Pancharatra and Core: The Kaurava army retreats; Duryodhana faces defeat at the hands of Bhima; unable to withstand Yudhisthira, Shalya is taken away by Ashwatthama.

(Then, O lord, your armies, led by the king of Madra, again attacked the sons of Pritha with great speed in battle.)

पीडितास्तावकाः सर्वे प्रधावन्तो रणोत्कटाः। क्षणेनैव च पार्थांस्ते बहुत्वात्समलोडयन् ॥९-१५-२॥

(Afflicted, all your men, fierce in battle, were running away. In a moment, indeed, they overwhelmed the sons of Pritha due to large numbers.)

ते वध्यमानाः कुरुभिः पाण्डवा नावतस्थिरे। निवार्यमाणा भीमेन पश्यतोः कृष्णपार्थयोः ॥९-१५-३॥

(They, being attacked by the Kauravas, the Pandavas did not stand firm, being restrained by Bhima in the sight of Krishna and Arjuna.)
The Pandavas, under attack by the Kauravas, could not hold their ground as Bhima restrained them, all while Krishna and Arjuna watched.
ततो धनञ्जयः क्रुद्धः कृपं सह पदानुगैः। अवाकिरच्छरौघेण कृतवर्माणमेव च ॥९-१५-४॥

(Then Dhananjaya, angry, showered Kripa and his followers with arrows, and also Kritavarma.)
Then, in his anger, Dhananjaya showered a torrent of arrows upon Kripa and his followers, as well as Kritavarma.
शकुनिं सहदेवस्तु सहसैन्यमवारयत्। नकुलः पार्श्वतः स्थित्वा मद्रराजमवैक्षत ॥९-१५-५॥

(Sahadeva stopped Shakuni with the army. Nakula, standing from the side, looked at the Madra king.)
Sahadeva, with his army, halted Shakuni. Meanwhile, Nakula stood aside and observed the Madra king.
द्रौपदेया नरेन्द्रांश्च भूयिष्ठं समवारयन्। द्रोणपुत्रं च पाञ्चाल्यः शिखण्डी समवारयत् ॥९-१५-६॥

(The sons of Draupadī mostly restrained the kings. The Pāñcāla prince Śikhaṇḍī restrained the son of Droṇa.)

भीमसेनस्तु राजानं गदापाणिरवारयत्। शल्यं तु सह सैन्येन कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥९-१५-७॥

(Bhimasena, with mace in hand, stopped the king. But Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, along with the army, stopped Shalya.)

ततः समभवद्युद्धं संसक्तं तत्र तत्र ह। तावकानां परेषां च सङ्ग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ॥९-१५-८॥

(Then there arose a battle, engaged here and there indeed, of your side and the enemies, of those who do not retreat in battles.)
Then a fierce battle arose, engaged at various places, between your forces and the enemies, all of whom were determined not to retreat.
तत्र पश्यामहे कर्म शल्यस्यातिमहद्रणे। यदेकः सर्वसैन्यानि पाण्डवानामयुध्यत ॥९-१५-९॥
tatra paśyāmahe karma śalyasyātimahadraṇe। yadekaḥ sarvasainyāni pāṇḍavānāmayudhyata ॥9-15-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; पश्यामहे (paśyāmahe) - we see; कर्म (karma) - action; शल्यस्य (śalyasya) - of Śalya; अतिमहत् (atimahat) - very great; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यत् (yat) - which; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; सर्व (sarva) - all; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; अयुध्यत (ayudhyata) - fought;]
(There we see the action of Śalya, very great in battle, which one fought against all the armies of the Pāṇḍavas.)
There we witness the mighty deeds of Śalya in battle, where he single-handedly fought against all the armies of the Pāṇḍavas.
व्यदृश्यत तदा शल्यो युधिष्ठिरसमीपतः। रणे चन्द्रमसोऽभ्याशे शनैश्चर इव ग्रहः ॥९-१५-१०॥
vyadṛśyata tadā śalyo yudhiṣṭhirasamīpataḥ। raṇe candramaso'bhyāśe śanaiścara iva grahaḥ ॥9-15-10॥

