Library: Up on Janamejaya's enquiry, Vaishampayana narrates the pilgrimage. How the moon was cursed and how Prabhasa became the foremost of holy places.
janamejaya uvāca॥
Janamejaya said:
pūrvameva yadā rāmas tasmin yuddha upasthite। āmantrya keśavaṃ yāto vṛṣṇibhiḥ sahitaḥ prabhuḥ ॥9-34-1॥
Previously, when Rama was present at the battle, he addressed Krishna and then the lord departed with the Vrishnis.
sāhāyyaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrasya na ca kartāsmi keśava। na caiva pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam ॥9-34-2॥
O Keshava, I will not assist Dhritarashtra's son, nor will I return to the sons of Pandu as I came.
evamuktvā tadā rāmo yātaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ। tasya cāgamanaṃ bhūyo brahmañśaṃsitumarhasi ॥9-34-3॥
Having said this, Rama, the destroyer of enemies, departed. O Brahman, you should narrate his return again.
ākhyāhi me vistarataḥ kathaṁ rāma upasthitaḥ। kathaṁ ca dṛṣṭavānyuddhaṁ kuśalo hyasi sattama ॥9-34-4॥
Please tell me in detail how Rama arrived and how you witnessed the battle, as you are indeed skilled, O noble one.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaishampayana said:
upaplavye niviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। preṣito dhṛtarāṣṭrasya samīpaṃ madhusūdanaḥ ॥ śamaṃ prati mahābāho hitārthaṃ sarvadehinām ॥9-34-5॥
In Upaplavya, where the Pandavas, the great souls, were settled, Madhusudana was sent to Dhritarashtra to negotiate peace, O mighty-armed one, for the welfare of all living beings.
sa gatvā hāstinapuraṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ sametya ca। uktavānvacanaṃ tathyaṃ hitaṃ caiva viśeṣataḥ॥ na ca tatkṛtavānrājā yathākhyātaṃ hi te purā॥9-34-6॥
He went to Hastinapura, met Dhritarashtra, and spoke true and beneficial words, especially. However, the king did not act as was previously told to you.
anavāpya śamaṃ tatra kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣasattamaḥ। āgacchata mahābāhurupaplavyaṃ janādhipa ॥9-34-7॥
Krishna, the best among men, unable to find peace there, came to Upaplavya, O mighty-armed ruler of men.
tataḥ pratyāgataḥ kṛṣṇo dhārtarāṣṭravisarjitaḥ। akriyāyāṃ naravyāghra pāṇḍavānidamabravīt ॥9-34-8॥
Then Krishna, having been dismissed by Dhritarashtra, returned to the Pandavas, who were in a state of inactivity, and addressed them as the tigers among men.
na kurvanti vaco mahyaṁ kuravaḥ kālacoditāḥ। nirgacchadhvaṁ pāṇḍaveyāḥ puṣyeṇa sahitā mayā ॥9-34-9॥
The Kurus, driven by the force of time, ignore my words. O sons of Pandu, leave with Pushya and me.
tato vibhajyamāneṣu baleṣu balināṃ varaḥ। provāca bhrātaraṃ kṛṣṇaṃ rauhiṇeyo mahāmanāḥ ॥9-34-10॥
Then, as the armies were being divided, the great-minded Balarama, the son of Rohini and the best among the strong, spoke to his brother Krishna.
teṣāmapi mahābāho sāhāyyaṃ madhusūdana। kriyatāmiti tatkṛṣṇo nāsya cakre vacastadā ॥9-34-11॥
O mighty-armed one, O slayer of Madhu, please assist them as well. However, Krishna did not act upon his words at that time.
tato manyuparītātmā jagāma yadunandanaḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ haladharaḥ sarasvatyāṃ mahāyaśāḥ ॥ maitre nakṣatrayoge sma sahitaḥ sarvayādavaiḥ ॥9-34-12॥
Then, Balarama, the descendant of Yadu, filled with anger, embarked on a pilgrimage to the Sarasvati River, accompanied by all the Yadavas, under the Maitra constellation.
