रमं तु तं दृष्ट्वा तव सूनोर्महारथाः। मृत्योरुपान्तिकं प्राप्तौ माद्रीपुत्रौ स्म मेनिरे ॥८-४०-१९॥
parākramaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā tava sūnormahārathāḥ। mṛtyorupāntikaṃ prāptau mādrīputrau sma menire ॥8-40-19॥

(But having seen that valor of your son, the great warriors thought that the sons of Mādrī had indeed reached the proximity of death.)
The great warriors, upon witnessing the valor of your son, believed that the sons of Mādrī were indeed on the brink of death.
ततः सेनापती राजन्पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः। पार्षतः प्रययौ तत्र यत्र राजा सुयोधनः ॥८-४०-२०॥

(Then the commander, O king, of the Pandavas, the great soul, son of Prishata, went there where King Suyodhana was.)

(Then the sons of Madri, the heroes and great charioteers, having surpassed, Dhrishtadyumna struck your son with arrows.)

O Arjuna, do you still hold your Gandiva bow in your hand while standing on the chariot? Are your arms well and does your strength remain the same?

जत्रुदेशे च सुभृशं वत्सदन्तैरताडयत्। स मूर्च्छां परमां गत्वा ध्वजयष्टिं समाश्रितः ॥८-४०-१२६॥
