Core and Pancharatra: The Kauravas make a strategy to attack the Pandavas together, and not to face them one-on-one. The Kaurava formation has Shalya leading, Kritavarma protecting the left, Kripa protecting the right, Ashwatthama at the rear, and Duryodhana at the centre. Eleven thousand chariots on the Kaurava side, and six thousand chariots on the Pandavas side remained.

[व्यतीतायाम् (vyatītāyām) - when passed; रजन्याम् (rajanyām) - the night; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तावकान् (tāvakān) - your; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; संनह्यन्ताम् (saṃnahyantām) - be prepared; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors;]
(When the night had passed, King Duryodhana then said, "Let all your great warriors be prepared.")
As the night ended, King Duryodhana instructed all his great warriors to get ready for battle.
राज्ञस्तु मतमाज्ञाय समनह्यत सा चमूः। अयोजयन्रथांस्तूर्णं पर्यधावंस्तथापरे ॥९-७-२॥
rājñastu matamājñāya samnahyata sā camūḥ। ayojayanrathāṃstūrṇaṃ paryadhāvaṃstathāpare ॥9-7-2॥
[राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having known; समनह्यत (samnahyata) - was prepared; सा (sā) - that; चमूः (camūḥ) - army; अयोजयन् (ayojayan) - they yoked; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; पर्यधावन् (paryadhāvan) - ran around; तथा (tathā) - thus; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(Having known the king's opinion, that army was prepared. They quickly yoked the chariots, and others ran around thus.)
Upon understanding the king's decision, the army got ready. They swiftly harnessed the chariots, while others moved around accordingly.
अकल्प्यन्त च मातङ्गाः समनह्यन्त पत्तयः। हयानास्तरणोपेतांश्चक्रुरन्ये सहस्रशः ॥९-७-३॥
akalpyanta ca mātaṅgāḥ samanahyanta pattayaḥ। hayānāstaraṇopetāṃścakruranye sahasraśaḥ ॥9-7-3॥

(Elephants were prepared and chariots were yoked. Horses equipped with coverings were made by others in thousands.)

ततो बलानि सर्वाणि सेनाशिष्टानि भारत। संनद्धान्येव ददृशुर्मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ॥९-७-५॥
tato balāni sarvāṇi senāśiṣṭāni bhārata। saṃnaddhānyeva dadṛśurmṛtyuṃ kṛtvā nivartanam ॥9-7-5॥

(Then all the forces, the remaining of the army, O Bharata, indeed fully equipped, saw death, having made a retreat.)

(Having made Shalya the commander, the great warriors, dividing all the army into divisions, were arranged.)
The great warriors appointed Shalya as the commander and organized the entire army into divisions.
ततः सर्वे समागम्य पुत्रेण तव सैनिकाः। कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिः शल्योऽथ सौबलः ॥९-७-७॥

अन्ये च पार्थिवाः शेषाः समयं चक्रिरे तदा। न न एकेन योद्धव्यं कथञ्चिदपि पाण्डवैः ॥९-७-८॥
anye ca pārthivāḥ śeṣāḥ samayaṃ cakrire tadā। na na ekena yoddhavyaṃ kathaṃcidapi pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥9-7-8॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - remaining; समयं (samayaṃ) - agreement; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - made; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; न (na) - not; एकेन (ekena) - by one; योद्धव्यं (yoddhavyaṃ) - to be fought; कथञ्चिदपि (kathaṃcidapi) - in any way; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas;]
(Others and the remaining kings then made an agreement: not to be fought by one in any way by the Pandavas.)

यो ह्येकः पाण्डवैर्युध्येद्यो वा युध्यन्तमुत्सृजेत्। स पञ्चभिर्भवेद्युक्तः पातकैः सोपपातकैः ॥ अन्योन्यं परिरक्षद्भिर्योद्धव्यं सहितैश्च नः ॥९-७-९॥
yo hyekaḥ pāṇḍavairyudhyedyo vā yudhyantamutsṛjet। sa pañcabhirbhavedyuktaḥ pātakaiḥ sopapātakaiḥ ॥ anyonyaṃ parirakṣadbhiryoddhavyaṃ sahitaiśca naḥ ॥9-7-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas; युध्येत् (yudhyet) - would fight; यः (yaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; युध्यन्तम् (yudhyantam) - fighting; उत्सृजेत् (utsṛjet) - would abandon; सः (saḥ) - he; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - with five; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; पातकैः (pātakaiḥ) - with sins; सः (saḥ) - he; उपपातकैः (upapātakaiḥ) - with minor sins; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; परिरक्षद्भिः (parirakṣadbhiḥ) - by protecting; योद्धव्यम् (yoddhavyam) - must fight; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - together; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - we;]
(Who indeed would fight alone with the Pandavas or would abandon the one fighting, he would be endowed with five sins and minor sins. We must fight together by protecting each other.)
The one who fights alone against the Pandavas or abandons a fighting ally would incur five major and minor sins. We must fight together, protecting each other.
एवं ते समयं कृत्वा सर्वे तत्र महारथाः। मद्रराजं पुरस्कृत्य तूर्णमभ्यद्रवन्परान् ॥९-७-१०॥