āśrayāmāsa bhojastu duryodhanamariṃdamaḥ। yuyudhānena sahito vāsudevastu pāṇḍavān ॥9-34-13॥
Bhoja, known for subduing enemies, aligned himself with Duryodhana, while Vasudeva, along with Yuyudhana, sided with the Pandavas.
rauhiṇeye gate śūre puṣyeṇa madhusūdanaḥ। pāṇḍaveyān puraskṛtya yayāv abhimukhaḥ kurūn ॥9-34-14॥
Krishna, the heroic son of Rohini, set out under the Pushya constellation, leading the Pandavas towards the Kauravas.
gacchanneva pathisthastu rāmaḥ preṣyānuvāca ha। sambhārāṁstīrthayātrāyāṁ sarvopakaraṇāni ca ॥ ānayadhvaṁ dvārakāyā agnīnvai yājakāṁstathā ॥9-34-15॥
Rama, while standing on the path, instructed his messengers to bring all the necessary materials and equipment for the pilgrimage, including the sacred fires and priests from Dvaraka.
suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ caiva dhenūrvāsāṁsi vājinaḥ। kuñjarāṁśca rathāṁścaiva kharoṣṭraṁ vāhanāni ca ॥
"Bring quickly all the gold, silver, cows, garments, horses, elephants, chariots, donkeys, camels, and vehicles."
pratisrotaḥ sarasvatyā gacchadhvaṃ śīghragāminaḥ। ṛtvijaścānayadhvaṃ vai śataśaśca dvijarṣabhān ॥9-34-17॥
"Proceed against the current of the Sarasvati swiftly. Indeed, bring hundreds of priests and the best of the twice-born."
evaṃ saṃdiśya tu preṣyānbaladevo mahābalaḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ yayau rājankurūṇāṃ vaiśase tadā ॥ sarasvatīṃ pratīsrotaḥ samudrādabhijagmivān ॥9-34-18॥
Thus, after instructing his messengers, the mighty Balarama embarked on a pilgrimage during the Kurus' calamity, O king. At that time, he approached the river Sarasvati, moving against its current from the ocean.
ṛtvigbhiśca suhṛdbhiśca tathānyairdvijasattamaiḥ। rathairgajaistathāśvaiśca preṣyaiśca bharatarṣabha ॥ gokharoṣṭraprayuktaiśca yānaiśca bahubhirvṛtaḥ ॥9-34-19॥
O best of the Bharatas, you are surrounded by priests, friends, the best of the twice-born, chariots, elephants, horses, servants, cows, donkeys, camels, and many vehicles.
śrāntānāṃ klāntavapuṣāṃ śiśūnāṃ vipulāyuṣām। tāni yānāni deśeṣu pratīkṣyante sma bhārata ॥ bubhukṣitānāmarthāya kḷptamannaṃ samantataḥ ॥9-34-20॥
The vehicles awaited in the countries were for the tired and weary-bodied children who have long lives, O Bharata. Food was prepared everywhere for the hungry.
yo yo yatra dvijo bhoktuṃ kāmaṃ kāmayate tadā। tasya tasya tu tatraivamupajahrustadā nṛpa ॥9-34-21॥
O king, whenever and wherever a Brahmin desires to fulfill a wish, then and there, it is brought to him.
tatra sthitā narā rājanrauhiṇeyasya śāsanāt। bhakṣyapeyasya kurvanti rāśīṃstatra samantataḥ ॥9-34-22॥
There, O king, the men standing by the command of Rauhiṇeya make heaps of food and drink all around.
vāsāṃsi ca mahārhāṇi paryaṅkāstaraṇāni ca। pūjārthaṃ tatra kḷptāni viprāṇāṃ sukhamicchatām ॥9-34-23॥
Garments and very costly beds and coverings were arranged there for the comfort of the brahmanas who desired to perform worship.
yatra yaḥ svapate vipraḥ kṣatriyo vāpi bhārata। tatra tatra tu tasyaiva sarvaṁ kḷptamadṛśyata ॥9-34-24॥
O Bharata, wherever a Brahmin or Kshatriya sleeps, all his arrangements are visible there.
yathāsukhaṃ janaḥ sarvastiṣṭhate yāti vā tadā। yātukāmasya yānāni pānāni tṛṣitasya ca ॥9-34-25॥
When everyone is at ease, they either stay or leave as they wish. For those who wish to travel, there are vehicles, and for the thirsty, there are drinks.
bubhukṣitasya cānnāni svādūni bharatarṣabha। upajahrurnarāstatra vastrāṇyābharaṇāni ca ॥9-34-26॥
O best of the Bharatas, the people there brought delicious food, clothes, and ornaments for the hungry person.
