साहाय्यं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य न च कर्तास्मि केशव। न चैव पाण्डुपुत्राणां गमिष्यामि यथागतम् ॥९-३४-२॥

(I am not the doer of help for Dhritarashtra's son, O Keshava. Nor will I go to the sons of Pandu as I came.)
O Keshava, I will not assist Dhritarashtra's son, nor will I return to the sons of Pandu as I came.
एवमुक्त्वा तदा रामो यातः शत्रुनिबर्हणः। तस्य चागमनं भूयो ब्रह्मञ्शंसितुमर्हसि ॥९-३४-३॥
evamuktvā tadā rāmo yātaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ। tasya cāgamanaṃ bhūyo brahmañśaṃsitumarhasi ॥9-34-3॥

(Thus having spoken, then Rama, the destroyer of enemies, departed. His arrival again, O Brahman, you should tell.)

आख्याहि मे विस्तरतः कथं राम उपस्थितः। कथं च दृष्टवान्युद्धं कुशलो ह्यसि सत्तम ॥९-३४-४॥

अनवाप्य शमं तत्र कृष्णः पुरुषसत्तमः। आगच्छत महाबाहुरुपप्लव्यं जनाधिप ॥९-३४-७॥
anavāpya śamaṃ tatra kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣasattamaḥ। āgacchata mahābāhurupaplavyaṃ janādhipa ॥9-34-7॥

(Not attaining peace there, Krishna, the best among men, came, O mighty-armed ruler of men, to Upaplavya.)

ततः प्रत्यागतः कृष्णो धार्तराष्ट्रविसर्जितः। अक्रियायां नरव्याघ्र पाण्डवानिदमब्रवीत् ॥९-३४-८॥
tataḥ pratyāgataḥ kṛṣṇo dhārtarāṣṭravisarjitaḥ। akriyāyāṃ naravyāghra pāṇḍavānidamabravīt ॥9-34-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रत्यागतः (pratyāgataḥ) - returned; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; धार्तराष्ट्रविसर्जितः (dhārtarāṣṭravisarjitaḥ) - dismissed by Dhritarashtra; अक्रियायाम् (akriyāyām) - in inactivity; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pandavas; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then Krishna, dismissed by Dhritarashtra, returned and said this to the Pandavas, the tigers among men, in their inactivity.)

न कुर्वन्ति वचो मह्यं कुरवः कालचोदिताः। निर्गच्छध्वं पाण्डवेयाः पुष्येण सहिता मया ॥९-३४-९॥
na kurvanti vaco mahyaṁ kuravaḥ kālacoditāḥ। nirgacchadhvaṁ pāṇḍaveyāḥ puṣyeṇa sahitā mayā ॥9-34-9॥

(The Kurus, prompted by time, do not heed my words. Depart, sons of Pandu, together with Pushya and me.)
The Kurus, driven by the force of time, ignore my words. O sons of Pandu, leave with Pushya and me.
ततो विभज्यमानेषु बलेषु बलिनां वरः। प्रोवाच भ्रातरं कृष्णं रौहिणेयो महामनाः ॥९-३४-१०॥
tato vibhajyamāneṣu baleṣu balināṃ varaḥ। provāca bhrātaraṃ kṛṣṇaṃ rauhiṇeyo mahāmanāḥ ॥9-34-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विभज्यमानेषु (vibhajyamāneṣu) - being divided; बलेषु (baleṣu) - among the armies; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to brother; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Krishna; रौहिणेयः (rauhiṇeyaḥ) - son of Rohini; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Then, among the armies being divided, the best of the strong, the great-minded son of Rohini, said to his brother Krishna.)

तेषामपि महाबाहो साहाय्यं मधुसूदन। क्रियतामिति तत्कृष्णो नास्य चक्रे वचस्तदा ॥९-३४-११॥
teṣāmapi mahābāho sāhāyyaṃ madhusūdana। kriyatāmiti tatkṛṣṇo nāsya cakre vacastadā ॥9-34-11॥

