उषित्वा तत्र रामस्तु सम्पूज्याश्रमवासिनः। तथा मङ्कणके प्रीतिं शुभां चक्रे हलायुधः ॥९-३८-१॥
uṣitvā tatra rāmas tu sampūjyāśramavāsinaḥ। tathā maṅkaṇake prītiṃ śubhāṃ cakre halāyudhaḥ ॥9-38-1॥
[उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having stayed; तत्र (tatra) - there; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; तु (tu) - but; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honored; आश्रमवासिनः (āśramavāsinaḥ) - the hermitage dwellers; तथा (tathā) - also; मङ्कणके (maṅkaṇake) - to Mankanaka; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - affection; शुभां (śubhāṃ) - auspicious; चक्रे (cakre) - made; हलायुधः (halāyudhaḥ) - Halayudha (Balarama);]
(Having stayed there, Rama, having honored the hermitage dwellers, also made auspicious affection to Mankanaka, Halayudha (Balarama).)

दत्त्वा दानं द्विजातिभ्यो रजनीं तामुपोष्य च। पूजितो मुनिसङ्घैश्च प्रातरुत्थाय लाङ्गली ॥९-३८-२॥
dattvā dānaṃ dvijātibhyo rajanīṃ tāmupoṣya ca। pūjito munisaṅghaiśca prātarutthāya lāṅgalī ॥9-38-2॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; दानं (dānaṃ) - charity; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; रजनीं (rajanīṃ) - night; ताम् (tām) - that; उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; च (ca) - and; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - worshipped; मुनिसङ्घैः (munisaṅghaiḥ) - by groups of sages; च (ca) - and; प्रातरुत्थाय (prātarutthāya) - having risen in the morning; लाङ्गली (lāṅgalī) - ploughman;]
(Having given charity to the twice-born and having fasted that night, the ploughman, worshipped by groups of sages, rose in the morning.)
After giving charity to the Brahmins and fasting through the night, the ploughman was honored by groups of sages and rose in the morning.
अनुज्ञाप्य मुनीन्सर्वान्स्पृष्ट्वा तोयं च भारत। प्रययौ त्वरितो रामस्तीर्थहेतोर्महाबलः ॥९-३८-३॥
anugñāpya munīnsarvānspr̥ṣṭvā toyaṃ ca bhārata। prayayau tvarito rāmas tīrthahetor mahābalaḥ ॥9-38-3॥
[अनुज्ञाप्य (anugñāpya) - having permitted; मुनीन् (munīn) - sages; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; स्पृष्ट्वा (spr̥ṣṭvā) - having touched; तोयं (toyam) - water; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; तीर्थहेतोः (tīrthahetoḥ) - for the purpose of pilgrimage; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty;]
(Having permitted all the sages and having touched the water, O Bhārata, the mighty Rama quickly departed for the purpose of pilgrimage.)
After seeking permission from all the sages and touching the water, mighty Rama quickly set out on a pilgrimage, O Bhārata.
तत औशनसं तीर्थमाजगाम हलायुधः। कपालमोचनं नाम यत्र मुक्तो महामुनिः ॥९-३८-४॥
tata auśanasaṃ tīrtham ājagāma halāyudhaḥ। kapālamocanaṃ nāma yatra mukto mahāmuniḥ ॥9-38-4॥
[तत् (tat) - then; औशनसम् (auśanasam) - of Uśanas; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - pilgrimage site; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; हलायुधः (halāyudhaḥ) - Halāyudha; कपालमोचनम् (kapālamocanam) - Kapālamocana; नाम (nāma) - named; यत्र (yatra) - where; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - liberated; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage;]
(Then Halāyudha arrived at the pilgrimage site of Uśanas, named Kapālamocana, where the great sage was liberated.)
Then Halāyudha reached the sacred place of Uśanas, known as Kapālamocana, where the great sage attained liberation.
महता शिरसा राजन्ग्रस्तजङ्घो महोदरः। राक्षसस्य महाराज रामक्षिप्तस्य वै पुरा ॥९-३८-५॥

