Pancharatra and Core: On this eighteenth day, Arjuna recounts the events of the war, the foolishness of Duryodhana, and destroys the remaining Kaurava army.

tasmiñśabde mṛdau jāte pāṇḍavairnihate bale। aśvaiḥ saptaśataiḥ śiṣṭairupāvartata saubalaḥ ॥9-23-1॥

(In that soft sound arisen, with the army slain by the Pandavas, Saubala returned with seven hundred remaining horses.)

स यात्वा वाहिनीं तूर्णमब्रवीत्त्वरयन्युधि। युध्यध्वमिति संहृष्टाः पुनः पुनररिंदमः ॥ अपृच्छत्क्षत्रियांस्तत्र क्व नु राजा महारथः ॥९-२३-२॥

(He, having gone to the army, quickly said, urging in battle, "Fight!" Thus delighted, again and again, the subduer of enemies asked the warriors there, "Where indeed is the king, the great chariot-warrior?")
He went to the army quickly and urged them in battle, saying, "Fight!" The delighted subduer of enemies repeatedly asked the warriors there, "Where indeed is the king, the great chariot-warrior?"
शकुनेस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा त ऊचुर्भरतर्षभ। असौ तिष्ठति कौरव्यो रणमध्ये महारथः ॥९-२३-३॥
śakunestu vacaḥ śrutvā ta ūcurbharatarṣabha। asau tiṣṭhati kauravyo raṇamadhye mahārathaḥ ॥9-23-3॥

(Having heard the words of Shakuni, they said, "O best of the Bharatas, this Kaurava stands in the midst of the battle as a great chariot warrior.")
Upon hearing Shakuni's words, they remarked, "O esteemed Bharata, the Kaurava stands valiantly in the center of the battlefield as a great warrior."
यत्रैतत्सुमहच्छत्रं पूर्णचन्द्रसमप्रभम्। यत्रैते सतलत्राणा रथास्तिष्ठन्ति दंशिताः ॥९-२३-४॥

(Where this very great umbrella, equal in splendor to the full moon, is; where these chariots with floors stand adorned.)
Where this very large umbrella, shining like the full moon, is present; where these chariots with protective floors stand beautifully adorned.
यत्रैष शब्दस्तुमुलः पर्जन्यनिनदोपमः। तत्र गच्छ द्रुतं राजंस्ततो द्रक्ष्यसि कौरवम् ॥९-२३-५॥
yatraiṣa śabdastumulaḥ parjanyaninadopamaḥ। tatra gaccha drutaṃ rājaṃstato drakṣyasi kauravam ॥9-23-5॥

(Where this tumultuous sound like the roar of clouds is, there go quickly, O king, then you will see the Kaurava.)
"Where there is this tumultuous sound resembling the roar of clouds, go there quickly, O king, and then you will see the Kaurava."
एवमुक्तस्तु तैः शूरैः शकुनिः सौबलस्तदा। प्रययौ तत्र यत्रासौ पुत्रस्तव नराधिप ॥ सर्वतः संवृतो वीरैः समरेष्वनिवर्तिभिः ॥९-२३-६॥

(Thus spoken by those heroes, Shakuni, the son of Subala, then went there where your son was, O king, surrounded from all sides by heroes who do not retreat in battles.)
Upon being addressed by those valiant warriors, Shakuni, the son of Subala, proceeded to the place where your son was, O king, encircled by fearless warriors on all sides.
ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा रथानीके व्यवस्थितम्। सरथांस्तावकान्सर्वान्हर्षयञ्शकुनिस्ततः ॥९-२३-७॥
tato duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā rathānīke vyavasthitam। sarathāṁstāvakānsarvānharṣayañśakunistataḥ ॥9-23-7॥

(Then, having seen Duryodhana arranged in the army of chariots, cheering all your charioteers, Shakuni then.)
Then Shakuni, seeing Duryodhana arranged in the army of chariots, cheered all your charioteers.
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं हृष्टरूपो विशां पते। कृतकार्यमिवात्मानं मन्यमानोऽब्रवीन्नृपम् ॥९-२३-८॥
duryodhanamidaṁ vākyaṁ hṛṣṭarūpo viśāṁ pate। kṛtakāryamivātmānaṁ manyamāno'bravīnnṛpam ॥9-23-8॥

(Duryodhana, joyful in appearance, thinking himself as if having accomplished the task, said this speech to the lord of the people, the king.)

जहि राजन्रथानीकमश्वाः सर्वे जिता मया। नात्यक्त्वा जीवितं सङ्ख्ये शक्यो जेतुं युधिष्ठिरः ॥९-२३-९॥
jahi rājanrathānīkamaśvāḥ sarve jitā mayā। nātyaktvā jīvitaṃ saṅkhye śakyo jetuṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥9-23-9॥

हते तस्मिन्रथानीके पाण्डवेनाभिपालिते। गजानेतान्हनिष्यामः पदातींश्चेतरांस्तथा ॥९-२३-१०॥
hate tasmin rathānīke pāṇḍavenābhipālite। gajān etān haniṣyāmaḥ padātīṁś cātarāṁs tathā ॥9-23-10॥

(Having been killed in that chariot army protected by the Pandava, we shall kill these elephants and other foot soldiers also.)

