तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्प्रीतः सस्माराथ सरस्वतीम्। पितामहेन यजता आहूता पुष्करेषु वै ॥ सुप्रभा नाम राजेन्द्र नाम्ना तत्र सरस्वती ॥९-३७-१२॥

तां दृष्ट्वा मुनयस्तुष्टा वेगयुक्तां सरस्वतीम्। पितामहं मानयन्तीं क्रतुं ते बहु मेनिरे ॥९-३७-१३॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā munayastuṣṭā vegayuktāṃ sarasvatīm। pitāmahaṃ mānayantīṃ kratuṃ te bahu menire ॥9-37-13॥

(Formerly, Maṅkaṇaka, a perfected being, with the tip of a blade of grass, thus to us heard. Wounded indeed in the hand, O King, his vegetable juice flowed. He indeed, seeing the vegetable juice, filled with joy, danced.)
It is said that once the sage Maṅkaṇaka, who had attained perfection, pricked his hand with the tip of a blade of grass. Astonishingly, instead of blood, vegetable juice flowed from the wound. Seeing this, he was filled with joy and began to dance.
ततस्तस्मिन्प्रनृत्ते वै स्थावरं जङ्गमं च यत्। प्रनृत्तमुभयं वीर तेजसा तस्य मोहितम् ॥९-३७-३५॥
tatastasminpranṛtte vai sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ ca yat। pranṛttamubhayaṃ vīra tejasā tasya mohitam ॥9-37-35॥

(Then, in that dance indeed, both the immovable and movable, which danced, O hero, were bewildered by his splendor.)

[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage said:)
The sage spoke:
किं न पश्यसि मे ब्रह्मन्कराच्छाकरसं स्रुतम्। यं दृष्ट्वा वै प्रनृत्तोऽहं हर्षेण महता विभो ॥९-३७-३९॥
kiṁ na paśyasi me brahmankarācchākarasaṁ srutam। yaṁ dṛṣṭvā vai pranṛtto'haṁ harṣeṇa mahatā vibho ॥9-37-39॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; न (na) - not; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; मे (me) - my; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; करात् (karāt) - from the hand; शाकरसं (śākarasaṁ) - vegetable juice; स्रुतम् (srutam) - spilled; यम् (yam) - which; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रनृत्तः (pranṛttaḥ) - danced; अहम् (aham) - I; हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; महता (mahatā) - great; विभो (vibho) - O Lord;]
(What, do you not see, O Brahman, the vegetable juice spilled from my hand? Having seen it, indeed, I danced with great joy, O Lord.)
"O Brahman, can't you see the vegetable juice spilled from my hand? Seeing it, I danced with immense joy, O Lord."
तं प्रहस्याब्रवीद्देवो मुनिं रागेण मोहितम्। अहं न विस्मयं विप्र गच्छामीति प्रपश्य माम् ॥९-३७-४०॥
taṁ prahasyābravīddevo muniṁ rāgeṇa mohitam। ahaṁ na vismayaṁ vipra gacchāmīti prapaśya mām ॥9-37-40॥
[तं (tam) - him; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; मुनिम् (munim) - to the sage; रागेण (rāgeṇa) - with passion; मोहितम् (mohitam) - deluded; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; विप्र (vipra) - O sage; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - go; इति (iti) - thus; प्रपश्य (prapaśya) - see; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Smiling, the god said to the sage, who was deluded by passion: "I do not go into wonder, O sage, see me thus.")
The god, with a smile, addressed the sage who was deluded by passion, saying, "O sage, I am not surprised; behold me."
एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठं महादेवेन धीमता। अङ्गुल्यग्रेण राजेन्द्र स्वाङ्गुष्ठस्ताडितोऽभवत् ॥९-३७-४१॥
evamuktvā muniśreṣṭhaṃ mahādevena dhīmatā। aṅgulyagreṇa rājendra svāṅguṣṭhastāḍito'bhavat ॥9-37-41॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; मुनिश्रेष्ठम् (muniśreṣṭham) - O best of sages; महादेवेन (mahādevena) - by Mahadeva; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; अङ्गुल्यग्रेण (aṅgulyagreṇa) - with the tip of the finger; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; स्व (sva) - own; अङ्गुष्ठ (aṅguṣṭha) - thumb; ताडितः (tāḍitaḥ) - struck; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Thus, having spoken, O best of sages, by the wise Mahadeva, with the tip of the finger, O king of kings, his own thumb was struck.)
After speaking thus, the wise Mahadeva, with the tip of his finger, struck his own thumb, O best of sages and king of kings.
ततो भस्म क्षताद्राजन्निर्गतं हिमसंनिभम्। तद्दृष्ट्वा व्रीडितो राजन्स मुनिः पादयोर्गतः ॥९-३७-४२॥
tato bhasma kṣatādrājannirgataṃ himasaṃnibham। taddṛṣṭvā vrīḍito rājansa muniḥ pādayorgataḥ ॥9-37-42॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भस्म (bhasma) - ash; क्षतात् (kṣatāt) - from the wound; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निर्गतम् (nirgatam) - emerged; हिमसंनिभम् (himasaṃnibham) - snow-like; तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at the feet; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Then ash, snow-like, emerged from the wound, O king. Having seen that, ashamed, O king, the sage went to the feet.)
Then, O king, snow-like ash emerged from the wound. Seeing this, the sage, feeling ashamed, went to the feet.
ऋषिरुवाच॥