O great king, Mahodara, the demon with seized thighs, was formerly thrown by Rama.
तत्र पूर्वं तपस्तप्तं काव्येन सुमहात्मना। यत्रास्य नीतिरखिला प्रादुर्भूता महात्मनः ॥ तत्रस्थश्चिन्तयामास दैत्यदानवविग्रहम् ॥९-३८-६॥
tatra pūrvaṃ tapastaptaṃ kāvyena sumahātmanā। yatrāsya nītirakhilā prādurbhūtā mahātmanaḥ ॥ tatrasthaścintayāmāsa daityadānavavigraham ॥9-38-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; तप्तम् (taptam) - performed; काव्येन (kāvyena) - by Kāvya; सुमहात्मना (sumahātmanā) - by the great soul; यत्र (yatra) - where; अस्य (asya) - his; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - policy; अखिला (akhilā) - entire; प्रादुर्भूता (prādurbhūtā) - manifested; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; तत्रस्थः (tatrasthaḥ) - situated there; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - pondered; दैत्य (daitya) - of the demons; दानव (dānava) - of the Danavas; विग्रहम् (vigraham) - conflict;]
(There, before, penance was performed by Kāvya, the great soul. Where his entire policy manifested, of the great soul. Situated there, he pondered over the conflict of the demons and Danavas.)
In that place, Kāvya, the great soul, had previously performed penance. It was there that his entire policy became manifest. While situated there, he contemplated the conflict between the demons and the Danavas.
तत्प्राप्य च बलो राजंस्तीर्थप्रवरमुत्तमम्। विधिवद्धि ददौ वित्तं ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम् ॥९-३८-७॥
tatprāpya ca balo rājaṃstīrthapravaramuttamam। vidhivaddhi dadau vittaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ mahātmanām ॥9-38-7॥
[तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; च (ca) - and; बलः (balaḥ) - Bala (a name); राजन् (rājan) - O king; तीर्थप्रवरम् (tīrthapravaram) - the best of holy places; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rules; हि (hi) - indeed; ददौ (dadau) - gave; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - to the Brahmins; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great souls;]
(Having obtained that, Bala, O king, indeed gave wealth to the great-souled Brahmins at the excellent best of holy places according to the rules.)
Upon reaching the best of holy places, Bala, O king, generously distributed wealth to the great-souled Brahmins, following the prescribed rules.

कपालमोचनं ब्रह्मन्कथं यत्र महामुनिः। मुक्तः कथं चास्य शिरो लग्नं केन च हेतुना ॥९-३८-८॥
kapālamocanaṃ brahmankathaṃ yatra mahāmuniḥ। muktaḥ kathaṃ cāsya śiro lagnaṃ kena ca hetunā ॥9-38-8॥

(O Brahman, how is Kapalamochana, where the great sage was liberated, and how was his head attached, and by whom and for what reason?)
O Brahman, please tell me about Kapalamochana, the place where the great sage was liberated. How did his head become attached again, and who was responsible for it and why?

पुरा वै दण्डकारण्ये राघवेण महात्मना। वसता राजशार्दूल राक्षसास्तत्र हिंसिताः ॥९-३८-९॥
purā vai daṇḍakāraṇye rāghaveṇa mahātmanā। vasatā rājaśārdūla rākṣasāstatra hiṃsitāḥ ॥9-38-9॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; वै (vai) - indeed; दण्डकारण्ये (daṇḍakāraṇye) - in Dandakaranya; राघवेण (rāghaveṇa) - by Rāghava; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great soul; वसता (vasatā) - while residing; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons; तत्र (tatra) - there; हिंसिताः (hiṃsitāḥ) - were killed;]
(Formerly indeed, in Dandakaranya, by Rāghava, the great soul, while residing, O tiger among kings, demons there were killed.)
Once upon a time, in the forest of Dandakaranya, the great Rāghava, while residing there, O tiger among kings, killed the demons.
जनस्थाने शिरश्छिन्नं राक्षसस्य दुरात्मनः। क्षुरेण शितधारेण तत्पपात महावने ॥९-३८-१०॥
janasthāne śiraśchinnaṃ rākṣasasya durātmanaḥ। kṣureṇa śitadhāreṇa tatpapāta mahāvane ॥9-38-10॥
[जनस्थाने (janasthāne) - in the place of people; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; छिन्नं (chinnaṃ) - severed; राक्षसस्य (rākṣasasya) - of the demon; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - wicked; क्षुरेण (kṣureṇa) - with a razor; शितधारेण (śitadhāreṇa) - sharp-edged; तत् (tat) - that; पपात (papāta) - fell; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest;]
(In the place of people, the severed head of the wicked demon fell with a sharp-edged razor in the great forest.)