(Having heard his words, your men, eager for victory, rushed with speed, elated, towards the army of the Pandavas.)
Upon hearing his words, your men, filled with the desire for victory, joyfully rushed with great speed towards the Pandava army.
सर्वे विवृततूणीराः प्रगृहीतशरासनाः। शरासनानि धुन्वानाः सिंहनादं प्रचक्रिरे ॥९-२३-१२॥
sarve vivṛtatūṇīrāḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanāḥ। śarāsanāni dhunvānāḥ siṃhanādaṃ pracakrire ॥9-23-12॥

All the warriors, with their quivers open and bows in hand, shook their bows and roared like lions.
ततो ज्यातलनिर्घोषः पुनरासीद्विशां पते। प्रादुरासीच्छराणां च सुमुक्तानां सुदारुणः ॥९-२३-१३॥
tato jyātalanirghoṣaḥ punarāsīdviśāṃ pate। prādurāsīccharāṇāṃ ca sumuktānāṃ sudāruṇaḥ ॥9-23-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ज्यातलनिर्घोषः (jyātalanirghoṣaḥ) - sound of the bowstring; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - appeared; शराणां (śarāṇāṃ) - of arrows; च (ca) - and; सुमुक्तानां (sumuktānāṃ) - well-released; सुदारुणः (sudāruṇaḥ) - very terrible;]
(Then, O lord of the people, the sound of the bowstring was heard again. The very terrible sound of well-released arrows appeared.)

तान्समीपगतान्दृष्ट्वा जवेनोद्यतकार्मुकान्। उवाच देवकीपुत्रं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः ॥९-२३-१४॥
tānsamīpagatāndṛṣṭvā javenodyatakārmukān। uvāca devakīputraṃ kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ ॥9-23-14॥

(Seeing them approached swiftly with raised bows, Kunti's son Dhananjaya said to Devaki's son.)
Upon seeing them swiftly approaching with their bows raised, Arjuna, the son of Kunti, spoke to Krishna, the son of Devaki.
चोदयाश्वानसम्भ्रान्तः प्रविशैतद्बलार्णवम्। अन्तमद्य गमिष्यामि शत्रूणां निशितैः शरैः ॥९-२३-१५॥
codayāśvānasaṃbhrāntaḥ praviśaitadbalārṇavam। antamadya gamiṣyāmi śatrūṇāṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥9-23-15॥
[चोदय (codaya) - urge; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; असम्भ्रान्तः (asaṃbhrāntaḥ) - unperturbed; प्रविश (praviśa) - enter; एतत् (etat) - this; बल (bala) - army; अर्णवम् (arṇavam) - ocean; अन्तम् (antam) - end; अद्य (adya) - today; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will reach; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Urge the horses unperturbed, enter this ocean of army. Today, I will reach the end of enemies with sharp arrows.)
"Urge the horses without fear and enter this vast army. Today, I shall bring an end to the enemies with my sharp arrows."
अष्टादश दिनान्यद्य युद्धस्यास्य जनार्दन। वर्तमानस्य महतः समासाद्य परस्परम् ॥९-२३-१६॥
aṣṭādaśa dinānyadya yuddhasyāsya janārdana। vartamānasya mahataḥ samāsādya parasparam ॥9-23-16॥

(Eighteen days today of the battle, O Janardana, having approached each other of the ongoing great.)
O Janardana, today marks the eighteenth day of this great ongoing battle, where both sides have approached each other.
अनन्तकल्पा ध्वजिनी भूत्वा ह्येषां महात्मनाम्। क्षयमद्य गता युद्धे पश्य दैवं यथाविधम् ॥९-२३-१७॥
anantakalpā dhvajinī bhūtvā hyeṣāṃ mahātmanām। kṣayam adya gatā yuddhe paśya daivaṃ yathāvidham ॥9-23-17॥

(Having become an endless army, indeed, of these great souls, today has gone to destruction in battle; see the fate as it is.)

समुद्रकल्पं तु बलं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव। अस्मानासाद्य सञ्जातं गोष्पदोपममच्युत ॥९-२३-१८॥
samudrakalpaṃ tu balaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava। asmānāsādya sañjātaṃ goṣpadopamamacyuta ॥9-23-18॥

(The ocean-like strength of Dhritarashtra's sons, O Madhava, becomes like a cow's hoofprint upon approaching us, O Acyuta.)
O Madhava, the vast strength of Dhritarashtra's sons diminishes to insignificance, like a cow's hoofprint, when it comes near us, O Acyuta.
हते भीष्मे च संदध्याच्छिवं स्यादिह माधव। न च तत्कृतवान्मूढो धार्तराष्ट्रः सुबालिशः ॥९-२३-१९॥
hate bhīṣme ca saṁdadhyācchivaṁ syād iha mādhava। na ca tatkṛtavān mūḍho dhārtarāṣṭraḥ subāliśaḥ ॥9-23-19॥
[हते (hate) - when slain; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; संदध्यात् (saṁdadhyāt) - should make peace; शिवं (śivam) - auspicious; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इह (iha) - here; माधव (mādhava) - O Madhava; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - foolish; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; सुबालिशः (subāliśaḥ) - very childish;]
(When Bhishma was slain, O Madhava, it would have been auspicious to make peace here. But the foolish and very childish son of Dhritarashtra did not do that.)

उक्तं भीष्मेण यद्वाक्यं हितं पथ्यं च माधव। तच्चापि नासौ कृतवान्वीतबुद्धिः सुयोधनः ॥९-२३-२०॥

(Who indeed, having heard the beneficial words from Jamadagni as they were, disregarded them, the foolish one is certainly situated in the face of destruction.)
