(Having heard these words of the king, the mighty king of Madra then said these words to Duryodhana, O king, indeed.)

दुर्योधन महाबाहो शृणु वाक्यविदां वर। यावेतौ मन्यसे कृष्णौ रथस्थौ रथिनां वरौ ॥ न मे तुल्यावुभावेतौ बाहुवीर्ये कथञ्चन ॥९-६-२॥

(I would fight the entire raised earth with gods, demons, and humans in the battlefield, being angry, why not the Pandavas? I will conquer the sons of Pritha and the Somakas assembled in battle.)

अहं सेनाप्रणेता ते भविष्यामि न संशयः। तं च व्यूहं विधास्यामि न तरिष्यन्ति यं परे ॥ इति सत्यं ब्रवीम्येष दुर्योधन न संशयः ॥९-६-४॥

(I will become your leader of the army, no doubt. And I will arrange that formation which the enemies will not cross. Thus, I speak this truth, Duryodhana, no doubt.)

(Thus spoken, then the king easily anointed the lord of Madras in the midst of the army, O best of the Bharatas, according to the rules as per the scriptures, joyful in appearance, O lord of the people.)

त्वं हि शक्तो रणे जेतुं ससुरासुरमानवान्। मर्त्यधर्माण इह तु किमु सोमकसृञ्जयान् ॥९-६-९॥
tvaṁ hi śakto raṇe jetuṁ sasurāsuramānavān। martyadharmāṇa iha tu kimu somakasṛñjayān ॥9-6-9॥

एवं संस्तूयमानस्तु मद्राणामधिपो बली। हर्षं प्राप तदा वीरो दुरापमकृतात्मभिः ॥९-६-१०॥
evaṃ saṃstūyamānastu madrāṇāmadhipo balī। harṣaṃ prāpa tadā vīro durāpamakṛtātmabhiḥ ॥9-6-10॥

(The Panchalas and the Edas, indeed, the sons of Draupadi, all; Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandi, and all the Prabhadrakas also.)

विक्रमं मम पश्यन्तु धनुषश्च महद्बलम्। लाघवं चास्त्रवीर्यं च भुजयोश्च बलं युधि ॥९-६-१४॥
vikramaṁ mama paśyantu dhanuṣaśca mahadbalam। lāghavaṁ cāstravīryaṁ ca bhujayośca balaṁ yudhi ॥9-6-14॥
[विक्रमं (vikramaṁ) - valor; मम (mama) - my; पश्यन्तु (paśyantu) - let them see; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; च (ca) - and; महत् (mahat) - great; बलम् (balam) - strength; लाघवं (lāghavaṁ) - lightness; च (ca) - and; अस्त्रवीर्यं (astravīryaṁ) - prowess in weapons; च (ca) - and; भुजयोः (bhujayoḥ) - of the arms; च (ca) - and; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Let them see my valor, the great strength of the bow, lightness, prowess in weapons, and the strength of the arms in battle.)

(Today, having seen my valor, let the great warriors of the Pandavas, intent on counteraction, act in various ways.)

(When Śalya was anointed, O giver of honor, your armies did not consider the grief for Karna at all there, O descendant of Bharata.)

हृष्टाः सुमनसश्चैव बभूवुस्तत्र सैनिकाः। मेनिरे निहतान्पार्थान्मद्रराजवशं गतान् ॥९-६-१९॥

(In the entire world with gods, there would be no man other than you who could kill the angry Madra king in battle, O descendant of Kuru, disturbing your army day by day.)