(Thus, having made an agreement, all the great warriors there, placing the Madra king in front, swiftly attacked the enemies.)

तथैव पाण्डवा राजन्व्यूह्य सैन्यं महारणे। अभ्ययुः कौरवान्सर्वान्योत्स्यमानाः समन्ततः ॥९-७-११॥
tathaiva pāṇḍavā rājanvyūhya sainyaṃ mahāraṇe। abhyayuḥ kauravānsarvānyotsyamānāḥ samantataḥ ॥9-7-11॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्यूह्य (vyūhya) - having arranged; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; महारणे (mahāraṇe) - in the great battle; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - advanced; कौरवान् (kauravān) - towards the Kauravas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; योत्स्यमानाः (yotsyamānāḥ) - ready to fight; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides;]
(In the same way, O king, the Pandavas, having arranged their army in the great battle, advanced towards all the Kauravas, ready to fight from all sides.)

तद्बलं भरतश्रेष्ठ क्षुब्धार्णवसमस्वनम्। समुद्धूतार्णवाकारमुद्धूतरथकुञ्जरम् ॥९-७-१२॥
tad-balaṁ bharata-śreṣṭha kṣubdhārṇava-samasvanam। samuddhūtārṇavākāramuddhūta-ratha-kuñjaram ॥9-7-12॥
[तत् (tat) - that; बलम् (balam) - army; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharata-śreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; क्षुब्ध (kṣubdha) - agitated; अर्णव (arṇava) - ocean; सम (sama) - equal; स्वनम् (svanam) - sound; समुद्धूत (samuddhūta) - raised; अर्णव (arṇava) - ocean; आकारम् (ākāram) - form; उद्धूत (uddhūta) - raised; रथ (ratha) - chariots; कुञ्जरम् (kuñjaram) - elephants;]
(That army, O best of the Bharatas, had a sound equal to the agitated ocean, appearing like a raised ocean, with raised chariots and elephants.)

आशा बलवती राजन्पुत्राणां तेऽभवत्तदा। हते भीष्मे च द्रोणे च सूतपुत्रे च पातिते ॥ शल्यः पार्थान्रणे सर्वान्निहनिष्यति मारिष ॥९-७-१६॥

(Hope became strong for your sons, O king, then. With Bhishma, Drona, and Karna slain and fallen, Shalya will destroy all the sons of Pandu in battle, O lord.)

तामाशां हृदये कृत्वा समाश्वास्य च भारत। मद्रराजं च समरे समाश्रित्य महारथम् ॥ नाथवन्तमथात्मानममन्यत सुतस्तव ॥९-७-१७॥

(Having placed that hope in the heart and having consoled, O Bharata, and having relied upon the Madra king, the great chariot warrior in battle, then your son thought himself to be having a protector.)

यदा कर्णे हते पार्थाः सिंहनादं प्रचक्रिरे। तदा राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रानाविवेश महद्भयम् ॥९-७-१८॥

(When Karna was slain, the sons of Pritha made a lion's roar. Then, O king, great fear entered the Dhartarashtras.)

तान्समाश्वास्य तु तदा मद्रराजः प्रतापवान्। व्यूह्य व्यूहं महाराज सर्वतोभद्रमृद्धिमत् ॥९-७-१९॥

(Thus, these tiger-like men, desiring mutual destruction with a multitude of strength, approached towards the early twilight, O lord.)
Thus, O lord, these mighty warriors, eager to destroy each other, approached the early twilight like tigers.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं घोररूपं भयानकम्। तावकानां परेषां च निघ्नतामितरेतरम् ॥९-७-४४॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ ghorarūpaṃ bhayānakam। tāvakānāṃ pareṣāṃ ca nighnatāmitaretaram ॥9-7-44॥