[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage said:)
The sage spoke:
नान्यं देवादहं मन्ये रुद्रात्परतरं महत्। सुरासुरस्य जगतो गतिस्त्वमसि शूलधृक् ॥९-३७-४३॥
nānyaṃ devādahaṃ manye rudrātparataraṃ mahat। surāsurasya jagato gatistvamasi śūladhṛk ॥9-37-43॥
[न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; देवात् (devāt) - than the god; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; रुद्रात् (rudrāt) - than Rudra; परतरम् (parataram) - greater; महत् (mahat) - great; सुर (sura) - of gods; असुरस्य (asurasya) - of demons; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the refuge; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; शूलधृक् (śūladhṛk) - the trident-holder;]
(I do not think there is any god greater than Rudra. You are the refuge of the gods and demons of the world, O trident-holder.)
I believe there is no deity greater than Rudra. You are the protector of both gods and demons in the universe, O wielder of the trident.
त्वया सृष्टमिदं विश्वं वदन्तीह मनीषिणः। त्वामेव सर्वं विशति पुनरेव युगक्षये ॥९-३७-४४॥
tvayā sṛṣṭamidaṃ viśvaṃ vadantīha manīṣiṇaḥ। tvāmeva sarvaṃ viśati punareva yugakṣaye ॥9-37-44॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सृष्टम् (sṛṣṭam) - created; इदम् (idam) - this; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; वदन्ति (vadanti) - say; इह (iha) - here; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (eva) - only; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; विशति (viśati) - enters; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - only; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of the age;]
(The wise here say that this universe is created by you; at the end of the age, all enters you again.)
The wise declare that you are the creator of this universe, and at the end of the age, everything merges back into you.
देवैरपि न शक्यस्त्वं परिज्ञातुं कुतो मया। त्वयि सर्वे स्म दृश्यन्ते सुरा ब्रह्मादयोऽनघ ॥९-३७-४५॥
devairapi na śakyastvaṃ parijñātuṃ kuto mayā। tvayi sarve sma dṛśyante surā brahmādayo'nagha ॥9-37-45॥
[देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; परिज्ञातुम् (parijñātum) - to be known; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; मया (mayā) - by me; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahma and others; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Even by the gods, you are not possible to be known; how by me? In you, indeed, all gods like Brahma and others are seen, O sinless one.)
Even the gods cannot fully comprehend you, so how can I? Within you, all the gods, including Brahma and others, are perceived, O sinless one.
सर्वस्त्वमसि देवानां कर्ता कारयिता च ह। त्वत्प्रसादात्सुराः सर्वे मोदन्तीहाकुतोभयाः ॥९-३७-४६॥
sarvastvamasi devānāṃ kartā kārayitā ca ha। tvatprasādātsurāḥ sarve modantīhākutobhayāḥ ॥9-37-46॥
[सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; कर्ता (kartā) - creator; कारयिता (kārayitā) - instigator; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मोदन्ति (modanti) - rejoice; इह (iha) - here; अकुतोभयाः (akutobhayāḥ) - fearless;]
(All you are of the gods creator instigator and indeed. By your grace gods all rejoice here fearless.)
You are the creator and instigator of all the gods. By your grace, all the gods rejoice here without fear.
एवं स्तुत्वा महादेवं स ऋषिः प्रणतोऽब्रवीत्। भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादाद्वै तपो मे न क्षरेदिति ॥९-३७-४७॥