तस्माज्जहि रणे शल्यं मघवानिव शम्बरम्। अतिपश्चादसौ वीरो धार्तराष्ट्रेण सत्कृतः ॥९-६-३२॥
tasmājjahi raṇe śalyaṃ maghavāniva śambaram। atipaścād asau vīro dhārtarāṣṭreṇa satkṛtaḥ ॥9-6-32॥

(Your victory is indeed certain when the king of Madra is slain in battle. When he is slain, all the great forces of the sons of Dhritarashtra are defeated.)
"Your victory is assured once the king of Madra is killed in battle. With his fall, the entire mighty force of Dhritarashtra's sons will be vanquished."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज वचनं मम साम्प्रतम्। प्रत्युद्याहि रणे पार्थ मद्रराजं महाबलम् ॥ जहि चैनं महाबाहो वासवो नमुचिं यथा ॥९-६-३४॥
etacchrutvā mahārāja vacanaṃ mama sāmpratam। pratyudyāhi raṇe pārtha madrarājaṃ mahābalam ॥ jahi cainaṃ mahābāho vāsavo namuciṃ yathā ॥9-6-34॥

(Having heard this, O great king, my words at present, go forth to meet in battle, O son of Pritha, the mighty king of Madra. Slay him, O mighty-armed one, as Indra (slew) Namuci.)
Upon hearing these words of mine, O great king, at this moment, go forth to meet the mighty king of Madra in battle, O son of Pritha. Slay him, O mighty-armed one, just as Indra slew Namuci.
न चैवात्र दया कार्या मातुलोऽयं ममेति वै। क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य जहि मद्रजनेश्वरम् ॥९-६-३५॥
na caivātra dayā kāryā mātulo'yaṃ mameti vai। kṣatradharmaṃ puraskṛtya jahi madrajaneśvaram ॥9-6-35॥

(And certainly, here compassion should not be done, as this is my uncle, indeed. Having placed the warrior's duty in front, slay the king of Madra.)

भीष्मद्रोणार्णवं तीर्त्वा कर्णपातालसम्भवम्। मा निमज्जस्व सगणः शल्यमासाद्य गोष्पदम् ॥९-६-३६॥
bhīṣmadroṇārṇavaṃ tīrtvā karṇapātālasambhavam। mā nimajjasva sagaṇaḥ śalyamāsādya goṣpadam ॥9-6-36॥

(Having crossed the ocean of Bhishma and Drona, and the abyss of Karna's origin, do not drown with your followers upon reaching Shalya, which is like a cow's hoofprint.)
After overcoming the formidable challenges posed by Bhishma and Drona, and the deep-rooted threat of Karna, do not falter with your forces when you encounter Shalya, as it is insignificant like a cow's hoofprint.
यच्च ते तपसो वीर्यं यच्च क्षात्रं बलं तव। तद्दर्शय रणे सर्वं जहि चैनं महारथम् ॥९-६-३७॥
yacca te tapaso vīryaṃ yacca kṣātraṃ balaṃ tava। taddarśaya raṇe sarvaṃ jahi cainaṃ mahāratham ॥9-6-37॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; क्षात्रम् (kṣātram) - of a warrior; बलम् (balam) - power; तव (tava) - your; तत् (tat) - that; दर्शय (darśaya) - show; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; जहि (jahi) - conquer; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior;]
(And whatever strength of penance and power of a warrior you possess, show all that in battle and conquer this great chariot-warrior.)

When Keshava had departed, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, after dismissing all his brothers, the Panchalas, and the Somakas, slept that night like an unwounded elephant.
ते च सर्वे महेष्वासाः पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवास्तथा। कर्णस्य निधने हृष्टाः सुषुपुस्तां निशां तदा ॥९-६-४०॥
te ca sarve maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavāstathā। karṇasya nidhane hṛṣṭāḥ suṣupustāṃ niśāṃ tadā ॥9-6-40॥

(They, all great archers, the Panchalas and the Pandavas, rejoiced at the death of Karna and then slept that night.)
The Panchalas and Pandavas, all great archers, were filled with joy at Karna's death and slept peacefully that night.
गतज्वरं महेष्वासं तीर्णपारं महारथम्। बभूव पाण्डवेयानां सैन्यं प्रमुदितं निशि ॥ सूतपुत्रस्य निधने जयं लब्ध्वा च मारिष ॥९-६-४१॥