sa panthāḥ prababhau rājansarvasyaiva sukhāvahaḥ। svargopamastadā vīra narāṇāṃ tatra gacchatām ॥9-34-27॥
That path shone brightly, O king, bringing happiness to everyone. It was like heaven for the brave men who traveled there.
nityapramuditopetaḥ svādubhakṣaḥ śubhānvitaḥ। vipaṇyāpaṇapaṇyānāṃ nānājanaśatairvṛtaḥ ॥ nānādrumalatopeto nānāratnavibhūṣitaḥ ॥9-34-28॥
The place is always cheerful, filled with delicious food and auspiciousness, surrounded by hundreds of people with market goods, adorned with various trees and decorated with jewels.
tato mahātmā niyame sthitātmā; puṇyeṣu tīrtheṣu vasūni rājan। dadau dvijebhyaḥ kratudakṣiṇāśca; yadupravīro halabhṛtpratītaḥ ॥9-34-29॥
Then the great soul, who was self-disciplined, distributed wealth in holy places to the brahmins as sacrificial gifts, O king. The hero of the Yadus, known for wielding the plough, was renowned.
dogdhrīśca dhenūśca sahasraśo vai; suvāsasaḥ kāñcanabaddhaśṛṅgīḥ। hayāṃśca nānāvidhadeśajātā; nyānāni dāsīśca tathā dvijebhyaḥ ॥9-34-30॥
Thousands of milking cows and cows, well-dressed with golden-bound horns, horses from various countries, vehicles, and maidservants were given to the brahmins.
ratnāni muktāmaṇividrumaṃ ca; śṛṅgīsuvarṇaṃ rajataṃ ca śubhram। ayasmayaṃ tāmramayaṃ ca bhāṇḍaṃ; dadau dvijātipravareṣu rāmaḥ ॥9-34-31॥
Rama generously distributed various precious items such as gems, pearls, corals, rubies, gold, silver, and pure vessels made of iron and copper to the esteemed Brahmins.
evaṃ sa vittaṃ pradadau mahātmā; sarasvatītīrthavareṣu bhūri। yayau krameṇāpratimaprabhāva; stataḥ kurukṣetramudāravṛttaḥ ॥9-34-32॥
Thus, the great soul generously distributed wealth at the sacred sites of Sarasvati. With unmatched influence, he gradually proceeded to Kurukshetra, known for his noble character.
janamejaya uvāca॥
Janamejaya said:
sārasvatānāṃ tīrthānāṃ guṇotpattiṃ vadasva me। phalaṃ ca dvipadāṃ śreṣṭha karmanirvṛttimeva ca ॥9-34-33॥
Please tell me about the origin of virtues of the Sarasvatas and the holy places, as well as the results and the best completion of actions of humans.
yathākramam ca bhagavaṃstīrthānāmanupūrvaśaḥ। brahmanbrahmavidāṃ śreṣṭha paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me ॥9-34-34॥
O revered one, please describe to me in order the holy places sequentially, as my curiosity is great, O Brahman, best among the knowers of Brahman.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
tīrthānāṃ vistaraṃ rājangunotpattiṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। mayocyamānāṃ śṛṇu vai puṇyāṃ rājendra kṛtsnaśaḥ ॥9-34-35॥
O King, listen to the complete description of the sacred places and the origin of virtues, as narrated by me. It is entirely auspicious, O King of Kings.
pūrvaṃ mahārāja yadupravīra; ṛtvik-suhṛd-vipraganaiśca sārdham। puṇyaṃ prabhāsaṃ samupājagāma; yatroḍurāḍyakṣmaṇā kliśyamānaḥ ॥9-34-36॥
Once, O great king, the valiant hero of the Yadu dynasty, accompanied by priests, friends, and groups of brāhmaṇas, went to the holy place of Prabhāsa, where the moon was suffering from consumption.
vimuktaśāpaḥ punarāpya tejaḥ; sarvaṃ jagadbhāsayate narendra। evaṃ tu tīrthapravaraṃ pṛthivyāṃ; prabhāsanāttasya tataḥ prabhāsaḥ ॥9-34-37॥
Freed from the curse, the king regains his splendor and illuminates the entire world. Thus, the foremost pilgrimage site on earth is known as Prabhāsa, originating from Prabhāsa.
janamejaya uvāca॥
Janamejaya said:
kimarthaṁ bhagavānsomo yakṣmaṇā samagṛhyata। kathaṁ ca tīrthapravare tasmiṁścandro nyamajjata ॥9-34-38॥
"For what reason was the revered Soma afflicted by disease? And how did the moon submerge in that most sacred of places?"
kathamāplutya tasmiṃstu punarāpyāyitaḥ śaśī। etanme sarvamācakṣva vistareṇa mahāmune ॥9-34-39॥
"How did the moon, having plunged into that, become nourished again? Please tell me everything in detail, O great sage."
