katham ārṣṭiṣeṇo bhagavān vipulaṃ taptavāṃs tapaḥ। sindhudvīpaḥ kathaṃ cāpi brāhmaṇyaṃ labdhavāṃs tadā ॥9-39-1॥

देवापिश्च कथं ब्रह्मन्विश्वामित्रश्च सत्तम। तन्ममाचक्ष्व भगवन्परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥९-३९-२॥

(O Brahman, how did the gods and Viśvāmitra, O best one, tell me, O Lord, my great curiosity indeed.)
O Brahman, please tell me how the gods and Viśvāmitra, the best among them, are involved, as I am indeed very curious about it.

पुरा कृतयुगे राजन्नार्ष्टिषेणो द्विजोत्तमः। वसन्गुरुकुले नित्यं नित्यमध्ययने रतः ॥९-३९-३॥
purā kṛtayuge rājannārṣṭiṣeṇo dvijottamaḥ। vasangurukule nityaṃ nityamadhyayane rataḥ ॥9-39-3॥

Once upon a time, in the Krita Yuga, there was a sage named Shena, who was the best among the twice-born. He lived in the guru's abode and was always dedicated to his studies.
तस्य राजन्गुरुकुले वसतो नित्यमेव ह। समाप्तिं नागमद्विद्या नापि वेदा विशां पते ॥९-३९-४॥
tasya rājan gurukule vasato nityam eva ha। samāptiṁ nāgamad vidyā nāpi vedā viśāṁ pate ॥9-39-4॥

(His, O king, living in the guru's house always indeed certainly. Completion not attained knowledge not even the Vedas, O lord of men.)
O king, while he was living in the guru's house, he never attained completion of his studies, neither in knowledge nor in the Vedas, O lord of men.
स निर्विण्णस्ततो राजंस्तपस्तेपे महातपाः। ततो वै तपसा तेन प्राप्य वेदाननुत्तमान् ॥९-३९-५॥
sa nirviṇṇastato rāṁstapastepe mahātapāḥ। tato vai tapasā tena prāpya vedānuttamān ॥9-39-5॥

(He, disenchanted, then, O king, performed penance, being a great ascetic. Then indeed, by penance, he obtained the supreme Vedas.)

स विद्वान्वेदयुक्तश्च सिद्धश्चाप्यृषिसत्तमः। तत्र तीर्थे वरान्प्रादात्त्रीनेव सुमहातपाः ॥९-३९-६॥
sa vidvānvedayuktaśca siddhaścāpyṛṣisattamaḥ। tatra tīrthe varānprādāttrīneva sumahātapāḥ ॥9-39-6॥

(He, the wise one, versed in Vedas, accomplished and also the best of sages, granted three boons indeed at the holy place.)

अस्मिंस्तीर्थे महानद्या अद्यप्रभृति मानवः। आप्लुतो वाजिमेधस्य फलं प्राप्नोति पुष्कलम् ॥९-३९-७॥
asmiṁstīrthe mahānadyā adyaprabhr̥ti mānavaḥ। āpluto vājimedhasya phalaṁ prāpnoti puṣkalam ॥9-39-7॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - holy place; महानद्या (mahānadyā) - of the great river; अद्यप्रभृति (adyaprabhr̥ti) - from today onwards; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a human; आप्लुतः (āplutaḥ) - bathed; वाजिमेधस्य (vājimedhasya) - of the horse sacrifice; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; पुष्कलम् (puṣkalam) - abundant;]
(In this holy place of the great river, from today onwards, a human bathed obtains the abundant fruit of the horse sacrifice.)
In this sacred place by the great river, from today onwards, a person who bathes here will receive the full benefits of the horse sacrifice.
अद्यप्रभृति नैवात्र भयं व्यालाद्भविष्यति। अपि चाल्पेन यत्नेन फलं प्राप्स्यति पुष्कलम् ॥९-३९-८॥
adyaprabhr̥ti naivātra bhayaṃ vyālādbhaviṣyati। api cālpena yatnena phalaṃ prāpsyati puṣkalam ॥9-39-8॥
[अद्यप्रभृति (adyaprabhr̥ti) - from today onwards; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; व्यालात् (vyālāt) - from the serpent; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अल्पेन (alpena) - with little; यत्नेन (yatnena) - effort; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्स्यति (prāpsyati) - will obtain; पुष्कलम् (puṣkalam) - abundant;]
(From today onwards, indeed, there will be no fear here from the serpent. Also, with little effort, one will obtain abundant fruit.)

एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा जगाम त्रिदिवं मुनिः। एवं सिद्धः स भगवानार्ष्टिषेणः प्रतापवान् ॥९-३९-९॥
evamuktvā mahātejā jagāma tridivaṃ muniḥ। evaṃ siddhaḥ sa bhagavānārṣṭiṣeṇaḥ pratāpavān ॥9-39-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महातेजा (mahātejā) - greatly radiant; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवं (tridivaṃ) - to heaven; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - perfected; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine; आर्ष्टिषेणः (ārṣṭiṣeṇaḥ) - Arṣṭiṣeṇa; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - glorious;]
(Thus having spoken, the greatly radiant sage went to heaven. Thus perfected, the divine Arṣṭiṣeṇa was glorious.)
After speaking thus, the greatly radiant sage ascended to heaven. The divine Arṣṭiṣeṇa, having achieved perfection, was glorious.
तस्मिन्नेव तदा तीर्थे सिन्धुद्वीपः प्रतापवान्। देवापिश्च महाराज ब्राह्मण्यं प्रापतुर्महत् ॥९-३९-१०॥
tasminneva tadā tīrthe sindhudvīpaḥ pratāpavān। devāpiśca mahārāja brāhmaṇyaṃ prāpturmahat ॥9-39-10॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - at the holy place; सिन्धुद्वीपः (sindhudvīpaḥ) - Sindhudvipa; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the glorious; देवापि (devāpi) - Devapi; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ब्राह्मण्यम् (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; प्रापतु (prāptu) - attained; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(In that very holy place, then, the glorious Sindhudvipa and Devapi, O great king, attained great Brahminhood.)
At that very holy site, Sindhudvipa and Devapi, both illustrious figures, achieved the esteemed status of Brahminhood, O great king.
तथा च कौशिकस्तात तपोनित्यो जितेन्द्रियः। तपसा वै सुतप्तेन ब्राह्मणत्वमवाप्तवान् ॥९-३९-११॥
tathā ca kauśikastāta taponityo jitendriyaḥ। tapasā vai sutaptena brāhmaṇatvamavāptavān ॥9-39-11॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kausika; तात (tāta) - dear; तपोनित्यः (taponityaḥ) - always engaged in penance; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered his senses; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; वै (vai) - indeed; सुतप्तेन (sutaptena) - well-performed; ब्राह्मणत्वम् (brāhmaṇatvam) - the state of being a Brahmin; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - achieved;]
(Thus, dear Kausika, always engaged in penance and having conquered his senses, indeed achieved the state of being a Brahmin by well-performed penance.)

गाधिर्नाम महानासीत्क्षत्रियः प्रथितो भुवि। तस्य पुत्रोऽभवद्राजन्विश्वामित्रः प्रतापवान् ॥९-३९-१२॥
gādhirnāma mahānāsītkṣatriyaḥ prathito bhuvi। tasya putro'bhavadrājanviśvāmitraḥ pratāpavān ॥9-39-12॥

(Gadhi was a great Kshatriya, renowned on earth. His son was the mighty Vishwamitra, O king.)

स राजा कौशिकस्तात महायोग्यभवत्किल। स पुत्रमभिषिच्याथ विश्वामित्रं महातपाः ॥९-३९-१३॥
sa rājā kauśikastāta mahāyogyabhavatkila। sa putramabhiṣicyātha viśvāmitraṃ mahātapāḥ ॥9-39-13॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kausika; तात (tāta) - dear; महायोग्यः (mahāyogyaḥ) - very capable; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; किल (kila) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having anointed; अथ (atha) - then; विश्वामित्रम् (viśvāmitram) - Visvamitra; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
(He, King Kausika, indeed became very capable, dear. He, the great ascetic, then anointed his son Visvamitra.)

देहन्यासे मनश्चक्रे तमूचुः प्रणताः प्रजाः। न गन्तव्यं महाप्राज्ञ त्राहि चास्मान्महाभयात् ॥९-३९-१४॥
dehanyāse manaścakre tamūcuḥ praṇatāḥ prajāḥ। na gantavyaṃ mahāprājña trāhi cāsmānmahābhayāt ॥9-39-14॥
[देहन्यासे (dehanyāse) - in the act of laying down the body; मनःचक्रे (manaścakre) - in the mind's wheel; तम् (tam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; प्रणताः (praṇatāḥ) - bowed down; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; न (na) - not; गन्तव्यम् (gantavyam) - to be gone; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O great wise one; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; च (ca) - and; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; महाभयात् (mahābhayāt) - from great fear;]
(In the act of laying down the body, in the mind's wheel, the bowed down subjects said to him: "O great wise one, do not go, protect us from great fear.")
As the body was being laid down, the subjects, bowing down, said to him: "O great wise one, do not leave, save us from this great fear."
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच ततो गाधिः प्रजास्तदा। विश्वस्य जगतो गोप्ता भविष्यति सुतो मम ॥९-३९-१५॥
evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca tato gādhiḥ prajāstadā। viśvasya jagato goptā bhaviṣyati suto mama ॥9-39-15॥