(Then Śalya was seen near Yudhishthira in battle, like Saturn near the moon.)
Śalya appeared near Yudhishthira on the battlefield, resembling Saturn close to the moon.
पीडयित्वा तु राजानं शरैराशीविषोपमैः। अभ्यधावत्पुनर्भीमं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥९-१५-११॥
pīḍayitvā tu rājānaṃ śarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ। abhyadhāvatpunarbhīmaṃ śaravarṣairavākirat ॥9-15-11॥
[पीडयित्वा (pīḍayitvā) - having tormented; तु (tu) - but; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; आशीविष-उपमैः (āśīviṣa-upamaiḥ) - like serpents; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed at; पुनः (punar) - again; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhima; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; अवाकिरत् (avākirat) - covered;]
(Having tormented the king with arrows like serpents, he rushed again at Bhima and covered him with showers of arrows.)
After tormenting the king with serpent-like arrows, he once again charged at Bhima, enveloping him in a rain of arrows.
तस्य तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा तथैव च कृतास्त्रताम्। अपूजयन्ननीकानि परेषां तावकानि च ॥९-१५-१२॥
tasya tallāghavaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathaiva ca kṛtāstratām। apūjayannanīkāni pareṣāṃ tāvakāni ca ॥9-15-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; लाघवम् (lāghavam) - lightness; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; कृत (kṛta) - made; अस्त्रताम् (astratām) - skill in weapons; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - honored; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - armies; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of the enemies; तावकानि (tāvakāni) - yours; च (ca) - and;]
(Having seen his lightness and skill in weapons, the armies of both the enemies and yours honored him in the same way.)
Seeing his agility and skill in weaponry, both the enemy's and your armies honored him equally.
पीड्यमानास्तु शल्येन पाण्डवा भृशविक्षताः। प्राद्रवन्त रणं हित्वा क्रोशमाने युधिष्ठिरे ॥९-१५-१३॥
pīḍyamānāstu śalyena pāṇḍavā bhṛśavikṣatāḥ। prādravanta raṇaṃ hitvā krośamāne yudhiṣṭhire ॥9-15-13॥

(The great chariot-warrior, having made up his mind, whether it be victory or defeat, called all his brothers and Krishna and Madhava, and said:)
The great warrior, resolved on either victory or defeat, summoned all his brothers along with Krishna and Madhava, and spoke to them.
भीष्मो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च ये चान्ये पृथिवीक्षितः। कौरवार्थे पराक्रान्ताः सङ्ग्रामे निधनं गताः ॥९-१५-१६॥

(Bhishma, Drona, and Karna, and other kings of the earth, valiantly attained death in battle for the sake of the Kauravas.)

चक्ररक्षाविमौ शूरौ मम माद्रवतीसुतौ। अजेयौ वासवेनापि समरे वीरसंमतौ ॥९-१५-१९॥
cakrarakṣāvimau śūrau mama mādravatīsutau। ajeyau vāsavenāpi samare vīrasaṃmatau ॥9-15-19॥
[चक्ररक्षा (cakrarakṣā) - protectors of the wheel; विमौ (vimau) - these two; शूरौ (śūrau) - heroes; मम (mama) - my; माद्रवती (mādravatī) - Madravati; सुतौ (sutau) - sons; अजेयौ (ajeyau) - invincible; वासवेन (vāsavena) - by Indra; अपि (api) - even; समरे (samare) - in battle; वीरसंमतौ (vīrasaṃmatau) - approved by heroes;]
(These two heroes, my sons of Madravati, protectors of the wheel, are invincible even by Indra in battle, approved by heroes.)

[साधु (sādhu) - good; इमौ (imau) - these two; मातुलम् (mātulam) - maternal uncle; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; क्षत्रधर्म (kṣatradharma) - warrior's duty; पुरस्कृतौ (puraskṛtau) - placed in front; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my sake; प्रतियुध्येताम् (pratiyudhyetām) - should fight against; मानार्हौ (mānārhau) - worthy of honor; सत्यसङ्गरौ (satyasaṅgarau) - true to their word in battle;]
(These two, good and worthy of honor, should fight against the maternal uncle in battle, placed in front for my sake, true to their word in battle.)

Upon witnessing his formidable actions in the battle, all your warriors were struck with fear, yet Śalya advanced towards him.