(O mighty-armed one, O slayer of Madhu, let help be done for them also. Thus, Krishna did not do his words then.)
O mighty-armed one, O slayer of Madhu, please assist them as well. However, Krishna did not act upon his words at that time.
ततो मन्युपरीतात्मा जगाम यदुनन्दनः। तीर्थयात्रां हलधरः सरस्वत्यां महायशाः ॥ मैत्रे नक्षत्रयोगे स्म सहितः सर्वयादवैः ॥९-३४-१२॥
tato manyuparītātmā jagāma yadunandanaḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ haladharaḥ sarasvatyāṃ mahāyaśāḥ ॥ maitre nakṣatrayoge sma sahitaḥ sarvayādavaiḥ ॥9-34-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मन्युपरीतात्मा (manyuparītātmā) - with a mind overcome by anger; जगाम (jagāma) - went; यदुनन्दनः (yadunandanaḥ) - descendant of Yadu; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; हलधरः (haladharaḥ) - Balarama; सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - to the Sarasvati; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; मैत्रे (maitre) - in the Maitra; नक्षत्रयोगे (nakṣatrayoge) - under the asterism; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together with; सर्वयादवैः (sarvayādavaiḥ) - all the Yadavas;]
(Then, with a mind overcome by anger, the descendant of Yadu, Balarama of great fame, went on a pilgrimage to the Sarasvati, under the Maitra asterism, together with all the Yadavas.)
Then, Balarama, the descendant of Yadu, filled with anger, embarked on a pilgrimage to the Sarasvati River, accompanied by all the Yadavas, under the Maitra constellation.
आश्रयामास भोजस्तु दुर्योधनमरिंदमः। युयुधानेन सहितो वासुदेवस्तु पाण्डवान् ॥९-३४-१३॥
āśrayāmāsa bhojastu duryodhanamariṃdamaḥ। yuyudhānena sahito vāsudevastu pāṇḍavān ॥9-34-13॥
[आश्रयामास (āśrayāmāsa) - took refuge; भोजः (bhojaḥ) - Bhoja; तु (tu) - but; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - subduer of enemies; युयुधानेन (yuyudhānena) - with Yuyudhana; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pandavas;]
(Bhoja, the subduer of enemies, took refuge with Duryodhana; but Vasudeva, together with Yuyudhana, (took refuge) with the Pandavas.)
Bhoja, known for subduing enemies, aligned himself with Duryodhana, while Vasudeva, along with Yuyudhana, sided with the Pandavas.
रौहिणेये गते शूरे पुष्येण मधुसूदनः। पाण्डवेयान्पुरस्कृत्य ययावभिमुखः कुरून् ॥९-३४-१४॥
rauhiṇeye gate śūre puṣyeṇa madhusūdanaḥ। pāṇḍaveyān puraskṛtya yayāv abhimukhaḥ kurūn ॥9-34-14॥
[रौहिणेये (rauhiṇeye) - son of Rohini; गते (gate) - having gone; शूरे (śūre) - heroic; पुष्येण (puṣyeṇa) - under the Pushya constellation; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Krishna; पाण्डवेयान् (pāṇḍaveyān) - the Pandavas; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; ययौ (yayau) - went; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - towards; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kauravas;]
(When the heroic son of Rohini, Krishna, under the Pushya constellation, went, placing the Pandavas in front, towards the Kauravas.)

गच्छन्नेव पथिस्थस्तु रामः प्रेष्यानुवाच ह। सम्भारांस्तीर्थयात्रायां सर्वोपकरणानि च ॥ आनयध्वं द्वारकाया अग्नीन्वै याजकांस्तथा ॥९-३४-१५॥

(Going indeed, standing on the path, Rama said to the messengers: "Bring the materials for the pilgrimage, all equipment, and also the fires and the priests from Dvaraka.")

सुवर्णं रजतं चैव धेनूर्वासांसि वाजिनः। कुञ्जरांश्च रथांश्चैव खरोष्ट्रं वाहनानि च ॥
suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ caiva dhenūrvāsāṁsi vājinaḥ। kuñjarāṁśca rathāṁścaiva kharoṣṭraṁ vāhanāni ca ॥
[सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; रजतम् (rajatam) - silver; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धेनुः (dhenuḥ) - cows; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - garments; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; कुञ्जरान् (kuñjarān) - elephants; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; खरः (kharaḥ) - donkeys; उष्ट्रम् (uṣṭram) - camels; वाहनानि (vāhanāni) - vehicles; च (ca) - and;]
(Gold, silver, and indeed cows, garments, horses, elephants, chariots, and indeed donkeys, camels, and vehicles.)

प्रतिस्रोतः सरस्वत्या गच्छध्वं शीघ्रगामिनः। ऋत्विजश्चानयध्वं वै शतशश्च द्विजर्षभान् ॥९-३४-१७॥
pratisrotaḥ sarasvatyā gacchadhvaṃ śīghragāminaḥ। ṛtvijaścānayadhvaṃ vai śataśaśca dvijarṣabhān ॥9-34-17॥

एवं संदिश्य तु प्रेष्यान्बलदेवो महाबलः। तीर्थयात्रां ययौ राजन्कुरूणां वैशसे तदा ॥ सरस्वतीं प्रतिस्रोतः समुद्रादभिजग्मिवान् ॥९-३४-१८॥
evaṃ saṃdiśya tu preṣyānbaladevo mahābalaḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ yayau rājankurūṇāṃ vaiśase tadā ॥ sarasvatīṃ pratīsrotaḥ samudrādabhijagmivān ॥9-34-18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; संदिश्य (saṃdiśya) - having instructed; तु (tu) - but; प्रेष्यान् (preṣyān) - messengers; बलदेवः (baladevaḥ) - Balarama; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; ययौ (yayau) - went; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; वैशसे (vaiśase) - in the calamity; तदा (tadā) - then; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvati; प्रतिस्रोतः (pratīsrotaḥ) - against the current; समुद्रात् (samudrāt) - from the ocean; अभिजग्मिवान् (abhijagmivān) - approached;]
(Thus, having instructed the messengers, the mighty Balarama went on a pilgrimage, O king, during the calamity of the Kurus. Then he approached the Sarasvati against the current from the ocean.)
Thus, after instructing his messengers, the mighty Balarama embarked on a pilgrimage during the Kurus' calamity, O king. At that time, he approached the river Sarasvati, moving against its current from the ocean.
ऋत्विग्भिश्च सुहृद्भिश्च तथान्यैर्द्विजसत्तमैः। रथैर्गजैस्तथाश्वैश्च प्रेष्यैश्च भरतर्षभ ॥ गोखरोष्ट्रप्रयुक्तैश्च यानैश्च बहुभिर्वृतः ॥९-३४-१९॥
ṛtvigbhiśca suhṛdbhiśca tathānyairdvijasattamaiḥ। rathairgajaistathāśvaiśca preṣyaiśca bharatarṣabha ॥ gokharoṣṭraprayuktaiśca yānaiśca bahubhirvṛtaḥ ॥9-34-19॥