महोदरस्य तल्लग्नं जङ्घायां वै यदृच्छया। वने विचरतो राजन्नस्थि भित्त्वास्फुरत्तदा ॥९-३८-११॥
mahodarasya tallagnaṁ jaṅghāyāṁ vai yadṛcchayā। vane vicarato rājannasthi bhittvāsphurattadā ॥9-38-11॥

(By chance, a bone attached to Mahodara's thigh indeed pierced and then twitched while wandering in the forest, O king.)

स तेन लग्नेन तदा द्विजातिर्न शशाक ह। अभिगन्तुं महाप्राज्ञस्तीर्थान्यायतनानि च ॥९-३८-१२॥
sa tena lagnena tadā dvijātirna śaśāka ha। abhigantuṃ mahāprājñastīrthānyāyatanāni ca ॥9-38-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - with that; लग्नेन (lagnena) - attached; तदा (tadā) - then; द्विजातिः (dvijātiḥ) - the twice-born; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; ह (ha) - indeed; अभिगन्तुम् (abhigantum) - to approach; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the wise one; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; आयतनानि (āyatanāni) - temples; च (ca) - and;]
(He, with that attachment, then the twice-born was not able indeed to approach the wise one, the holy places, and the temples.)
With that attachment, the twice-born was unable to approach the wise sage, the holy places, and the temples.
स पूतिना विस्रवता वेदनार्तो महामुनिः। जगाम सर्वतीर्थानि पृथिव्यामिति नः श्रुतम् ॥९-३८-१३॥
sa pūtinā visravatā vedanārto mahāmuniḥ। jagāma sarvatīrthāni pṛthivyāmiti naḥ śrutam ॥9-38-13॥
[स (sa) - he; पूतिना (pūtinā) - with foul-smelling; विस्रवता (visravatā) - flowing; वेदनार्तः (vedanārtaḥ) - pained; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सर्वतीर्थानि (sarvatīrthāni) - all sacred places; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(He, the great sage, pained with foul-smelling flowing, went to all sacred places on earth, thus it is heard by us.)
The great sage, afflicted by the foul-smelling flow, traveled to all the sacred places on earth, as we have heard.
स गत्वा सरितः सर्वाः समुद्रांश्च महातपाः। कथयामास तत्सर्वमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥९-३८-१४॥
sa gatvā saritaḥ sarvāḥ samudrāṃśca mahātapāḥ। kathayāmāsa tatsarvamṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥9-38-14॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; समुद्रान् (samudrān) - oceans; च (ca) - and; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - narrated; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of the enlightened ones;]
(He, having gone to all the rivers and oceans, the great ascetic narrated all that to the sages, the enlightened ones.)
He, the great ascetic, traveled to all the rivers and oceans and narrated everything to the sages who were enlightened.
आप्लुतः सर्वतीर्थेषु न च मोक्षमवाप्तवान्। स तु शुश्राव विप्रेन्द्रो मुनीनां वचनं महत् ॥९-३८-१५॥
āplutaḥ sarvatīrtheṣu na ca mokṣamavāptavān। sa tu śuśrāva viprendo munīnāṃ vacanaṃ mahat ॥9-38-15॥
[आप्लुतः (āplutaḥ) - bathed; सर्व (sarva) - all; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in holy places; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मोक्षम (mokṣam) - liberation; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - attained; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; विप्रेन्द्रः (viprendraḥ) - the best of the Brahmins; मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - of sages; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Bathed in all holy places, he did not attain liberation. But he, the best of the Brahmins, heard the great words of the sages.)
Having bathed in all the sacred places, he did not achieve liberation. However, the best among the Brahmins heard the profound teachings of the sages.
सरस्वत्यास्तीर्थवरं ख्यातमौशनसं तदा। सर्वपापप्रशमनं सिद्धक्षेत्रमनुत्तमम् ॥९-३८-१६॥
sarasvatyās tīrthavaraṃ khyātamauśanasaṃ tadā। sarvapāpapraśamanaṃ siddhakṣetram anuttamam ॥9-38-16॥
[सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvati; तीर्थवरं (tīrthavaraṃ) - the best of pilgrimage sites; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - famous; औशनसं (auśanasaṃ) - related to Uśanas; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्व (sarva) - all; पाप (pāpa) - sins; प्रशमनं (praśamanaṃ) - removal; सिद्ध (siddha) - perfected; क्षेत्रं (kṣetraṃ) - field; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed;]
(Then, the best of pilgrimage sites related to Uśanas, known as Sarasvati, is the unsurpassed field for the removal of all sins.)
Then, the renowned pilgrimage site associated with Uśanas, known as Sarasvati, is the ultimate sacred field for absolving all sins.
स तु गत्वा ततस्तत्र तीर्थमौशनसं द्विजः। तत औशनसे तीर्थे तस्योपस्पृशतस्तदा ॥ तच्छिरश्चरणं मुक्त्वा पपातान्तर्जले तदा ॥९-३८-१७॥
sa tu gatvā tatastatra tīrthamauśanasaṃ dvijaḥ। tata auśanase tīrthe tasyopaspṛśatastadā ॥ tacchiraścaraṇaṃ muktvā papātāntarjale tadā ॥9-38-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; तीर्थमौशनसं (tīrthamauśanasaṃ) - to the sacred place of Uśanas; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); तत (tata) - then; औशनसे (auśanase) - at the place of Uśanas; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - at the sacred place; तस्य (tasya) - his; उपस्पृशतः (upaspṛśataḥ) - while he was purifying; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - that; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; चरणं (caraṇaṃ) - foot; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having released; पपात (papāta) - fell; अन्तर्जले (antarjale) - into the water; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, having gone there, the twice-born (Brahmin) to the sacred place of Uśanas, then at the place of Uśanas, while he was purifying, then his head and foot, having released, fell into the water then.)
The Brahmin went to the sacred place of Uśanas. While he was purifying himself there, his head and foot, having been released, fell into the water.
ततः स विरुजो राजन्पूतात्मा वीतकल्मषः। आजगामाश्रमं प्रीतः कृतकृत्यो महोदरः ॥९-३८-१८॥
tataḥ sa virujo rājanpūtātmā vītakalmaṣaḥ। ājagāmāśramaṃ prītaḥ kṛtakṛtyo mahodaraḥ ॥9-38-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; विरुजः (virujaḥ) - free from disease; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पूतात्मा (pūtātmā) - pure-souled; वीतकल्मषः (vītakalmaṣaḥ) - free from sin; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - having accomplished his purpose; महोदरः (mahodaraḥ) - great-bellied;]
(Then he, free from disease, O king, pure-souled and free from sin, came to the hermitage, pleased and having accomplished his purpose, the great-bellied one.)