evaṃ stutvā mahādevaṃ sa ṛṣiḥ praṇato'bravīt। bhagavaṃstvatprasādādvai tapo me na kṣarediti ॥9-37-47॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; स्तुत्वा (stutvā) - having praised; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - the great god; सः (saḥ) - he; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; वै (vai) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; क्षरेत् (kṣaret) - diminish; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus, having praised the great god, the sage, having bowed, said: "O Lord, by your grace indeed, may my penance not diminish.")
After praising the great god, the sage bowed and said, "O Lord, may my penance not diminish by your grace."
ततो देवः प्रीतमनास्तमृषिं पुनरब्रवीत्। तपस्ते वर्धतां विप्र मत्प्रसादात्सहस्रधा ॥ आश्रमे चेह वत्स्यामि त्वया सार्धमहं सदा ॥९-३७-४८॥
tato devaḥ prītamanāstamṛṣiṃ punarabravīt। tapaste vardhatāṃ vipra matprasādātsahasradhā ॥ āśrame ceha vatsyāmi tvayā sārdhamahaṃ sadā ॥9-37-48॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; प्रीतमनाः (prītamanāḥ) - pleased in mind; तम् (tam) - to him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; ते (te) - your; वर्धताम् (vardhatām) - may increase; विप्र (vipra) - O sage; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my grace; सहस्रधा (sahasradhā) - a thousandfold; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I shall dwell; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Then the god, pleased in mind, said to him, the sage, again: "O sage, may your penance increase a thousandfold by my grace. I shall dwell here in the hermitage with you always.")
Then the god, pleased with the sage, spoke again: "O sage, by my grace, your penance will increase a thousandfold. I will always stay here in the hermitage with you."
सप्तसारस्वते चास्मिन्यो मामर्चिष्यते नरः। न तस्य दुर्लभं किञ्चिद्भवितेह परत्र च ॥ सारस्वतं च लोकं ते गमिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥९-३७-४९॥
saptasārasvate cāsminyo mām arciṣyate naraḥ। na tasya durlabhaṃ kiñcid bhaviteha paratra ca ॥ sārasvataṃ ca lokaṃ te gamiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ ॥9-37-49॥
[सप्तसारस्वते (saptasārasvate) - in the seven Sarasvati; च (ca) - and; अस्मिन (asmin) - in this; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; अर्चिष्यते (arciṣyate) - will worship; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; दुर्लभं (durlabhaṃ) - difficult to obtain; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; भविते (bhavite) - will be; इह (iha) - here; परत्र (paratra) - in the other world; च (ca) - and; सारस्वतं (sārasvataṃ) - Sarasvati; च (ca) - and; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; ते (te) - they; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In the seven Sarasvati, whoever will worship me, that man will not find anything difficult to obtain, either here or in the other world. They will go to the world of Sarasvati, without a doubt.)
In the seven regions of Sarasvati, whoever worships me will find nothing difficult to obtain, either in this world or the next. They will surely reach the world of Sarasvati, without any doubt.
एतन्मङ्कणकस्यापि चरितं भूरितेजसः। स हि पुत्रः सजन्यायामुत्पन्नो मातरिश्वना ॥९-३७-५०॥
etanmaṅkaṇakasyāpi caritaṃ bhūritejasaḥ। sa hi putraḥ sajanyāyāmutpanno mātariśvanā ॥9-37-50॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; मङ्कणकस्य (maṅkaṇakasya) - of Maṅkaṇaka; अपि (api) - also; चरितम् (caritam) - story; भूरितेजसः (bhūritejasaḥ) - of great splendor; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सजन्यायाम् (sajanyāyām) - in Sajanya; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - born; मातरिश्वना (mātariśvanā) - by Mātariśvan;]
(This is also the story of Maṅkaṇaka of great splendor. He was indeed the son born in Sajanya by Mātariśvan.)