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaishampayana said:
dakṣasya tanayā yāstāḥ prādurāsanviśāṃ pate। sa saptaviṃśatiṃ kanyā dakṣaḥ somāya vai dadau ॥9-34-40॥
The daughters of Daksha appeared, O lord of the people. Daksha gave those twenty-seven daughters to Soma.
nakṣatrayoganiratāḥ saṅkhyānārthaṃ ca bhārata। patnyo vai tasya rājendra somasya śubhalakṣaṇāḥ ॥9-34-41॥
O Bharata, the wives of Soma, who are engaged in the conjunction of stars for counting, are indeed auspicious, O king.
tāstu sarvā viśālākṣyo rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi। atyaricyata tāsāṃ tu rohiṇī rūpasampadā ॥9-34-42॥
All of them were large-eyed and incomparable in beauty on earth, but Rohini surpassed them all with her beauty.
tatastasyāṃ sa bhagavānprītiṃ cakre niśākaraḥ। sāsya hṛdyā babhūvātha tasmāttāṃ bubhuje sadā ॥9-34-43॥
Then the blessed moon made affection in her. She became pleasing to him, and therefore he always enjoyed her.
purā hi somo rājendra rohiṇyām avasac ciram। tato'sya kupitāny āsann akṣatrāṇi mahātmanaḥ ॥9-34-44॥
Once upon a time, Soma, the moon god, resided in the constellation Rohiṇī for a long period. Then, the stars associated with him became angry, O great king.
tā gatvā pitaraṃ prāhuḥ prajāpati-matandritāḥ। somo vasati nāsmāsu rohiṇīṃ bhajate sadā ॥9-34-45॥
They went to their father, Prajapati, and said with diligence, "Soma does not stay with us; he is always with Rohini."
tā vayaṃ sahitāḥ sarvāstvatsakāśe prajeśvara। vatsyāmo niyatāhārāstapaścaraṇatatparāḥ ॥9-34-46॥
We all, united, will stay near you, O lord of creatures, with a regulated diet and dedicated to practicing austerities.
śrutvā tāsāṃ tu vacanaṃ dakṣaḥ somamathābravīt। samaṃ vartasva bhāryāsu mā tvādharmo mahānspṛśet ॥9-34-47॥
Upon hearing their words, Daksha advised Soma to treat all his wives equally to avoid falling into great unrighteousness.
tāśca sarvābravīddakṣo gacchadhvaṃ somamantikāt। samaṃ vatsyati sarvāsu candramā mama śāsanāt ॥9-34-48॥
Daksha instructed all the daughters to go near Soma, stating that by his command, the moon would spend equal time with each of them.
visṛṣṭāstāstadā jagmuḥ śītāṃśubhavanaṃ tadā। tathāpi somo bhagavānpunareva mahīpate ॥ rohiṇīṃ nivasatyeva prīyamāṇo muhurmuḥuḥ ॥9-34-49॥
Released, they went to the abode of the moon. However, Soma, the divine, continues to reside with Rohini lovingly, time and again, O king.
tatastāḥ sahitāḥ sarvā bhūyaḥ pitaramabruvan। tava śuśrūṣaṇe yuktā vatsyāmo hi tavāśrame ॥ somo vasati nāsmāsu nākarodvacanaṃ tava ॥9-34-50॥
Then they all together again addressed their father, saying: "We are engaged in your service and shall indeed reside in your hermitage. Soma does not live among us and did not convey your message."
tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā dakṣaḥ somamathābravīt। samaṃ vartasva bhāryāsu mā tvāṃ śapsye virocana ॥9-34-51॥
Upon hearing their words, Daksha addressed Soma: "Treat all your wives equally, or else I shall curse you, Virocana."
anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṃ dakṣasya bhagavāñśaśī। rohiṇyā sārdhamavasattatastāḥ kupitāḥ punaḥ ॥9-34-52॥
Disregarding Daksha's words, the moon god lived with Rohini, which made them angry once more.
gatvā ca pitaraṃ prāhuḥ praṇamya śirasā tadā। somo vasati nāsmāsu tasmānnaḥ śaraṇaṃ bhava ॥9-34-53॥
After going to their father and bowing their heads, they said, "Soma is not among us, so please be our refuge."
rohiṇyāmeva bhagavansadā vasati candramāḥ। tasmānnastrāhi sarvā vai yathā naḥ soma āviśet ॥9-34-54॥
O Lord, the Moon always resides in Rohini. Therefore, protect us all so that Soma may enter our lives.
tacchrutvā bhagavānkruddho yakṣmāṇaṃ pṛthivīpate। sasarja roṣātsomāya sa coḍupatimāviśat ॥9-34-55॥
Upon hearing that, the Lord, in his anger, created a disease for Soma and entered the moon, O king.
sa yakṣmaṇābhibhūtātmākṣīyataāharaḥ śaśī। yatnaṃ cāpyakarodrājanmokṣārthaṃ tasya yakṣmaṇaḥ ॥9-34-56॥
The moon, overpowered by disease, was waning day by day. Efforts were made, O king, for liberation from that disease.
iṣṭveṣṭibhirmahārāja vividhābhirniśākaraḥ। na cāmucyata śāpādvai kṣayaṃ caivābhyagacchat ॥9-34-57॥
O great king, despite performing various sacrifices, the moon was not freed from the curse and inevitably faced decay.
kṣīyamāṇe tataḥ some oṣadhyo na prajajñire। nirāsvādarasāḥ sarvā hatavīryāśca sarvaśaḥ ॥9-34-58॥
As the Soma waned, the herbs failed to sprout. They became tasteless and lost their potency entirely.
oṣadhīnāṃ kṣaye jāte prāṇināmapi saṅkṣayaḥ। kṛśāścāsanprajāḥ sarvāḥ kṣīyamāṇe niśākare ॥9-34-59॥
When the herbs were destroyed, the living beings also faced destruction. All creatures became emaciated as the moon was waning.
tato devāḥ samāgamya somamūcurmahīpate। kimidaṃ bhavato rūpamīdṛśaṃ na prakāśate ॥9-34-60॥
Then the gods gathered and said to Soma, "O king, why does your form not appear as it should?"
kāraṇaṁ brūhi naḥ sarvaṁ yenedaṁ te mahadbhayam। śrutvā tu vacanaṁ tvatto vidhāsyāmas tato vayam ॥9-34-61॥
Please tell us the reason for this great fear you have. Once we hear your words, we will make the necessary arrangements.
evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca sarvāṃstāñśaśalakṣaṇaḥ। śāpaṃ ca kāraṇaṃ caiva yakṣmāṇaṃ ca tathātmanaḥ ॥9-34-62॥
Thus addressed, the one with rabbit marks replied to all of them, explaining the curse, the reason, the disease, and also about himself.
devās tasya vacaḥ śrutvā gatvā dakṣam athābruvan। prasīda bhagavan some śāpaś caiṣa nivartyatām ॥9-34-63॥
The gods, upon hearing his words, approached Daksha and requested, "O Lord, please be gracious. May the curse on Soma be lifted."
asau hi candramāḥ kṣīṇaḥ kiñciccheṣo hi lakṣyate। kṣayāccaivāsya deveśa prajāścāpi gatāḥ kṣayam ॥9-34-64॥
The moon is indeed waning and only slightly remains visible. Due to this decline, O lord of the gods, the creatures too have met their decline.
vīrudoṣadhayaścaiva bījāni vividhāni ca। tathā vayaṃ lokaguro prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ॥9-34-65॥
O teacher of the world, we seek your grace for the various herbs, medicinal plants, and seeds.
evamuktastadā cintya prāha vākyaṃ prajāpatiḥ। naitacchakyaṃ mama vaco vyāvartayitumanyathā ॥ hetunā tu mahābhāgā nivartiṣyati kenacit ॥9-34-66॥
Prajapati, after contemplating, said: "It is impossible to change my words. However, O fortunate one, she will desist for some reason."