सोऽथ गत्वाश्रमं पुण्यं विप्रमुक्तो महातपाः। कथयामास तत्सर्वमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥९-३८-१९॥
so'tha gatvāśramaṃ puṇyaṃ vipramukto mahātapāḥ। kathayāmāsa tatsarvamṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥9-38-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - sacred; विप्रमुक्तः (vipramuktaḥ) - freed from curse; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - narrated; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - to the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of purified souls;]
(He, then having gone to the sacred hermitage, freed from curse, the great ascetic narrated all that to the sages of purified souls.)
Then, having been freed from the curse, the great ascetic went to the sacred hermitage and narrated everything to the sages with purified souls.
ते श्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य ततस्तीर्थस्य मानद। कपालमोचनमिति नाम चक्रुः समागताः ॥९-३८-२०॥
te śrutvā vacanaṃ tasya tatastīrthasya mānada। kapālamocanamiti nāma cakruḥ samāgatāḥ ॥9-38-20॥

(They, having heard his words, then, O giver of honor, named the holy place as 'Kapalamochana', having assembled.)
Upon hearing his words, they gathered and named the holy site 'Kapalamochana', honoring the giver of respect.
तत्र दत्त्वा बहून्दायान्विप्रान्सम्पूज्य माधवः। जगाम वृष्णिप्रवरो रुषङ्गोराश्रमं तदा ॥९-३८-२१॥
tatra dattvā bahūndāyānviprānsampūjya mādhavaḥ। jagāma vṛṣṇipravaro ruṣaṅgorāśramaṃ tadā ॥9-38-21॥