(Thus spoken, then Gadhi replied, "Then my son will be the protector of the subjects of the universe and the world.")
Upon hearing this, Gadhi replied, "Then my son will become the protector of the universe and all its subjects."
इत्युक्त्वा तु ततो गाधिर्विश्वामित्रं निवेश्य च। जगाम त्रिदिवं राजन्विश्वामित्रोऽभवन्नृपः ॥ न च शक्नोति पृथिवीं यत्नवानपि रक्षितुम् ॥९-३९-१६॥
ityuktvā tu tato gādhirviśvāmitraṃ niveśya ca। jagāma tridivaṃ rājanviśvāmitro'bhavannṛpaḥ ॥ na ca śaknoti pṛthivīṃ yatnavānapi rakṣitum ॥9-39-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गाधिः (gādhiḥ) - Gadhi; विश्वामित्रम् (viśvāmitram) - Viswamitra; निवेश्य (niveśya) - having appointed; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viswamitra; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शक्नोति (śaknoti) - is able; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; यत्नवान् (yatnavān) - with effort; अपि (api) - even; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect;]
(Thus, having spoken, Gadhi then appointed Viswamitra and went to heaven, O king. Viswamitra became a king but is not able to protect the earth even with effort.)

ततः शुश्राव राजा स राक्षसेभ्यो महाभयम्। निर्ययौ नगराच्चापि चतुरङ्गबलान्वितः ॥९-३९-१७॥
tataḥ śuśrāva rājā sa rākṣasebhyo mahābhayam। niryayau nagarāccāpi caturaṅgabalānvitaḥ ॥9-39-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; राजा (rājā) - the king; स (sa) - he; राक्षसेभ्यः (rākṣasebhyaḥ) - from the demons; महाभयम् (mahābhayam) - great danger; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; चतुरङ्गबलान्वितः (caturaṅgabalānvitaḥ) - accompanied by a fourfold army;]
(Then the king heard of great danger from the demons. He departed from the city, also accompanied by a fourfold army.)

स गत्वा दूरमध्वानं वसिष्ठाश्रममभ्ययात्। तस्य ते सैनिका राजंश्चक्रुस्तत्रानयान्बहून् ॥९-३९-१८॥
sa gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ vasiṣṭhāśramamabhyayāt। tasya te sainikā rājaṃścakrustatrānayānbahūn ॥9-39-18॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; दूरम् (dūram) - far; अध्वानम् (adhvānam) - path; वसिष्ठाश्रमम् (vasiṣṭhāśramam) - Vasishtha's hermitage; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; तस्य (tasya) - his; ते (te) - those; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; राजन् (rājan) - O king; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; तत्र (tatra) - there; अनयान् (anayān) - confusions; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(He, having gone a long way, approached Vasishtha's hermitage. His soldiers, O king, created many confusions there.)
He traveled a long distance to reach the hermitage of Vasishtha. There, his soldiers caused many disturbances, O king.
ततस्तु भगवान्विप्रो वसिष्ठोऽऽश्रममभ्ययात्। ददृशे च ततः सर्वं भज्यमानं महावनम् ॥९-३९-१९॥
tatastu bhagavānvipro vasiṣṭho''śramamabhyayāt। dadṛśe ca tataḥ sarvaṃ bhajyamānaṃ mahāvanam ॥9-39-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - sage; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - saw; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; भज्यमानम् (bhajyamānam) - being destroyed; महावनम् (mahāvanam) - great forest;]
(Then the revered sage Vasiṣṭha approached the hermitage. And then he saw all the great forest being destroyed.)

तस्य क्रुद्धो महाराज वसिष्ठो मुनिसत्तमः। सृजस्व शबरान्घोरानिति स्वां गामुवाच ह ॥९-३९-२०॥
tasya kruddho mahārāja vasiṣṭho munisattamaḥ। sṛjasva śabarānghorāniti svāṃ gāmuvāca ha ॥9-39-20॥

तथोक्ता सासृजद्धेनुः पुरुषान्घोरदर्शनान्। ते च तद्बलमासाद्य बभञ्जुः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥९-३९-२१॥
tathoktā sāsṛjaddhenuḥ puruṣānghoradarśanān। te ca tadbalamāsādya babhañjuḥ sarvatodiśam ॥9-39-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; सा (sā) - she; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; धेनुः (dhenuḥ) - cow; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; घोरदर्शनान् (ghoradarśanān) - terrifying in appearance; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; बलम् (balam) - strength; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; बभञ्जुः (babhañjuḥ) - broke; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - in all directions; दिशम् (diśam) - directions;]
(Thus spoken, the cow created men terrifying in appearance. And they, having obtained that strength, broke in all directions.)