samaṁ vartatu sarvāsu śaśī bhāryāsu nityaśaḥ। sarasvatyā vare tīrthe unmajjajñaśalakṣaṇaḥ ॥ punarvardhiṣyate devāstadvai satyaṁ vaco mama ॥9-34-67॥
"May the moon always shine equally upon all wives. In the sacred place of Sarasvati, marked by the hare, the gods will rise again. This is truly my promise."
māsārdhaṃ ca kṣayaṃ somo nityameva gamiṣyati। māsārdhaṃ ca sadā vṛddhiṃ satyametadvaco mama ॥9-34-68॥
The moon will always wane for half a month and wax for the other half. This is my true statement.
sarasvatīṁ tataḥ somo jagāma ṛṣiśāsanāt। prabhāsaṁ paramaṁ tīrthaṁ sarasvatyā jagāma ha ॥9-34-69॥
Then, by the command of the sage, Soma went to the river Sarasvatī. He indeed proceeded to Prabhāsa, the supreme pilgrimage site associated with Sarasvatī.
amāvāsyāṃ mahātejāstatronmajjnamahādyutiḥ। lokānprabhāsayāmāsa śītāṃśutvamavāpa ca ॥9-34-70॥
On the new moon night, a being of great radiance emerged there, illuminating the worlds and attaining the state of moonlight.
devāśca sarve rājendra prabhāsaṃ prāpya puṣkalam। somena sahitā bhūtvā dakṣasya pramukhe'bhavan ॥9-34-71॥
O King, all the gods, having reached Prabhasa, joined with Soma, became prominent in the presence of Daksha.
tataḥ prajāpatiḥ sarvā visasarjātha devatāḥ। somaṃ ca bhagavānprīto bhūyo vacanamabravīt ॥9-34-72॥
Then Prajapati released all the gods. Pleased, the blessed one spoke to Soma once more.
māvamaṁsthāḥ striyaḥ putra mā ca viprānkadācana। gaccha yuktaḥ sadā bhūtvā kuru vai śāsanaṁ mama ॥9-34-73॥
"Son, never disrespect women or brahmins. Always remain engaged and follow my command."
sa visṛṣṭo mahārāja jagāmātha svamālayam। prajāśca muditā bhūtvā bhojane ca yathā purā ॥9-34-74॥
The great king, having been released, returned to his own palace. The subjects rejoiced and celebrated with feasting as they did in the past.
etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ yathā śapto niśākaraḥ। prabhāsaṃ ca yathā tīrthaṃ tīrthānāṃ pravaraṃ hyabhūt ॥9-34-75॥

amāvāsyāṃ mahārāja nityaśaḥ śaśalakṣaṇaḥ। snātvā hyāpyāyate śrīmānprabhāse tīrtha uttame ॥9-34-76॥
On the new moon day, O great king, the moon, having bathed, indeed becomes invigorated at the best holy place of Prabhasa.
ataś cainaṃ prajānanti prabhāsam iti bhūmipa। prabhāṃ hi paramāṃ lebhe tasmin nunmajjya candramāḥ ॥9-34-77॥
Therefore, O king, this place is known as Prabhasa. It is said that the moon, upon emerging there, acquired supreme brilliance.
tatastu camasodbhēdamacyutastvagamadbalī। camasodbhēda ityēvaṁ yaṁ janāḥ kathayantyuta ॥9-34-78॥
Then, however, Acyuta went to Camasodbhēda, whom people indeed refer to as Camasodbhēda.
tatra dattvā ca dānāni viśiṣṭāni halāyudhaḥ। uṣitvā rajanīmekāṃ snātvā ca vidhivattadā ॥9-34-79॥
There, Halayudha gave excellent gifts and spent one night there; then, he bathed properly.
udapānam athāgacchat tvarāvān keśavāgrajaḥ। ādyaṃ svastyayanaṃ caiva tatrāvāpya mahatphalam ॥9-34-80॥
The elder brother of Keshava hurriedly came to the water-well and performed the first auspicious ritual there, achieving a significant result.
snigdhavādoṣadhīnāṃ ca bhūmeśca janamejaya। jānanti siddhā rājendra naṣṭāmapi sarasvatīm ॥9-34-81॥
O Janamejaya, due to the smoothness of the herbs and the earth, the perfected ones, O king of kings, are able to know even the lost Sarasvati.
